In 1923, H. C. T’an and O. Zdansky collected remains of an ankylosaurid dinosaur in the Late Cretaceous Wangshi Group of the Laiyang region, in eastern Shandong (China). Apart from a few caudal vertebrae, this material, which is kept at the Palaeontological Institution of the University of Uppsala (Sweden), was never described or figured. It includes a well-preserved sacrum with the attached right ilium and part of the presacral rod, caudal vertebrae, a left femur and a dermal scute. This material is referred to an ankylosaurid of the genus Pinacosaurus Gilmore, 1933, on the basis of the widely divergent ilium bearing a strong ventral ridge and of the slenderness of the femur. In the absence of cranial material, a specific attribution is difficult and the Uppsala material is referred to as Pinacosaurus cf. grangeri (P. grangeri being the only generally accepted species of Pinacosaurus). This is the first record of Pinacosaurus outside the Gobi Basin of Mongolia and northwestern China. In the Gobi Basin, Pinacosaurus has been reported only from the Djadokhta Formation or its equivalents, of supposed Campanian age, and it is suggested that at least the part of the Wangshi Group which yielded the Shandong Pinacosaurus may be of roughly the same age as the Djadokhta Formation.

Understanding variations in body size is essential for deciphering the response of an organism to its surrounding environmental conditions and its ecological adaptations. In modern environments, large marine animals are mostly found in cold waters. However, numerous parameters can influence body-size variations other than temperatures, such as oxygenation, nutrient availability, predation or physical disturbances by storms. Here, we investigate trilobite size variations in the Lower Ordovician Fezouata Shale deposited in a cold-water environment. Trilobite assemblages dominated by small- to normal-sized specimens that are a few centimetres in length are found in proximal and intermediate settings, while those comprising larger taxa more than 20 cm in length are found in the most distal environment of the Fezouata Shale. Drill core material from distal settings shows that sedimentary rocks hosting large trilobites preserved in situ are extensively bioturbated with a high diversity of trace fossils, indicating that oxygen and nutrients were available in this environment. In intermediate and shallow settings, bioturbation is less extensive and shallower in depth. The rarity of storm events (minimal physical disturbance) and the lack of predators in deep environments in comparison to shallower settings would also have helped trilobites attain larger body sizes. This highly resolved spatial study investigating the effects of numerous biotic and abiotic parameters on body size has wider implications for the understanding of size fluctuations over geological time.

Two completely dissimilar faunal changes occur between the Sunwaptan and Skullrockian Stages (Ptychaspid and Symphysurid ‘Biomeres’) in the uppermost Cambrian on the east Laurentian craton. An undolomitized section in the Little Falls Formation in Washington County, New York, shows a typical ‘biomere’ extinction, with highest Sunwaptan trilobites followed by the abrupt appearance of Cordylodus proavus Zone conodonts and the lowest post-extinction trilobites (Parakoldinioidia Endo) 5.0 m higher. This stage boundary interval is very condensed by comparison with coeval Great Basin and Texas sections. Approximately 70 km southwest, typical pre-extinction taxa (the catillicephalid Acheilops Ulrich and several dikelocephalid species) are shown for the first time to persist well beyond the extinction as they occur with middle C. proavus Zone conodonts (Clavohamulus elongatus or, more likely, Hirsutodontus simplex Subzone). The Ritchie Limestone member of the uppermost Little Falls Formation yields a succession of conodont faunas that spans the C. elongatus–H. simplex–Clavohamulus hintzei Subzones (middle–upper C. proavus Zone). These data prove that the trilobites are a relict fauna that persisted into the Symphysurina Zone of the Skullrockian Stage. The massive (burrow-churned), mollusc-dominated Ritchie Limestone, with the second Upper Cambrian cephalopod locality in east Laurentia, represents an inner-shelf refugium for Sunwaptan trilobites that has not been previously encountered. Final extinction of typical Sunwaptan clades is at least locally diachronous, and a simple, genus-based approach to trilobite biostratigraphy in the Cambrian–Ordovician boundary interval is untenable. The relict fauna appears to be distinct at the species level, so it is likely that a viable, species-based biostratigraphy can be developed. Teridontus gallicus Serpagli et al. 2008 is a synonym of T. nakamurai (Nogami, 1967), and T.? francisi Landing sp. nov., with a large base and tiny cusp, is a lower C. proavus Zone form. New trilobites are Acheilops olbermanni Westrop sp. nov. and Parakoldinioidia maddowae Westrop sp. nov. The lowest Ordovician ‘Gailor Dolomite’ is a junior synonym of the Tribes Hill Formation, and the Ritchie Limestone is assigned to the top of the terminal Cambrian Little Falls Formation.

The Ox Mountains granodiorite (western Ireland) is situated along the Fair Head—Clew Bay line, a major Caledonian structure. The pluton was emplaced synchronously with respect to deformation on a major strike-slip shear zone system and experienced a pervasive episode of sinistral shear. Remnants of magmatic state deformation such as phenocryst alignments and tiling fabrics are present. An early phase of strain partitioning produced sinistral offsets on internal contacts. These structures were overprinted by a solid state fabric characterized by crystal plastic deformation in feldspar and the operation of recovery processes during quartz deformation indicating temperatures in the range 450–500 °C. A sinistral shear band fabric is ubiquitous and its formation was enhanced by myrmekite production leading to the formation of fine-grained feldspar and quartz. Late deformation partitioning during further pluton cooling produced a conjugate shear zone system containing mylonites. Deformation within the Ox Mountains granodiorite provides important constraints on the nature of late Caledonian age mid-crustal deformation along the Highland Boundary fault. The pluton also provides exceptional examples of the range of structures that may form in a syntectonic pluton.

Two new genera and species of Middle Cambrian sphinctozoans, Jawonya gurumal and Wagima galbanyin, are described from the Tindall Limestone of the Daly Basin, Northern Territory, within continental platform successions of the northern Australian craton. They are ambisiphonate sebargasiids, coeval with the island-arc shelf fauna from the Ordian Stage of western New South Wales. Additionally, a new Early Cambrian (Atdabanian equivalent) species, ?Jawonya tiro, displaying some sphinctozoan and some archaeocyathan features, is documented from the Ajax Limestone of the Arrowie Basin, South Australia. It is tentatively regarded as the oldest known sphinctozoan, but raises the possibility of the derivation of sphinctozoans from archaeocyaths. A brief review charts the Early–Middle Palaeozoic history of the sphinctozoans. The use of filling tissue type as a family-level criterion in sphinctozoan classification needs some reappraisal, as some types are of secondary origin.

Recent detailed studies on the Batain nappes (northeast coast of Oman), which represent a special part of the so-called ‘Oman Exotics’, have led to a better understanding of the Neotethyan geo-dynamic evolution. The Batain Exotics bear witness to volcanic activity, sea-level changes, tectonic instability, rifting and oceanization along the Eastern Oman margin during Late Palaeozoic and Mesozoic times. They allow definition of the Batain basin as an aborted Permian branch of Neotethys. This marine basin was created in Early Permian times extending southward to the East African/ Madagascar region and was linked to the Karoo rift system. The presented revised classification of the Batain nappes considers the Batain basin to be no longer a part of the Hawasina basin and the Neotethyan margin proper. We attribute the Batain basin to a Mozambique–Somali–Masirah rift system (Somoma). This system started in Early Permian, times, creating a marine basin between Arabia and India/Madagascar; rifting in the Late Triassic and oceanization during Late Jurassic times led to the separation of East Gondwana.

The Neoproterozoic metasediments of northwestern Scotland were deformed during the 470 Ma Grampian orogeny. Their pre-Ordovician history has proved difficult to elucidate, due to conflicting evidence. While the stratigraphic record indicates deposition in intracontinental rift basins associated with the break-up of Rodinia, isotopic dates in the range 870–780 Ma from granite gneiss, early pegmatites and metamorphic garnets have been attributed to a Neoproterozoic ‘Knoydartian’ orogeny. Stratigraphic evidence for this orogeny is lacking, and it is not represented elsewhere on the Laurentian margin. An alternative interpretation is that much of the Knoydartian history can be related to extensional, not collisional processes. Specifically, it has been proposed that the 870 Ma West Highland granite gneiss that is intruded into the Moine rocks of northwestern Scotland is not the product of synorogenic anatexis but represents a suite of granite sheets that were generated during extensional rifting and were subsequently deformed and gneissified during the Grampian orogeny. This contribution presents numerical models of extension-related anatexis to test this hypothesis.

We first develop a methodology to estimate stretch values and the duration of extension and thermal subsidence for the Moine rift basins. A thermal model is then constructed for these basins using transient finite element techniques. This model shows that lithospheric extension sufficient to produce major rift basins, even if they are filled with feldspathic sediment with Neoproterozoic heat production characteristics, will not lead to crustal anatexis. However, a regional suite of mafic dykes in the more easterly (Loch Eil) Moine suggests that stretching led to decompression melting of the mantle. We model the effect of advecting heat into the extending lithosphere by the introduction of a modest volume of basaltic magma, and show that substantial granitic melt can be generated in the basement beneath the basin. The amount of anatexis varies with the locus of basalt intrusion. Some 30% more granite is generated by dykes emplaced along basin-bounding faults than by either dykes emplaced beneath the centre of the basin, or by underplating sills. The spatial distributions of the West Highland gneiss and of the mafic suite are compatible with this finding. There is clear field evidence that the protolith of the West Highland gneiss consisted of a suite of pre-tectonic granite sheets, and our modelling demonstrates that they could have been generated during the later stages of extensional rifting and Moine sedimentation.

The graptolite biozonation of the Wenlock Series in the Builth Wells district is reassessed. The graptolite fauna is dominated by relatively few, but variable, species of Monograptus s.s., Pristiograptus and Monoclimacis. These species are mostly long-ranging and are of limited biostratigraphical use. Biozonation is based largely on the relatively rare cyrtograptids. The lower Wenlock Series of the district comprises the widely recognized centrifugus, murchisoni and riccartonensis biozones. The middle to upper Wenlock biostratigraphy differs from that previously recognized in the UK. Above the riccartonensis Biozone, dubius, rigidus and lundgreni biozones are distinguished. Separate flexilis and ellesae biozones are not recognized: Monograptus flexilis appears earlier than, then largely co-exists with, Cyrtograptus rigidus s.l.; while Cyrtograptus ellesae appears later than Cyrtograptus lundgreni. The uppermost Wenlock nassa–ludensis Biozone is sparsely fossiliferous; its subdivision has not proved possible. This revised biostratigraphical scheme for the Wenlock Series of the Builth Wells district suggests that the Sheinwoodian–Homerian boundary, as defined in the Welsh Borderland, might occur within, rather than at the base of, the lundgreni Biozone. However, difficulties in correlation with other Wenlock sequences, particularly overseas, suggest significant biofacies control, with the Wenlock seas of the Builth Wells district appearing to have been periodically inhospitable to graptolites.

The Toro Complex is one of the Pan-African Older Granites of Nigeria, first described as a reversely zoned pluton made of a central dioritic mass surrounded by a broad granitic rim. It has been thoroughly reinvestigated both from the petrographic and structural points of view, with the help of systematic anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) measurements. The granite main body is a hornblende–biotite porphyritic monzogranite characterized by an early submagmatic fabric displaying a concentric pattern of foliations and west plunging lineations (stage 1). This fabric is overprinted by a later one due to solid-state strain along north-south subvertical dextral shear zones (stage 2). In the vicinity of the diorite, an evengrained granite displays magmatic structures that are contemporaneous with this strike-slip event. The diorite–granite contact is a complex zone where field, petrographic and geochemical data enable recognition of the effects of mixing and mingling between a mafic and a felsic magma. Tonalites cropping out within this contact zone are interpreted as hybrid rocks. The reverse zonation of the diorite itself is also the result of some hybridization process. Magmatic interactions mainly resulted from in situ infiltration of granitic liquid into the dioritic mass. The detailed history of this bimodal intrusion began with the emplacement of the granitic magma acquiring a first stage fabric. Before full crystallization of the granitic core, intrusion of the dioritic magma permitted reheating of the granitic magma that then crystallized with specific structural characters. The second stage structures, whether characterized by magmatic fabric near the diorite or by solid-state strain features in north–south shear zones elsewhere in the granite, are related to late Pan-African dextral strike-slip tectonics in the basement of northern Nigeria. The bimodal Toro Complex is therefore considered as a late Pan-African syntectonic pluton.

A preliminary summary of the lower Visean to uppermost Moscovian (Carboniferous) conodont succession and biostratigraphy of the Dianzishang section in Zhenning, Guizhou, South China is presented. Eleven conodont zones, in ascending order, can be recognized: Gnathodus praebilineatus, Gnathodus bilineatus, Lochriea ziegleri, Declinognathodus noduliferus, Neognathodus symmetricus, ‘Streptognathodus’ expansus (primitive form), ‘Streptognathodus’ expansus, Mesogondolella donbassica – Mesogondolella clarki, Idiognathodus podolskensis, Swadelina fauna and Idiognathodus swadei zones. The first occurrences of Lochriea ziegleri at the base of the Serpukhovian Stage, Declinognathodus noduliferus noduliferus at the base of the Bashkirian Stage and ‘Streptognathodus’ expansus at the base of the Moscovian Stage are recognized. The definitions of these stage boundaries, as well as that of the base of the Kasimovian Stage are discussed. Correlations with the Naqing section in South China, Russian and North American sections, as well as other important sections in the world, are considered.

The drift succession in east-central Ireland is the result of a series of ice movements spreading from major centres of dispersion within theIrish Sea Basin and over the north-central Irish plain, and from local mountain sources. These glaciations have produced laterally and vertically complex sequences of deposits. The large-scale events influenced almost the entire area; problems of correlation emerge when considering episodes of relatively restricted extent such as those associated with upland ice-caps in the S and the hitherto unreported readvances which interrupted the withdrawalof ice-sheets across the northern part of the region under examination. Thetask of assigning the older units to particular Quaternary cold stages is frustrated by the absence of interstratified organic horizons. Two possible models of glaciation are considered: one may be regarded as ‘traditional’; the other requires a much shorter period of time by assuming that the stratigraphy records differences in the relative strengths of essentially contemporaneous ice-masses.

The Carboniferous fossil plants from the Severn Coalfield are described for the first time. They indicate a late Westphalian D age for these strata (Lobatopteris vestita Biozone) and are clearly similar to floras reported from the Forest of Dean Coalfield. There is also evidence that they can be correlated with the Grovesend Beds in the eastern part of the South Wales Coalfield. It seems that the start of sedimentation in the Forest of Dean and Severn coalfields is related to Leonian (late Hercynian) earth movements.

In this review of the Downtonian Eurypterida of Perton, Here-fordshire, a new genus Salteropterus and a new family Hugh-milleriidae are proposed, and the family Pterygotidae accordingly emended. Hitherto unknown morphological details of the Perton Eurypterida are described and discussed.

The Maures Massif forms an important piece of the southernmost part of the Variscan belt of western Europe. This massif exhibits high-grade bimodal felsic–basic volcanic complexes, a distinctive lithological feature documented elsewhere in similar domains of the European Variscides and referred to the Cambro-Ordovician extensional episode. Two major alkalic and tholeiitic compositional groups and subordinate transitional metabasites have been identified, occurring at several distinct horizons or in bimodal complexes. This chemical diversity is interpreted in terms of variable degrees of partial melting of progressively depleted mantle source(s), which experienced melting at different depths, from garnet to spinel stability domains, during a progressive mantle upwelling associated with intracontinental rifting. This setting is reinforced by the presence of metabasites with compositions similar to continental flood basalts, showing slightly humped REE patterns, and interpreted as resulting from the melting of a partially depleted source at a relatively low degree of melting, in the garnet–spinel transition zone. The metafelsites from the tholeiitic bimodal complex exhibit the distinctive major and trace element characteristics of A-type rhyolites. Their elemental variations are consistent with fractional crystallization of major and accessory phases, but some discontinuous REE profiles result from a hydrothermal fractionation mechanism. The modelling of common anhydrous fractionating assemblages suggests that these A-type compositions may be derived from the associated tholeiites by extensive degrees of fractionation (90 %) with some continental crust involvement, or by anhydrous partial melting (∼30 %) of an underplated mafic parent of tholeiitic composition. The bimodal character of the Late Cambrian Maures magmatism, together with the chemistry of the various metabasites and metafelsites, suggests plume-induced intracontinental magmatic activity, resulting in lithospheric thinning prior to the onset of rifting and break-up of the Palaeozoic continental lithosphere, at this northern margin of Gondwana.

Recent investigations indicate that three distinct lithostratigraphical units can be recognized in the Red and Norwich Crag deposits of the area around Aldeburgh and Orford, Suffolk. These effectively represent a refinement of a stratigraphy originally suggested by Prestwich in 1871. A lowermost coarse-grained shelly sand, the Red Crag Formation, rests on an eroded London Clay surface and is banked against the Pliocene Coralline Crag. The Red Crag Formation passes upwards into a fine-grained generally unfossiliferous well-sorted sand, the Chillesford Sand Member, which overlaps the Red Crag Formation to rest directly on the Coralline Crag. The Chillesford Clay Member is regarded as the lateral equivalent of the upper Chillesford Sand Member, the two members together comprising the Norwich Crag Formation in this area. Sections that have been zoned palaeontologically may be integrated into this lithostratigraphical framework. These indicate that the Red Crag Formation correlates with the Pre-Ludhamian Stage, and the Chillesford Sand Member and the Chillesford Clay Member correlate with the Bramertonian Stage. Type sections are established for the three units described.

In an attempt to obtain information about garnet nucleation a series of eleven apparently homogeneous metamorphic rocks, from a small area near Mallaig, Inverness, Scotland, have been analysed to determine bulk chemical and modal compositions, garnet grain size and number of garnet crystals occurring in unit volume of rock (N). No correlation of N with any function of chemical and modal compositions could be found, and it is therefore concluded that, if the influence of trace components can be neglected, externally imposed factors (for example, time-temperature variation) or internal physical factors (for example, the surface area of the rock just prior to garnet formation) must exert a controlling influence on garnet nucleation. It was found, however, that in each specimen, there was a preferred crystal radius and the relative frequency of occurrence about this preferred value was constant for all samples studied. Preliminary comparison with other systems, investigated by the authors, suggested that the nature of this relationship may provide evidence of the conditions under which these rocks recrystallized.

Palaeomagnetic data from mid to late Palaeozoic rocks are potentially valuable for testing models of the assembly of Spitsbergen and for determining the palaeo-position of parts of Spitsbergen relative to the major tectonic elements that comprised the Old Red Continent. Fine-grained red sandstones from the Tournaisian to Namurian Billefjorden Group, collected by members of Cambridge Spitsbergen expeditions, were subjected to stepwise chemical and thermal demagnetization. The characteristic magnetization is found in normal and reverse polarities and corresponds to a pole position at 23° S, 332 °E, dp = 5.7°, dm = 10.5°, which is near an early Carboniferous pole computed for the Baltic Shield-Russian Platform (Baltica). When compared to Laurentia (North America) in the context of the revised Mauch Chunk palaeomagnetic study, Spitsbergen falls a few degrees south of the Bullard reconstruction but the error of the determination of the palaeolatitude overlaps with this position. Therefore relative motion between any part of Spitsbergen and Laurentia and Baltica during the Carboniferous is not resolved.

Heavy minerals in Ordovician successions in western Ireland record, in the Upper Arenig Sheeffry Formation, the erosion of an ophiolite/island arc complex. The appearance of staurolite and garnet at a basin-wide horizon in the Lower Llanvirn Upper Derrylea Formation signals the unroofing of the Dalradian metamorphic complex. Parts of the Ordovician sequence on Inishturk and in two small inliers are correlated with the standard sequence with unexpected results. The garnet-, sillimanite-, and staurolite-bearing Letter Formation correlates with the Upper Derrylea Formation and, on Inishturk, heavy minerals in south-younging turbidites reveal a sinistral ramp zone, that places the Sheeffry Formation structurally above and to the south of the younger Derrylea Formation.

Blebs of anorthoclase-phyric purple rock, usually up to 10 cm but occasionally up to 30 cm in diameter, occur in trachyte lavas of the volcanoes Kilombe and Kapkut, Kenya. The blebs have bulbous outlines and chilled margins and are therefore considered to have been liquid when incorporated in the trachyte. Chemically similar to the benmoreites of Hawaii, Skye and the southern Kenya Rift Valley, they bridge a gap in an otherwise complete sequence of lavas from basalt to trachyte. The failure of benmoreite to erupt as a lava is attributed to viscosity reaching a maximum among intermediate lavas.

There are three main inliers of Silurian rocks in the Pentland Hills:—

(1) Lyne Water—North Esk Reservoir Inlier, which includes the Gutterford Burn section with the well-known Eurypterid and Starfish beds and the Deerhope and North Esk sections in which there is a passage upwards into red beds often referred to as “Downtonian”.

(2) Bavelaw Castle Inlier, with beds of an age similar to those in the Gutterford Burn.

(3) Loganlee Reservoir Inlier, yielding a few graptolites in strata partly corresponding with those of the Bavelaw Castle Inlier, and with an important assemblage of Silurian corals in the overlying Lower Old Red Sandstone conglomerate.
