Byrne & Hilbert (B&H) argue that colors are reflectance properties of objects. They also claim that a necessary condition for something's being a color is that it causally explain – or be causally implicated in the explanation of – our perceptions of color. I argue that these two positions are in conflict.

Stein & Glasier suggest embryonic neural tissue grafts as a potential treatment strategy for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. As an alternative, we suggest that the family of nerve growth factor-related neurotrophins and their trk (tyrosine kinase) receptors underlie cholinergic basal forebrain (CBF) and dopaminergic substantia nigra neuron degeneration in these diseases, respectively. Therefore, treatment approaches for these disorders could utilize neurotrophins.

The main conclusion to draw from Mitchell et al's article is that it is difficult to disentangle cognitive and learning processes in contingency and causal experiments. More compelling evidence for human associate learning comes from research where, because of the type of events involved, participants are unable or unlikely to think about the relationships between the events.

Frameworks that facilitate interdisciplinary communication on the topic of teaching are certainly needed. However, these frameworks require a solid and widely accepted definition of teaching on which to build. As Kline states, the functional definition forms a good basis for productive comparative work. I briefly discuss the most contentious aspects of the functional definition, and suggest that these issues must be resolved before more detailed frameworks become useful.

From the standpoint of decision research, investigating global heuristics like LEX is not fruitful, because we know already that people use partial heuristics instead. It is necessary (1) to identify partial heuristics in different tasks, and (2) to investigate rules governing their application and especially their combination. Furthermore, research is necessary into the adequate level of resolution of the elements in the toolbox.

Epstein et al.'s “full access to Universal Grammar” position is conceptually and empirically problematic. Its shortcomings are illustrated through a brief discussion of the following issues: (1) initial versus final states of grammatical knowledge in a second language, (2) knowledge of gradience of grainmaticality, (3) optionality and retention in non-native grammars, and (4) the empirical measurement of syntactic knowledge.

Pulvermüller's discussion needs more explanation of how the proposed assemblies remain assembled after formation and how they can be accessed later among all the possible assemblies, many of which involve many of the same neurons. Alternative Hebbian strengthening mechanisms may provide additional information, and, developmental studies of the assemblies might provide insights into their evolution.

We suggest that, in animals, the core-affect system is linked to partially assimilated behavioral dispositions that act as developmental scaffolds for the ontogenetic construction of emotions. We also propose that in humans the evolution of language altered the control of emotions, leading to categories that can be adequately captured only by emotion-words.

Stanford argues that cooperators achieve and maintain correlated interaction through the objectification of moral norms. We first challenge the moral/non-moral distinction that frames Stanford's discussion. We then argue that to the extent that norms are objectified (and we hold that they are at most objectified in a very thin sense), it is not for the sake of achieving correlated interaction.

It is more likely that externalized morality that facilitated cooperation (externalized prosociality) was selected for versus other types of moral impulses. Recent research suggests that those other moral impulses may actually be at root prosocial, in that judgments about them are indirectly about avoidance of harm. Externalized prosociality may help explain why prosocial behavior benefits individuals.

Human hunter-gatherers share a suite of traits with social insects, which demonstrates convergent social evolution of these taxa prior to agriculture. Humans differ from social insects in that their divisions of labor are more competitive than cooperative. Resulting higher within-group competition in humans has been alleviated by religion and culturally imposed monogamy, both of which also find parallels among social insects.

Recent findings in anthrozoologythe study of humananimal interactionsshed light on psychological and social aspects of cruelty. Here we briefly discuss four areas that connect animal cruelty and cruelty directed toward humans: (1) voices of perpetrators and their audiences, (2) gender differences in cruelty, (3) cruelty as play, and (4) the putative relationship between animal abuse and interpersonal violence.

Are rules processes or similarity processes the default for acquisition of grammatical knowledge during natural second language acquisition? Whereas Pothos argues similarity processes are the default in the many areas he reviews, including artificial grammar learning and first language development, I suggest, citing evidence, that in second language acquisition of grammatical morphology “rules processes” may be the default.
