In this paper we represent certain linear operators in a space with indefinite metric. Such a space may be a pair (H, B), where H is a separable Hilbert space, B is a bilinear functional on H given by B(x, y) = [Jx, y], [, ] is the Hilbert inner product in H, and J is a bounded linear operator such that J = J* and J2 = I. If T is a linear operator in H, then ‖T‖ is the usual operator norm. The operator J above has two eigenspaces corresponding to the eigenvalues + 1 and –1.

In case the eigenspace in which J induces a positive operator has finite dimension k, a general spectral theory is known and has been developed principally by Pontrjagin [25], Iohvidov and Kreĭn [13], Naĭmark [20], and others.

A remarkable theorem of Herstein [1, Theorem 2] of which we have made several uses states: If R is a semiprime ring of characteristic different from 2 and if U is both a Lie ideal and a subring of R then either U ⊂ Z (the centre of R) or U contains a nonzero ideal of R. In a recent paper [3] Herstein extends the above mentioned result significantly and has proved that if R is a semiprime ring of characteristic different from 2 and V is an additive subgroup of R such that [V, U] ⊂ V, where U is a Lie ideal of R, then either [V, U] = 0 or V ⊃ [M, R] ≠ 0 where M is an ideal of R. In this paper our object is to prove the following.

Let (X, T, π) denote a flow, where X is a compact topological space metrizable by d, and T is a closed non-trivial subgroup of the reals under addition. T is recurrent if and only if for each and s > 0, there exists t > s such that x ∈ X implies . If T is almost-periodic, then T is both recurrent and distal. In §§ 4 and 5, it is shown that, under more stringent hypotheses, the recurrence of T is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for T to be distal. Let S be a closed non-trivial subgroup of T. It is shown in § 3 that T is recurrent if and only if S is recurrent. From this result, we obtain a solution to a problem posed by Nemyckiĭ (16, p. 492, Problem 6).

We construct a scheme $B(r; {\mathbb {A}}^n)$ such that a map $X \to B(r; {\mathbb {A}}^n)$ corresponds to a degree-n étale algebra on X equipped with r generating global sections. We then show that when $n=2$ , i.e., in the quadratic étale case, the singular cohomology of $B(r; {\mathbb {A}}^n)({\mathbb {R}})$ can be used to reconstruct a famous example of S. Chase and to extend its application to showing that there is a smooth affine $r-1$ -dimensional ${\mathbb {R}}$ -variety on which there are étale algebras ${\mathcal {A}}_n$ of arbitrary degrees n that cannot be generated by fewer than r elements. This shows that in the étale algebra case, a bound established by U. First and Z. Reichstein in [6] is sharp.

This paper deals with the perturbed operator L∈ = L0 + ∈q where ∈ is a real parameter and q(x) is a bounded positive (η, η) matrix operator with piecewise continuous elements 0 ≤ x < ∞. Sufficient conditions involving L0, q are given such that L∈ determines a selfadjoint operator H∈ and such that the spectral measure E∈(Δ′) corresponding to H∈ is an analytic function of ∈, where Δ′ is a subset of a fixed bounded interval Δ = [α, β]. The results include and improve results obtained for scalar differential operators in an earlier paper (3).

1. Introduction. In 1931, Newman [9] showed that a connected manifold cannot accept arbitrarily small period-n homeomorphisms, for any n > 1. In this paper we are concerned with the existence of chainable continua with arbitrarily small homeomorphisms.

For a long time the only known periodic homeomorphisms of chainable continua had periods 1, 2 or 4 [4]. Recently, Wayne Lewis [8] showed that the pseudo-arc admits periodic homeomorphisms of every order, as well as p-adic cantor group actions. We will see that such homeomorphisms can be made arbitrarily small.

In Section 4, a different chainable indecomposable continuum accepting arbitrarily small period-2 homeomorphisms is constructed.

This paper is a continuation of [1; 2]. In [2], I stated that I had been unable to construct examples of planes satisfying various conditions. Some of the examples that I have since constructed are given below. A discussion of one-dimensional absolute geometries, with examples, will be given in a separate paper. The relevant parts of [1] and [2] are [1, § 1, § 2 up to 2.4; 2, § 2]. We shall use the notation and terminology of [1; 2]; the axioms Cl*-C4* and C4** (referred to below) can all be found in [1].

We shall show here that spaces of dimension greater than 1 exist, both Archimedean and non-Archimedean, satisfying Cl*-C4*, in which not all points are isometric, and that C4** does not follow from Cl*-C4* in non- Archimedean geometries of dimension greater than 1.

First, we build a computational procedure to reconstruct the convex body from a pre-given surface area measure. Nontrivially, we prove the convergence of this procedure. Then, the sufficient and necessary conditions of a Sobolev binary function to be a lightness function of a convex body are investigated. Finally, we present a computational procedure to compute the curvature function from a pre-given lightness function, and then we reconstruct the convex body from this curvature function by using the first procedure. The convergence is also proved. The main computations in both procedures are simply about the spherical harmonics.

In [10], Witt laid the foundation for the study of quadratic forms over fields. Suppose Q is a quadratic form defined on a finite dimensional vector space V over a field of characteristic not equal to 2. Witt showed that non-zero vectors x and y in V satisfying Q(x) = Q(y) can be mapped into each other via an isometry of the vector space V. More generally, if τ : W ⟶ W’ is an isometry between subspaces of V, then τ extends to an isometry ϕ of V.

In this article we study the geometry of the eigenvarieties of unitary groups at points corresponding to tempered non-stable representations with an anti-ordinary (a.k.a evil) refinement. We prove that, except in the case where the Galois representation attached to the automorphic form is a sum of characters, the eigenvariety is non-smooth at such a point, and that (under some additional hypotheses) its tangent space is big enough to account for all the relevant Selmer group. We also study the local reducibility locus at those points, proving that in general, in contrast with the case of the eigencurve, it is a proper subscheme of the fiber of the eigenvariety over the weight space.

1. In this paper, X will always denote a locally compact Hausdorff space, C0(X) the algebra of all complex-valued continuous functions vanishing at infinity on X and B(X) the algebra of all bounded continuous complex-valued functions defined on X. If X is compact, C0(X) is identical to B (X) and all the results of this paper are obvious. Therefore, we will assume at the outset that X is not compact. If A represents an algebra of functions, AR will denote the algebra of all real-valued functions in A.

A theorem of Eisenbud, Griffith, and Robson states that if R is hereditary and noetherian (on both the left and right) then every proper homomorphic image of R is a generalized unserial ring (see, for example, [3, p. 244]). Singh [11, p. 883] states a converse: If R is a right bounded, noetherian prime ring, all of whose proper homomorphic images are generalized uniserial rings, then (every divisible right R-module is injective, so) R is right hereditary. (Actually, Singh omitted the clearly necessary “bounded” condition.) Singh's theorem generalizes results of [9, Proposition 15], [2, Theorem 2.1], and [8], about commutative rings.

We will call a semi-prime ring R essentially right bounded if each essential right ideal contains a two-sided ideal which is essential as a right ideal. In case R is prime, “essentially right bounded” coincides with “right bounded”.

We shall say that a plane set D has the Kakeya property if a unit segment can be turned continuously in D through 360° back to its original position. The famous solution of this problem by A. S. Besicovitch (1; 2; 4; 5; 6), to the effect that there are sets of arbitrarily small area having the Kayeka property, leaves open the problem obtained by adding the new condition that the set D be also simply connected. Since we do not know whether there is an attainable minimum, we define the Kakeya constant K to be the greatest lower bound of areas of simply connected sets having the Kakeya property. We shall refer to such sets as Kakeya sets.

Hyperbolic differential operators with constant coefficients introduced and studied systematically by Gårding (4), were characterized by the existence of the fundamental solution with some cone condition, according to Hörmander (6). Recently Ehrenpreis, extending the notion of hyperbolicity due to Gårding, has defined hyperbolic operators for distributions with compact support in the convolution sense. Under the hypothesis that the operator is invertible as a distribution, he has established a theorem analogous to the theorem of Hörmander mentioned above (3).

The Bernoulli polynomials of order k, where k is a positive integer, are defined by

Bm(k)(x) is a polynomial of degree m with rational coefficients, and the constant term of Bm(k)(x) is the mth Bernoulli number of order k, Bm(k). In a previous paper (3) we obtained some conditions, in terms of k and m, which imply that Bm(k)(x) is irreducible (all references to irreducibility will be with respect to the field of rational numbers). In particular, we obtained the following two results.

We consider ideals in a polynomial ring that are generated by regular sequences of homogeneous polynomials and are stable under the action of the symmetric group permuting the variables. In previous work, we determined the possible isomorphism types for these ideals. Following up on that work, we now analyze the possible degrees of the elements in such regular sequences. For each case of our classification, we provide some criteria guaranteeing the existence of regular sequences in certain degrees.

We have previously shown how to construct a deformation quantization of any locally compact space on which a vector group acts. Within this framework we show here that, for a natural class of Hamiltonians, the quantum evolutions will have the classical evolution as their classical limit.

The object of this paper is to prove a version of the Beurling–Helson–Lowdenslager invariant subspace theorem for operators on certain Banach spaces of functions on a multiply connected domain in $\mathbb{C}$. The norms for these spaces are either the usual Lebesgue and Hardy space norms or certain continuous gauge norms. In the Hardy space case the expected corollaries include the characterization of the cyclic vectors as the outer functions in this context, a demonstration that the set of analytic multiplication operators is maximal abelian and reflexive, and a determination of the closed operators that commute with all analytic multiplication operators.
