1. The abscesses in the viscera, especially the spleen, and in the peripheral lymphatic glands, some of which contain living plague bacilli, which have been previously described as “chronic plague in rats” are shown to be plague lesions in the process of healing. The name “resolving plague” is more appropriate.

2. These lesions are found most frequently towards the close of, and immediately after, the acute plague epidemic.

3. They have been found frequently in rats in Belgaum and Poona, and a re-examination of Bombay rats shows that they also occur there. We had previously only found them in the Punjab villages.

This paper records the results of systematic pneumococcus typing over a 7-year period in children from 4 days to 12 years of age in the R.H.S.C., Glasgow. Strains typed include those from respiratory tract lesions, from pus in middle ears, meninges, joints, serous sacs and miscellaneous purulent foci. A series of strains from normal throats serves for comparison.

The constant prevalence year by year of types 6, 19, 1 and 23 in all types of disease is striking. On dividing the cases into those under and over 2 years, the incidence of type 1 in the older children is four times that in the younger group. Conversely in those over 2 the incidence of the higher types (21–32) is only half that in the younger patients. No other significant difference in type distribution is observed on comparing the two age groups. Group IV pneumococci are commonly carried in the healthy nasopharynx, and are potential pathogens in young children in whom broncho pneumonia is generally an endogenous infection. There is evidence that the same type of pneumococcus frequently invades the entire respiratory tract and the middle ears. Only thirty of our cases were in the neonatal period and the apparent immunity of the newborn to the pneumococcus is discussed.

Two hundred and sixty-four samples of sera obtained from normal healthy persons belonging to different age groups were examined for haemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies against reovirus types 1–3 to assess the prevalence of reovirus infection in the northern part of India.

Reovirus infection appeared as early as 6 months to 1 year of age. With reovirus types 1 and 2, the maximum incidence of 67 and 48% respectively occurred by the age of 10–20 years, whereas with type 3 infection the maximum incidence (73%) was reached by the age of 25 years. The incidence of reovirus type 2 infection in all the age groups was remarkably low in this series. A drop in the incidence of reovirus type 2 infection was also noticed after the age of 20 years.

The difference in geometric mean titre of antibody in different ages against reovirus type 2 was highly significant, suggesting probably that most of the infection occurred by the age of twenty years. The difference in the geometric mean value of the titres of antibody against types 1 and 3 was not significant in different age groups. The levels of antibody against types 1 and 3 in all the age groups were almost the same, suggesting that infection, specially with reovirus type 3, was occurring in all the age groups even beyond 20 years of age.

An outbreak of streptococcal throat infection which took place in a preparatory school for boys (some of whom were choristers) over three terms from November 1983 to June 1984 is described. Typing of the organism revealed that four successive outbreaks, each due to a different type, had occurred. Thirty-nine per cent of the boys were affected, the incidence of infection being higher among boarders than day boys. Infection seemed to spread via the forms, dormitories and choir. Recurrent attacks occurred in 32% of infected boys. The complication rate was 8%. Treatment with penicillin was always effective but did not prevent reinfection. Suggestions for the management of an outbreak of sore throat in a school are given.

In view of the importance of a pure milk supply, we considered that it might be of interest to examine chemically, microscopically, and bacteriologically, a number of specimens of milk coming into the Metropolis for which purpose we decided to select samples from the various counties, the milk of which is consigned to London. We found that milk so consigned comes from about twenty-six counties extending from Derby in the North, to Hampshire and Devonshire in the South and South-West, and from Hereford in the West, to Norfolk in the East.

1. That there is reason to believe that sporadic cases of cerebro-spinal fever occurred in Hong Kong previous to the outbreak of the epidemic in 1918.

2. That the epidemic followed a widespread infection of influenza colds.

3. That the mortality out of a total of 1040 cases was 85–48 per cent.

4. That the most susceptible age was found to be the age period under five years.

The younger the individual, the greater the susceptibility, with the added proviso that the extremes of life suffered most.

5. That once the epidemic was established, a drop in the temperature, steadily maintained, accompanied by an increase in the saturation of the air as regards moisture, associated with a lack of sunshine, was found to be followed after a lag of a few days, by a rise in the number of cases. This lag showed a tendency to increase as the epidemic progressed, from three to four days at the beginning to six to seven days at the end of the epidemic.

6. That the number of cases in any given area varied directly with the overcrowding in that area, and this bears out the contention that overcrowding is one of the most important features in the epidemiology of cerebro-spinal fever.

7. That the housing conditions in Hong Kong are such as to necessitate immediate action on the part of the Government, to safeguard the public health of the colony.

8. That new entries to Hong Kong formed a large proportion of the cases, and that this appears to be an important factor in the epidemiology of the disease.

9. That the poorest, most hard worked and badly housed portion of the community suffered most in the epidemic.

10. That the recognition and isolation of carriers is impracticable in an epidemic of any considerable dimensions.

11. That in the present condition of the knowledge of the means by which infection is spread, the wearing of a screen composed of some impervious material such as celluloid would seem to afford complete protection to the wearer against droplet infection.

12. That known carriers should be compelled to wear this screen until such time as they are proved free from the meningococcus. Thus protected, the carrier could pursue his usual avocation and the community be safeguarded from infection at a minimum of expense.

1. The appearance and disappearance of typhoid bacilli in the faeces in these four cases bore no relation to changes in the diet nor to the physical state of the stools, but the later they appeared the shorter was the duration of their appearance.

On the disappearance of typhoid bacilli from the stools the intestinal flora tended to become more simple.

2. B. coli was the only organism invariably present at every examination.

3. Streptococci were very much more abundant in the earlier stages of the disease, when milk formed the greater part of the diet, than in the later stages.

4. In two cases where boils occurred on the body the causative organism had previously been isolated in large numbers from the faeces.

5. With stools slightly alkaline to litmus the flora in these cases was relatively simple and fermentative in type. There is no apparent advantage, therefore, in giving a high carbohydrate diet except in cases of marked alkalinity and putrefaction.

Good fixation of complement was obtained with the infective virus fraction of the Mahoney Type 1 poliomyelitis virus which had been adapted to suckling mice. The presence of a soluble antigen, specific to Type 1 virus, was also demonstrated but was small in amount.

The infective virus fraction of the suckling mouse adapted MEF1 Type 2 poliomyelitis virus produced as good fixation of complement as did Type 1, but the fixation of complement by the MEF1 soluble antigen was far greater than that obtained with the Mahoney strain.

A simple modification of Wilson & Blair's medium for the isolation of typhoid and paratyphoid bacilli has been evolved.

1. Instead of the original six ingredients, this modification contains only three, namely, brilliant green, bismuth-ammonium-citrate and sodium sulphite, and may therefore be conveniently termed “B.B.S. medium”.

2. The glucose, sodium phosphate and ferrous sulphate of the original medium are eliminated. The bismuth-ammonium-citrate solution is made without caustic soda.

3. The B.B.S. medium keeps well for several weeks. Deterioration can easily be detected and readily rectified.

4. The inhibitory action towards B. aerogenes is greatly improved in the B.B.S. medium. This is particularly advantageous in countries where this organism is frequently encountered.

5. B. typhosus and B. paratyphosus grow readily. The colonies are sufficiently characteristic and can be picked out early for confirmatory tests.

6. Using B.B.S. medium a complete diagnosis should be possible within 48 hr.

Our study population consisted of all children and adolescents, with laboratory-confirmed SARS-Co-V-2 infection, hospitalised from February 2020 through February 2022, among residents of the Tel Aviv (TA) District, Israel. There were 491 children and adolescents hospitalised with Sars-CoV-2 infection. Among them, 281 (57%) admitted with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as the primary cause of admission (rate of 39 per 100 000). Among all children and adolescents in the TA District, the highest hospitalisation rates were observed among infants and children below the age of 4 years (rate of 311 per 100 000 population). Severe disease was observed mostly among children with multiple underlying medical conditions. Admission rates were also elevated among residents of the ultra-orthodox community (rate ratio (RR) compared to the rest of the district; 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.38–3.82). Admission rates with COVID-19 as primary cause of admission were higher during Omicron compared to Delta predominance period (RR 1.7; 95% CI 1.22–2.32). Targeted social and public health policies should be put in place when rates of disease start to increase, such as encouraging vaccine uptake for eligible children and social distancing when necessary, taking into account already existing social and learning gaps, in order to reduce the burden of disease.

The following contribution to the aetiology of cerebrospinal meningitis is published with a view to calling attention to the possible part played by dust in the causation of this disease. The strong connection between dusty occupations and cases of cerebrospinal fever, as here detailed afford, it is believed, a prima facie presumption that dust may be one of the vehicles of the specific germ.

The British Standard Technique for Determining the Rideal-Walker Coefficient of Disinfectants (no. 541—1934), in laying down the procedure to be adopted with regard to the test typhoid bacillus culture, recommends that a fresh culture be obtained each month from the National Collection of Type Cultures. In all probability this is the best procedure; it does, however, sometimes happen that a test is required urgently when a fresh culture is not available. The following notes upon our own experience in maintaining cultures may therefore be of some interest. It is our practice to obtain fresh cultures whenever we are called upon to carry out other than routine tests unless a recent one has been obtained, and many of these cultures have now been running for a number of years. On the arrival of the culture from the N.C.T.C. it is subcultured on to an agar slope and “incubated” at room temperature in a dark cupboard. 2% agar is used in a broth prepared by the tryptic digestion of ox heart. Further subcultures are made at intervals of one month. It is our usual practice to start a series of broth cultures from such slopes not less than 14 days after sowing.

The most important of the proteid constituents of milk is casein. From 70 to 90% of the total proteids of milk consists of this substance1. In milk, casein exists as a soluble calcium compound, which is not precipitated by boiling, but from which casein is deposited by the addition of acid or by the action of rennet2. This phenomenon is known as the curdling of milk and is a preliminary to its gastric digestion, both the acid in the stomach and the rennet being capable of producing it. By artificially influencing the nature of its curd we can influence the digestibility of the milk. In human gastric digestion and in the experiments detailed below both acid and rennet are present. The curdling of milk is a necessary preliminary to its digestion in an acid medium, and by influencing this process we can also influence the digestibility of the milk.

The epidemic of tuberculosis has posed a serious burden in Qinghai province, it is necessary to clarify the epidemiological characteristics and spatial-temporal distribution of TB for future prevention and control measures. We used descriptive epidemiological methods and spatial statistical analysis including spatial correlation and spatial-temporal analysis in this study. Furthermore, we applied an exponential smoothing model for TB epidemiological trend forecasting. Of 43 859 TB cases, the sex ratio was 1.27:1 (M:F), and the average annual TB registered incidence was 70.00/100 000 of 2009–2019. More cases were reported in March and April, and the worst TB stricken regions were the prefectures of Golog and Yushu. High TB registered incidences were seen in males, farmers and herdsmen, Tibetans, or elderly people. 7132 cases were intractable, which were recurrent, drug resistant, or co-infected with other infections. Three likely cases clusters with significant high risk were found by spatial-temporal scan on data of 2009–2019. The exponential smoothing winters' additive model was selected as the best-fitting model to forecast monthly TB cases in the future. This research indicated that TB in Qinghai is still a serious threaten to the local residents' health. Multi-departmental collaboration and funds special for TB treatments and control are still needed, and the exponential smoothing model is promising which could be applied for forecasting of TB epidemic trend in this high-altitude province.

Phylogenetic analysis was performed on the haemagglutinin and neuraminidase subtype N2 genes of low-pathogenic avian influenza viruses (LPAIVs) detected in Ireland between 2003 and 2007. Nucleotide sequences were compared to previously published sequences from the National Centre for Biotechnology Information. Sequences from viruses of the same subtype isolated in different years were compared to examine the possibility that LPAIVs may have been maintained in Ireland from year to year. All viruses had closest identity with published sequences of European lineage, supporting the conclusion that LPAIVs had been introduced to Ireland by dabbling ducks that had migrated from Europe. The data suggested that different subtypes of virus had been introduced each year. However, there was evidence that some LPAIVs may have been maintained in the sedentary waterfowl population for consecutive seasons. Furthermore, almost identical H6 and H10 sequences with different N types were found in isolates from the same season, suggesting that reassortment had occurred.

Studies on the phenol coefficient after the cover-slip method were made on some disinfectants with the addition of different amounts of various organic materials. The results show that the phenol coefficient varies with the nature and amount of the different organic substances added to the disinfectant in question.

This report summarizes closed, family, and open studies conducted sequentially over a 10 month period with the Cendehill rubella virus vaccine in more than 16,000 children and adolescents. This strain of rubella was attenuated by serial propagation on primary rabbit kidney cell cultures. Inoculation of the Cendehill vaccine produced seroconversion in 97% of the 3589 susceptible (seronegative) vaccinated persons. There was no spread of the virus to susceptible controls living in close contact with those vaccinated. The vaccine was well tolerated. No arthritis or arthralgia occurred in 860 female subjects 13–18 years of age who were included in the study. The Cendehill vaccine would appear to meet the requirements of an acceptable vaccine.

With regard to the influence of malarial infection on the Wassermann test some controversy prevails:

Wassermann and Lange (1913) refer to Meyer and Bonfiglio who, working in Italy, obtained a positive reaction in 80 per cent. of the cases where the blood contained parasites; in some of their cases positive reactions were obtainable for several months after the disappearance of fever and parasites. For this reason Wassermann and Lange advise to put every case, coming from a malaria-infected country and showing a positive reaction, under quinine treatment and to repeat the test after a lapse of six weeks.
