Jökulhlaups in 2007 and 2008 from an ice-dammed lake at the northern margin of Russell Glacier, West Greenland, marked the onset of a renewed jökulhlaup cycle after 20 years of stability. We present a record of successive ice-dammed lake drainage events and associated ice-margin dynamics spanning ∼25 years. Robust calculations of lake volumes and peak discharges are made, based on intensive field surveys and utilizing high-spatial-resolution orthophotographs of the lake basin and ice margin. These data enable identification of controls on the behaviour of the ice-dammed lake and provide the first field-based examination of controls on jökulhlaup magnitude and frequency for this system. We find that Russell Glacier jökulhlaups have a much higher peak discharge than predicted by the Clague–Mathews relationship, which we attribute to an unusually short englacial/subglacial routeway and the presence of a thin ice dam that permits incomplete sealing of jökulhlaup conduits between lake drainage events. Additionally, we demonstrate that the passage of jökulhlaups through an interlinked system of proglacial bedrock basins produces significant attenuation of peak discharge downstream. We highlight that improved understanding of jökulhlaup dynamics requires accurate information about ice-dammed lake volume and ice-proximal jökulhlaup discharge.

Since 1994, at least six major (volume >106m3) ice and rock avalanches have occurred on Iliamna volcano, Alaska, USA. Each of the avalanches was preceded by up to 2 hours of seismicity believed to represent the initial stages of failure. Each seismic sequence begins with a series of repeating earthquakes thought to represent slip on an ice–rock interface, or between layers of ice. This stage is followed by a prolonged period of continuous ground-shaking that reflects constant slip accommodated by deformation at the glacier base. Finally the glacier fails in a large avalanche. Some of the events appear to have entrained large amounts of rock, while others comprise mostly snow and ice. Several avalanches initiated from the same source region, suggesting that this part of the volcano is particularly susceptible to failure, possibly due to the presence of nearby fumaroles. Although thermal conditions at the time of failure are not well constrained, it is likely that geothermal energy causes melting at the glacier base, promoting slip and culminating in failure. The frequent nature and predictable failure sequence of Iliamna avalanches makes the volcano an excellent laboratory for the study of ice avalanches. The prolonged nature of the seismic signal suggests that warning may one day be given for similar events occurring in populated regions.

Balance velocities for the Greenland ice sheet have been calculated from a new digital elevation model (DEM), accumulation rates and an existing ice-thickness grid, using a fully two-dimensional finite-difference scheme. The pattern of velocities is compared with velocities derived from synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) interferometry for three different regions of the ice sheet. Differences between the two estimates of velocity highlight the respective strengths and weaknesses of the datasets and techniques used. A comparison with ten global positioning system-derived velocities indicates that the balance-velocity scheme and input datasets used here provide a remarkably good representation of the velocity distribution inland from the margins. These balance-velocity data, therefore, could help constrain numerical ice-sheet models. The balance velocities were found to be unreliable close to the ice-sheet margins due to larger errors in ice thickness, surface slope and ablation rate in this region. Comparison of the balance velocities with SAR interferometry in the region of the “Northeast Greenland Ice Stream” indicates the importance of the smoothing distance that must be applied to the DEM before calculating balance velocities. A smoothing distance of 20 times the ice thickness gave good agreement between the two measures of velocity.

Time-varying accelerations were observed on Bagley Icefield during the 1993–95 surge of Bering Glacier, Alaska, U.S.A., using repeat-pass synthetic aperture radar interferometry. Observations were from datasets acquired during winter 1991/92 (pre-surge), winter 1993/94 (during the surge) and winter 1995/96 (post-surge). The surge is shown to have extended 110 km up the icefield from Bering Glacier to within 15 km or less of the flow divide. Acceleration and step-like velocity profiles are strongly associated with an along-glacier series of central phase bull’s-eyes with diameters of 0.5–4 km. These bull’s-eyes are interpreted to represent glacier surface rise/fall events of ∼3–30 cm during 1–3 day observation intervals and indicate possible migrating pockets of subglacial water. We present a surge hypothesis that relates late-summer climate to englacial water storage and thence to the subglacial water dynamics — pressurization, hydraulic jacking, depressurization and migration — suggested by our observations.

The hydrological method is used to compute the mass balance of Siachen Glacier in the Nubra Valley, Karakoram Himalaya, India. The method was chosen because of its suitability in rugged terrain. Analysis of precipitation data from the glacier as a function of altitude shows a power-law relationship. Accumulation estimates based on this relationship show good agreement with the recorded precipitation. The discharge data from the glacier show high runoff in the ablation seasons of 1986–87, 1987–88, 1989–90 and 1990–91. The mass-balance calculations for these years are negative, the lowest being in 1990–91 (–1084 mm). Positive mass balance in 1988–89 (+358 mm) is attributed to comparatively heavy winter snowfall amounts and comparatively low temperatures during the ablation season. Significantly lower runoff was measured during this season. Negative mass-balance values during 1989–90 and 1990–91 are a result of comparatively dry winters and comparatively warm ablation periods, with monthly mean air temperatures 1.4–5.1 °C higher at the beginning of the ablation season (June and July) than the mean of the last 5 years.

We develop theoretically a description of a possible subglacial drainage mechanism for glaciers and ice sheets moving over saturated, deformable till. The model is based on the plausible assumption that flow of water in a thin film at the ice-till interface is unstable to the formation of a channelized drainage system, and is restricted to the case in which meltwater cannot escape through the till to an underlying aquifer. In describing the physics of such channelized drainage, we have generalized and extended Röthlisberger’s model of channels cut into basal ice to include “canals” cut into the till, paying particular attention to the role of sediment properties and the mechanics of sediment transport. We show that sediment-floored Röthlisberger (R) channels can exist for high effective pressures, and wide, shallow, ice-roofed canals cut into the till for low effective pressures. Canals should form a distributed, non-arborescent system, unlike R channels. For steep slopes typical of alpine glaciers, both drainage systems can exist, but with the water pressure lower in the R channels than in the canals; the canal drainage should therefore be unstable in the presence of channels. For small slopes typical of ice sheets, only canals can exist and we therefore predict that, if channelized meltwater flow occurs under ice sheets moving over deformable till, it takes the form of shallow, distributed canals at low effective pressure, similar to that measured at Ice Stream B in West Antarctica. Geologic evidence derived from land forms and deposits left by the Pleistocene ice sheets in North America and Europe is also consistent with predictions of the model.

We present an analysis of the active hydrologic system of MacAyeal Ice Stream (MacIS), West Antarctica, from a synthesis of multiple remote-sensing techniques: satellite laser altimetry; satellite image differencing; and hydrologic potential mapping (using a satellite-derived DEM and a bedrock DEM from airborne radio-echo sounding). Combining these techniques augments the information provided by each one individually, and allows us to develop a protocol for studying subglacial hydrologic systems in a holistic manner. Our study reveals five large active subglacial lakes under MacIS, the largest of which undergoes volume changes of at least 1.0 km3. We discuss the hydrologic properties of this system and present evidence for links between the lakes. At least three of the lakes are co-located with sticky spots, i.e. regions of high local basal shear stress. We also find evidence for surface elevation changes due to ice-dynamic effects (not just water movement) caused by changes in basal resistance. Lastly, we show that satellite radar altimetry is of limited use for monitoring lake activity on fast-flowing ice streams with surfaces that undulate on ∼10 km length scales.

Fine-grained, dry snow with a density range of 190–435 kg m−3 was tested in triaxial compression at −12°C with confining pressures varying between 0 and 40 kPa. The tests were strain-rate controlled, with strain rates ranging between 7.4 × 10−7 s−1 and 6.6 × 10−5 s−1. The analysis of the test results revealed that the relationship between yield stress and viscous strain rate is best given by a power law, similar to polycrystalline ice. However, the power-law exponent n is a function of density and varies between 1.8 (low-density snow, ρ < 200 kg m−3) and 3.6 (high-density snow, ρ > 320 kg m−3). The tests also showed that lower-density snow displays a significant non-linear stress–strain response before yielding. Two further aspects of the constitutive behaviour of snow were identified: (1) the strainrate independence of the post-yield work-hardening behaviour in compression and (2) the independence of the axial yield stress in relation to the confining pressure. The experimental observations are discussed with respect to the mechanical properties of polycrystalline ice, which is the constituent material of the load-bearing ice skeleton.

Abrupt changes in crystal-orientation fabric (COF), and therefore viscosity, are observed near the base of the ice sheet throughout West Antarctica. We report on active-source seismic observations from WAIS Divide, mid-stream and downstream on Thwaites Glacier, and the onset region of Bindschadler Ice Stream. These data reveal a prevalence of englacial seismic reflectivity in the bottom quarter of the ice sheet. The observed seismic reflectivity is complex but largely bed-conformable, with long-spatial-wavelength features observed in the flow direction and short-wavelength features observed across flow. A correspondence of englacial structures with bed features is also observed. We determine the origin of the reflectivity to be abrupt changes in the COF of ice, based on the following: (1) observations of englacial reflectivity are consistent with current knowledge of COF within ice sheets, (2) englacial reflectivity caused by COF contrasts requires the simplest genesis, especially at ice divides, and (3) amplitude analysis shows that the observed englacial reflectivity can be explained by contrasts in seismic velocity due to COF changes. We note that the downstream increase in the quantity and complexity of observations indicates that direct observations of COF at ice divides likely underestimate the role that fabric plays in ice-sheet dynamics.

The mechanical properties of glacier beds play a fundamental role in regulating the sensitivity of glaciers to environmental forcing across a wide range of timescales. Glaciers are commonly underlain by deformable till whose mechanical properties and influence on ice flow are not well understood but are critical for reliable projections of future glacier states. Using synoptic-scale observations of glacier motion in different seasons to constrain numerical ice flow models, we study the mechanics of the bed beneath Hofsjökull, a land-terminating ice cap in central Iceland. Our results indicate that the bed deforms plastically and weakens following incipient summertime surface melt. Combining the inferred basal shear traction fields with a Coulomb-plastic bed model, we estimate the spatially distributed effective basal water pressure and show that changes in basal water pressure and glacier accelerations are non-local and non-linear. These results motivate an idealized physical model relating mean basal water pressure and basal slip rate wherein the sensitivity of glacier flow to changes in basal water pressure is inversely related to the ice surface slope.

A photogrammetric survey in 1998 formed the basis for compiling a map of the Tuyuksu glacier region in the northern Tien Shan, Central Asia. Comparison with a map from 1958 enables calculation of the change in glacier volume over 40 years. The results are compared with direct annual measurements carried out continuously since 1956. Central Tuyuksu glacier shows a mass balance of –12.6 mw.e. for the geodetic method and –16.8 m for glaciological measurements. In view of the high accuracy of the maps, the discrepancy can be explained mainly by deficiencies in the glaciological measurements. Application of the precipitation–runoff model HBV-ETH represents the hydrological method of mass-balance determination and delivers specific mass-balance losses almost twice those indicated by the geodetic observations. This discrepancy is suspected to be caused by erroneous runoff measurements. The volume balance derived by the geodetic method is used to calibrate both the glaciological and the hydrological method.

This study fills the gap in hydrologic measurements of runoff exiting a part of the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS), the Kangerlussuaq drainage area, West Greenland. The observations are of value for obtaining knowledge about the terrestrial freshwater and sediment output from part of the GrIS and the strip of land between the ice sheet and the ocean, in the context of varying ice-sheet surface melt and influx entering the ocean. High-resolution stage, discharge and suspended sediment load show a decrease in runoff of ∼25% and in sediment load of ∼40% from 2007 to 2008 in response to a decrease in the summer accumulated number of positive degree-days. During the 2007 and 2008 runoff seasons, jökulhlaups were observed at Kangerlussuaq, drained from an ice-dammed lake at the margin of the GrIS.

The hydrographs of two jökulhlaups resulting from the sudden drainage of an ice-dammed lake in West Greenland in 1984 and 1987 are compared. The first flood had a similar peak discharge to the second but drained only two-thirds of the total volume of the 1987 event which amounted to 32–36 × 106 m3 in 36 h. Calculations based on the lake refill time suggest that it drains every 2–3 years, but that peak flows may be variable from flood to flood. The timing of the jökulhlaups in relation to the melt season may reflect variations of water pressure within the subglacial drainage networks, and changes in the configuration of these networks and the positions of crevasses on an annual basis.

Classical sliding theories consider ice sliding over obstacles which are much shorter than the thickness of overlying ice. Here we present a theory which considers “form drag” generated under ice streams by large obstacles such as subglacial bedforms, which may have lengths comparable to ice thickness. We also investigate how perturbations at the surface of an ice stream can be generated by such bedforms, and develop a mathematical framework for separating the effects of such local (kilometre-scale) variations in ice flow from the bulk flow of the ice stream.

Ice cliffs and ponds on debris-covered glaciers have received increased attention due to their role in amplifying local melt. However, very few studies have looked at these features on the catchment scale to determine their patterns and changes in space and time. We have compiled a detailed inventory of cliffs and ponds in the Langtang catchment, central Himalaya, from six high-resolution satellite orthoimages and DEMs between 2006 and 2015, and a historic orthophoto from 1974. Cliffs cover between 1.4% (± 0.4%) in the dry and 3.4% (± 0.9%) in the wet seasons and ponds between 0.6% (± 0.1%) and 1.6% (± 0.3%) of the total debris-covered tongues. We find large variations between seasons, as cliffs and ponds tend to grow in the wetter monsoon period, but there is no obvious trend in total area over the study period. The inventory further shows that cliffs are predominately north-facing irrespective of the glacier flow direction. Both cliffs and ponds appear in higher densities several hundred metres from the terminus in areas where tributaries reach the main glacier tongue. On the largest glacier in the catchment ~10% of all cliffs and ponds persisted over nearly a decade.

Snow algae in shallow ice cores (7 m long) from Yala Glacier in the Langtang region of Nepal were examined for potential use in ice-core dating. Ice-core samples taken at 5350 m a.s.l. in 1994 contained more than seven species of snow algae. In a vertical profile of the algal biomass, 11 distinct algal layers were observed. Seasonal observation in 1996 at the coring site indicated most algal growth occurred from late spring to late summer. Pit observation in 1991, 1992 and 1994 indicated that algal layer formation takes place annually. δ18O, chemical ions (Na+, Cl−, SO42− and NO3−) and microparticles failed to show any clear seasonal variation, particularly at depths exceeding 2 m, possibly due to heavy meltwater percolation. Snow algae in ice cores would thus appear to be accurate boundary markers of annual layers and should prove useful for ice-core dating in Himalayan-type glaciers.

We investigated the morphological evolution of laboratory snow under isothermal conditions at −3,−9 and −19°C, using X-ray tomography. We employed a two-point density correlation function to measure spatial fluctuations of the density of the bicontinuous ice/vapor system at different length scales. Length scales were derived from the correlation function to distinguish between interfacial coarsening due to the minimization of surface energy on the smallest scales and anisotropic structural rearrangements due to gravity on larger scales. On the smallest scales our data suggest a crossover between T = −9 and −19°C from evaporation/condensation to surface diffusion as the dominant transport mechanism. Anomalous growth was found for the slope of the correlation function at the origin, and it was similar to those reported for the coarsening of fractal clusters. This is consistent with the observed persistence of dendritic structures throughout an entire year. The dynamics of large-scale morphology was characterized by the first zero-crossing of the correlation function which displays a nonmonotonic evolution with a pronounced anisotropy between the direction of gravity and horizontal directions. Since the correlation function naturally emerges in problems of scattering of radiation in snow, our results appear to be important for optical and remote-sensing methods.

Meltwater runoff is an important component of the mass balance of the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) and contributes to eustatic sea-level rise. In situ measurements of river runoff at the ˜325 outlets are nonexistent due to logistical difficulties. We develop a novel methodology using satellite observations of sediment plumes as a proxy for the onset, duration and volume of meltwater runoff from a basin of the GrIS. Sediment plumes integrate numerous poorly constrained processes, including meltwater refreezing and supra- and englacial water storage, and are formed by meltwater that exits the GrIS and enters the ocean. Plume characteristics are measured in Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS, band 1, 250 m) satellite imagery during the 2001-08 melt seasons. Plume formation and cessation in Kangerlussuaq Fjord, West Greenland, are positively correlated (r2 = 0.88, n = 5, p < 0.05; r2 = 0.93, n = 5, p < 0.05) with ablation onset and cessation at the Kangerlussuaq Transect automatic weather station S5 (490 ma.s.l., 6 km from the ice margin). Plume length is positively correlated (r2 = 0.52, n = 35, p < 0.05) with observed 4 day mean Watson River discharge throughout the 2007 and 2008 melt seasons. Plume length is used to infer instantaneous and annual cumulative Watson River discharge between 2001 and 2008. Reconstructed cumulative discharge values overestimate observed cumulative discharge values for 2007 and 2008 by 15% and 29%, respectively.

Automated digital cameras were installed in May–June 2007 beside major West Greenland marine-terminating glaciers as part of the Extreme Ice Survey (EIS). EIS cameras began imaging the lowest 4 km2 of the glacier at hourly intervals throughout sunlit periods of the year. This study presents the development of techniques for quantifying glacier velocity from a single camera perspective. A Multi-Image/Multi-Chip matching procedure yields higher matching skill than conventional matching, and facilitates false-match rejection via a clustering scheme. The matching of motionless on-land features facilitates compensating camera motion. Ray projection to a known terrain elevation allows the assigning of scale to convert pixel displacements to velocity units. With the 10.2-megapixel camera system, velocities on relatively fast glaciers can be resolved at distances up to ∼4 km. At a distance of 2 km, a demonstrated precision of ∼0.5 pixels yields a ∼0.5 m footprint size. Daily velocities indicate progressive multi-day velocity accelerations associated with calving. Deceleration trends are associated with the regrowth of resistive stress after major calving. The higher observation frequency available to terrestrial photogrammetry indicates higher observed intra-seasonal velocity range than observable by the at-best weekly satellite snapshots.

In order to develop and evaluate a method for the determination of glacier volume from ice-thickness data, the volume of Schaufelferner, Austria, is calculated (1) by manual interpolation of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data based on measurements at 36 locations in 1995, (2) by manual interpolation of 144 GPR measurements acquired for a higher-resolution estimate in 2003 and 2006, (3) by multiplying the mean of the measured ice-thickness data by the glacier area, (4) by automatic kriging of the 1995 GPR data and (5) by application of area/volume scaling algorithms to the Austrian glacier inventory data of 1969, 1997 and 2006. The so determined glacier volumes are compared with the ice-volume changes calculated from digital elevation models (DEMs) of the Austrian glacier inventories. The manually interpolated volumes based on the 1995 and 2003/06 GPR data yielded a volume loss only slightly different from volume loss calculated from the glacier inventories of 1997 and 2007. Other methods were not able to reproduce the volume losses of the glacier inventory DEMs. To assess the accuracy of deriving ice-thickness changes with GPR, repeated ice-thickness measurements at the same locations were carried out between 2005 and 2008.
