More attention to newborn health has meant that worldwide the global neonatal mortality rate declined between 1990 and 2018, from 37 deaths per 1000 live births to 18 deaths per 1000 live births (WHO–UNICEF 2020). However, a higher risk of dying in the first days of life persists in adaptation to extrauterine life: neonatal deaths account for 47% of all under-5 mortality, with 2.5 million deaths in 2018; 78% of these occurring in sub-Saharan Africa.
