The recent conflict in the Middle East posed unprecedented threats, with hundreds of long-range ballistic missiles launched toward Israel, targeting military and civilian facilities including hospitals. Organizational and logistic actions were taken in Sheba Medical Center, both pre-emptively and during the conflict, preparing for a mass casualty incident while maintaining routine medical care to the population and maintaining safety of patients and staff. These included discharging patients and increasing home hospitalizations, ward evacuations, transferring patients to protected areas, and classifying patients by their vulnerability and status of protection, accelerated structural adaptation of underground spaces to house patients, and construction of a tented field hospital underground. An effective command and control system was in place to monitor protective status, and an ethical committee was convened to assist in decision-making. These measures enabled continued delivery of emergency and medical care under fire while ensuring the safety of patients and staff.

This CFD study investigates the aerodynamic characteristics of various internal grid patterns of grid fins without missile bodies, focusing on their influence on aerodynamic performance in subsonic flight regimes. Research examines four distinct grid fin lattices through comprehensive numerical simulations at Mach numbers 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5, for varying high angles of attack ranging between 0o ≤ α ≤ +45o. For validation, comparison between current numerical results and a previous experimental study results was carried out (good agreement within 9.8% error). The numerical results reveal that the diamond cell pattern demonstrates increased lift generation but incurs higher drag, while the square pattern minimises drag and pitching moment, favouring weight-efficient designs. The hexagonal grid fin excels in stall delay and post-stall performance, enhancing manoeuverability and stability at the expense of increased pitching moments. The triangular pattern offers balanced aerodynamic performance with high aerodynamic efficiency at lower speeds, making it versatile for various applications. The analysis offers key insights into grid cell pattern’s aerodynamic effects, aiding grid fin design optimisation for improved aerodynamic efficiency and controllability across various flight conditions and high angles of attack.

The contention over the quantity and quality of regional missile defenses forward-deployed by the United States in the Asia-Pacific region animates much of the US–China disagreement about strategic stability. The Chinese argue that the deployed assets exceed reasonable defensive requirements and suggest that if these missile-defense deployments continue, they will be forced to increase the size of their nuclear arsenal. In disagreement, the United States claims that regional missile defenses are defensive by design, limited in scope, and necessary to defeat a North Korean missile campaign. In this article, a series of simulation experiments were developed to empirically test these opposing arguments over missile defenses and strategic stability. The simulations indicate that current deployments are necessary for defense and proportional to the threat. The analysis also argues that current deployments do not possess the ability to alter the US–China strategic nuclear balance significantly. The article concludes with a discussion of other subjective aspects of national security that may explain Chinese concerns and explore possible ways to reassure China.

This paper seeks to provide an original examination of the nature of the proliferation of sensitive materials and technologies by Chinese entities. A number of publications have attempted to understand the issue of proliferation stemming from businesses based in China, with many having commented on the efforts undertaken both by international actors and by the Chinese government to prevent it. However, relatively few scholars have sought, in any systematic and sustained way, to understand the types of Chinese companies involved in proliferation and the evolution of their behaviour. This paper seeks to argue and account for the declining role of, and concern regarding, Chinese state-owned enterprise in the global proliferation problem. Different accounts for this change, and the relating proliferation challenge posed by China, are examined.
