This moth, which is very common in and about Montreal, is described by Walker, in a paper by W. S. d'Urban, published in Vol. 5 of the canadian Naturalist (1860), entitled “A systematic List of Lepidoptera collected in the vicinity of Montreal.” It is also taken at Quebec, but I met with only two specimens there during several years' collecting.

We analyzed nitrogen (N) content in phloem and xylem of 75 northern red oak, Quercus rubra L. (Fagaceae), removed in 2002–2007 from three sites within the Ozark National Forest, Arkansas, to investigate the relationship between vascular tissue N status and wood borer infestation. Populations of native red oak borer, Enaphalodes rufulus (Haldeman) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), experienced an outbreak and population crash during the sampling period. Vascular tissue N was not correlated with borer infestation density (exit holes/m−2/bark surface), which suggests variation in N status of vascular tissue was not influenced by or did not influence borer success. Vascular tissue N was greater in trees sampled during winter months than in trees sampled in spring and summer months.

Walsingham described the species from 1 male, 2 females, from Shasta Co., Calif. Heinrich, in his revision, confines the distribution to the eastern section of the continent and in his key to the species (p. 132) characterizes it as having “basal patch heavily shaded with black, the blackish scaling extending diagonally to middle of costa.” Neither the original description nor the figure bears out this characterization; the figure, while somewhat crude, notable in the too great prominence given the outer patches as compared with the basal one, certainly shows no connecting band between the basal patch and the midcostal one; further the description distinctly calls for a dark spot at end of cell, in fact the name is based on this feature.

The typical genus of the family—a general favorite with collectors and the source of a good deal of worry and uncertainty to describers. I have seen very large series of specimens of many species, and have seen nearly all the species. From a rather careful study of the species I can see no reason why they should not be as easily recognizable or limited as those of any other Lepidopterous genus—indeed, the problem strikes, me as a remarkably easy one, the key to which lies in the fact that no amount of obsolescence of maculation authorizes a species, while change of pattern can be easily detected even in speciments with the markings much broken.

I fear that any one reading the various papers which have appeared during the past year on the Cunea–Congrua–Antigone–Textor controversy would not be very greatly impressed with the lucidity of entomologists. This controversy illustrates remarkably well the difficulty of carrying on a discussion about species or forms whose status is disputed without rendering confusion worse confounded, for the simple reason that different persons use the same name in different senses. For instance, when Dr. Fyles writes of cunea, Drury, he does not mean the insect which Drs. Smith and Dyar understand by the same name, the moth which Harris called the many-spotted ermine moth of the South, Phalæna punctatissima, A. & S., but the individual moth whicir served as Drury's type and which he chooses to believe did not belong to the genus Hyphantria at all, but to have been a Spilosoma, and from this springs much of the misunderstanding which has arisen between these gentlemen.

A recent study of that complex of the genus Diarsia which at present is found in collections under the name rosaria Grt. has convinced me that at least two species, easily separable on the basis of maculation and colouring, have gone under this name. One of these, the true rosaria, is confined to the more northerly portions of the California coast. The other species ranges from Alaska south through British Columbia into the Pacific Northwest of the United States, and from the coast of British Columbia east through the northern coniferous forest zone to the coast of Labrador. The latter species is divisible on the basis of well defined genitalic differences into a subspecies inhabiting the Cordilleran region and a subspecies confined to the northern coniferous forest.

A study was conducted to determine if the pecan weevil, Curculio caryae, showed a preference for a particular nut cluster size for feeding and oviposition. Data indicated that selection of nuts for feeding and oviposition appeared to be a random process, without preference toward any particular nut cluster size.

A rotating wheel olfactometer was adapted for laboratory evaluation of oviposition attractants for the navel orangeworm, Paramyelois transitella (Walker). The bioassays were conducted inside a large screen cage in a glasshouse with controlled temperature and humidity. Flying female moths responded to attractant volatiles emitted from egg traps on the olfactometer and oviposited on the surface of the traps.

The first record of the occurrence in Canada of the pear fruit sawfly, Hoplocampa brevis (Klug), was made on 2 June 1964 when several larvae were collected in pear fruits near Queenston, Ontario, about one mile west of the Niagara River. The identity of the species was confirmed 26 May 1965 by Dr. H. E. Milliron, Taxonomic Section, Entomology Research Institute, Canada Department of Agriculture, Ottawa, from three adult sawflies taken in pear orchards 12–19 May 1965 and one adult that emerged in a cage 17 May 1965 from an overwintered larva.

Expanse about one inch. Primaries with inner to two-thirds black, marked by a triangular brown patch near base, resting on internal margin; a large similarly-coloured patch at outer end of cell, touching the costa, and bordered by a pale-brown line, which, starting from the costa about one-third of the distance from the apex, curves outward opposite the discal cell, and runs diagonally across to about the middle of the inner margin, and is twinned at its lower extremity by a similar line, which precedes it, and extends from inner margin to just across the median vein.

Early detection of emerald ash borer (EAB) (Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire; Coleoptera: Buprestidae) infestation is problematic, with visual indicators not appearing until late during an infestation, and detection methods often requiring substantial trade-offs between information yielded and cost. Decision makers must determine which detection methods provide sufficiently valuable information that matches their objectives and adhere to budget constraints. Notably, decision makers from different organisations often have different objectives; hence their perceptions of costs and benefits of these choices can vary. Economic thought and analysis can provide useful insights for decision makers concerned with understanding and balancing costs and benefits associated with detection strategies. Here we provide a brief review of economic studies of EAB and present a conceptual framework on the detection strategy problem drawing on “information economics”.

Aerial colour infra-red photographs were used to detect grasshopper damage to cereal grains, determine extent of damage, estimate crop yield, and identify crops. The detection and identification of grasshopper damage was facilitated by the development of a dichotomous key which differentiates grasshopper damage from other crop anomalies. Crop types and yield were determined from correlations between the optical density of the photographs and the biomass of standing crops.

Cost of an aerial survey was estimated at $0.02 per hectare as compared with ground survey cost of $0.20 per hectare. Information provided by an aerial survey of damage has the potential to assist grain growers, extension personnel, and researchers in evaluating the influence of grasshoppers on grain production

On July 1, 1893, the writer collected a number of mealy bugs on clover (Trifolium pratense) at Ithaca, N. Y. They were found at about the level of the ground between the several stems of the plant, and also on the roots under the soil. On July 17 of this year the same insect was found on the same plant at Agricultural College, Mich. As they were both supposed to be D. trifolii, Forbes, a comparison was made with the original description.
