Rigid meromorphic cocycles are defined in the setting of orthogonal groups of arbitrary real signature and constructed in some instances via a p-adic analogue of Borcherds’ singular theta lift. The values of rigid meromorphic cocycles at special points of an associated p-adic symmetric space are then conjectured to belong to class fields of suitable global reflex fields, suggesting an eventual framework for explicit class field theory beyond the setting of CM fields explored in the treatise of Shimura and Taniyama.

We determine explicit generators for the ring of modular forms associated with the moduli spaces of K3 surfaces with automorphism group $(\mathbb {Z}/2\mathbb {Z})^2$ and of Picard rank 13 and higher. The K3 surfaces in question carry a canonical Jacobian elliptic fibration and the modular form generators appear as coefficients in the Weierstrass-type equations describing these fibrations.

We prove the Ramanujan and Sato–Tate conjectures for Bianchi modular forms of weight at least $2$. More generally, we prove these conjectures for all regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representations of $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_2(\mathbf {A}_F)$ of parallel weight, where F is any CM field. We deduce these theorems from a new potential automorphy theorem for the symmetric powers of $2$-dimensional compatible systems of Galois representations of parallel weight.

In this work, we develop an integral representation for the partial L-function of a pair $\pi \times \tau $ of genuine irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations, $\pi $ of the m-fold covering of Matsumoto of the symplectic group $\operatorname {\mathrm {Sp}}_{2n}$ and $\tau $ of a certain covering group of $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_k$, with arbitrary m, n and k. Our construction is based on the recent extension by Cai, Friedberg, Ginzburg and the author, of the classical doubling method of Piatetski-Shapiro and Rallis, from rank-$1$ twists to arbitrary rank twists. We prove a basic global identity for the integral and compute the local integrals with unramified data. Our global results are subject to certain conjectures, but when $k=1$ they are unconditional for all m. One possible future application of this work will be a Shimura-type lift of representations from covering groups to general linear groups. In a recent work, we used the present results in order to provide an analytic definition of local factors for representations of the m-fold covering of $\operatorname {\mathrm {Sp}}_{2n}$.

We investigate the Gross–Prasad conjecture and its refinement for the Bessel periods in the case of $(\mathrm {SO}(5), \mathrm {SO}(2))$. In particular, by combining several theta correspondences, we prove the Ichino–Ikeda-type formula for any tempered irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation. As a corollary of our formula, we prove an explicit formula relating certain weighted averages of Fourier coefficients of holomorphic Siegel cusp forms of degree two, which are Hecke eigenforms, to central special values of $L$-functions. The formula is regarded as a natural generalization of the Böcherer conjecture to the non-trivial toroidal character case.

We give a vanishing and classification result for holomorphic differential forms on smooth projective models of the moduli spaces of pointed K3 surfaces. We prove that there is no nonzero holomorphic k-form for $0<k<10$ and for even $k>19$. In the remaining cases, we give an isomorphism between the space of holomorphic k-forms with that of vector-valued modular forms ($10\leq k \leq 18$) or scalar-valued cusp forms (odd $k\geq 19$) for the modular group. These results are in fact proved in the generality of lattice-polarisation.

Irregular cusps of an orthogonal modular variety are cusps where the lattice for Fourier expansion is strictly smaller than the lattice of translation. The presence of such a cusp affects the study of pluricanonical forms on the modular variety using modular forms. We study toroidal compactification over an irregular cusp, and clarify there the cusp form criterion for the calculation of Kodaira dimension. At the same time, we show that irregular cusps do not arise frequently: besides the cases when the group is neat or contains $-1$, we prove that the stable orthogonal groups of most (but not all) even lattices have no irregular cusp.

Quaternionic automorphic representations are one attempt to generalize to other groups the special place holomorphic modular forms have among automorphic representations of $\mathrm {GL}_2$. Here, we use ‘hyperendoscopy’ techniques to develop a general trace formula and understand them on an arbitrary group. Then we specialize this general formula to study quaternionic automorphic representations on the exceptional group $G_2$, eventually getting an analog of the Eichler–Selberg trace formula for classical modular forms. We finally use this together with some techniques of Chenevier, Renard and Taïbi to compute dimensions of spaces of level-$1$ quaternionic representations. On the way, we prove a Jacquet–Langlands-style result describing them in terms of classical modular forms and automorphic representations on the compact-at-infinity form $G_2^c$.

The main technical difficulty is that the quaternionic discrete series that quaternionic automorphic representations are defined in terms of do not satisfy a condition of being ‘regular’. A real representation theory argument shows that regularity miraculously does not matter for specifically the case of quaternionic discrete series.

We hope that the techniques and shortcuts highlighted in this project are of interest in other computations about discrete-at-infinity automorphic representations on arbitrary reductive groups instead of just classical ones.

We generalize bounds of Liu–Wan–Xiao for slopes in eigencurves for definite unitary groups of rank $2$ to slopes in eigenvarieties for definite unitary groups of any rank. We show that for a definite unitary group of rank $n$, the Newton polygon of the characteristic power series of the $U_p$ Hecke operator has exact growth rate $x^{1+2/{n(n-1)}}$, times a constant proportional to the distance of the weight from the boundary of weight space. The proof goes through the classification of forms associated to principal series representations. We also give a consequence for the geometry of these eigenvarieties over the boundary of weight space.

We study for each fixed integer $g \ge 2$, for all primes $\ell $ and p with $\ell \neq p$, finite regular directed graphs associated with the set of equivalence classes of $\ell $-marked principally polarized superspecial abelian varieties of dimension g in characteristic p, and show that the adjacency matrices have real eigenvalues with spectral gaps independent of p. This implies a rapid mixing property of natural random walks on the family of isogeny graphs beyond the elliptic curve case and suggests a potential construction of the Charles–Goren–Lauter-type cryptographic hash functions for abelian varieties. We give explicit lower bounds for the gaps in terms of the Kazhdan constant for the symplectic group when $g \ge 2$. As a byproduct, we also show that the finite regular directed graphs constructed by Jordan and Zaytman also has the same property.

We axiomatise the algebraic properties of toroidal compactifications of (mixed) Shimura varieties and their automorphic vector bundles. A notion of generalised automorphic sheaf is proposed which includes sheaves of (meromorphic) sections of automorphic vector bundles with prescribed vanishing and pole orders along strata in the compactification, and their quotients. These include, for instance, sheaves of Jacobi forms and weakly holomorphic modular forms. Using this machinery, we give a short and purely algebraic proof of the proportionality theorem of Hirzebruch and Mumford.

In this paper, we prove the algebraicity of some L-values attached to quaternionic modular forms. We follow the rather well-established path of the doubling method. Our main contribution is that we include the case where the corresponding symmetric space is of non-tube type. We make various aspects very explicit, such as the doubling embedding, coset decomposition, and the definition of algebraicity of modular forms via CM-points.

We introduce a holomorphic torsion invariant of log-Enriques surfaces of index two with cyclic quotient singularities of type $\frac {1}{4}(1,1)$. The moduli space of such log-Enriques surfaces with k singular points is a modular variety of orthogonal type associated with a unimodular lattice of signature $(2,10-k)$. We prove that the invariant, viewed as a function of the modular variety, is given by the Petersson norm of an explicit Borcherds product. We note that this torsion invariant is essentially the BCOV invariant in the complex dimension $2$. As a consequence, the BCOV invariant in this case is not a birational invariant, unlike the Calabi-Yau case.

We prove an asymptotic expansion of the second moment of the central values of the $\mathrm {GL}(n)\times \mathrm {GL}(n)$ Rankin–Selberg L-functions $L(1/2,\pi \otimes \pi _0)$ for a fixed cuspidal automorphic representation $\pi _0$ over the family of $\pi $ with analytic conductors bounded by a quantity that is tending to infinity. Our proof uses the integral representations of the L-functions, period with regularised Eisenstein series and the invariance properties of the analytic newvectors.

In earlier work, the first named author generalized the construction of Darmon-style $\mathcal {L}$-invariants to cuspidal automorphic representations of semisimple groups of higher rank, which are cohomological with respect to the trivial coefficient system and Steinberg at a fixed prime. In this paper, assuming that the Archimedean component of the group has discrete series we show that these automorphic $\mathcal {L}$-invariants can be computed in terms of derivatives of Hecke eigenvalues in $p$-adic families. Our proof is novel even in the case of modular forms, which was established by Bertolini, Darmon and Iovita. The main new technical ingredient is the Koszul resolution of locally analytic principal series representations by Kohlhaase and Schraen. As an application of our results we settle a conjecture of Spieß: we show that automorphic $\mathcal {L}$-invariants of Hilbert modular forms of parallel weight $2$ are independent of the sign character used to define them. Moreover, we show that they are invariant under Jacquet–Langlands transfer and, in fact, equal to the Fontaine–Mazur $\mathcal {L}$-invariant of the associated Galois representation. Under mild assumptions, we also prove the equality of automorphic and Fontaine–Mazur $\mathcal {L}$-invariants for representations of definite unitary groups of arbitrary rank. Finally, we study the case of Bianchi modular forms to show how our methods, given precise results on eigenvarieties, can also work in the absence of discrete series representations.

We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the graded algebra of automorphic forms on a symmetric domain of type IV being free. From the necessary condition, we derive a classification result. Let $M$ be an even lattice of signature $(2,n)$ splitting two hyperbolic planes. Suppose $\Gamma$ is a subgroup of the integral orthogonal group of $M$ containing the discriminant kernel. It is proved that there are exactly 26 groups $\Gamma$ such that the space of modular forms for $\Gamma$ is a free algebra. Using the sufficient condition, we recover some well-known results.

Orthogonality is a fundamental theme in representation theory and Fourier analysis. An orthogonality relation for characters of finite abelian groups (now recognized as an orthogonality relation on $\mathrm {GL}(1)$) was used by Dirichlet to prove infinitely many primes in arithmetic progressions. Orthogonality relations for $\mathrm {GL}(2)$ and $\mathrm {GL}(3)$ have been worked on by many researchers with a broad range of applications to number theory. We present here, for the first time, very explicit orthogonality relations for the real group $\mathrm {GL}(4, \mathbb R)$ with a power savings error term. The proof requires novel techniques in the computation of the geometric side of the Kuznetsov trace formula.

We prove that the Kodaira dimension of the n-fold universal family of lattice-polarised holomorphic symplectic varieties with dominant and generically finite period map stabilises to the moduli number when n is sufficiently large. Then we study the transition of Kodaira dimension explicitly, from negative to nonnegative, for known explicit families of polarised symplectic varieties. In particular, we determine the exact transition point in the Beauville–Donagi and Debarre–Voisin cases, where the Borcherds $\Phi _{12}$ form plays a crucial role.

The principal aim of this article is to attach and study $p$-adic $L$-functions to cohomological cuspidal automorphic representations $\Pi$ of $\operatorname {GL}_{2n}$ over a totally real field $F$ admitting a Shalika model. We use a modular symbol approach, along the global lines of the work of Ash and Ginzburg, but our results are more definitive because we draw heavily upon the methods used in the recent and separate works of all three authors. By construction, our $p$-adic $L$-functions are distributions on the Galois group of the maximal abelian extension of $F$ unramified outside $p\infty$. Moreover, we work under a weaker Panchishkine-type condition on $\Pi _p$ rather than the full ordinariness condition. Finally, we prove the so-called Manin relations between the $p$-adic $L$-functions at all critical points. This has the striking consequence that, given a unitary $\Pi$ whose standard $L$-function admits at least two critical points, and given a prime $p$ such that $\Pi _p$ is ordinary, the central critical value $L(\frac {1}{2}, \Pi \otimes \chi )$ is non-zero for all except finitely many Dirichlet characters $\chi$ of $p$-power conductor.

Yoshikawa in [Invent. Math. 156 (2004), 53–117] introduces a holomorphic torsion invariant of $K3$ surfaces with involution. In this paper we completely determine its structure as an automorphic function on the moduli space of such $K3$ surfaces. On every component of the moduli space, it is expressed as the product of an explicit Borcherds lift and a classical Siegel modular form. We also introduce its twisted version. We prove its modularity and a certain uniqueness of the modular form corresponding to the twisted holomorphic torsion invariant. This is used to study an equivariant analogue of Borcherds’ conjecture.
