We describe the mineralogy of a lamproite dyke from Gundrapalli village (Nalgonda district), Telangana, India. The dyke consists of a mineral assemblage characteristic of lamproites in terms of the presence of amphiboles (mainly potassic-richterite together with potassic-arfvedsonite, magnesio-riebeckite, Ti-rich potassic-magnesio-arfvedsonite, potassic-magnesio-arfvedsonite, katophorite and potassic-ferri-katophorite), Al-poor pyroxene, phlogopite (Ti-rich, Al-poor), pseudomorphed leucite, spinel (chromite-magnesiochromite), fluorapatite, baryte, titanite, rutile, barytocalcite, calcite, ilmenite, hydro-zircon, baotite, strontianite, allanite, quartz and pyrite. The absence of wadeite and priderite have been compensated for by the presence of baotite, rutile, titanite, baryte and hydro-zircons. The presence of the secondary phases: allanite, hydro-zircon, chlorite, quartz and cryptocrystalline silica, implies that the dyke has undergone deuteric alteration. On the basis of its typomorphic mineralogy the Gundrapalli dyke has been classified as a pseudoleucite-phlogopite-amphibole-lamproite. We report the presence of the rare mineral baotite from this lamproite, the first recognition of baotite from a lamproite in India. The mineralogy of the baotite-bearing Gundrapalli lamproite is analogous to the baotite-bearing Kvaløya lamproite from Troms, Norway.

Electron microprobe analysis of barikaite (Topa et al., 2013) indicates the chemical formula Ag2.90Tl0.04Pb9.31As11.26Sb8.12S40.37. Barikaite is monoclinic, with a 8.533(1) Å, b 8.075(1) Å, c 24.828(2) Å, and β 99.077(1)°; unit-cell volume 1689.2 Å3 and the space-group setting is P21/n. This compares well with the unit-cell parameters of rathite Pb10Tl0.9As17.9Sb1.3Ag2S40 from the Lengenbach deposit with the same lattice setting. Barikaite is a member of sartorite homologous series (N = 4). The unit cell of barikaite contains eight cation sites and ten anion sites. Four of the cation sites have mixed occupancies – the split sites As2–Sb2, As3–Sb3, Ag5–As5 and the site Me6 with three cations involved. Two of the lead sites, Pb1 and Pb2, display tricapped trigonal prismatic coordinations and alternate along the 8.53 Å a direction. They form zig-zag walls parallel to (001). There are three distinct [100] columns of alternating cations, As1–(As, Sb)2, Sb4–(As, Sb)3 and (As, Ag)5–(Pb, Sb)6 which together form trapezoidally configured single (013) layers. These layers aggregate into tightly-bonded double layers, separated by lone electron pair micelles. In barikaite, the predominantly As-occupied and Sb-occupied sites are distributed in a chess-board-like scheme.

AT the time when the hydrated aluminium phosphate-sulphate hotsonite (Beukes et al., 1984a) and its equally rare relative zaherite (Beukes et al., 1984b; De Bruiyn et al., 1985) were discovered near Pofadder, South Africa, very little was known about the unit cells of the other two hydrated aluminium phosphate-sulphate minerals sanjuanite and kribergite, originally described by De Abeledo et al. (1968) from Argentina and Sweden, respectively. Although the Powder Diffraction file (PDF) contains the X-ray diffraction patterns for sanjuanite and kribergite (PDF 20-47 and 20-48 respectively), they had not been indexed nor have their unit cell parameters been calculated thus far.

Grandidierite occurs in the outer margin of a biotite-rich pelitic xenolith in norite close to the contact of a tourmaline-bearing granite in the Haddo House norite-gabbro complex. The boron for the grandidierite was derived by metasomatism from the granite. The assemblage is (decreasing order): An55–51 plagioclase (65%), biotite (10%), spinel (10%), cordierite (5%), corundum (5%), ilmenite, grandidierite (< 1%), rutile, sphene, zircon. XMg range is grandidierite (0.80–0.78) > cordierite (0.78) > biotite (c. 0.59) > spinel (0.35–0.27). The grandidierite has little chemical variation: SiO2, 19.9–20.5%; Al2O3, 51.3–51.9%. A compilation of all grandidierite analyses in the literature shows that the only substitutions are Fe2+ ⇌ Mg and Al ⇌ Fe3+, the XMg range being 0.98 to 0.19.

Arisite-(La), ideally NaLa2(CO3)2[F2x(CO3)1–x]F, is a new layered REE-fluorcarbonate mineral from miarolitic cavities within the Aris phonolite, Namibia (IMA no. 2009-019). It occurs as distinct chemical zones mixed with its Ce-analogue, arisite-(Ce). Crystals are vitreous, transparent beige, beige-yellow, light lemon-yellow to pinkish, and occur as tabular prisms up to 1.5 mm. Arisite-(La) is brittle, has conchoidal fracture, poor cleavage perpendicular to (001), a Mohs hardness of ~3–3½, is not fluorescent in either long- or shortwave UV radiation, dissolves slowly in dilute HCl at room temperature and sinks in methylene iodide, Dcalc. = 4.072 g cm–3. Arisite-(La) is uniaxial negative, has sharp extinction, with both ω and ε exhibiting a range of values within each grain: ω = 1.696–1.717(4) and ε = 1.594–1.611(3), a result of chemical zoning attributed to both Ce ⇌ La and Na ⇌ Ca substitutions. The crystal structure of both arisite-(Ce) and arisite-(La) were solved by direct methods and refined to R = 1.66%, wR2 = 4.31% (Ce) and R = 2.09%, wR2 = 5.26% (La), respectively. Arisite is hexagonal, Pm2, Z = 1, with unit-cell parameters of a = 5.1109(2) Å, c = 8.6713(4) Å, V = 196.16(6) Å3 for arisite-(Ce), and a = 5.1131(7) Å, c = 8.6759(17) Å, V = 196.43(5) Å3 for arisite-(La). Arisite-(Ce) and arisite-(La) are members of the layered, flat-lying REE-fluorcarbonate group which have crystal structures characterized by separate layers of triangular planar groups that parallel the overall layering of the structure, F, REE and alkali or alkaline-earthelements. Overall, the arisite structure can be defined by three distinct layers which parallel (001): (1) ∞[REE(CO3)2F] slabs, (2) sheets of Naϕ9 polyhedra, and (3) ∞[2F/CO3]2–. Based on its (M+F)/C ratio, arisite can further be described as having a dense, flat-lying fluorcarbonate structure, a classification which includes the structurally related mineral species cordylite, kukharenkoite, cebaite, lukechangite, huanghoite, and one incompletely characterized synthetic phase, NaY2(CO3)3F.

A method of epithermal neutron activation analysis for uranium and thorium is discussed in relation to other rapid analytical methods for these elements. Caledonian granites are divided into four main groups on the basis of U and Th contents: (a) a group of evolved late granites with high U and Th contents and high Th/U ratios, (b) a group of uranium-enriched mineralized granites, (c) granites containing approximately average levels of U and Th, and (d) a group of granites with low thorium content.

The crystal chemistry of sekaninaite from Dolní Bory, Czech Republic, was characterized by a multimethod approach. Particular emphasis was put on the characterization of the channel constituents (i.e. H2O and CO2). Electron microprobe analysis shows the sample to be close to the Fe endmember [XFe = Fe/(Fe+Mg) = 94%) with significant Mn (1.48 wt.%) present; laser ablation mass-spectrometry showed the presence of 0.42 wt.% Li2O. H2O and CO2 contents (1.48 and 0.17 wt.%, respectively) were determined via secondary-ion mass-spectrometry. Sample homogeneity was checked by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) imaging using a microscope equipped with a focal plane array detector. Single-crystal FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the presence of two types of H2O groups in different orientations (with prevalence of the type II orientation), and that CO2 is oriented preferentially normal to the crystallographic c axis. Using the Beer-Lambert relation, integrated molar coefficients, εi, were calculated for both types of H2O (εi H2O[I] = 6000±2000; εi H2O[II] = 13000±1000) and for CO2 (εiCO2 = 2000±1000).

Sector-zoning is brought out by mineral inclusions (plagioclase, biotite, hornblende, sphene, and apatite) in 2 to 5 cm microcline megacrysts of the Godani Valley pluton, Nigeria. The inclusions are concentrated in the megacryst rims beneath the faces {110} and {20}; the megacryst cores are not sector-zoned. Comparison with other occurrences (Portugal and Czechoslovakia) shows that this type of sector-zoning is not controlled by growth rate. Chemical sector-zoning does not occur in the Godani megacrysts. Growth from magma is proposed, with preference for inclusions on faces at a high angle to the feldspar a-chain. A superficially similar type of sector-zoning occurs in microcline megacrysts of both pluton and wall rock at Papoose Flat, California, suggesting that this feature can be generated either by growth from magma or by replacement.

Corundum with inclusions of enigmatic super-reduced minerals was found in mineral separates received as a result of alluvial sediment exploration near Mt Carmel, Israel by the Shefa Yamim Company. This corundum, registered as ‘Carmel sapphireTM’, has been an object of numerous publications by W. Griffin's scientific team, in which they propose a questionable hypothesis of sapphire formation at the crust–mantle boundary with the participation of CH4+H2 fluids. Typically the Carmel sapphire is in small fragments of breccia with white cement, which in the opinion of Griffin et al. is a carbonate-cemented volcanic ash. Our investigation of the ‘white breccia’ showed that it consists of unsorted angular fragments of Carmel sapphire from ~1 μm to 7 mm in size cemented by aluminium hydroxides (bauxite) and is a waste product of the fused alumina process, i.e. it has an anthropogenic origin. Phases typical for slags of fused alumina production and metallurgical slags were identified in the ‘white breccia’. Carmel sapphire has numerous microscopic spherical inclusions of Si–Fe alloy indicating that the removal of Si and Fe from the corundum melt occurred at a temperature >2000°С. Osbornite, TiN, from Carmel sapphire has a chemical zonation characteristic of osbornite from fused alumina with enrichment of central zones in carbon. Comparison of the growth heterogeneity of Carmel sapphire and ‘electrocorundum’ indicates that the crystallisation of the corundum melt proceeded in a similar way. Unfortunately, in the case of Carmel sapphire from the Carmel locality, the contamination of geological samples with anthropogenic material has led to popularisation of biased views.

Unusual clinopyroxenes were synthesized in the study of the join CaFeAlSiO6-CaTiAl2O6 in air at I atm. Clinopyroxene solid solution, hibonite solid solution, X-phase, perovskite, and corundum are present, and at subsolidus temperatures the clinopyroxene singlephase field extends up to about 19 wt% CaTiAl2O6. The CaTiAl2O6 component in the clinopyroxene however increases beyond the clinopyroxene single-phase field and attains 23 wt%. These clinopyroxene solid solutions are extremely poor in SiO2 and extremely rich in Al2O3, Fe2O3, and TiO2, and more than half of tetrahedral sites are occupied by AlIV, contravening the aluminium avoidance principle.

Arsenoflorencite-(Ce) has been found at three localities in Australia—two in South Australia, and one in Queensland. It occurs as colourless to light brown scalenohedral crystals and crystal fragments in stream sediments. Electron microprobe analysis gave Ce2O3 12.97, La2O3 8.62, Pr2O3 3.35, Nd2O3 2.40, Gd2O3 1.38, Sm2O3 0.38, SrO 1.99, Al2O3 28.75, As2O5 27.02, P2O5 4.68, SO3 1.21%; calc, H2O 9.36%; total 102.11%. The simplified formula is REAl3(AsO4)2(OH)6, with Ce as the dominant RE element. Arsenoflorencite-(Ce) is rhombohedral, has space group R3m with αhex. 7.029 and chex. 16.517 Å, and Z = 3. Strongest X-ray powder diffraction lines are: 3.513(6)(110), 2.963(10)(113), 2.201(4)(107), 1.905(5)(303) and 1.753 Å(4)(220). Density is 4.096 (meas.) and 4.091 (calc.) g/cm3. Hardness is VHN10 170. Arsenoflorencite-(Ce) is brittle, breaks with a conchoidal fracture, and has no perceptible cleavage. The mineral is colourless in transmitted light, uniaxial positive, and has ω 1.739 and ɛ 1.745 (λ = 589 nm). Arsenoflorencite-(Ce) is the arsenate analogue of florencite-(Ce), and the name was chosen to indicate this relationship.

The crystal structure of eztlite has been determined using single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction and supported using electron microprobe analysis and powder diffraction. Eztlite, a secondary tellurium mineral from the Moctezuma mine, Mexico, is monoclinic, space group Cm, with a = 11.466(2) Å, b = 19.775(4) Å, c = 10.497(2) Å, β = 102.62(3)° and V = 2322.6(9) Å3. The chemical formula of eztlite has been revised to ${\rm Pb}_{\rm 2}^{2 +} {\rm Fe}_3^{3 +} $(Te4+O3)3(SO4)O2Cl from that stated previously as ${\rm Fe}_6^{3 +} {\rm Pb}_{\rm 2}^{2 +} $(Te4+O3)3(Te6+O6)(OH)10·nH2O. This change has been accepted by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association, Proposal 18-A. Eztlite was reported originally to be a mixed-valence Te oxysalt; however the crystal structure, bond-valence analysis and charge balance considerations clearly show that all Te is tetravalent. Eztlite contains a unique combination of elements and is only the second Te oxysalt to contain both sulfate and chloride. The crystal structure of eztlite contains mitridatite-like layers, with a repeating triangular nonameric [${\rm Fe}_9^{3 +} $O36]45– arrangement formed by nine edge-sharing Fe3+O6 octahedra, decorated by four trigonal pyramidal Te4+O3 groups, compared to PO4 or AsO4 tetrahedra in mitridatite-type minerals. In eztlite, all four tellurite groups associated with one nonamer are orientated with the lone pair of the Te atoms pointing in the same direction, whereas in mitridatite the central tetrahedron is orientated in the opposite direction to the others. In mitridatite-type structures, interlayer connections are formed exclusively via Ca2+ and water molecules, whereas the eztlite interlayer contains Pb2+, sulfate tetrahedra and Cl–. Interlayer connectivity in eztlite is achieved primarily by connections via the long bonds of Pbφ8 and Pbφ9 groups to sulfate tetrahedra and to Cl–. Secondary connectivity is via Te–O and Te–Cl bonds.

Rare earth elements (REEs, ‘lanthanides’) constitute a vital commodity for technological applications. Although these elements occur at trace levels in many minerals, they can comprise major constituents of low abundance phosphate, carbonate, silicate and oxide minerals, some of which form during granite weathering. REE-phosphate phases can be a source of phosphorus for essential biomolecules and certain REEs are required by some bacterial enzymes involved in the oxidation of methanol, an important compound in the global biogeochemical carbon cycle. The mechanisms that promote the dissolution of lanthanide phosphate minerals are largely unknown, but probably vary with the lanthanide phosphate mineralogy of weathered rock and soil. Here, we studied weathering of five I-type, three S-type and one A-type granite to determine the extent of weathering of primary REE- and/or P-bearing minerals apatite, allanite and monazite, and the formation of secondary REE/P-bearing minerals. We found evidence for greater mobilisation of REE and P in weathered I-type and A-type granites than in S-types, reflecting the higher solubility of apatite and allanite relative to monazite. Although monazite persisted in highly weathered S-type granites, some alteration was detected. Secondary REE/P-bearing minerals were not detected in two S-type profiles, while spherical secondary REE/P-bearing mineral aggregates were abundant throughout the third S-type profile. Secondary euhedral REE/P-bearing crystals were abundant even in the slightly weathered I-type and A-type granite material, yet they were not detected in the highly weathered material, indicating that these minerals had dissolved. Our findings indicate that mineralogy constrains substantially, but does not control completely, lanthanide availability as a function of degree of weathering. These results have implications for predicting REE and phosphate bioavailability in soils derived from granitic rock types and suggest that highly weathered I-type granites may provide inocula for bioleaching experiments.
