This chapter covers the basics of research methods to provide a common groundwork for the later chapters. This chapter covers the basics of the scientific method, common terminology used throughout the field, and basics of research design. Additionally, this chapter briefly covers many of the most common statistical techniques used throughout the social and behavioral sciences.
The present chapter presents an introduction to meta-analysis. Meta-analysis is a tool for quantitatively describing and testing effects sizes gathered from multiple studies. Frist, meta-analysts identify their research question. Second, using search engines and reference lists of review articles, researchers scour the literature for relevant effect sizes in both published and unpublished studies. Third, multiple trained researchers scan articles for relevant effect sizes and code other relevant information including sample size, scale reliability, and potential study-level moderators. Fourth, the effect sizes are meta-analyzed, which includes estimating the weighted mean as well as testing for outliers, publication bias, decline effects, and moderators. The present chapter focuses on an example of random-effects analyses of raw and corrected bivariate correlations, but also analytic approaches are also described. Fifth, the limitations of meta-analysis are discussed, along with alternatives to it, and what the future may hold for meta-analysis.
The informed consent process is designed to help ensure the ethical protections of all individuals who participate in research. The three primary tenets of informed consent that evolved from a number of different national and international initiatives are intelligence (i.e., capacity), knowingness (i.e., understanding), and voluntariness (i.e., free from undue influence or coercion). This chapter explores each of these individual tenets in detail and provides useful evidence-based strategies that can be used to increase the likelihood that consent is truly informed. It is critical that researchers maintain the highest level of rigor and incorporate empirically-supported procedures throughout the consent process.

These values help facilitate the progress of science. This chapter examines how ethical principles are important to the research profession, and explores the implications of these principles for third parties that constitute the research ecosystem. Finally, it provides some conclusions, suggested readings and ideas for future research.
The rise of the internet nowadays has significantly increased the ease and frequency with which people can access information on the web. However, this has not been coupled with relevant training on how to critically evaluate such information or how to behave when providing data for research purposes. To be able to ensure the quality of research data, it is essential for researchers to be aware of the factors that could negatively influence the validity of the data and pose threats to the internal validity of a study’s results. By being aware of the possible threats to internal validity, efforts can be made to minimize or control them during the research process.
