Two compounds with the chemical composition Ca2.32Mn0.68Si2.00O7 were synthesized from a molten carbonating silicate with the melilite composition. The synthetic samples were subsequently characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, IR absorption and EPMA, and they proved to be the anhydrous phases isomorphous with kilchoanite Ca3Si2O7 and åkermanite Ca2MgSi2O7 respectively, and to be polymorphous with each other. Their crystallochemical properties suggest that Mn-åkermanite is a high-temperature structure type of Mn-kilchoanite. Substitution of Mn2+ with an intermediate ionic radius between those of Mg2+ and Ca2+ cations establishes the polymorphic relationship between åkermanite Ca2MgSi2O7 and kilchoanite Ca3Si2O7.

A phosphate-rich carbonate nodule from carboniferous mudstones has been studied by wet chemistry, X-ray diffraction, and electron microprobe. Partial heavy-liquid separation has enabled characterization of the phosphate phase as francolite (carbonate fluorapatite) with a composition Ca10(PO4)5·59(CO3)1·00((OH)1·49F2·10). Diffractometer data for this mineral is presented and cell dimensions are calculated as a = 9·349 Å, c = 6·887 Å. with c/a = 0·737. The problem of the structural positioning of carbon in francolite is discussed.

The francolite is seen in thin section as a structureless groundmass enclosing siderite spheru-lites. Electron microprobe X-ray distribution photographs for P, Al, Si, Mg, and Fe show the relationship of these two phases to quartz, pyrite, and at least two clay minerals. One of the latter is intimately mixed with francolite.

Possible origins of phosphatic nodules are discussed. Textural evidence in the present case strongly suggests that the francolite is concretionary and formed during early diagenesis possibly by replacement of earlier calcite. Phosphate was probably derived from protein degradation, which also maintained the alkaline pH necessary for francolite formation.

Minium occurs at Broken Hill, New South Wales, as pseudomorphs after cerussite, formed during fires in the mine. It is tetragonal with a = 8·824 Å. and c = 6·564 Å.; sp. gr. 8·2 + 0·2. The Broken Hill minium appears identical in physical properties with synthetic Pb3O4 described by other workers.

The new mineral mazorite, ideally Ba3(PO4)2, a P-analogue of gurimite Ba3(VO4)2, was discovered in rankinite paralava hosted by the massive gehlenite-bearing pyrometamorphic rocks of the Hatrurim Complex in Israel. It has also recently been discovered in xenolith samples from the Bellerberg volcano in Germany. Holotype mazorite usually forms colourless plate-like crystals up to 70–100 μm in length but also occurs in small aggregates in association with other rare Ba-bearing minerals such as zadovite, celsian, hexacelsian, bennesherite, sanbornite, walstromite, fresnoite, gurimite, alforsite and barioferrite. The mineral is transparent, exhibits vitreous lustre and has a good cleavage on (001). Optically, mazorite is uniaxial (+), with ω = 1.760(3) and ɛ = 1.766(3) (λ = 589 nm). The empirical formula of the holotype mazorite calculated on 8O is (Ba2.69K0.22Na0.04Ca0.02Sr0.01)Σ2.98(P1.16V0.57S0.24Al0.04Si0.03)Σ2.04O8. Mazorite crystallises in space group R$\bar{3}$m, with unit-cell parameters a = 5.6617(5) Å, c = 21.1696(17) Å, V = 587.68(9) Å3 and Z = 3. Its crystal structure consists of BaO12, BaO10, and PO4 polyhedra, ordered along the c-axis in PO4–BaO10–BaO12–BaO10–PO4 columnar arrangement characteristic for palmierite-supergroup minerals. A tetrahedrally coordinated site is generally occupied by P5+ but can be partially substituted by V5+ and S6+. This substitution is shown in the Raman spectrum of mazorite, which reveals bands that can be assigned to the stretching and bending vibrations of (PO4)3–, (VO4)3– and (SO4)2– groups. The Raman spectra of mazorite from two localities (Hatrurim and Bellerberg) and spectra of minerals belonging to the mazorite Ba3(PO4)2 to gurimite Ba3(VO4)2 solid-solution series are presented. The gradual shift of the Raman bands, caused by cation substitutions, is well observed. The high V5+ → P5+ substitution is also observed for gurimite, for which the first X-ray structural data are also presented. Mazorite and other Ba-bearing minerals crystallised from a small portion of residual melt enriched in incompatible elements, such as Ba, V, P, U, S, Ti and Nb, at a temperature of ~1000°C.

Southwestern Sardinia, Italy, hosts several skarn, W–Sn–Mo greisen and hydrothermal deposits related to a 289±1 Ma Late Variscan granite suite. Among them, the most representative scheelite-bearing skarns belong to the San Pietro and Sinibidraxiu localities, in the Monte Tamara area, Sulcis region. The San Pietro deposit is a typical calc-silicate skarn whereas Sinibidraxiu is a sharply bounded orebody hosted in a marble unit. Optical petrographic observations and compositional data of major and trace elements were obtained for samples from both localities. San Pietro data suggests evolution from an oxidising prograde skarn stage (andradite–diopside, hematite and scheelite), to progressively more reducing conditions from the early retrograde (magnetite–cassiterite) to the late sulfide stage (arsenopyrite, stannite, molybdenite, Bi sulfosalts and Zn–Cu–Pb–Fe sulfides); Sinibidraxiu has diffuse carbonate–quartz intergrowths pseudomorphic over an early mineral assemblage with fibrous habit, followed by abundant ore mineral precipitation under reducing conditions (scheelite, arsenopyrite and Pb–Zn–Cu–Fe sulfides). Geothermometers indicate a comprehensive temperature range of 460–270°C for the sulfide stages of both deposits. The differences between the two deposits might be controlled by the distance from the source intrusion coupled with the different reactivity of the host rocks. The San Pietro mineralogy represents a more proximal skarn, contrasting with more distal mineralogical and chemical features characterising the Sinibidraxiu orebody (lack of Mo–Sn–Bi phases; LREE–MREE–HREE signature of scheelite). This investigation contributes for the first time to the identification of a W–Sn skarn system in SW Sardinia, thereby suggesting the Monte Tamara area and its surroundings as favourable for further exploration.

The new mineral chinleite-(Y) (IMA2016-017), NaY(SO4)2·H2O, was found in the Blue Lizard mine, San Juan County, Utah, USA, where it occurs as a secondary alteration phase. Chinleite-(Y) crystals are thin hexagonal {100} prisms (up to 0.3 mm long) with pyramidal terminations consisting of the forms {101} and {011}. Prisms are typically intergrown in divergent sprays, bow-tie aggregates or subparallel intergrowths. Crystals are colourless and transparent with a vitreous lustre. The streak is white and the mineral is nonfluorescent. The Mohs hardness is between 2½ and 3. Crystals are brittle with at least one good cleavage parallel to [001], probably {100}, and have splintery fracture. The mineral is slowly soluble in H2O at room temperature. The calculated density is 3.385 g cm–3. The mineralis optically uniaxial (+), with ω = 1.565(1) and ε = 1.603(1) (white light). Electron microprobe analyses yielded the empirical formula (Na0.507Ca0.285Y0.176)∑0.968(Y0.724Dy0.110Er0.053Gd0.037Ho0.021Yb0.013Nd0.014Eu0.005Sm0.008Ce0.010Pr0.003La0.002)∑1.000(SO4)2·H1.401O.The eight strongest powder X-ray diffraction lines are [dobs Å(I)(hkl)]: 6.01(59)(100), 5.43(63)(011), 3.457(46)(110), 3.010(100)(200), 2.826(95)(014), 2.1365(39)(006,122), 1.8493(67)(214) and 1.6901(28)(125,034). Chinleite-(Y) is trigonal, P3221,a = 6.890(2), c = 12.767(2) Å, V = 524.9(3) Å3 and Z = 3. The structure of chinleite-(Y) (R1 = 0.0444 for 303 Fo > 4σF), a three-dimensional framework, consisting of SO4 groups, irregular NaO8 polyhedra and YO9 distorted tricapped trigonal prisms, is similar to the structure of bassanite.

The new eudialyte-group mineral selsurtite, ideally (H3O)12Na3(Ca3Mn3)(Na2Fe)Zr3□Si[Si24O69(OH)3](OH)Cl⋅H2O, was discovered in metasomatic peralkaline rock from the Flora mountain, northern spur of the Selsurt mountain, Lovozero alkaline massif, Kola Peninsula, Russia. The associated minerals are aegirine, albite and orthoclase, as well as accessory lorenzenite, calciomurmanite, natrolite, lamprophyllite and sergevanite. Selsurtite occurs as brownish-red to reddish-orange, equant or flattened on (0001) crystals up to 2 mm across and elongate crystals up to 3 cm long. The main crystal forms are {0001}, {11$\bar{2}$0}, and {10$\bar{1}$1}. Selsurtite is brittle, with the Mohs’ hardness of 5. No cleavage is observed. Parting is distinct on (001). D(meas) = 2.73(2) and D(calc) = 2.722 g⋅cm–3. Selsurtite is optically uniaxial (–), with ω = 1.598(2) and ɛ = 1.595(2). The chemical composition is (wt.%, electron microprobe): Na2O 6.48, K2O 0.27, MgO 0.10, CaO 6.83, MnO 4.73, FeO 1.18, SrO 1.88, La2O3 0.57, Ce2O3 1.07, Pr2O3 0.20, Nd2O3 0.44, Al2O3 0.29, SiO2 50.81, ZrO2 13.50, HfO2 0.45, TiO2 0.61, Nb2О5 1.10, Cl 1.01, SO3 0.29, H2O 8.10, –O≡Cl –0.23, total 99.68. The empirical formula is H25.94Na6.03K0.16Mg0.07Ca3.51Sr0.52Ce0.19La0.10Nd0.08Pr0.03Mn1.91Fe0.47Ti0.22Zr3.16Hf0.06Nb0.24Si24.40Al0.16S0.10Cl0.82O79.13. The crystal structure was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and refined to R = 0.0484. Selsurtite is trigonal, space group R3, with a = 14.1475(7) Å, c = 30.3609(12) Å, V = 5262.65(7) Å3 and Z = 3. Infrared and Raman spectra show that hydronium cations are involved in very strong hydrogen bonds and form Zundel- and Eigen-like complexes. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d, Å (I, %)(hkl)] are: 11.38 (56)(101), 7.08 (59)(110), 5.69 (36)(202), 4.318 (72)(205), 3.793 (36)(303), 3.544 (72)(027, 220, 009), 2.970 (100)(315) and 2.844 (100)(404). The mineral is named after the discovery locality.

The Mount Mather Creek sodalite-bearing carbohydrothermal breccia dyke is located ~35 km northwest of Golden, British Columbia, Canada, within the Foreland Belt on the eastern side of the Mississippian-to-Devonian British Columbia Alkaline Province. The dyke occurs in situ on the western side of the Mount Mather Creek gully, cropping out over a distance of ~80 m with a thickness of up to 10 m, intruding a syncline of Middle and Upper Cambrian Chancellor Group carbonate rocks. To date, no parental alkaline complex has been found adjacent or proximal to the dyke. The breccia dyke is flow-banded and matrix-supported and consists of host rock clasts, medium- to coarse-grained, anhedral-to-poikilitic carbonate-rich syenite segregations that occur as veins and pods, and fine-grained banded sodalite plus carbonate fragments in a carbonate-rich matrix. The sodalite-carbonate segregations consist dominantly of sodalite, ferroan dolomite, calcite and microcline, with an extensive suite of trace minerals enriched in rare earth elements (REE), Na, Ba and Sr, including albite, analcime, ancylite-(Ce), chabazite-Na, fluorapatite, baryte, barytocalcite, cancrinite, galena, goethite, gonnardite, harmotome, edingtonite, a potentially new Mg-bearing edingtonite-like mineral, natrolite, nordstrandite, pyrite, quintinite and sphalerite. Alteration of the primary silicate–carbonate assemblage has resulted in a secondary assemblage of hydrothermal or carbohydrothermal REE–Ba–Sr–Na phases including albite, analcime, cancrinite, gonnardite and nordstrandite after sodalite, together with complex intergrowths of ancylite-(Ce), barytocalcite, edingtonite, and a potentially-new Mg-bearing edingtonite-like mineral. Remobilisation of Ba and Sr from barytocalcite resulted in crystallisation of late-stage baryte and Sr-rich calcite. Mount Mather Creek is only the fifth Canadian occurrence of the Ba-zeolite, edingtonite, and the second Canadian occurrence of the rare layered double hydroxide quintinite. The Mount Mather Creek breccia is a carbohydrothermal deposit, the product of a low temperature (<450°C), highly evolved, alkaline, SiO2-undersaturated, Na–Ba–REE–Cl-rich, residual carbonated silicate melt whose parental origins remain unknown.

The use of underground geological repositories, such as in radioactive waste disposal (RWD) and in carbon capture (widely known as Carbon Capture and Storage; CCS), constitutes a key environmental priority for the 21st century. Based on the identification of key scientific questions relating to the geophysics, geochemistry and geobiology of geodisposal of wastes, this paper describes the possibility of technology transfer from high-technology areas of the space exploration sector, including astrobiology, planetary sciences, astronomy, and also particle and nuclear physics, into geodisposal. Synergies exist between high technology used in the space sector and in the characterization of underground environments such as repositories, because of common objectives with respect to instrument miniaturization, low power requirements, durability under extreme conditions (in temperature and mechanical loads) and operation in remote or otherwise difficult to access environments.

Oldsite (IMA2021-075), ideally K2Fe2+[(UO2)(SO4)2]2(H2O)8, is a new uranyl sulfate mineral found on specimens from the North Mesa Mine group, Temple Mountain, San Rafael district, Emery County, Utah, USA. It is a secondary mineral occurring with alum-(K), halotrichite, metavoltine, quartz, römerite, stanleyite, sulphur, szomolnokite and mathesiusite. It forms rectangular blades flattened on {010} and elongated on [001], reaching ~0.3 mm in length. Crystals are yellow in colour, transparent with a vitreous lustre; the streak is very pale yellow. The mineral is non-fluorescent. Cleavage is excellent on {100} and perfect on {010}; the Mohs hardness is ~2. Crystals are brittle with irregular, splintery fracture. The density measured by flotation in a mixture of methylene iodide and toluene is 3.31 g⋅cm–3; the calculated density is 3.298 g⋅cm–3 for the empirical formula and 3.330 g⋅cm–3 for the ideal formula. Oldsite is biaxial (+), with α = 1.552(2), β = 1.556(2) and γ = 1.588(2) (measured in white light). The 2V measured directly on a spindle stage is 37(1)°; the calculated 2V is 39.6°. Dispersion is r < v, moderate. The optical orientation is X = b, Y = a and Z = c. The mineral is non-pleochroic. The empirical formula of oldsite (on the basis of 28 O apfu) is K1.93(Fe2+0.53Zn0.31V3+0.09Mg0.08)Σ1.02[(U0.98O2)(S1.01O4)2]2(H2O)8. The Raman spectrum is dominated by the vibrations of SO42– and UO22+ units. Oldsite is orthorhombic, Pmn21, a = 12.893(3), b = 8.276(2), c = 11.239(2) Å, V = 1199.2(5) Å3 and Z = 2. The five strongest powder X-ray diffraction lines are [dobs, Å (I, %) (hkl) ]: 8.29 (59) (010), 6.47 (82) (200), 5.10 (62) (210), 4.65 (100) (012, 211) and 3.332 (55) (022, 221). The crystal structure of oldsite was refined from single-crystal X-ray data to R = 0.0258 for 2676 independent observed reflections, with Iobs > 3σ(I). Oldsite is an Fe2+ analogue of svornostite; its crystal structure is based upon infinite chains of uranyl-sulfate polyhedra, which comprises pentagonal UO7 bipyramids sharing four of their equatorial vertices with sulfate tetrahedra such that each tetrahedron is linked to two uranyl bipyramids to form an infinite chain (the free, non-linking equatorial vertex of the uranyl bipyramid is an H2O group). The broader discussion on the origin and composition of uranyl sulfate minerals is made. The new mineral name honours American mineralogist, Dr. Travis A. Olds for his contribution to uranium mineralogy.

In the course of some researches on the relation between the chemical constitution and the crystalline form of substances, I found it necessary to attempt an accurate determination of the densities of crystals.

Messrs. Playfair and Joule, in 1843, in the course of similar researches, determined the specific gravities of numerous salts by the use of an instrument which showed the actual volume of the solid investigated. This method was found to be subject to many errors, and they abandoned it for one which is the prototype of that ordinarily used in accurate work at present.

A new universal stage extinction technique is presented. It is based on the special case of coplanar and conical extinction curves where an optic axis lies on the wave-normal locus. It may be used in favourable circumstances to determine 2V when neither optic axis is directly observable.

The crystal structure of the organic mineral refikite has been determined. The mineral was found in joints in bark and wood from pine trees in the 'V Borkách' peat deposit near the town of Krásno, Slavkovský les Mountains, western Bohemia, Czech Republic. It forms white to light-yellow polycrystalline crusts or randomly intergrown, transparent, colourless, very thin, acicular crystals up to 0.2–0.5 mm long. Sometimes, colourless-to-white elongated prismatic crystals up to 1–1.5 mm in size were encountered. The mineral is soft (Mohs hardness ∼1) and very brittle, with an uneven fracture. No visible cleavage was discerned. Crystals have a greasy-to-glassy lustre; fine crystal aggregates have a pearly lustre. Refikite, empirical formula C20H34O2 or C19H33COOH, is a derivative of abietic acid. It is orthorhombic, space group P21212, with a = 22.6520(7), b = 10.3328(3), c = 7.6711(2) Å, V = 1795.49(9) Å3, Z = 4. Refikite comprises two closely related compounds based on perhydrophenanthrene. The major component has two axial methyl groups, one terminal carboxylic group and one terminal propan-2-yl (isopropyl) group joined to the three fused rings in the same fashion as in abietic acid. However, the fused ring system is fully reduced (contains single bonds only). In the minor component, the terminal propan-2-yl group is replaced by a propen-2-yl (methylvinyl) group. The crystal structure is stabilized by strong O···H–O hydrogen bonds. High-resolution mass spectroscopy (HRMS) confirmed a molecular mass of 306 and the formula C20H34O2. Hydrogen-1 and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy showed the presence of four methyl groups in the major component; infrared (IR), Raman and NMR spectra are consistent with the structure. The HRMS, IR and Raman spectroscopy methods confirmed the presence of a minor component containing the propen-2-yl group replacing the propan-2-yl group. This is also reflected in a shortened C15–C17 single bond metric of 1.468(6) Å shown by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The trivial name of the major component of refikite is tetrahydroabietic acid or abietan-18-oic acid. This work represents the first proof of the existence of abietic acid derivatives as naturally occurring species.

Natural nickel-iron alloys have been found in several places on the earth's surface. In addition to alloys containing a low percentage of nickel (about 3%), there are others which contain much higher percentages of nickel (about 70%). To alloys of the latter group the name awaruite is now generally given and it may include josephinite, souesite, and other alloys possessing high nickel content so long as they belong to the same phase and possess identical crystal-structures.

It is of interest to the mineralogist to know whether these alloys conform to the structure of nickel-iron alloys prepared in the laboratory and whether they fit into the accepted phase diagram of the nickel-iron system. It is of interest also to the physicist and the metallurgist to obtain information concerning these natural alloys, because some nickel-iron alloys made in the laboratory are difficult to prepare in a state of true equilibrium. Data derived from the study of the natural alloys may help to throw light upon the structure of these artificial alloys.

Munirite was found in the sandstones of Siwaliks formation of mid-Miocene to Pleistocene age. It occurs as small globular clusters of acicular crystals (2 to 3 mm long). Analysis gave V2O5 67.46, N2O 22.91, and H2O 10.26%. The X-ray powder diffraction pattern shows remarkable similarity to a synthetic compound NaVO3 · 1.9H2O (Lukacs and Strausievici, 1962).

Most of 325 K-feldspars from the Hida metamorphic belt are characterized by diffuse 131 and 11 reflections. These K-feldspars are classified into eight obliquity types on the basis of the width of the 131 peak or the ratio of mean height of two outer peaks (131 and 11) to that of the middle composite peak. From the distribution of obliquity types and the microscopic characteristics of K-feldspars, this area is divisible into six zones.

The feature of each zone is shown by the frequency distribution of eight obliquity types in each zone, which reflects the strength of later retrogressive effects. The frequency distribution of Δ values in each of the types IV-VIII provides further information on later events.

The result of the K-feldspar study possibly indicates that the inversion of monoclinic to triclinic K-feldspar, characterized by the development of perthitic texture or crosshatched twinning, is sensitive to the degree of later retrogressive events. Some data on 2θ values of 04, 060 and 01 reflections in each types are presented.
