A unique hybrid natrocarbonatite, collected from the new ash cone of the volcano Oldoinyo Lengai. Tanzania in July 2008, consists of phenocrysts of nyerereite and gregoryite together with xenocrysts of clinopyroxene, nepheline and Ti-andradite set in a groundmass of cuspidine, sodalite, ferroan manganoan monticellite, K-Fe sulphide and manganoan titanian magnetite and gregoryite. The xenocrysts were not in equilibrium with the melt which formed their current host, as clinopyroxenes and Ti-andradite are mantled by cuspidine, and nepheline by sodalite and phlogopite—potassian kinoshitalite solid solutions. A microxenolith of ijolite exhibits similar reaction phenomena. The minerals of the xenocryst suite have similar compositions to plutonic ijolites found at Oldoinyo Lengai, and are thus considered to be derived by the fragmentation of such material in a previously contaminated natrocarbonatite melt. The latter, which has cuspidine, sodalite and monticellite as primary liquidus phases, is considered to have been formed by the complete assimilation of ijolitic material in a natrocarbonatite magma at depth in the volcano conduit. The occurrence of trace amounts of cuspidine, Fe-Mn-monticellite, K-Fe sulphide and Mn-Ti-spinel in recently erupted natrocarbonatites is ascribed to similar, but less extensive, assimilation of silicate material prior to their eruption.

The crystal chemistry of allactite from Långban, Värmland (Sweden) was investigated by single-crystal X-ray and neutron diffraction, optical absorption spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) and electron microprobe analysis by wavelength-dispersive spectroscopy (EPMA-WDS). The optical spectra indicate the presence of Mn in valence state 2+ only. Assuming 16 O atoms per formula unit, arsenic as As5+ and the (OH) content calculated by charge balance, the resulting formula based on the EPMA-WDS data is (Mn2+ 6.73Ca0.13Mg0.12Zn0.02)∑7.00(As5+)2.00O16H8, very close to the ideal composition Mn7(AsO4)2(OH)8. In the unpolarized FTIR spectrum of allactite, fundamental (OH)-stretching bands are observed at 3236, 3288, 3387, 3446, 3484, 3562 and 3570 cm–1, suggesting that a number of OH environments, with different hydrogen bond strengths, occur in the structure. The neutron structure refinement shows that four independent H sites occur in allactite with full site occupancy, all as members of hydroxyl groups. The complex hydrogen-bonding scheme in the allactite structure is now well defined, with at least nine hydrogen bonds energetically favourable with mono-, bi- and trifurcated configurations.

The Currywongaun and Doughruagh masses of northern Connemara represent a section through a syntectonic, partially layered intrusion formed of ultrabasic cumulates all having plagioclase of around An94. Differentiation and contamination of the magma from which these cumulates were precipitated ultimately produced an acid residuum which was responsible for the hydrous metasomatism of the earlier formed ultrabasic rocks resulting in the extensive formation of quartz-amphibole-anorthite gneisses in the petrogenetically ‘upper’ parts of the intrusion. Coexisting Ca-rich and Ca-poor amphiboles in the gneisses are interpreted as ‘frozen’ reaction intermediates that were in local equilibrium. The bulk-rock chemical data presented confirm that the compositions of the quartz-rich gneisses can be attributed almost entirely to the addition of Si to the ultrabasic rocks, coupled with the removal of Mg and Ca. The data also suggest that Zr, which reaches around 1000 ppm in some of the gneisses, may have been ‘mobile’ under these conditions of hydrothermal metasomatism.

The densification of pure magnesia was examined along with mixtures containing 0·5 and 1·0 mol % of calcium oxide and forsterite. The sintering behaviour at temperatures between 1400 and 1800 °C was studied and measurements made of changes in shrinkage, porosity, bulk density, and grain size for sintering times of up to 8 h at sintering temperature. It was found that both the 0·5 and 1·0 mol % additions enhanced the sintering of pure magnesia in the temperature range 1500–1700 °C Increased grain growth was found for mixtures containing forsterite but little change occurred for mixtures containing lime. Examination of the grain growth data showed that the mixtures obeyed a relationship: Time at temperature × Constant = (grain size)n, where n = 2 for the grain growth of pure magnesia and mixtures containing lime, but n = 3 for mixtures of magnesia with additions of a silicate such as forsterite. A value of 78 kcal/mole was obtained for the grain growth of pure magnesia, which agrees with other researches.

The extent of the solubility of lime in periclase for each lime-magnesia mixture at each temperature was also examined using electron probe analysis and related to the sintering behaviour observed for these mixtures.

Deerite has been found in layers of Fe-rich metasediments, metamorphosed under conditions of blueschist to eclogite facies (T = ca. 480°C). Geochemical comparisons with other deerites described in the literature show that the Ile de Groix deerites most closely resemble the Mn-poor, alpine type, and Sifnos deerites. The P-T conditions of the Ile de Groix metamorphism do not conform with the stability field of deerite. In the assemblages examined here deerite seems to be a relic from earlier stages of prograde metamorphism.

The new mineral, dyrnaesite-(La), is found in the Ilímaussaq alkaline complex, South Greenland. The holotype material originates from an arfvedsonite lujavrite sheet as an accessory mineral. Dyrnaesite-(La) is pale yellowish green, with no cleavage and an irregular fracture. Density is 3.68(2)/3.682 g/cm3 (measured/ calculated). It is biaxial, negative, 2Vα = 47(1)/48 (measured/calculated); α = 1.6226(5), β = 1.6852(10), γ = 1.6982(2); X = c, Y = a, Z = b. The average values of microprobe analyses are (wt.%) P2O5 37.17, SiO2 0.15, CaO 0.90, Na2O 20.06, La2O3 16.44, CeO2 20.23, Pr2O3 1.40, Nd2O3 3.47, Sm2O3 0.24, Dy2O3 0.06, Y2O3 0.06.

The crystal structure was solved from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. Dyrnaesite-(La) is orthorhombic, Pnma; a = 18.4662(7) Å, b = 16.0106(5) Å, c = 7.0274(2) Å, V = 2077.7(2) Å3, Z = 4. The structural formula calculated from the diffraction data and microprobe analysis is Na7.89(Ce0.94Ca0.06)∑1.00(Ca0.12La1.14Ce0.40Pr0.10Nd0.24)∑2.00(PO4)6, the simplified formula is Na8Ce4+REE2(PO4)6. The crystal structure is related closely to that of vitusite-(Ce), but is distinct from it in several aspects. The five strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are (d Å, (I %), (hkl)); 6.57 (100) (101), 4.62 (40) (301, 230, 400), 3.50 (40) (331), 2.80 (86) (232, 402), 2.67 (54) (060,630).

A new variety of garnet, a chromian hydrogrossular, has been found in a loose block of diopside-albite rock in a quarry of serpentinite in Jordanów, Lower Silesia. Its chemical formula is given. Although the water content of this garnet barely exceeds 1 %, the X-ray, thermal, infra-red spectrophotometric, and optical examinations give evidence that this water, in the form of (OH)4 groupings, substitutes for the SiO4 tetrahedra. The chromian hydrogrossular from Jordanów belongs to the numerous calcium-rich silicates that were formed there during the process of alteration of serpentinites by lime-rich hydrothermal solutions.

A recent review paper on nepheline solid solutions dealt mainly with sodic varieties from nepheline syenites and differentiated alkali basaltic sills. Excel spreadsheets were provided for recalculating cell formulae in terms of the stoichiometric parameters ΔAlcavity cation charge and ΔTframework charge and molecular percentages of the end-members Ne, Ks, Ca-nepheline and excess Si (Qxs). Small amounts of tetrahedral divalent species (usually <0.10 wt.% though with up to 0.33 wt.% MgO) were related to a stuffed-tridymite end-member of ideal formula K8Mg4Si12O32 (denoted KsT2+-nepheline), although the equations used to calculate these end-members only considered Si, Al and Fe3+ as tetrahedral framework species. Recently, K-rich nepheline and kalsilite which contain up 0.54 wt.% MgO have been found in some feldspar-free mafic potassic volcanic rocks from central Brazil. Equations have been developed to deal rigorously with the presence of significant amounts of Mg (and Mn) in recalculating nepheline solid-solution parameters. In two related communications reworked spreadsheets are provided with examples of their use. High quality microprobe analyses of nepheline and kalsilite from magmatic rocks must include analyses for Mg and Mn and, if possible, estimates of Fe2+ contents.

A new data analysis toolkit which is suitable for the analysis of large-scale, long-term datasets and the phenomenon/anomalies they represent is described. The toolkit aims to expose and quantify scientific information in a number of forms contained within a time-series based dataset in a quantitative and rigorous manner, reducing the subjectivity of observations made, thereby supporting the scientific observer. The features contained within the toolkit include the ability to handle non-uniform datasets, time-series component determination, frequency component determination, feature/event detection and characterization/parameterization of local behaviours. An application is presented of a case study dataset arising from the 'Lasgit' experiment.

The criteria for the definition of a new mineral species currently used by the Commission on New Minerals Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) of the International Mineralogical Association are critically examined. In particular, the rule of the dominant constituent can violate the laws of conservation of electric charge. A series of additional rules: (1) valency-imposed double site-occupancy; (2) the dominant-valency rule; and (3) the site-total-charge approach, have been developed in an attempt to correct this error. However, none of these rules can overcome the fundamental flaw introduced by the rule of the dominant constituent, and the chemical formulae resulting from application of these rules can violate the requirements of an end-member, particularly that of electroneutrality. As a result, the IMA–CNMNC rules cannot derive end-member formulae for some groups of minerals, giving rise to many ad hoc decisions in defining distinct mineral species.

Five celestine crystals were sampled from the (palaeo)surface intervening between the late Miocene to Pleistocene basaltic sequences of the Jabal Eghei (Nuqay) volcanic province in southern Libya and then characterised by applying a combination of the SEM–WDS, ICP/OES, PXRD and IR methods. Colour variations and related minerogenetic frameworks were also investigated. Three samples have greenish-blue-to-blue colour (480.4–482.5 nm), whereas the other two samples have blue–green colour (cyan; 489.1–494.1 nm). The colour purity ranges from 1.36–7.16. Their composition is similar, end-member celestine, in which only 1.6–4.1 at.% of Sr2+ content was substituted by Pb2+ (0.7–0.9 at.%), Ba2+ (0.5–0.7 at.%) and Ca2+ (0.2–0.8 at.%). Three samples contained vacancies, from 1.0 to 1.9 at.%. The content of other chemical elements is minor. The resulting unit-cell parameters have the ranges: a0 = 8.3578(9)–8.3705(6) Å; b0 = 5.3510(5)–5.3568(4) Å; c0 = 6.8683(7)–6.8767(2) Å and V0 = 307.17(5)–308.34(4) Å3. The PXRD and IR results are mainly in accordance with the SEM–WDS results, with a high level of correlation. However, a few discrepancies were found, producing several possible interpretations, the primary cause being a slight unit-cell axial anisotropy i.e. thermal expansion. As a consequence these results yield a new geothermometric tool that is based on the unit-cell axial anisotropy. The celestines investigated were formed during a Miocene intraplate volcanism with basaltic magmas, and associated brines lifted by the structural conduits (normal faults crosscutting the Sirt basin). The Sr-bearing fluids then poured into and over the faulted and fractured lagoon-type gypsum, anhydrite Eocene sediments. The celestine mineralisation formed within a ~368–430 K (~95–157°C) temperature range. The celestine formed at slightly elevated temperature and pressure conditions, close to the shallow subsurface environment (over 250 bars).

In a previous paper a description of a method was given which had been developed to determine the indicatrix of small crystals, both in orientation and magnitude, making use of the simple one-circle stage goniometer described by Bernal and Carlisle.

As was explained there, when a crystal is viewed in parallel polarized light, between crossed nicols, the two observed extinction directions are the axes of the ellipse determined by the intersection of the indicatrix with a plane through its centre parallel to the plane of the microscope stage.

Some two years since the authors received from East Cornwall examples of a erystallised mineral presenting features dissimilar to those of any species previously known to them, but presumably referable to Dufrenite. The specimens obtained were from the central part of a narrow neck of "dead ground" (compact ferruginous quartz rock) connecting the much broader E. and W. continuations of a lode, yielding respectively copper and tin ores.

The freshest crystals have a vitreous lustre, and vary in colour from almost black to a light apple-green, their sections, however, being of a yellow brown to yellow. Where, as commonly, some superficial chemical change has taken place—seemingly into limonite—the colour is from red to brown or yellowish brown.

Microprobe and X-ray investigation of a mineral occurring with breithauptite, nickeline, and other arsenides in the naujaite at Igdlúnguaq, Ilímaussaq alkaline massif, S. Greenland, shows that this mineral, which was formerly misidentified as ‘maucherite’, is a westerveldite (Fe0·85Ni0·15)As, of much iron-richer composition than the nickeloan westerveldites from the only two other known occurrences of this mineral. Westerveldite from Igdlúnguaq was presumably formed by reaction of nickeline with iron-rich solutions under conditions of reheating at temperatures of about 450° C and under partial pressures of arsenic below those necessary to stabilize nickeline. Sulphur-bearing löllingite occurs as exsolution blades in the westerveldite. Iron-rich nickeline, up to a composition (Ni0·82Fe0·18)As0·95Sb0·05, was presumably formed by recrystallization of nickeline in the transition stage just before this mineral became unstable and was replaced by westerveldite.

Amphiboles of the tremolite-ferro-actinolite series from the Bergslagen district in central Sweden have between 0 and 46% of their M1-M3 sites occupied by Mn. These amphiboles are divided into two groups; (1) a group characterised by Mn (M1-M3) > (Mg or Fe) (M1-M3), and (2) a group with much lower contents of Mn (M1-M3), showing the following chemical characteristics: (a) Mn (M1-M3) never exceeds Fe (M1-M3); (b) in Mg-rich members of the group [Mg (M1-M3) > (Mn or Fe) (M1- M3)], the highest amounts of Mn (M1-M3) occur in amphiboles with about 2.20 Mg (M1-M3) per formula unit (pfu); in Fe-rich members of the group Fe [(M1-M3) > (Mg or Mn) (M1-M3)] high amounts of Mn (M1-M3) [> 0.4 Mn (MI-M3)] pfu only occur in amphiboles with >3.40 Fe (M1-M3) pfu; (d) the lowest amounts of Mn (M1-M3) occur in amphiboles with Mg (M1-M3) = Fe (M1-M3).

Mn (M4) increases with increasing amounts of Mn (M1-M3), indicating that solid solution towards the tirodite-dannemorite series is enhanced by incorporation of Mn (M1-M3).
