We previously demonstrated that intra-uterine growth-restricted (IUGR) Yucatan miniature pigs develop modestly elevated blood pressure (BP) as young adults. The present study evaluated the effects of a post-weaning Western-style, high-salt-fat-sugar (HSFS) diet on early programming of BP. IUGR piglets (3 d old, 0·77 (sem 0·04) kg, n 6) were paired with normal weight (NW) same-sex littermates (1·14 (sem 0·03) kg, n 6) and fed milk replacer for 4 weeks. A third littermate was left with the sow (SF; 1·01 (sem 0·05) kg, n 6). When 4 weeks old, all pigs were placed on a HSFS diet ad libitum for 5 h/d. When 11 months old, telemeters were implanted to measure BP in pigs before (4·5 % NaCl) and after (0·5 % NaCl) a 7 d reduced salt challenge. At necropsy, nephron numbers were determined. Before sexual maturity, IUGR pigs had greater relative feed intake (P < 0·05), and experienced catch-up growth with greater adiposity, with correlations between adiposity and BP (P < 0·05). Adult IUGR pigs had 26–34 % fewer nephrons and higher diastolic BP (107·7 (sem 4·9) mmHg, P = 0·044) than NW (97·2 (sem 1·8) mmHg) and SF (98·9 (sem 5·3) mmHg) pigs. Systolic BP was similar among the three groups, but was significantly elevated compared with levels previously reported for a control diet. Salt restriction reduced BP in all groups (P < 0·05), but with no differences (P>0·05) in the degree of salt sensitivity among groups. In conclusion, a post-weaning Western-style diet exacerbates early programming of diastolic BP in Yucatan miniature swine, whereas systolic BP is more sensitive to postnatal diet.

There is no dietary strategy that has yet been specifically advocated for haemophilia. Therefore, we sought to assess the effect of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet in adolescents with haemophilia. In this parallel trial, forty male adolescents with haemophilia were dichotomised into the DASH group or control group for 10 weeks. The serum high sensitivity C-reactive protein, IL-6, complete blood count (CBC), serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase, partial thromboplastin time (PTT), waist circumference (WC), percentage of body fat, fat-free mass and liver steatosis were measured at the beginning and end of the study. Serum vitamin C was measured as a biomarker of compliance with the DASH diet. The DASH diet was designed to include high amounts of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products, as well as low amounts of saturated fats, cholesterol, refined grains, sweets and red meat. Serum vitamin C in the DASH group was significantly increased compared with the control (P = 0·001). There was a significant reduction in WC (P = 0·005), fat mass (P = 0·006), hepatic fibrosis (P = 0·02) and PTT (P = 0·008) in the DASH group, compared with the control. However, there were no significant differences regarding other selected outcomes between groups. Patients in the DASH group had significantly greater increase in the levels of erythrocyte, Hb and haematocrit, as compared with the control. Adherence to the DASH diet in children with haemophilia yielded significant beneficial effects on body composition, CBC, inflammation and liver function.

The short-term effect of soya protein, polydextrose and their combination on energy intake (EI) was investigated in Chinese. In total, twenty-seven healthy, normotensive and lean Chinese men aged 21–40 years were given four different soyabean curd preloads with or without polydextrose. The study was a repeated-measure, randomised, cross-over design. The consumption of high-protein soyabean curd alone or in addition with polydextrose as a preload led to greater reduction in EI at a subsequent meal. A similar observation was also found after intake of low-protein soyabean curd with polydextrose. The gut hormone responses mirrored the reduction in food intake. It appears that incorporation of polydextrose either with low- or high-protein soyabean curd could be a potential strategy to reduce EI and assist with weight management. The popular consumption of soyabean curd in Chinese makes it an ideal vehicle for incorporation of polydextrose. This evidence-based dietary approach can serve as a guideline for developing functional foods for weight reduction and weight maintenance.

In our previous study, we demonstrated that abstaining from meat, for 1 month, by healthy omnivores (lacto-ovovegetarian model) resulted in a statistical decrease in pancreatic secretion as measured by faecal elastase-1 output. However, no correlation between relative and non-relative changes of energy and nutrient consumption and pancreatic secretion was documented. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to assess the changes of exocrine pancreatic secretion with a more restrictive dietetic modification, by applying a vegan diet. A total of twenty-one healthy omnivores (sixteen females and five males) participated in the prospective study lasting for 6 weeks. The nutrient intake and faecal output of pancreatic enzymes (elastase-1, chymotrypsin and lipase) were assessed twice during the study. Each assessment period lasted for 7 d: the first before the transition to the vegan diet (omnivore diet) and the second during the last week of the study (vegan diet). The dietary modification resulted in a significant decrease in faecal elastase-1 (P < 0·05) and chymotrypsin output (P < 0·04). The lipase excretion remained unchanged. The decrease in proteolytic enzymes was documented to be positively correlated with a decreased protein intake (P < 0·05). In addition, elastase-1 and chymotrypsin outputs were also related to the changes of protein type, plant v. animal (P < 0·04 and P < 0·03, respectively). It was concluded that significant reduction and modification of protein intake due to a short-term vegan diet resulted in an adaptation of pancreatic protease secretion in healthy volunteers.

To assess the changes in the relationship between serum Mg and blood lipids of Chinese adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) or central obesity, a total of 8163 subjects (mean age 59·6 years, 54·9 % men) were analysed. Participants were classified according to blood Mg (below 0·65 mmol/l, 0·65–0·95 mmol/l and above 0·95 mmol/l), T2D (yes/no) and central obesity (yes/no). Blood lipids (TAG, total cholesterol (TC), HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol) were determined by standardised methods and conditions. A significant increase in blood lipids, with the exception of HDL-cholesterol, across progressive Mg groups in all subjects was noted (P<0·05). TAG, TC, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were significantly higher among subjects with central obesity compared with those without central obesity (P<0·05). A significant increase in TAG, TC and LDL-cholesterol across progressive Mg groups was observed in subjects without T2D (P<0·05). However, no significant change of HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol across progressive Mg groups was observed in subjects with T2D (P>0·05). TAG, TC, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were significantly higher among subjects with T2D than those without T2D (P<0·05). Multivariable models for TAG and LDL-cholesterol failed to attain statistical significance in diabetics, by using a generalised linear or parsimonious model. TAG, TC, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were significantly higher among subjects with T2D or central obesity. Blood lipids, with the exception of HDL-cholesterol, were associated with serum Mg, but this association was somehow influenced by T2D in LDL-cholesterol. In addition, multivariable models for both TAG and LDL-cholesterol failed to attain statistical significance among subjects with T2D, different from subjects without T2D.

Benefits of resistant starch (RS) consumption on host physiology encompass microbial activity-derived attenuation of intestinal inflammation. However, little is known about anti-inflammatory properties of RS of type 4. This study compared the effects of transglycosylated starch (TGS) consumption on the jejunal barrier function and expression of genes related to inflammation, barrier function and the mucosal defence in jejunum, ileum, caecum and colon of pigs. Moreover, interactions of TGS-induced alterations in bacterial metabolites and composition with host mucosal responses were assessed using sparse partial least squares regression and relevance network analysis. Intestinal samples were collected after pigs (n 8/diet; 4 months of age) were fed the experimental diets for 10 d. Consumption of TGS did not modify jejunal barrier function and gene expression. By contrast, TGS down-regulated the caecal expression of zonula occludens-1 and mucin 2 and of genes within the toll-like receptor 4 and NF-κB pro-inflammatory signalling cascade. Relevance networks revealed a microbiome signature on ileal, caecal and colonic mucosal signalling as TGS-derived changes in bacterial genera and fermentation acids, such as propionic acid, correlated with the differently expressed genes in ileum, caecum and colon of pigs. In conclusion, the present findings suggest certain anti-inflammatory capabilities of TGS by down-regulating the expression of pro-inflammatory pathways in the caecal mucosa, which seems to be mediated, at least in part, by TGS-induced changes in microbial action in the large intestine.

1. Three experiments involving sixty-two growing-finishing pigs from 28 to 90 kg body-weight were conducted to investigate the effect of environmental temperature on the thiamin requirement of growing-finishing pigs. Three temperatures (20°, 30° and 35°) were used.

2. Under these experimental conditions, average daily weight gain indicated no effect of environmental temperature on thiamin requirement. By using erythrocyte transketolase (EC 2.2.1.1) activity and its percentage stimulation by thiamin pyrophosphate (TPP stimulation per cent) as criteria, there was a significant effect of environmental temperature on the thiamin requirement of growing-finishing pigs. At 20°, the thiamin requirement for maintaining maximum transketolase activity or minimum TPP stimulation per cent was found to be approximately 3·3 mg/kg diet; at 30°, the requirement was between 3·7 and 4·0 mg/kg diet. As estimated from erythrocyte transketolase activity, and the rate of TPP stimulation per cent increase, the thiamin requirement might be higher than 4·0 mg/kg diet at 35°.

3. There was a significant effect of environmental temperature on daily weight gain and food intake. The rate of weight gain and food intake decreased with increasing temperature. The efficiency of food utilization generally showed no significant differences among temperatures.

Three experiments were conducted to estimate the effects of single intramuscular (IM) administrations of vitamin E on blood plasma and tissue concentrations of α-tocopherol in sheep. In Expt 1, plasma kinetics of α-tocopherol in sheep (n 30) were investigated following IM administration of three doses (ten sheep/dose) of DL-α-tocopheryl acetate, (20, 40 and 60 mg/kg live weight). Plasma profiles of α-tocopherol consisted of a lag phase followed by an apparent first-order absorption and elimination phase. The rate of absorption and elimination, as well as the lag phase, were independent of the dose, but the extent of absorption was directly proportional to dose. In Expt 2 (eighteen experimental and five control sheep), the animals were injected as in Expt 1 and were killed at 0, 80 and 176 h. Increases in α-tocopherol levels in organs were much higher than in plasma. Some tissues such as liver, spleen, lung and adrenal appeared to exhibit rapid absorption and elimination phases. The amount absorbed was proportional to the dose administered. Other organs such as heart, kidney and pancreas had a slow elimination rate. In Expt 3, D-α-tocopherol was injected IM into ten sheep at either 604 mg or 1208 mg. The mean hepatic α-tocopherol concentrations in both groups rose rapidly and after 4 weeks of dosing its concentrations were higher than the predosing levels. The increase in hepatic tocopherol concentrations were higher following 1208 mg dosing than 604 mg D-α-tocopherol. No simple relationship existed between plasma and hepatic α-tocopherol concentrations. This suggests a difference in body mechanisms controlling vitamin E in blood and liver.

Results of international correlation and migrant studies suggest that dietary fat promotes carcinogenesis in hormone-sensitive sites, but this is disputed. In the present study, we used a Noble rat model of sex hormone-induced cancers to examine the effect of a high-fat diet on the incidence and latency of prostate and mammary cancer in male (n 139) and female (n 72) animals respectively. We also measured α-tocopherol levels in female breast tissue to determine whether a high intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids depletes antioxidant defence in target tissues, providing a possible potentiating mechanism for carcinogenesis. Results showed a very high incidence of hormone-induced adenocarcinomas of prostate and mammary gland, irrespective of diet. There was no difference in the pattern of carcinogenesis in different prostatic locations, weight of the prostate, or weight gain between male rats on the high-fat diet compared with the control (standard, low-fat) diet. In female rats, the incidence of mammary cancer and the body-weight gain were the same in both dietary groups, and breast α-tocopherol was also unaffected by dietary fat intake. Our present results are supportive of recent cohort studies that reported no significant association between intake of fat and the development of human prostate and breast cancer, and do not support a role for dietary fat in promoting sex hormone-induced prostate and mammary carcinogenesis.

The effects of feeding beef suet (mostly saturated and monoenoic fatty acids), sunflower oil (rich in n-6 fatty acids) and fish oil (rich in n-3 fatty acids) on the response of mesenteric, omental, popliteal and perirenal adipocytes to experimentally-induced local inflammation were studied in adult guinea pigs. After 6 weeks on the experimental diets, the animals were fed standard chow, and lipopolysaccharide was injected unilaterally daily for 4 d to induce swelling of one popliteal lymph node. Basal lipolysis in the perinodal adipocytes of all depots studied was higher in the sunflower oil-fed animals than in the controls fed on standard chow, and lower in those fed on suet or fish oil. Dietary lipids altered rates of lipolysis during incubation with 10-5 M noradrenaline in all samples studied from the locally-activated popliteal depot, but only in adipocytes within 5 mm of a large lymph node in the other depots. The fish-oil diet attenuated the spread of increased lipolysis within the locally-activated popliteal adipose tissue, and from this depot to other node-containing depots. These experiments show that n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids promote and n-3 fatty acids suppress the spread of immune activation to adipocytes within and between depots, and alter the sensitivity of perinodal adipocytes to noradrenaline. Dietary effects are reduced or absent in adipocytes in sites remote from lymph nodes, and thus such samples do not adequately represent processes in perinodal adipose tissue. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that perinodal adipocytes interact with adjacent lymphoid cells during immune responses.

The intake of carbohydrates has been evaluated cross-sectionally, but not longitudinally in an ageing American adult population. The aim of the present study was to examine trends in the intake of dietary carbohydrates and their major food sources among the Framingham Heart Study Offspring (FOS) cohort, which had been uniquely tracked for 17 years in the study. The FOS cohort was recruited in 1971–1975. Follow-up examinations were conducted, on average, every 4 years. Dietary data collection began in 1991 (examination 5) using a validated semi-quantitative FFQ. The study included 2894 adults aged ≥ 25 years with complete dietary data in at least three examinations from 1991 to 2008. Descriptive statistics were generated using SAS version 9.3, and a repeated-measures model was used to examine trends in the intake of carbohydrates and their food sources in the whole sample, and by sex and BMI category. Over 17 years of follow-up, the percentage of energy from total carbohydrates (51·0–46·8 %; P for trend < 0·001) and total sugars (18·2–16·6 %; P for trend < 0·001) decreased. There was a decrease in the percentage of energy from fructose (5·4–4·7 %; P for trend < 0·001) and sucrose (9·8–8·8 %; P for trend < 0·001). Dietary fibre intake increased (18·0–19·2 g/d; P for trend < 0·001). The number of weekly servings of yeast bread, soft drinks/soda, cakes/cookies/quick breads/doughnuts, potatoes, milk, pasta, rice and cooked grains, fruit juice/drinks, potato chips/maize chips/popcorn, and lunch foods (e.g. pizzas and burgers) decreased significantly (P for trend < 0·001), while the intake of ready-to-eat cereals, legumes, fruits, dairy products, candy and ice cream/sherbet/frozen yogurt increased significantly (P for trend<0·04). Similar trends were observed when the analyses were stratified by sex and BMI. The present results suggest favourable trends in dietary carbohydrate consumption, but dietary guidelines for fruits, vegetables and fibre were not met in this cohort.

Malnutrition during foetal life can induce modifications in the phenotype of an individual. The present study aimed to observe effects of low foetal life protein provision on modifications of the phenotype and changes in the progeny of 1-year-old female mink (F1 generation) offspring of mothers fed a low-protein diet. Traits studied included reproductive performance, energy and protein metabolism, and key hepatic enzymes associated with glucose homeostasis and metabolic hormones. The F0 generation offspring were fed either a low-protein (14 % of metabolisable energy (ME) from protein – FLP1) or an adequate-protein (29 % of ME from protein – FAP1) diet for the last 17·9 (sd 3·6) d of gestation. The F1 dams were studied at birth and at 1 year of age, during their first reproductive cycle, after maintenance on an adequate diet from birth and thereafter. Metabolic traits during gestation and lactation were largely unaffected by foetal life protein provision, but birth weight in the F2 generation was higher (P = 0·003) among FLP2 kits than among FAP2 kits. Furthermore, the relative abundance of pyruvate kinase mRNA was significantly (P = 0·007) lower, and fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase mRNA tended (P = 0·08) to be lower in FLP2 foetuses than in FAP2 foetuses, showing some similar difference in the F2 generation and F1 generation foetuses, suggesting an effect on some hepatic enzymes affecting glucose homeostasis being transmitted from the F1 to the F2 generation. These findings indicate that even though energy and nitrogen metabolism displayed no effect of protein provision during early life, programming effects still appeared at the molecular level in the following generation.

Recent studies indicate that l-glutamate (l-Glu), abundant in many foods, is a stimulator of gastric vagal afferent nerves. The aim of the present study was to examine the possibility that l-Glu supplementation of a protein-rich liquid diet may prevent the incidence of diarrhoea during repetitive intra-gastric tube feeding. The gastric vagal afferent nerve recording of rats indicated that intra-gastric administration of a protein-rich liquid diet supplemented with 0·5 % monosodium glutamate enhanced the basal afferent activities seen with the protein-rich diet alone. The examination of the faeces showed that the addition of monosodium glutamate to the liquid diet significantly prevented the incidence of diarrhoea induced by repetitive gastric feeding. In conclusion, supplementation of an enteral liquid diet with free l-Glu may ameliorate diarrhoea during intra-gastric tube feeding by sending visceral glutamate information from the stomach to the brain.

It was previously shown that a high plasma concentration of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) persisted after a fatty breakfast, but not after an isoenergetic carbohydrate breakfast, adversely affecting glucose tolerance. The higher concentration after the fatty breakfast may in part have been a result of different mobilization rates of fatty acids. This factor can be investigated as NEFA mobilized from tissues are monounsaturated to a greater extent than those deposited from a typical meal. Twenty-four middle-aged healthy Caucasian men were given oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT), and for 28 d isoenergetic breakfasts of similar fat composition but of low (L) or moderate (M) fat content. The composition of NEFA in fasting and postprandial plasma was determined on days 1 and 29. No significant treatment differences in fasting NEFA composition occurred on day 29. During the OGTT and 0–1 h following breakfast there was an increase in plasma long-chain saturated NEFA but a decrease in monounsaturated NEFA (μg/100 μg total NEFA; P<0·001). Between 1 and 3 h following breakfast treatment differences occurred for total saturated and total monounsaturated fatty acids (μg/100 μg total NEFA; P<0·05), expressed as an increase in 18 : 1 and decreases in 16 : 0 and 17 : 0 in treatment M relative to treatment L (P<0·05). Serum insulin attained 35 and 65 mU/l in treatments M and L respectively during this period. Negative correlations were found between 16 : 0 in fasting plasma and both waist:hip circumference (P=0·0009) and insulin response curve area during OGTT (within treatment M, P=0·0001). It is concluded that a normal postprandial insulin response is associated with a rapid change in plasma saturated:monounsaturated NEFA. It is proposed that this change is the result of a variable suppression of fat mobilization, which may partly account for a large difference in postprandial total plasma NEFA between fatty and carbohydrate meals.

The effects of dietary lipids on the fatty acid composition of rat pancreatic membranes and acinar cell function were investigated. Weaning rats were fed for 8 weeks on one of two diets which contained 100 g virgin olive oil (OO) or sunflowerseed oil (SO)/kg. Pancreatic plasma membranes were isolated and fatty acids determined. Amylase secretion and cytosolic concentrations of Ca2+ and Mg2+ were measured in pancreatic acini. Membrane fatty acids were profoundly affected by the diets; the rats fed OO had higher levels of 18:1n-9 (42·86 (sem 1·99) %) and total MUFA compared with the animals fed SO (25·37 (sem 1·11) %). Reciprocally, the SO diet resulted in greater levels of total and n-6 PUFA than the OO diet. The most striking effect was observed for 18:2n-6 (SO 17·88 (sem 1·32) %; OO 4·45 (sem 0·60) %), although the levels of 20:4n-6 were also different. The proportion of total saturated fatty acids was similar in both groups, and there was only a slight, not significant (P=0·098), effect on the unsaturation index. Compared with the OO group, acinar cells from the rats fed SO secreted more amylase at rest but less in response to cholecystokinin octapeptide, and this was paralleled by reduced Ca2+ responses to the secretagogue. The results confirm that rat pancreatic cell membranes are strongly influenced by the type of dietary fat consumed and this is accompanied by a modulation of the secretory activity of pancreatic acinar cells that involves, at least in part, Ca2+ signalling.

Improving health through better nutrition of the population may contribute to enhanced efficiency and sustainability of healthcare systems. A recent expert meeting investigated in detail a number of methodological aspects related to the discipline of nutrition economics. The role of nutrition in health maintenance and in the prevention of non-communicable diseases is now generally recognised. However, the main scope of those seeking to contain healthcare expenditures tends to focus on the management of existing chronic diseases. Identifying additional relevant dimensions to measure and the context of use will become increasingly important in selecting and developing outcome measurements for nutrition interventions. The translation of nutrition-related research data into public health guidance raises the challenging issue of carrying out more pragmatic trials in many areas where these would generate the most useful evidence for health policy decision-making. Nutrition exemplifies all the types of interventions and policy which need evaluating across the health field. There is a need to start actively engaging key stakeholders in order to collect data and to widen health technology assessment approaches for achieving a policy shift from evidence-based medicine to evidence-based decision-making in the field of nutrition.

The effect of a high dose of 3-hydroxy-3-methylbutyrate (HMB, a leucine catabolite) on protein metabolism was investigated in growing male lambs fed on hay and concentrate. Concentrate was supplemented with either Ca(HMB)2 (4g/kg) or Ca(C03)2 in experimental (HMB) and control groups respectively. Both groups consisted of six 2-month old lambs. Three complementary methods to study protein metabolism were carried out consecutively 2·5 months after beginning the dietary treatment: whole body phenylalanine fluxes, postprandial plasma free amino acid time course and fractional rates of protein synthesis in skeletal muscles. Feeding a high dose of HMB led to a significant increase in some plasma free amino acids compared with controls. Total, oxidative and non-oxidative phenylalanine fluxes were not modified by dietary HMB supplementation. Similarly, an acute infusion of HMB, in the control group, did not change these fluxes. In skeletal muscles, fractional rates of protein synthesis were not affected by long-term dietary supplementation with HMB. Taken together our results showed that administration of a high dose of HMB to lambs was able to modify plasma free amino acid pattern without any effect on whole-body protein turnover and skeletal muscle protein synthesis

The present study was conducted to determine the effects of α-lipoic acid (ALA) on fatty acid mobilisation and ketone body production in female broiler chickens. In the first experiment, chickens received an intravenous infusion of ALA (0, 25 or 50 mg/kg per h) for 90 min. Blood was drawn at 30 min intervals, and plasma glucose, NEFA, free glycerol and hydroxybutyrate were analysed. In the second experiment, ALA (100 mg/kg per h) was continuously infused to chickens fed or fasted for at least 24 h. Changes in plasma metabolites for 90 min were determined. In the first experiment, as shown by the response area, ALA infusion did not affect plasma glucose but increased (P < 0·05) plasma NEFA, regardless of the dose level. In contrast, plasma hydroxybutyrate was reduced at the lower infusion rate (P < 0·05). No significant changes in plasma free glycerol were observed. In experiment 2, ALA stimulated both plasma glucose (P < 0·01) and NEFA (P < 0·001) and the responses were greater than those of controls, regardless of the feeding state. The interaction between ALA and the feeding condition had a significant effect on plasma hydroxybutyrate (P < 0·01). ALA reduced plasma hydroxybutyrate, and this response was greater in the fasted birds than in those fed. Therefore, the present study found a lowering effect of ALA on plasma hydroxybutyrate level and suggests that the ALA-induced plasma NEFA increment was attributable to decreased hepatic fatty acid oxidation in chickens.

1. Results are presented of three experiments involving 112 individually fed pigs, covering the growing period between 20 and 90 kg live weight, in which the potential performance-stimulating properties of three different compounds were studied in relation to those of a dietary supplement of 250 mg Cu/kg diet.

2. The three compounds studied and the levels of supplementation used (mg/kg diet) were: Expt I arsanilic acid (100), Expt 2 sodium salicylate (200), Expt 3 a mixture of bromide salts (200); each was added to the diets either alone or with 250mg Cu/kg diet given as CuSO4, 5H2O.

3. The diets were given wet, ‘to appetite’ twice daily up to a daily maximum of 3 kg feed/pig. Measurements of length and of back-fat thickness at a number of points were made on all carcasses at slaughter.

4. Arsanilic acid and sodium salicylate alone gave growth responses similar to those obtained with Cu alone, whereas the bromide salt had no effect on performance. None of the three compounds when added to diets in conjunction with 250mg Cu/kg diet gave results superior to those obtained with the Cu supplement alone.

5. When added to the diets alone, none of the three compounds tested nor Cu had any marked effect on any of the carcass measurements.

6. Arsanilic acid reduced total liver weight and markedly reduced the large increase in total liver Cu stores that resulted from supplementation of the diets with 250 mg Cu/kg diet.
