We present HST observations of the interstellar medium toward the star β CMa known to be located in a low density extension of the Local Bubble. Most of the matter in the sight-line is ionized and clumped in two main components. One of them, as well as one of the components detected toward ϵ CMa, is mostly ionized and only slightly depleted. Their ionization ratios are compatible with collisional ionization at T~25 000 K. These clouds could have been ionized by shocks related to the Local Bubble creation and also responsible of some dust grain sputtering.

We have completed a direct narrow-band/broad-band Schmidt-plate survey of large areas of the southern Milky Way for new Wolf-Rayet stars as faint as 19th b magnitude. The 31 newly detected stars in the completed survey are amongst the reddest and/or most distant known in the Galaxy. We have obtained spectra of all candidate WR stars in the 22 fields stretching from l = 282° to l = 341° in longitude, and Δb = 3.5° in latitude, covering about 180 square degrees. We also observed two isolated Milky Way fields centered at l = 0° and l = 8°. Eighteen new WR stars are reported here for the first time. Combined with the 13 new WR stars we have already reported in Carina, our list of 31 new Galactic WR stars reaches 3–4 magnitudes fainter than previous surveys. Thirteen of the 18 new WR stars reported here are of subtype WN, while five are of subtype WC. Our new WR stars clearly demonstrate an increasing WN/WC number ratio with increasing Galactocentric distance.

While trying to determine the rotation curve in 1953 Kwee, Muller, and Westerhout [1] found long and faint wings in the line profiles within 20 to 25 degrees longitude from the center. The gas responsible for these wings should therefore lie within 3 kiloparsecs from the center. The velocities of the neutral hydrogen causing these wings are far greater than could be expected on the basis of a reasonable rotational model of the Galaxy. Therefore, the wings were tentatively interpreted as being caused by high turbulent velocities in the gas. In view of the new and better data obtained with the 25-meter telescope in Dwingeloo, this interpretation has now been dropped. The new conclusion is that all of the neutral hydrogen in these regions is expanding and at the same time taking part in the galactic rotation. The evidence for this conclusion will be briefly presented.

The Mariner 5 ultraviolet measurements obtained while the spacecraft was in interplanetary flight are interpreted as Lyman-α radiation. This radiation may arise from (1) the scattering of solar Lyman-α radiation by interplanetary atomic hydrogen, (2) the scattering of solar Lyman-α by atomic hydrogen that is present at the edge of the solar system, or (3) diffusely scattered Lyman-α radiation from the Galaxy. The Mariner 5 measurements show a symmetry with respect to the galactic equator which suggests that the major source of the observed emission is the diffuse galactic radiation. In the Münch model for the diffuse Lyman-α radiation from an HI region, the sources of the Lyman-α photons are stellar chromospheres, the photons are scattered a large number of times by interstellar atomic hydrogen, and are absorbed by interstellar dust. Some of the Mariner 5 measurements may be attributed to Lyman-α emission from an HII region since the field of observation scanned the edge of the Gum nebula.

We numerically investigate the interaction between a nanosatllite CubeSat and surrounding plasma. The present study aims to elucidate particular issues related to nanosatllite-plasma interaction which affects the on-board instruments by using particle-in-cell simulations. The numerical results of the present study demonstrate the importance of several key physical processes in nanosatellites-plasma interaction. In particular, it is shown that plasma flow, ion composition, and the geomagnetic field have a strong impact on the Langmuir probes.

Large scale (19 arc sec/mm), deeply exposed photographs (26.5 mag/sq arc sec) of a sample of 12 QSO's over the redshift range, z = 0.158 to 0.528 have been obtained. Baked IIIa-F plates were used at the prime focus of the ESO 3.6-m telescope. The band pass was 5700–6900A. Logarithmic intensity contour maps and logarithmic image profiles were constructed from PDS microdensitometer scans. Seven of the 12 QSO's show extended (5–10 arc sec), asymmetric structure on the contour maps; while 9 of 12 QSO's show broader image profiles than stars of the same magnitude. The intensity contour maps provide two essential bits of information for follow-up spectroscopy: 1) a guide for locating the slit aperture and 2) a means of estimating integration times.

Photography of the second epoch of the Lick Proper Motion Program (Wright 1950) was started in 1968. The original plan (Vasilevskis 1954) was modified in several respects. It was decided to carry out a pilot program first, before the start of a full coverage of the sky accessible from Lick. It was also decided to make use of the new lens corrected for yellow light (Vasilevskis 1964), in addition to the blue lens used for the first epoch. The aims of the pilot program were formulated: (1) carry out the necessary error investigations, (2) develop methods and procedures to a stage of routine, (3) derive proper motions of stars measured, and (4) attempt to arrive at some astronomical conclusions based on these motions. The program was limited to 97 fields nearly uniformly distributed over the sky north of -23° all these fields were photographed, measured and reduced, 78 of them contain a sufficient number of galaxies for proper motion reference. This report will be limited to presenting a few results obtained from the first crude analysis of proper motions that became available only a week ago. These results, therefore may change significantly in the process of further analysis.

A method for testing the possible correlation between axial rotations of pairs of stars is developed. The test is applied to a sample of visual binaries. It is concluded that some kind of coupling between the spins of components of visual binaries does in fact exist.

We present the results of X-ray and millimetre monitoring of the blazar 3C273 at 1–2 day intervals over the period 12 December 1992 to 24 January 1993. No large flares are seen in this period but variations in both wavebands of ∼ 30% on few day timescales are apparent. The ROSAT PSPC X-ray spectrum consists of 2 power-law components with the harder component dominating above 0.5 keV. There is very little correlation between the variability of the soft and hard components. The soft component does not correlate with the millimetre variations, but the hard component correlates reasonably well and leads the millimetre variations by about 10 days. These results show that the hard X-ray component cannot be a simple extrapolation of the millimetre/IR synchrotron component but may be explained as a self-Compton component in a shocked jet.

Results of a three-year investigation into the variability of 55 Parkes sources at 13 cm are presented. Thirty-six of the sources comprise a complete sample of QSS with fluxes exceeding 2 flux units. The remaining sources include most other known or likely variables stronger than 2 flux units. The relationship between spectra and variability in QSS is investigated and it is confirmed that variables generally have flat low frequency spectra. A possible relationship between redshift and specific types of intensity variations is considered. Limits on the secular change in the intensity of non-variable QSS are set and are generally found to be ± 1.5% p.a. at 13 cm. Results for the remaining 19 sources are discussed and some preliminary findings of an extension patrol to include weaker sources in the range 1-2 flux units are given.

Crystalline silicate dust particles have been found in some comets, though progenitors of those dust particles are thought to be amorphous. Here, the origin of the crystalline particles was investigated based on the shock-wave heating mechanism. We find that appropriate shock waves can crystallize amorphous dust particles and conditions of these shock waves (shock velocity and pre-shock gas density) are clarified.

The gas density in the solar nebula and the shock velocity that may be induced in comet forming regions by some mechanisms were discussed. It was suggested that comets formed in a region closer than about 20 AU to the Sun can contain the crystalline particles, whereas comets formed in a further region can hardly have them.

In view of the spectral similarity and the probable evolutionary relation between certain planetary nebulae (PN) and other objects that are generally binaries (symbiotic stars, Be stars, or slow novae), it is probable that many nuclei of PN are double.

Mars lacks a global dynamo magnetic field to shield it from the solar wind and solar storms, so may be especially sensitive to changing space weather compared to Earth. Inputs from the Sun and solar wind have been measured continuously at Mars for 20 years, and intermittently for more than 50 years. Observations of the influence of the variable space weather at Mars include compression and reconfiguration of the magnetosphere in response to solar storms, increased likelihood of aurora and increased auroral electron energies, increased particle precipitation and ionospheric densities during flare and energetic particle events, and increased ion escape during coronal mass ejection events. Continuing measurements at Mars provide a useful vantage point for studying space weather propagation into the heliosphere, and are providing insight into the evolution of the Martian atmosphere and the role that planetary magnetic fields play in helping planets to retain habitable conditions near their surface.

Using the circumstellar envelope parameters (mean temperature, extent and opacity) derived by fitting theoretical energy distributions to those observed in a sample of 20 Be stars, we estimate the respective magnitude difference ΔV = V – V* of the continuum flux excess produced by their circumstellar envelopes. Using then the HIPPARCOS parallaxes of these stars and the ISM E(B-V) colour excesses derived with the surrounding normal B stars, we estimate the visual absolute magnitude of the central objects in the program Be stars. In most cases the results obtained are in good agreement with the absolute magnitudes obtained from the photospheric (λ1, D) components derived in the BCD spectrophotometric system. There are, however, strong discrepancies in 4 program stars which deserve further studies. The magnitude excess seems to be ΔV ≲ 0 for the higher effective temperatures only. There is no correlation between ΔV and Vsin i, as would be expected if the circumstellar envelopes were strongly flattened.

We report the Suzaku follow-up observations of the Gamma-ray pulsars, 1FGL J0614,13328, J1044.55737, J1741.82101, and J1813.31246, which were discovered by the Fermi Gamma-ray observatory. Analysing Suzaku/XIS data, we detected X-ray counterparts of these pulsars in the Fermi error circle and interpreted their spectra with absorbed power-law functions. These results indicate that the origin of these X-ray sources is non-thermal emission from the pulsars or from Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWNe) surrounding them. Moreover we found that J1741.82101 exhibits a peculiar profile: spin-down luminosity vs flux ratio between X- and gamma-rays is unusually large compared to usual radio pulsars.

High contrast imaging observations with the Hubble Space Telescope show that the nearby star Fomalhaut is surrounded by a dusty debris belt and a candidate planet, Fomalhaut b, located just inside the edge of the belt. Fomalhaut b has unexpected characteristics, such as a relatively blue spectrum, leading to the hypothesis that the detected object is a low-mass planet hosting a giant planetary dust ring or cloud seen in reflected light. Here we present new HST/STIS observations made in 2010 and 2012 that authenticate the existence of Fomalhaut b. Our MCMC analysis of four epochs of astrometry spread over eight years indicate that the orbit has a~170 AU and e~0.85. Fomalhaut b's orbit is apsidally aligned with the main belt, and periapse is located approximately ~30 AU south of the star. We also show the existence of a ~50 AU wide azimuthal dust depletion in the dust belt. These new findings provide a revised picture of Fomalhaut as a dynamically complex system, where the orbit of Fomalhaut b and the belt structure signify the presence of additional massive planets orbiting the star.

Window functions describe, as a function of orbital period, the probability that an existing planetary transit is detectable in one's data for a given observing strategy. We show the dependence of this probability upon several strategy and astrophysical parameters, such as length of observing run, observing cadence, length of night, and transit duration. The ability to detect a transit is directly related to the intrinsic noise of the observations. In our simulations of the window function, we explicitly address non-correlated (white) noise and correlated (red) noise and discuss how these two different noise components affect window functions in different manners.

We present preliminary results of an analysis of X-ray and optical data of the asynchronous AM Her star BY Cam [1]. We use X-ray data from EXOSAT (0.1… 50 keV), Ginga (1.5… 50 keV) and ROSAT (0.1…2.0 keV) and optical data obtained during a 45-day campaign in 1994.

There are 4 known periods: the orbital period (201.30 m), the spin period of the white dwarf (199.3303 m), a spin-orbit beat period (14.15 d) and a side-band period (197.4 m). The detection of this side-band period lends credence to the theory of [2], who suggest that for a stream accreting, diskless, magnetic CV a frequency, f = 2ωspin − Ωorb (=197.399 m), will appear as a strong spike in the power spectrum for certain systems. Wu & Mason (this volume) discuss a competing model where Pspin = 197.4 m.

We present the first results of a series of Monte-Carlo simulations investigating the imprints of a central black hole on the core structure of globular clusters. We investigate the three-dimensional and the projected density profile of the inner regions of idealized as well as more realistic globular cluster models, taking into account a stellar mass spectrum, stellar evolution and allowing for a larger, more realistic, number of stars than was previously possible with direct N-body methods. We compare our results to other N-body simulations published previously in the literature.
