The following list summarizes the post-1970 laboratory results of 14C dating of ancient sea-level indicators from the coasts of the Soviet Union. One of the aims of the International Geologic Correlation Programme Project No. 61 “Sea level movements during the last deglacial hemicycle” is the global cataloguing and mapping of ancient sea levels. The laboratory, which acts as the USSR National curator for these age measurements obtains dates sampled from its own expeditions and from other institutions of the country.

The Xi-Sha Islands comprise 35 coral reefs, cays, and islets lying to the northwest of the South China Sea. Since Miocene time, > 1200m of bioherms developed on slowly subsiding granite-gneiss bed rock. These sediments provide evidence for sea-level changes and crustal movements in the South China Sea.

The optimum operating conditions providing minimum run-time and running costs have been studied theoretically for a thermal diffusion plant to be used for the enrichment of the radiocarbon isotope from finite sample size.

The calculations are based on a simple approximate model of the enrichment process, regarding the isotope separation column as operating under quasi-stationary state conditions. The temporal variation of the isotope accumulation is given by a single exponential term. From comparison with the numerical solution of the separation tube equation, approximate models of this simple type appear hardly sufficient for analytical work but seem well suited for optimization calculations. For column operation not too close to the equilibrium state, the approximate run-times were found accurate within 0.2 d.

The approximate model has been applied to a column of the concentric type, operated on gaseous methane. Cross-section configuration and temperatures were not varied (hot and cold wall radii: 2.0 and 2.6cm, respectively; hot and cold wall temperatures: 400°C and 14°C, respectively). The column transport coefficients used were derived from measurements. Run-time was minimized by optimizing both the operating pressure and the sample collection mode for different total sample size (range studied: 24 to 100 g), mass of enriched sample (1.8, 2.4, and 3.0 g), enrichment factor (12, 15, and 20) and column length (8 to 18 m). Optimum working pressures are between 1 and 2 atm. Usually, about 90 percent of the enriched sample mass is extracted favorably from the column itself, the length of the sampling section being about 2.5 to 5 m. Typical runtimes are between 3 days and 2 weeks, and isotope yield may reach 90 percent.

Optimum operating conditions have also been calculated for other column configurations reported in literature and are compared with the experimental results.

With the advent of AMS radiocarbon dating of very small samples, a much greater opportunity now exists for research into specialized materials. Investigations of the proteins of bone and teeth for archaeological purposes suggest that much more information might be obtained by appropriate study of individual proteins in these tissues. Although present research seems limited to 14C dating, racemization and dietary selection, conditions of the environment during preservation and some of the physiological events during life are likely to be discernible through further studies.

We converted to CO2 samples of organic materials, Quaternary carbonate rocks and carbonates extracted from groundwater. We measured 14C radioactivity in a proportional counter with an effective volume of 723ml filled to 0.28MPa. A mechanical box with an inside cylinder of a plastic scintillator, 4cm thick, arranged in anticoincidence provides the shielding. We present a review of radiocarbon ages of Quaternary and archaeological samples.

This list includes the measurements carried out from 1977–1978. Procedures of synthesis of benzene, counting method, and performance figures of results were previously described (R, 1982, v 24, p 214–216; CRAD, 1977; Barbina, Calligaris, & Ciuti, 1979). Samples were pretreated according to generally applied methods, depending on type of material and particular archaeologic and geologic features.

Reliable radiocarbon (14C) ages of foraminifera are a prerequisite to generate robust high-resolution age-depth models or to obtain precise understanding of past carbon cycle dynamics. With the advance of small-scale 14C measurements, instrumental precision and levels of contamination (extraneous carbon introduced during sample pretreatment or analysis) became increasingly important to consider. To reduce the effect of carbon contamination, an attempt can be made to remove it by leaching the surface with weak acids. Alternatively, mathematical corrections (e.g., subtraction) based on processing blanks can be applied. We report on 14C analyses of monospecific foraminifera samples compared between different blank corrections (correction against 14C-free CO2, IAEA-C1 and foraminifera) and sample treatments (i) to examine whether chemical pretreatment and mathematical blank subtraction are comparable, and (ii) to determine limitations hindering reliable 14C dating with ever smaller sample sizes. The data show that chemical pretreatment of foraminifera corrected against IAEA-C1 does remove surface contamination and that the same effect can be achieved for untreated samples that were mathematically corrected for blank values determined from sample size-matched 14C-free foraminifera. Leaching only has a beneficial effect on 14C data for older samples, where the isotopic difference between untreated and chemically pretreated samples exceeds the analytical precision.

This paper includes determinations of archaeological samples coming from different sites and performed at the ENEA Radiocarbon Laboratory.

Radiocarbon activity of successive parts of Pleistocene and Holocene ooids and mollusk shells from the Persian Gulf, Kuwait, was measured. The inner part of the ooids showed the lowest activity and the cement between grains the highest. Radiocarbon activities correspond to the general stratigraphy and to the position of the sediments. Radiocarbon ages of Pleistocene sediments seem to be very low due to recrystallization of aragonite. Higher radiocarbon activity of cement indicates that atmospheric carbon dioxide was involved in the subaerial diagenetic process. The radiocarbon age of well-preserved mollusk shells seems to be lower than their allegedly Pleistocene geologic age.

Manen et al. provide here a reply to the critical comment published by A. J. Ammerman regarding their article “The Neolithic Transition in the Western Mediterranean: a complex and non-linear diffusion process—the radiocarbon record revisited,” published in 2019 in Radiocarbon. They also use this occasion to reaffirm the need to elaborate novel interpretive frameworks that combine both geo-chronological and cultural data.

A radiocarbon facility has been installed at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) to support interdisciplinary studies including archaeologic, archaeometric, geophysical, and geologic research. The laboratory was built between 1970 and 1973. Initially, a sample pretreatment and combustion system designed for a proportional CO2 counting system was installed. It was designed after concepts developed at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and New Zealand (Institute of Nuclear Sciences) Laboratories, and began processing samples in November 1972.

The quantification of fossil-fuel derived carbon dioxide (CO2ff) emissions is critical for regional carbon budgets. Radiocarbon (14C) is an effective tool to estimate the contribution of CO2ff to the total atmospheric CO2. In the present study, we have determined the spatial distribution of fossil fuel derived CO2 across Delhi using 14C measurements in Peepal tree leaves from April 2016 to March 2017 at city scale. Our analysis results show that the Δ14C values vary between –67.78‰ to 5.61‰ and corresponding CO2ff values are varying from 1.63 ppm to 33.34 ppm. CO2ff values from campus sites vary between 6.99 ppm to 16.38 ppm with an average value of 10.22 ± 3.20 ppm, while CO2ff values vary from 2.41 ppm to 33.34 ppm with an average value of 13.32 ± 9.40 ppm for sites located in the parks. Further, we observed the higher contributions of fossil fuels in the CO2 from northwest Delhi, central Delhi, and some parts of east and southwest Delhi. In the absence of real-time CO2 monitoring, the results of this study provide a potential method for analyzing the contribution of CO2ff values over the urban landscape to total CO2 over the study region.

Grant Kocharov was a man whose life mirrored all the complexity and controversy of the fate of Russia in the second part of the 20th century. Kocharov was a bright, colorful, and ambitious person. He was born in Georgia, and his childhood and youth were not sunny and cloudless. His father died early and it was very difficult for his mother to feed their large family.

Accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14C) dating was used for determining the age of wedge ice. It has been found that between 11,270 and 6420 cal BP, or the Greenlandian and Northgrippian stages of the Holocene, ice wedges grew syngenetically in sandy deposits with gravel in the Chara River valley. The variations of δ18O values in the ice wedges are about 8‰, from –25.5‰ to –18.8‰. Based on the stable isotope composition of ice wedges, paleotemperature reconstructions revealed that the mean January temperature was as low as –38°C during the coldest periods of the early half of the Holocene and as high as –28°C during the warmer periods.

We present an overview of the beginning and early years of radiocarbon dating in Russia. Achievements of several major scholars in this field from Leningrad (St. Petersburg), Moscow and Novosibirsk are briefly described. The existing and closed Russian laboratories are also mentioned.
