The length of time that cemeteries were used provides important insights into the persistence of social identities and how communities situate themselves in the landscape. In Bronze Age Europe, the duration of use of cemeteries is an important line of evidence to assess the role of mortuary practices in a time of social change across the continent. This study presents new dates and a Bayesian model of cremation at a Middle Bronze Age (2000–1500 BCE) cemetery in Transylvania (Romania). The cemetery at Limba-Oarda de Jos-Șesul Orzii is the largest known cemetery associated with the Wietenberg culture in Transylvania during the Middle Bronze Age. Unlike Early Bronze Age cemeteries and other Middle Bronze Age cemeteries elsewhere in the Carpathian Basin where burial activity often continued for over 500 years, the duration of use of Limba-Oarda de Jos-Șesul Orzii was much briefer. The cemetery formed within 160 years; we argue closer to 50–100 years. This use life is similar to the nearby Wietenberg cremation cemetery at Sebeș and stands in contrast to mortuary practices in previous time periods and other contemporaneous regions. The short duration of burial activity, and subsequent abandonment of the site, has ramifications for understanding Middle Bronze Age settlement patterns, mortuary rituals, and the dynamics around emerging inequality in Transylvania and beyond.

In this paper we present new AMS radiocarbon dates from the Bronze Age cemetery of Tiszafüred-Majoroshalom excavated between 1961 and 1972. The cemetery provides crucial information on the cultural development and chronology of the Bronze Age Otomani-Füzesabony and the Tumulus cultures of Eastern Central Europe, in addition to the transition between the Middle and Late Bronze Age (approx. 1500 BC) in the Great Hungarian Plain.

In this paper, we examine cases where radiocarbon (14C) dates are incompatible with dates produced by other established archaeological methods. We present results from nine bones that we sampled from tombs in Phoenician sites in Sicily. These bones produced radiocarbon dates conflicting with established dates of finds in the associated tombs. These discrepancies, particularly in tomb dates, pose a serious problem, as they suggest that the finds may be disconnected from the buried individuals, challenging the fundamental premise of studying excavated tombs. To put our findings in a broader context, we also present other cases of discrepancies found in recent publications and note some common observations throughout these studies. Our questions and observations arise from the significant implications that radiocarbon dating has for our research on Phoenician ancient DNA, as these conflicts impact our understanding of the potential migration and movement of Phoenician people throughout the Mediterranean.

This date list reports the unpublished results from a multi-year radiocarbon dating program of the prehistoric Iapodes collection at the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb. Dated materials were excavated from cave, burial, and settlement contexts by various museum teams during the past century.

A reassessment of radiocarbon counting statistics in accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) at the Andre E. Lalonde National Facility revealed that the traditionally assumed Poisson distribution may not always apply. An extensive analysis of 2.5 years of 14C and 12C data was conducted on a MICADAS™ AMS. This study found that only 63% of results adhered to Poisson statistics, while 34.2% showed slight deviations, and 2.8% exhibited strong non-Poisson behavior. This finding challenges the classic assumption that radiocarbon AMS is inherently a Poisson process. This study recommends considering non-Poisson models, specifically quasi-Poisson and negative binomial models, to better account for internal error and improve the accuracy of the reported error. Integrating 12C current noise into error calculations is also suggested as it plays a significant role in measurement variability. We would like to ignite curiosity on other AMS laboratories to test the non-Poisson error framework with the broader aim of assessing its applicability in improving conventional statistical models, error expansion methods, and in ensuring more accurate and reliable 14C results.

This paper presents an improved setup for radiocarbon analysis of water-soluble organic carbon based on wet chemical oxidation as installed at the Laboratory for the Analysis of Radiocarbon with AMS (LARA) at the University of Bern. The implementation of a non-dispersive infrared CO2 detector allows more precise and accurate quantification of carbon amounts in samples and establishes the possibility of simple monitoring of the efficacy of flushing and sampling processes. A detailed blank assessment unveiled undesired oxidation of different materials and sample temperature as critical factors regarding the level of constant contamination. Contamination arising from oxidation of septum pieces and carbon-based glues in conventional sampling needles was minimized by developing a glass-sintered needle. This new needle was also designed to be longer, reducing the minimum amount of sample solution needed to 2 mL. The oxidation time and temperature (1 hr at 75°C) were optimized to further decrease contamination during analyses of samples with carbon amounts of up to ∼50 µg. With these improvements, we now report low constant contamination levels of 0.62 ± 0.12 µg C (with F14C of 0.19 ± 0.04), whereas the cross contamination factor was determined to be 0.25 ± 0.07%.

Sudden annual rises in radiocarbon concentration have proven to be valuable assets for achieving exact-year calibration of radiocarbon measurements. These extremely precise calibrations have usually been obtained through the use of classical χ2 tests in conjunction with a local calibration curve of single-year resolution encompassing a rapid change in radiocarbon levels. As the latest Northern Hemisphere calibration curve, IntCal20, exhibits single-year resolution over the last 5000 years, in this study we investigate the possibility of performing calibration of radiocarbon dates using the classical χ2 test and achieving high-precision dating more extensively, examining scenarios without the aid of such abrupt changes in radiocarbon concentration. In order to perform a broad analysis, we simulated 171 sets of radiocarbon measurements over the last two millennia, with different set lengths and sample spacings, and tested the effectiveness of the χ2 test compared to the most commonly used Bayesian wiggle-matching technique for temporally ordered sequences of samples such as tree-rings sequences, the OxCal D_Sequence. The D_Sequence always produces a date range, albeit in certain cases very narrow; the χ2 test proves to be a viable alternative to Bayesian wiggle-matching, as it achieves calibrations of comparable precision, providing also a highest-likelihood estimate within the uncertainty range.

To investigate the environmental history of the Tisza River (Hungary), we applied 14C and OSL dating methods for five parallel, neighboring cores from the flood plain area (Jászság Basin). Four major sedimentary layers were identified: meadow soil on the top (S1); silty-clay (S2); clayey-silt (S3) section; and fine sand (S4). 14C and OSL data were integrated into a synthetic age-depth model using the BACON software package. Formation of the S1 layer (depth: 0–1.0 m) falls in the Holocene, up to 10 kyrs cal BP, with moderate sedimentation rate (100 yr/cm aAR). The S2 layer (1.0–8.0 m depth) represent the entire Last Glacial to Upper Pleniglacial period (19–27 kyrs cal BP), with a much faster sedimentation (20 yr/cm aAr). The S3 section (8.0–17.0 m) represents a longer period (27–45 kyrs cal BP) with similar sedimentation rate (19 yr/cm aAr) as S2. These clayey silt layers fall into the Late Pleistocene/Middle Pleniglacial period, a period of nearly 18 kyrs of sedimentation resulting ∼9 m thick sediment. Our study delivered some new and important details about the surface evolution of the investigated Tiszasüly area. A missing part of about 10 kyrs period (between 10–19 kyrs cal BP) was revealed in the investigated synthetic cores.

This study from the Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Laboratory at the Center for Physical Sciences and Technology (FTMC), Vilnius, Lithuania, presents a detailed description of the sample preparation methods employed in the laboratory, with a focus on two AMS systems: a single-stage accelerator mass spectrometer (SSAMS) and a low energy accelerator (LEA). A pivotal aspect of this article is our participation in the GIRI intercomparison test, demonstrating our commitment to precision and accuracy in radiocarbon dating, with the average z-score values of the GIRI test being 0.16 ± 1.66 for SSAMS and –0.04 ± 1.52 for LEA. The outcomes from this participation validate the meticulous sample preparation procedures at Vilnius Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Laboratory and offer significant insights into the efficiency and reliability of SSAMS and LEA systems, contributing to a better understanding of their capabilities in radiocarbon analysis.

As the capital of medieval Makuria, Old Dongola, Sudan was one of the largest sites in the region and a center of religious and cultural importance. The annex to the monastery on Kom H at Old Dongola, functioning from the 6/7th through 14/15th c. CE, contains three distinct burial crypts that have been proposed as having been utilized for the burials of social elites, quite likely Makurian Church or monastic officials. Each crypt contains multiple burials, ranging from five (Crypt 3) to seven (Crypts 1 and 2), bringing forth questions of temporality and re-use. Medieval Makurian burials do not typically contain grave goods or personal items, reducing the possibility of establishing temporality through relative dating. In the absence of substantial grave goods allowing for seriation and temporal affiliation of interments, and with only the epitaph of Georgios providing a date of 1113 CE, it has thus far not been possible to differentiate the timeframes of interment for the individuals interred within Crypts 1–3 on Kom H at Old Dongola nor the establishment of these crypts in relation to the monastery. To gain further insight to the periods of use of these crypt burial spaces, 18 human bone collagen samples were submitted for radiocarbon dating at Poznań Radiocarbon Laboratory. The results of radiocarbon dating provide novel insights to the use of Crypts 1–3 at the Kom H monastery, allowing for periodization of this burial environment in relation to the larger adjacent medieval cemetery and Old Dongola community.

Earthworm biospheroids are a useful alternative to radiocarbon (14C) soil dating. In this study, we undertook a series of measurements to test the 14C dating potential/performance of recent earthworm biospheroid granules. A novel sample preparation protocol for 14C in biospheroids was developed and elaborated at Atomki (Institute for Nuclear Research) and tested on IAEA reference materials. 24 natural biospheroid samples were extracted from five different location/environment-eight topsoils (A-horizon soils). Bomb-peak-based, high-resolution 14C dating show very uniform 14C results at 105.6 ± 2.6 pMC (1σ) and none of the biospheroids are older than 30 yr. It also shows that no biospheroid with a 14C bomb-peak as high as that observed in the 1960s and 1990s were observed. The results confirmed that earthworms do indeed consume almost exclusively recent biogenic carbon, not other organic compounds or inorganic carbonates previously bound in the soil. The calendar age of their biospheroids were extremely close to the real (zero) age of the surface. Thus, no “reservoir effect” is seen for these macrofossils. We conclude that a biospheroid-based 14C age determination method may be suitable to measure the burial time as long as earthworm biospheroids can be found in the soil.

We used AMS 14C dating to determine the age of the composite wedge formation in the Batagay Upper Sand unit. The composite wedges are interpreted as syngenetic structures; they have grown vertically upward with aggradation of the host sandy deposits. The formation of composite wedges in Upper Sand commenced no later than 38.3 cal ka BP and stopped not earlier than 25.5 cal ka BP in the northwestern part of the slump. In the formation of ice wedges within the Upper Sand, frost cracks extended to a depth of 5–7 m, surpassing the normal depth of 3–4 m observed in the Upper Ice Complex. The composite ice wedges in the Upper Sand formed at temperatures ranging from –47 to –54°C, as evidenced by the paleotemperature reconstruction of the isotope composition of the Upper Ice Complex’s ice wedges.

This paper presents the results of accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14C) dating performed on archaeological samples (human bone, wood charcoal, and other charred plant macro-remains) from six sites located in the Lesser Poland Upland (southern Poland). We report 41 14C age measurements performed on discoveries made during the contract excavations carried out during the S7 roadway construction from 2016–2022. The resulting ages fall into a long interval, which, in terms of the regional archaeological periodization, lasts from the Late Neolithic to the Late Antiquity/Early Medieval Period (ca. 4600 BC–600 AD), and in terms of the climatological periodization corresponds to the Atlantic, Subboreal, and Subatlantic.

In this article, we report new marine reservoir age correction (ΔR) values from the Marine20 calibration for the Penghu Islands in the Taiwan Strait over the past 6700 cal BP, derived from 14C and U-Th ages of Holocene corals. Since secondary calcite from diagenetic processes can influence coral 14C ages, we developed a pretreatment protocol that ensures low calcite content (<1%, 0.8±0.2%) using a combination of thorough physical cleaning and repeated XRD measurements. We compare our new measurements with published ΔR values from the region, recalculated to conform to the Marine20 dataset. The results show larger temporal variation (∼300 yr) in ΔR from 5500 to 6700 cal BP for the Penghu Islands and ∼400 yr variability at several SCS sites from 5500 to 8200 cal BP. Relatively smaller ΔR variability is observed from 0–5500 cal BP: ∼220 yr in the Penghu Islands and ∼320 yr for South China Sea sites. The weighted mean ΔR value of –155±59 14C yr for the past 5500 cal BP is determined as the marine reservoir age correction around Taiwan and northeastern SCS, and this value is consistent with modern values inherited from the North Equatorial Current, the upstream source of the Kuroshio Current that feeds the northeastern SCS and the Taiwan Strait.
