Stochastic models in population genetics which lead to diffusion equations are considered. A geometric formula for the asymptotic expansions of the fundamental solutions of these equations is presented. Specifically, the random genetic drift process of one-locus theory and the Ohta–Kimura model of two-locus di-allelic systems with linkage are studied. Agreement with the work of Keller and Voronka for the two-allele one-locus case is obtained. For the general n-allele problem, the formulas obtained here are apparently new.

In this article we show the asymptotics of distribution and moments of the size Xn of the minimal clade of a randomly chosen individual in a Bolthausen-Sznitman n-coalescent for n → ∞. The Bolthausen-Sznitman n-coalescent is a Markov process taking states in the set of partitions of {1, …, n}, where 1, …, n are referred to as individuals. The minimal clade of an individual is the equivalence class the individual is in at the time of the first coalescence event this individual participates in. We also provide exact formulae for the distribution of Xn. The main tool used is the connection of the Bolthausen-Sznitman n-coalescent with random recursive trees introduced by Goldschmidt and Martin (2005). With it, we show that Xn - 1 is distributed as the size of a uniformly chosen table in a standard Chinese restaurant process with n - 1 customers.

A body E is completely embedded within a convex body G. A line segment is generated by a measure depending only on E or on both E and G. This line segment is then projected to the surface of G in one or both directions. The distributions of selected line segments of this type are derived.

Motivated by mathematical tissue growth modelling, we consider the problem of approximating the dynamics of multicolor Pólya urn processes that start with large numbers of balls of different colors and run for a long time. Using strong approximation theorems for empirical and quantile processes, we establish Gaussian process approximations for the Pólya urn processes. The approximating processes are sums of a multivariate Brownian motion process and an independent linear drift with a random Gaussian coefficient. The dominating term between the two depends on the ratio of the number of time steps n to the initial number of balls N in the urn. We also establish an upper bound of the form $c(n^{-1/2}+N^{-1/2})$ for the maximum deviation over the class of convex Borel sets of the step-n urn composition distribution from the approximating normal law.

In this paper we obtain a recursive formula for the density of the double-barrier Parisian stopping time. We present a probabilistic proof of the formula for the first few steps of the recursion, and then a formal proof using explicit Laplace inversions. These results provide an efficient computational method for pricing double-barrier Parisian options.

Under the assumption of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) components, the problem of the stochastic comparison of a coherent system having used components and a used coherent system has been considered. Necessary and sufficient conditions on structure functions have been provided for the stochastic comparison of a coherent system having used/inactive i.i.d. components and a used/inactive coherent system. As a consequence, for r-out-of-n systems, it has been shown that systems having used i.i.d. components stochastically dominate used systems in the likelihood ratio ordering.

A realistic non-Poisson arrival process is used in a model for intersections controlled by fixed-cycle traffic lights. Average delays, queue sizes and percentage of delayed vehicles are derived. The distribution of the number of vehicles which pass through during the green phases is found. Certain model anomalies which are inherent in earlier work are eliminated by the use of this model.

Let P(c) = P(X1 ≦ c1, · ··, Xp ≦ cp) for a random vector (X1, · ··, Xp). Bounds are considered of the form where T is a spanning tree corresponding to the bivariate probability structure and di is the degree of the vertex i in T. An optimized version of this inequality is obtained. The main result is that alwayṡ dominates certain second-order Bonferroni bounds. Conditions on the covariance matrix of a N(0,Σ) distribution are given so that this bound applies, and various applications are given.

In a recent paper [7] the authors studied the optimal control policy of the following queueing system. Customers arrive at a service station according to a time homogeneous Poisson process with a known arrival intensity, λ. The service time at the station is a random variable having a negative exponential distribution with intensity μ, which is under control and can be varied over a certain range, according to the management policy.

A semi-Markov decision process, with a denumerable multidimensional state space, is considered. At any given state only a finite number of actions can be taken to control the process. The immediate reward earned in one transition period is merely assumed to be bounded by a polynomial and a bound is imposed on a weighted moment of the next state reached in one transition. It is shown that under an ergodicity assumption there is a stationary optimal policy for the long-run average reward criterion. A queueing network scheduling problem, for which previous criteria are inapplicable, is given as an application.

This paper is a study of the error in approximating the global maximum of a Brownian motion on the unit interval by observing the value at randomly chosen points. One point of view is to look at the error from random sampling for a given fixed Brownian sample path; another is to look at the error with both the path and observations random. In the first case we show that for almost all Brownian paths the error, normalized by multiplying by the square root of the number of observations, does not converge in distribution, while in the second case the normalized error does converge in distribution. We derive the limiting distribution of the normalized error averaged over all paths.

We derive multivariate Sobel–Uppuluri–Galambos-type lower bounds for the probability that at least a1 and at least a2, and for the probability that exactly a1 and a2, out of n and N events, occur. The lower bound presented here reduces to a sharper bound than that of Galambos and Lee (1992). Our approach is by way of indicator functions and bivariate binomial moments. A new concept, marginal Bonferroni summation, is introduced in this paper.

We analyze the unit-demand Euclidean vehicle routeing problem, where n customers are modeled as independent, identically distributed uniform points and have unit demand. We show new lower bounds on the optimal cost for the metric vehicle routeing problem and analyze them in this setting. We prove that there exists a constant ĉ > 0 such that the iterated tour partitioning heuristic given by Haimovich and Rinnooy Kan (1985) is a (2 - ĉ)-approximation algorithm with probability arbitrarily close to 1 as the number of customers goes to ∞. It has been a longstanding open problem as to whether one can improve upon the factor of 2 given by Haimovich and Rinnooy Kan. We also generalize this, and previous results, to the multidepot case.

An urn contains m minus balls and p plus balls, and we draw balls from this urn one at a time randomly without replacement until we wish to stop. Let Pn and Mn denote the respective numbers of plus balls and minus balls drawn by time n and define Z0 = 0, Zn = Pn - Mn, 1 ≤ n ≤ m + p. The main problem of this paper is to stop with maximum probability on the maximum of the trajectory formed by . This problem is closely related to the celebrated ballot problem, so that we obtain some identities concerning the ballot problem and then derive the optimal stopping rule explicitly. Some related modifications are also studied.

The sign-changes over the entire real line of a Gaussian process with unit variance and mean zero are observed. The Gaussian process is reconstructed by an interpolator which is optimal in the class of linear interpolators based on that process which is one when the original process is positive and minus one when it is negative. Sufficient conditions for the interpolator to be a convolution of the sign process and a square integrable function are given. Analytical expressions of the interpolation error are derived, and the behaviour of the interpolator is studied by means of simulations.

We compare dependence in stochastically monotone Markov processes with partially ordered Polish state spaces using the concordance and supermodular orders. We show necessary and sufficient conditions for the concordance order to hold both in terms of the one-step transition probabilities for discrete-time processes and in terms of the corresponding infinitesimal generators for continuous-time processes. We give examples showing that a stochastic monotonicity assumption is not necessary for such orderings. We indicate relations between dependence orderings and, variously, the asymptotic variance-reduction effect in Monte Carlo Markov chains, Cheeger constants, and positive dependence for Markov processes.

We compare two versions of a symmetric two-queue polling model with switchover times and setup times. The SI version has State-Independent setups, according to which the server sets up at the polled queue whether or not work is waiting there; and the SD version has State-Dependent setups, according to which the server sets up only when work is waiting at the polled queue. Naive intuition would lead one to believe that the SD version should perform better than the SI version. We characterize the difference in the expected waiting times of these two versions, and we uncover some surprising facts. In particular, we show that, regardless of the server utilization or the service-time distribution, the SD version performs (i) the same as, (ii) worse than, or (iii) better than its SI counterpart if the switchover and setup times are, respectively, (i) both constants, (ii) variable (i.e. non-deterministic) and constant, or (iii) constant and variable. Only (iii) is consistent with naive intuition.

Reciprocal pairs of continuous random variables on the line are considered, such that the density function of each is, to within a norming factor, the characteristic function of the other. The analogous reciprocal relationship between a discrete distribution on the line and a continuous distribution on the circle is also considered. A conjecture is made regarding infinite divisibility properties of such pairs of random variables. It is shown that the von Mises distribution is infinitely divisible for sufficiently small values of the concentration parameter.

We prove that, for Poisson transmission and recovery processes, the classic susceptible→infected→recovered (SIR) epidemic model of Kermack and McKendrick provides, for any given time t>0, a strict lower bound on the expected number of susceptibles and a strict upper bound on the expected number of recoveries in the general stochastic SIR epidemic. The proof is based on the recent message passing representation of SIR epidemics applied to a complete graph.

Epidemic models have generally assumed that the population mixes homogeneously. More realistic models can be obtained by dividing the population into sub-populations within which mixing is homogeneous but between which mixing is heterogeneous. We consider such a model for the general epidemic process and present a formulation which permits inroads to be made towards obtaining explicit solutions to the state probabilities.
