A key, bibliographies, and synonymies are given for the three species of Steremnius Schoen. S. scrobiculatus (Mann.) is considered a synonym of S. tuberosus Gyll.

While making a study of the larvae of certain species of Noctuidae, the writer was impressed by differences observed in the structure of the hypopharynx. A survey of the literature reveals that, though some workers have paid a certain amount of attention to this organ in larval Lepidoptera, the literature on the subject is not extensive.

The ideal method of storing a large collection of insects in liquid should have the attributes of compactness, accessibility to specific vials, minimum servicing, and adequate space for expansion. I tried several methods, each of which failed to meet all of these requirements, before developing a storage system that has proved very satisfactory for an expanding collection of immature stages of bark beetles. Since other workers may also have a similar storage problem, the construction details of the special rack used are shown in Fig. 1, and a brief explanation of other details of the method follows.

Understanding movements of Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) into berry fruit crops from wild-fruit hosts in borders of semi-natural agroecosystems, such as lowbush blueberry, is important to determining harvesting time and managing wild-fruit diversity near crops. This study aimed to inventory the wild-fruit hosts associated with lowbush blueberry (Ericaceae) production in Québec, Canada, near the limits of lowbush blueberry’s eastern North American range. We also tested the hypothesis that fruit traits of berry fruit species present in or near lowbush blueberry fields might explain field infestation levels. Flies of both sexes emerged from five wild-fruit species in 2016, to which six more species were added in 2017. The most productive wild-fruit hosts were Cornus canadensis (Cornaceae) and Aralia hispida (Araliaceae) (> 100 emerged flies/100 g of fruit) in 2016, to which Prunus pensylvanica (Rosaceae) and Rubus idaeus (Rosaceae) were added in 2017. Among nine variables considered in statistical modelling (fruit size, sugar content, and reflected colour bands) and taxonomic family (a nominal variable), none could explain field infestation levels over two years. In lab tests comparing fruits of Cornus canadensis, a common weed within fields, and lowbush blueberries, mated D. suzukii females laid twice as many eggs on blueberries, but both species were equally suitable for development.

Male crickets belonging to the genus Loxoblemmus Saussure (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) often exhibit exaggerated facial structures with characteristic projections. Whether these structures are stable within a single species is not certified. We collected Loxoblemmus angulatus Bey-Bienko and reared the second generation under 16:8, 14:10, and 12:12 light:dark photoperiods. Body morphology of adults was measured and development days were recorded. The results showed that short daytime photoperiod made them develop slowly. Males became larger after longer developmental days. Head width was wider in males and horns on head were more exaggerated in large individuals than in small ones. Head width was allometric against pronotum width. Our study shows that the male head morphology in L. angulatus is strongly influenced by development days and it is not suitable as taxonomic characters.

It is reported from various quarters that V. Californica has within a year or two first been observed in British Columbia, where it is now regarded as something new and strange. It has been suggested to me that a few facts about it, as to California and Oregon, would be of interest.

About the last of March my friend, Mr. Allen Curtiss, a botanist, brought me some Orange twigs infested with the Orange Scale Insect (Aspidiotus Gloverii). On examining them with my pocket lens, I was surprised to see numerous small black mites running in and out of the scales, and which no doubt prey upon the eggs of the Scale Insect, and probably prevents their increase.

The genus Decanematus is recorded for the first time in North America, and a new species D. dulichus is described. A key is provided for the three known species.

Female. Length 1.5 mm., thorax and abdomen dark brownish black, the latter without lighter bands. Legs fuscous brown, all tibiae with broad pale bands.

Antenna. front and palpi dull blackish brown. Scutellum dull black, remainder of dorsum and metanotum dark brownish black, shining; pleura dark brownish. Coxae, femora, bases and apices of tibiae dark brown, each tibia with a broad fairly well defined dirty white band beginning at basal one fourth and extending to apical one third of tibia. A11 legs with subappressed fuscous hairs in length about equal to the diameter of the joint which bears them; leg hairs pale yellowish in region of the pale tibial bands. Anterior wing veins brownish; entire membrane infuscated. Halteres with base of stalk brownish, apex and knob pale lemon yellow.

Phyllonorycter elmaella n sp. is described from specimens reared from ptychonomous mines on the lower surface of apple leaves from the vicinity of Vancouver, B.C. The species is compared with European P. sorbi (Frey) and the Japanese P. sorbicola (Kumata) n. comb., to which it is more closely similar than to species attacking apple and related trees in Eastern North America. The species has three generations a year and overwinters in the pupal stage.

During studies on different aspects of cricket (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) biology in Hawaii, we observed many toads, Bufo marinus (L.), in areas inhabited by the field crickets Teleogryllus oceanicus (Le Guillou) and Modicogryllus conspersus Walker. The research reported here was intended to determine if B. marinus is a predator of these crickets and, if so, the relative amount of predation on each. We also tested the possibility that B. marinus locates crickets by orienting to cricket acoustical signals.

Related to crassipes Meigen, to which it traces in my key (Tr. Royal Can. Inst., XV. 252, 1926). It is readily distinguished by the wholly black posterior femora, presence of abundant erect black hair on the upper surface of the anterior tarsi and in having the basal segment of the anterior tarsi shorter than the following three segments instead of longer than the apical four segments. Length 4.75 mm.

Ephemerella uenoi Allen & Edmunds was described but not named by Ueno (1953) from a single nymph collected by the Japanese Himalayan Expedition in Nepal in 1952. Allen & Edmunds (1963) named this mayfly from Ueno's description and figure, and placed the species in the subgenus Drunella Needham.

Cassida azurea Fab. was incorrectly identified as C. hemisphaerica Hbst. in the paper entitled “Biology of the tortoise beetle, Cassida hemisphaerica (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), a possible biological control agent for bladder campion, Silene cucubalus (Caryophyllaceae), in Canada”, Can. Ent. 108: 945–954, 1976. Thus, all references to C. hemisphaerica in that paper, with the exception of those in sections Geographic Distribution and Recorded Host Plants, should read C. azurea.

I am able to complete the history of M. phaeton, part of which I communicated to the Can. Ent. in Jan'y, 1869, vol. 1, p. 59.

The eggs are laid in large clusters of from 200 to 400 each, upon the under side of leaves of chelone glabra. They are sub-conical, truncated, ribbed on upper half, yellow when laid, but soon turn to crimson. In 19 or 20 days, as Mr. Scudder informs me, they hatch As the eggs found by me (13th June) had been deposited some days, I could not verify that point.
