For certain ordinary differential operators L of order 2n, this paper considers the problem of determining the number of linearly independent solutions of class L2[a, ∞) of the equation L(y) = λy. Of central importance is the operator

where the coefficients pi are real. For this L, classical results give that the number m of linearly independent L2[a, ∞) solutions of L(y) = λy is the same for all non-real λ, and is at least n [10, Chapter V]. When m = n, the operator L is said to be in the limit-point condition at infinity. We consider here conditions on the coefficients pi of L which imply m = n. These conditions are in the form of limitations on the growth of the coefficients.

Our main purpose is to enlarge upon the studies of McAdam [9; 10] on the property of going down (GD) for prime ideals in extensions of (commutative integral) domains. Unlike the investigations of McAdam and the earlier work of Krull [8] and Cohen-Seidenberg [4] on GD and the related property of going up (GU), this paper is not primarily concerned with integral extensions. Consideration of more general extensions of domains A ⊂ B is facilitated by the following basic definitions. A prime ideal P of A is unibranched in B if there exists exactly one prime ideal Q of B satisfying Q ∩ A = P.

The aim of this paper is to present a very explicit construction of one parameter families of hyperelliptic curves C of genus (p−1 )/ 2, for any odd prime number p, with the property that the endomorphism algebra of the jacobian of C contains the real subfield Q(2 cos(2π/p)) of the cyclotomic field Q(e2π i/p).

Two proofs of the fact that the constructed curves have this property will be given. One is by providing a double cover with the pth roots of unity in its automorphism group. The other is by explicitly writing down equations of a correspondence in C x C which defines multiplication by 2cos(2π/ p) on the jacobian of C. As a byproduct we obtain polynomials which define bijective maps Fℓ → Fℓ for all prime numbers in certain congruence classes.

Let G be a finite group. (All groups considered here are finite). There exist several results which control the structure of G in terms of cd(G), the set of degrees of the irreducible complex characters of G. Here, we are concerned with the situation where only the cardinality of cd(G) is given. If |cd(G)| ≦ 3,, then it is known [9 ; 7] that G is solvable and the derived length dl (G) ≦ cd (G) |., If |cd(G)| = 4, then G need not be solvable (e.g., G = PSL(2, 2n))\ however [5], if G is solvable then dl(G) ≦4.

We study the Hilbert functions of fat points in ${{\mathbb{P}}^{1\,}}\times \,{{\mathbb{P}}^{1}}$. If $Z\,\subseteq \,{{\mathbb{P}}^{1\,}}\times \,{{\mathbb{P}}^{1}}$ is an arbitrary fat point scheme, then it can be shown that for every $i$ and $j$ the values of the Hilbert function ${{H}_{Z}}(l,\,j)$ and ${{H}_{Z}}(i,\,l)$ eventually become constant for $l\,\gg \,0$. We show how to determine these eventual values by using only the multiplicities of the points, and the relative positions of the points in ${{\mathbb{P}}^{1\,}}\times \,{{\mathbb{P}}^{1}}$. This enables us to compute all but a finite number values of ${{H}_{Z}}$ without using the coordinates of points. We also characterize the $\text{ACM}$ fat point schemes using our description of the eventual behaviour. In fact, in the case that $Z\,\subseteq \,{{\mathbb{P}}^{1\,}}\times \,{{\mathbb{P}}^{1}}$ is $\text{ACM}$, then the entire Hilbert function and its minimal free resolution depend solely on knowing the eventual values of the Hilbert function.

In recent years, there has been a rapid growth of the K-theory of C*-algebras. From a certain point of view, C*-algebras can be treated as “non-commutative topological spaces”, while finitely generated projective modules over them can be thought of as “non-commutative vector bundles”. The K-theory of C*-algebras [30] then generalizes the classical K-theory of topological spaces [1]. In particular, the K0-group of a unital C*-algebra A is the group “generated” by (or more precisely, the Grothendieck group of) the commutative semigroup of stable isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective modules over A with direct summation as the binary operation. The semigroup gives an order structure on K0(A) and is usually called the positive cone in K0(A).

Around 1980, the work of Pimsner and Voiculescu [18] and of A. Connes [4] provided effective ways to compute the K-groups of C*-algebras. Then the classification of finitely generated projective modules over certain unital C*-algebras up to stable isomorphism could be done by computing their K0-groups as ordered groups. Later on, inspired by A. Connes's development of non-commutative differential geometry on finitely generated projective modules [2], the deeper question of classifying such modules up to isomorphism and hence the so-called cancellation question were raised (cf. [21] ).

We study the geometry of the set of closed extensions of index 0 of an elliptic differential cone operator and its model operator in connection with the spectra of the extensions, and we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of rays of minimal growth for such operators.

We study local properties of the Bakry–Émery curvature function ${\mathcal{K}}_{G,x}:(0,\infty ]\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ at a vertex $x$ of a graph $G$ systematically. Here ${\mathcal{K}}_{G,x}({\mathcal{N}})$ is defined as the optimal curvature lower bound ${\mathcal{K}}$ in the Bakry–Émery curvature-dimension inequality $CD({\mathcal{K}},{\mathcal{N}})$ that $x$ satisfies. We provide upper and lower bounds for the curvature functions, introduce fundamental concepts like curvature sharpness and $S^{1}$-out regularity, and relate the curvature functions of $G$ with various spectral properties of (weighted) graphs constructed from local structures of $G$. We prove that the curvature functions of the Cartesian product of two graphs $G_{1},G_{2}$ are equal to an abstract product of curvature functions of $G_{1},G_{2}$. We explore the curvature functions of Cayley graphs and many particular (families of) examples. We present various conjectures and construct an infinite increasing family of 6-regular graphs which satisfy $CD(0,\infty )$ but are not Cayley graphs.

If A is an H*-algebra, then the orthogonal complement of a closed right (left) ideal I is a closed right (left) ideal P. Saworotnow (7) considered Banach algebras which are Hilbert spaces and in which the closed right ideals satisfy the complementation property of an H*-algebra. In our right complemented Banach algebras we drop the requirement of the existence of an inner product and only assume that for every closed right ideal I there is a closed right ideal IP which behaves like the orthogonal complement in a Hilbert space (Definition 1). Thus our algebras may be considered as a generalization of Saworotnow's right complemented algebras.

Suppose is a C*-algebra and H is a Hilbert space. Let denote the set of completely positive maps from into the set B(H) of (bounded linear) operators on H. This paper studies the vector space spanned by , i.e., the linear maps that are finite linear combinations of completely positive maps. From another viewpoint, a map ϕ is in precisely when it has a decomposition ϕ = (ϕ1 – ϕ2) + i(ϕ3 – ϕ4) with ϕ1, ϕ2, ϕ3, ϕ4 in CP ; this decomposition is analogous to the Hahn decomposition for measures [8, 111.4.10] (see also Theorem 20). The analogous class of maps with “completely positive” replaced by “positive” was studied by R. I. Loebl [11] and S.-K. Tsui [17], and when is commutative, this latter class coincides withi , since every positive linear map on a commutative C*-algebra is completely positive [16].

It has been known for some time but does not seem to be anywhere in the literature that the variety of all ortholattices is generated by its finite members (see (4.2) of this paper). This is well known to imply that the word problem for free ortholattices is solvable. On the other hand, it is also known that the solution obtained this way is of no practical use. The main purpose of this paper is to present a workable solution.

The purpose of this paper is to give some conditions for complex submanifolds in a Kaehler manifold of constant holomorphic sectional curvature to be Einstein.

For a complex hypersurface which is Einstein, Smyth [8] has obtained its classification and Chern [2] has proved the corresponding local result. Moreover, Takahashi [9] and Nomizu-Smyth [3] generalized this to a complex hypersurface with parallel Ricci tensor. We shall consider a condition weaker than the requirement that the Ricci tensor be parallel, that is we shall consider a complex submanifold with commuting curvature and Ricci operator, which condition was treated by Bishop-Goldberg [1].

It is well-known that the classical vanishing results of the cohomology theory of Lie algebras depend on the characteristic of the underlying base field. The theorems of Cartan and Zassenhaus, for instance, entail that non-modular simple Lie algebras do not admit non-trivial central extensions. In contrast, early results by Block [3] prove that this conclusion loses its validity if the underlying base field has positive characteristic.

Central extensions of a given Lie algebra L, or equivalently its second cohomology group H(L, F), can be conveniently described by means of derivations φ:L → L*.

This paper is concerned with the question of oscillation of the solutions of second order superlinear ordinary differential equations with alternating coefficients.

I consider a two-parameter family ${{B}_{s,t}}$ of unitary transforms mapping an ${{L}^{2}}$-space over a Lie group of compact type onto a holomorphic ${{L}^{2}}$-space over the complexified group. These were studied using infinite-dimensional analysis in joint work with $\text{B}$. Driver, but are treated here by finite-dimensional means. These transforms interpolate between two previously known transforms, and all should be thought of as generalizations of the classical Segal-Bargmann transform. I consider also the limiting cases $s\,\to \,\infty \,\text{and}\,s\,\to \,t/2$.

We provide the reader with a uniform approach for obtaining various useful explicit upper bounds on residues of Dedekind zeta functions of numbers fields and on absolute values of values at $s=1$ of $L$-series associated with primitive characters on ray class groups of number fields. To make it quite clear to the reader how useful such bounds are when dealing with class number problems for CM-fields, we deduce an upper bound for the root discriminants of the normal CM-fields with (relative) class number one.

On établit quelques résultats généraux relatifs à la taille du groupe d’automorphismes de l’espace de Douady de points sur une surface, puis on étudie quelques propriétés des automorphismes provenant d’un automorphisme de la surface, en particulier leur action sur la cohomologie et la classification de leurs points fixes.

Introduction. La théorie des automates finis fait partie de ce que l'on appelle aujourd'hui les mathématiques de l'informatique. Comme pour les autres spécialités de ce domaine, elle est née des travaux de logiciens et, pour les automates finis, c'est à Kleene que l'on doit le premier théorème. Cette théorie s'est considérablement développée depuis la période des fondations. La direction principale est l'étude des automates reconnaissant des suites finies ou mots. Elle présente des aspects mathématiques qui la rapprochent de domaines classiques comme par exemple la théorie combinatoire des groupes. Parallèlement, plusieurs auteurs ont étudié le comportement des automates finis sur des objets plus généraux que les mots. C'est le cas notamment pour la théorie des automates reconnaissant des arbres. C'est aussi le cas pour les automates reconnaissant des mots infinis qui sont le sujet de cet article.

In the classification of almost alternative algebras relative quasiequivalence by Albert two new classes of algebras of type (γ, δ) were introduced, namely those of type (1, 1) and ( —1, 0) (1, equations (34), (35), and Theorem 6). Since rings of type (1, 1) and ( — 1, 0) are anti-isomorphic it suffices to consider those of type (1, 1). They may be defined as rings satisfying

We investigate exceptional sets in the Waring–Goldbach problem. For example, in the cubic case, we show that all but $O\left( {{N}^{79/84+\in }} \right)$ integers subject to the necessary local conditions can be represented as the sum of five cubes of primes. Furthermore, we develop a new device that leads easily to similar estimates for exceptional sets for sums of fourth and higher powers of primes.
