In this study, a rapid powder consolidation method combining powder compact hot pressing and extrusion was utilized to consolidate relatively cheap, high impurity blended powder mixture Ti–6Al–4V alloy. The purpose of this work was to investigate whether a suitable microstructure deriving from a particular heat treatment balance out or compensate for the presence of high interstitial impurity contents. From mechanical property data attained, it was clear that annealing in high α–β region gave a much better combination of mechanical properties: impact toughness (14 J), yield strength (878 MPa), ultimate tensile strength (1092 MPa), and ductility/plastic strain (6.2%) compared to as-extruded material despite the presence of 0.44 wt% oxygen. Therefore, it can be concluded that optimization of microstructures provides improvement to the fracture related properties and Ti–6Al–4V produced in this way is suitable for less demanding applications. For further enhancement in properties, utilization of low oxygen starting powders is vital.

In the past years, numerous alternative cations to replace Pb2+ in perovskite solar cells have been investigated. In terms of toxicity and chemical stability, methylammonium bismuth iodide [(CH3NH3)3Bi2I9 or MBI] containing the Bi3+ cation has been considered as a promising material. However, fabrication of coherent MBI films remains challenging. Recently, significant progress has been achieved by using vapor deposition processes. Compared with solution-processed ones, vapor-deposited MBI solar cells show higher fill factors and efficiencies. In this work, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of MBI is investigated. Employing nitrogen as carrier gas, the precursors bismuth iodide (BiI3) and methylammonium iodide (MAI) are deposited sequentially over several cycles and form MBI during the process. In order to form dense and coherent layers, the lengths of the deposition cycles as well as the substrate temperature have been optimized. Scanning electron microscopy reveals the strong influence of both parameters on growth and crystal properties. Optimized films of MBI integrated into solar cells show that CVD of MBI is a promising method for fabricating large-area solar cells.

This article mainly focuses on stabilization treatments that influence stress corrosion resistance of an AA5383-H15 alloy after undergoing sensitization treatment at 100 °C/168 h. The results show that without stabilization of the sensitized AA5383-H15 alloy, the β precipitates are distributed continuously like a mesh at grain boundary, and this is the main cause of intergranular corrosion failure. However, applying 3 different stabilization treatments (220 °C/3 h, 250 °C/3 h, and 280 °C/3 h) to the AA5383-H15 alloy shows a dramatic decrease in the β phase precipitation routes along the grain boundaries after the sensitization treatment, and thus an effective improvement in the corrosion resistance performance of AA5383-H15 alloys. Of all the stabilization treatments, the application of 250 °C/3 h stabilization treatment is found to be most effective. Applying 250 °C/3 h stabilization treatment facilitated partial recrystallization of the matrix, leading to suppress the continuous precipitation of the β phase along the grain boundaries during sensitization but instead precipitate in discontinuous mesh-like distribution, which can decrease its sensitivity to stress corrosion.

Wire-shaped supercapacitors (WSSCs) hold great promise in portable and wearable electronics. Herein, a novel kind of high-performance coaxial WSSCs has been demonstrated and realized by scrolling porous carbon dodecahedrons/Al foil film electrode on vertical FeOOH nanosheets wrapping carbon fiber tows (FeOOH NSs/CFTs) yarn electrode. Remarkably, ionogel is utilized as solid-state electrolyte and exhibits a high thermal/electrochemical stability, which effectively ensures the great reliability and high operating voltage of coaxial WSSCs. Benefiting from the intriguing configuration, the coaxial WSSCs with superior flexibility act as efficient energy storage devices and exhibit low resistance, high volumetric energy density (3.2 mW h/cm3), and strong durability (82% after 10,000 cycles). Importantly, the coaxial WSSCs can be effectively recharged by harvesting sustainable wind source and repeatedly supply power to the lamp without a decline of electrochemical performance. Considering the facile fabrication technology with an outstanding performance, this work has paved the way for the integration of sustainable energy harvesting and wearable energy storage units.

Chemically modified polymer coatings have been synthesized using a blend of soft polymeric material polydimethylsiloxane (h-PDMS) incorporated with stiff polymer epoxy resin (EP) and was cross-linked using silane compatibilizer 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). A comparative analysis has been carried out between neat epoxy coating (N-EP) and epoxy–hydroxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (EP-hPD) blends to study the influence of blending ratio on various properties to cater marine applications. An increase of 144.4% in the Young’s modulus (E) and 37.5% increment in adhesion strength at 30 wt% h-PDMS content was observed as compared with N-EP. The water contact angle results demonstrated a substantial increase in contact angle from 52.3° to 90.1° at 30 wt% h-PDMS content as compared to N-EP. Taber abrasion results revealed a decrease in weight loss (mg/1000 cycles) by 24.1 and 17.7% at 10 and 30 wt% loading of h-PDMS in comparison to N-EP. The surface roughness of N-EP and 30 wt% EP-hPD blend were found to be 33.4 nm and 41.4 nm, respectively. To determine the applicability of the developed blend coatings obligatory tests such as field immersion study and chemical resistance evaluation were conducted, and optimum performance was manifested by EP-hPD blend at an EP:h-PDMS ratio of 70:30.

Oxide inclusions such as gray spots are the main defects caused by rail flash butt welding (FBW). An appropriate temperature field and upsetting process are essential for the extrusion of joint impurities. This study constructed a thermomechanical coupling model for the solid-state upsetting process of rail FBW through a combination of finite element simulation and experiment. Subsequently, the effects of different temperature fields and upsetting parameters on the extrusion behavior of impurities were studied. The results show that when the lateral deformation of the joint is not considered, selecting the appropriate upsetting length and increasing the width of the high-temperature plastic zone are beneficial for the extrusion of harmful impurities. Moreover, using variable speed upsetting or increasing the speed of the early upsetting facilitates the extrusion of impurities. However, the impurities in the deeper areas of the rail are difficult to move, and they easily form gray spot defects if the oxide inclusions remain.

Metal matrix composites (MMCs) have great potential to replace monolithic metals in many engineering applications due to their enhanced properties, such as higher strength and stiffness, higher operating temperature, and better wear resistance. Despite their attractive mechanical properties, the application of MMCs has been limited primarily due to their high cost and relative low fracture toughness and reliability. Microstructure determines material fracture toughness through activation of different failure mechanisms. In this paper, a 3D multiscale modeling technique is introduced to resolve different failure mechanisms in MMCs. This approach includes 3D microstructure generation, meshing, and cohesive finite element method based failure analysis. Calculations carried out here concern Al/SiC MMCs and focus on primary fracture mechanisms which are correlated with microstructure characteristics, constituent properties, and deformation behaviors. Simulation results indicate that interface debonding not only creates tortuous crack paths via crack deflection and coalescence of microcracks but also leads to more pronounced plastic deformation, which largely contributes to the toughening of composite materials. Promotion of interface debonding through microstructure design can effectively improve the fracture toughness of MMCs.

Despite lower hardness, stiffness, and resistance to harsh environments, heavy metallic parts and soft polymer-based composites are often preferred to ceramics because they offer higher resilience. By contrast, highly mineralized biomaterials combine these properties through hierarchical and heterogeneous architecture. Reproducing these internal designs into synthetic highly mineralized materials would therefore widen their range of application. To this aim, external fields have been used to control the orientation and position of microparticles and build complex architectures. This approach is compatible with most manufacturing processes and provides large flexibility in design. Here, I present an overview of these processes and describe how they can augment the properties of the materials produced. Theoretical and experimental descriptions are detailed to determine the strengths and limitations of each technique. With this knowledge, potential areas of improvement and future research directions will lead to the creation of highly mineralized materials with unprecedented functionalities.

Refinement and homogenization of primary Si particles in hypereutectic Al–Si alloys is an effective route to enhance the tensile strength and wear resistance and satisfy the industrial requirements for a wide range of applications. Herein, two kinds of semisolid hypereutectic Al–Si alloys are synthesized by using a rotating-rod-induced nucleation technology. The influence of different cooling conditions and shear rates on the apparent viscosity of molten melt of slurry are examined by self-made high-precision and high-temperature apparent viscosity test equipment. The correlation between the shear rate and the uniformity of hard phases has been investigated from the obtained results, fitting curves, and optical microscope. With the increase in the shear rate, the particles tend to become rounder and the apparent viscosity becomes lower. The enhanced shape factor resulted in more rounded grains, which further reduced the apparent viscosity. During the same cooling time, the higher cooling rate resulted in higher solid fraction, generating higher apparent viscosity. The present study provides unique insight into the filling behavior of semisolid hypereutectic Al–Si alloys and serves as a baseline for future work.

A bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)-templated strategy was developed to fabricate mesoporous CdxZn1−xS polyhedrons with improved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity, and the formation mechanism of these mesoporous polyhedrons was discussed in detail. Incorporating Cd atoms, the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface areas of mesoporous CdxZn1−xS polyhedrons were significantly increased (271 m2/g), providing more exposed active sites compared with ZnS. In addition, suitable conduction band potential (< −0.55 eV) of the mesoporous CdxZn1−xS polyhedrons was also beneficial for the photocatalysis. Impressively, by the co-effects of mesoporous structure and modified conduction band, the mesoporous CdxZn1−xS polyhedrons exhibited better photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution than most reported photocatalysts without noble metals. The maximum hydrogen evolution rate of the CSZ3 reached 4.10 mmol/(h g) under visible-light irradiation and without any cocatalyst condition. This facile strategy for the construction of mesoporous CdxZn1−xS polyhedrons provided a deep insight to fabricate other metal sulfides for a variety of photochemical applications.

Coarsening mechanism of precipitations was investigated in a weld metal of Alloy 617 during long-term aging at 750 °C, and its effect on impact toughness was clarified distinctly. The needle-like M6C phases at the grain boundary nucleated and coarsened at 2000 h and then presented a stable size with aging to 8000 h. Spherical γ′ phase grew rapidly with the rate of 0.0121 nm/h when aged at 1000 h; then, its ripening rate (RR) reduced to 0.0033 nm/h at 8000 h and stabilized around it. The coarsening of M6C and γ′ was, respectively, controlled by interface diffusion and volume diffusion with the coarsening rate constant of 7.865 × 10−20 m2/s and 1.519 × 10−27 m3/s. Interaction of M6C and γ′ could facilitate their coarsening and cause dramatic decrease in toughness at the early stage. At aging to 8000 h and more, the lower RR of needle-like M6C phases and γ′ phases helped to form stable toughness at a later stage.

Aging treatment plays an important role in strengthening of 2198 Al–Li alloy. Through a serious of heat treatment processes, a large amount of precipitates emerge, mainly observed to be θ′(Al2Cu), Al3Zr, and T1(Al2CuLi), among which, T1 turns to be the most important precipitate that contributes to the strengthening of 2198 Al–Li alloy. While the temperature of the aging process is 175 °C, the density and size of T1 phase keep increasing through the process and reach peak in about 18 h. T1 phase tends to have a certain orientation relationship of ${\left( {0001} \right)_{{{\rm{T}}_1}}}//{\left\{ {111} \right\}_{{\rm{Al}}}}$, ${\left\langle {1010} \right\rangle _{{{\rm{T}}_{\rm{1}}}}}//{\left\langle {110} \right\rangle _{{\rm{Al}}}}$ and may have different kinds of multilayered structures. In most of the multilayered structures, the distance between two adjacent copper-rich laths is less than that in classical single-layered phase. Thus, it can be inferred that the microstructure of T1 phase might change in the process of developing from single-layered structure to multilayered structure. In addition, the interactions between different phases become relatively frequent when the density of T1 phase reaches a threshold.

Thermal conductivity of uranium dioxide (UO2) is an important nuclear fuel performance property. Radiation- and fission-induced defects and microstructures, such as xenon (Xe) gas bubbles, can degrade the thermal conductivity of UO2 significantly. Here, molecular dynamics simulations are conducted to study the effect of Xe bubble size and pressure on the thermal conductivity of UO2. At a given porosity, thermal conductivity increases with Xe cluster size, then reaches a nearly saturated value at a cluster radius of 0.6 nm, demonstrating that dispersed Xe atoms result in a lower thermal conductivity than clustering them into bubbles. In comparison with empty voids of the same size, Xe-filled bubbles lead to a lower thermal conductivity when the number ratio of Xe atoms to uranium vacancies (Xe:VU ratio) in bubbles is high. Detailed atomic-level analysis shows that the pressure-induced distortion of atoms at bubble surface causes additional phonon scattering and thus further reduces the thermal conductivity.

Electrochemical treatments, such as electropolishing on titanium alloys, are used to promote the formation of nanostructured surfaces, which can contribute to the bone regeneration process. However, sterilization methods can change the superficial and physicochemical properties of the biomaterials. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of three sterilization methods (air plasma, ethanol + PBS, and autoclave sterilizations) on nanostructured Ti6Al4V surfaces properties obtained by electrochemical treatment. These methods, especially the first two, have been widely used in literature, yet few studies in the literature highlight the changes on the surface of the samples. The nanostructures were obtained by electropolishing in a H2SO4/HF/glycerine solution, at 25 V and at 7 °C for 4 min. Samples were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), profilometry, and wettability. Samples were seeded with hESC-MPs, and the cell number was measured. The air plasma sterilization did not promote changes in nanometric morphology and roughness of the Ti6Al4V nanostructured samples. Unlike air plasma sterilization, the ethanol + PBS and the autoclave sterilizations, which strongly affected the nanostructured surface morphology and properties, and, consequently, the cellular viability after 7 days of contact with human embryonic stem cell-derived mesenchymal progenitors (hESC-MPs).

The physicochemical properties and broad applications of graphene have been extensively studied, but its preparation method is still a bottleneck, and it cannot simultaneously meet the requirements of low process cost and high quality of products in the time being. In this article, the redox potential was employed to control the quality of graphene prepared from graphene oxide by chemical reduction. The effects of the initial redox potential on the productivity, microscopic morphology, and structural and intrinsic properties of graphene were investigated. Results showed that there was an optimum initial redox potential range between −1200 and −1180 mV. In such a range could the graphene with a high yield be obtained, and layers of graphene products could be stabilized at 1 or 2 layers. Therefore, the redox potential could be used as an effective parameter instead of trying to design orthogonal tests to determine the optimal conditions and control the synthesis of graphene.

Under conventional solidification conditions, immiscible alloy melt would undergo large-scale composition segregation after liquid–liquid phase separation, resulting in the loss of properties and application value. In the present study, the ternary immiscible Al70Bi10Sn20 alloy was chosen to study the effect of cooling rate on its resultant microstructure by casting the melt under different cooling conditions. The results indicated that the Al–Bi–Sn alloy with a slow cooling rate exhibits a strong spatial phase separation trend during solidification. However, as the cooling rate increases, the decreasing volume fraction of the segregated Bi–Sn-rich regions indicates the efficient suppression of spatial phase separation. The relatively dispersed distribution of Bi–Sn phase in the Al-rich matrix can be obtained by quenching the melt into water. The influence mechanism of cooling rate on the microstructure of the alloy is also discussed. The present study is beneficial to further tailoring the microstructure of immiscible alloys.
