Gynandromorphs have been reported from many orders of insects and especially from those orders in which large numbers of individuals have been collected or reared. It is therefore not surprising that, with the accumulation of large scries, ephemerid gynandromorphs should be found occasionally and it seems advisable to put descriptions of such individuals on record. This is one of a series of papers on the insect life of the Big Bend Region of Trans-Pecos, Texas, in which the author plans to present a fairly complete picture of the insect and animal life of that little known region. The area is composed of Presidio and Jeff Davis Counties, the former mainly Lower Sonoran in its faunal affinities, the latter principally Upper Sonoran and partly Transitional. Each county has its own mountain system; Presidio County the Chinati Mountains and Jeff Davis County the Davis Range. The Chinatis are desert mountains; the Davis are forested with oaks and pines.

[In 1891 Mr. Chas. Robertson wrote (Tr. Am. Ent. Soc., XVIII., 49); “After careful study, I have been unable to determine more than two of Smith's species” of Andrena; and went on to explain that Smith's descriptions omitted certain characters which were necessary for the exact determination of the species. It is probable that Mr. Robertson did not have before him many of Smith's species, and hence, naturally, could not recognize them in his material; but it is nevertheless true that the determination of Smithian Andrenœ from the description alone is often a matter of great uncertainty.

Few political areas in North America offer so much in the way of interest and instruction to the student of the geographical distribution of bumblebees as the Province of Alberta in western Canada. This is due not only to the fact that extremes in elevation between certain portions of Alberta bring together species of pronounced northern and southern tendencies, a condition duplicated in many parts of western North America, but likewise to the fact that Alberta is a meeting ground of species with decided eastern and western affinities. A somewhat similar state of affairs, though less marked, occurs in the Dakotas as attested by a study of approximately 900 specimens of bumblebees from South Dakota submitted to me for determination by Professor H. C. Severin and recorded by him in the “Sixteenth Annual Report of the State Entomologist of South Dakota,” 1925, pp. 17-20.

The white pine weevil, Pissodes strobi Peck, is a serious pest of several pines, Pinus sp. and spruces, Picea sp., and is an exceptionally difficult insect to control because its entire life, except for the adult stage, is spent inside the terminal leader of the host tree (Harman and Kulman 1968; MacAloney 1930; Rose and Lindquist 1973; Sullivan 1957). To protect the trees, the weevil must be controlled prior to oviposition; this has been thus far accomplished only by massive, repeated applications of insecticides such as methoxychlor (DeBoo and Campbell 1971, 1972). Application of such a conventional insecticide, however, may have adverse effects on beneficial insects such as pollinators, predators, and parasites as well as some of the non-insect fauna.

This tribe, to the initiated, is readily distinguished by the eyes, which are usually quite differently shaped, rarely smooth and shining, and always distinctly facetted, although a few females have small ellipsoidal or somewhat rounded eyes, as in the tribes Photopsidini and Sphaerphthalmini, and therefore, if the greatest care is not given to other characters, could be confused with certain genera in those tribes.

The New World fauna of the genus Oxytorus Förster, 1869 (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) comprises 11 species, two of them, O. bahiensisnew species and O. sinopaenew species, both from eastern Brazil, are described as new. New data about distribution and variation of several species are reported. Oxytorus peruvianus Alvarado, Bordera, and Rodríguez-Berrío, 2011 is reported for the first time from Brazil and Ecuador, and O. alfredi Gauld and Mallet, 2000 from Guatemala, Mexico, and Trinidad and Tobago. An illustrated key to the New World species of Oxytorus is provided.

The apple aphid population density on 1-year-old trees under controlled conditions of decreasing temperatures and photoperiods equivalent to 1 August through 14 November 1967, remained almost static up to the time of apple tree defoliation. Alate forms disappeared and reproduction levelled off after a 13.3 hr, 17 °C light, and a 12 °C dark temperature were programmed. Aphids left the apex of the tree after vegetative growth ceased and became distributed more or less evenly over the older leaves. Egg deposition occurred after the photoperiod became shorter than 11.8/24 hr and temperatures less than 12 °C during the light period, 8 °C during darkness. This "autumn population" of aphids with no external detrimental biotic or extreme climatic effects produced winter eggs equal to one-third its numbers at the time of beginning oviposition.

In October, 1953, an estimated 20 per cent of the sheep in “The Green” section of Bell Island, Conception Bay, Newfoundland, were infested with blowfly larvae. In some instances the infestation was so severe that the sheep died from the attack.

Larvae collected from an infested sheep were reared on Pard (Swift Canadian Company, Toronto) dog food. The flies were considered by Mr. J. F. McAlpine, Systematic Entomology Unit, Entomology Division, Ottawa, to be of Phaenicia sericata (Mg.). Mr. McAlpine (in litt.) hoted that the Newfonndland specimens differed slightly from Hall's concept of P. sericata in colour, degree of pollinosity, and width of from in the male; however, a small series of reared adults was all that was available from Newfoundland and these differences may fall within the limits of variation for such a common, widespread species.

We examined whether collection time (pre-winter vs. post-winter) influenced adult and female emergence success and body mass of wheat stem sawfly, Cephus cinctus Norton (Hymenoptera: Cephidae), from four Montana populations in 2005-2006. Adult emergence was generally higher from post-harvest material in post-winter collections but varied widely among populations. No significant effect of collection time on male-biased adult emergence from post-harvest residue collected near Conrad (37% vs. 31%) was detected, although adult emergence was greater for post-winter collection than for pre-winter collections from sites near Havre (90% vs. 81%), near Amsterdam (88% vs. 41%), and near Loring (67% vs. 0%); these three populations had a bias towards adult females that exceeded 2:1. Adult body mass was greater for post-winter-collected males (30% higher) and females (15%) only from near Amsterdam. Diapausing C. cinctus larvae overwintering under field conditions had better adult emergence, and spring collection is recommended in order to minimize time allocated to acquiring C. cinctus populations for research.

Monelliopsis bissellisp.nov., Monelliopsis pallidasp.nov., and Monelliopsis quadrimaculatasp.nov. are described and their relationship with other known species is discussed. The taxonomic position of the genus Monelliopsis Richards is assessed and a key for the identification of the species of this aphid genus is presented.

Length, 3.6 mm.; ceph.: long, 1.4 mm.; broad, I mm. Cephilothorax, sternum, femora i. and ii., blackish; rest of legs i. and ii. pale yellowish; legs iii. and iv. yellow-brown, the femora scarcely darker; abdomen black above, with a narrow white band across the middle and a white spot on each anterior lower side; venter pale. Cephalothorax broad, in ♂ a little narrower; posterior row of eyes procurved, the P. M. E. oval, fully their diameter apart, and about as far from the P. S. E.; anterior row strongly procurved, the A. M. E. fully their diameter apart, and about as far from the larger A. S. E. Sternum oval, pointed behind; legs of moderate length, femora i. and ii. stouter than others, femora iii. slightly excised before the tip behind. Abdomen not constricted, quite broad, somewhat depressed, epigynuin appearing much like M. montana, Em., but the openings are farther apart and more oblique. Tibia of ♂ palpus has short projection at tip on the outer side; the bulb is triangular in side view, the red parallel marks are along the outer edge; near the middle is a short tube.
