Summary. A fossil siphonophorid is described from the Palaeozoic rocks of the Enticho area in Tigrai, northern Ethiopia. This is the first fauna to be described from these rocks and the evidence supports an Ordovician age for the associated glacial rocks. Detailed lithostratigraphy of the area is also discussed.

The existence of pillow lavas, black shales, and cherts in North Glen Sannox, Arran, has been known since W. Gunn carried out the detailed mapping of this part of the island for the Geological Survey in 1899. A description of these rocks, in which that author makes the suggestion, not since seriously disputed, that they are of probable Arenig age (Gunn, 1900) was first published in the Summary of Progress for 1899. Full accounts, to which the reader is referred for details not repeated in the present paper, were later given by Gunn (1903, 1905) and by Tyrrell (1928).

The Sestola Vidiciatico tectonic Unit (SVU) accommodated the early Miocene convergence between the subducting Adriatic plate and the overriding Ligurian prism, and has been interpreted as a field analogue for the shallow portion of subduction megathrusts. The SVU incorporated sediments shortly after their deposition and was active down to burial depth corresponding to temperatures around 150 °C. Here, we describe the internal architecture of the basal thrust fault of the SVU through a multi-scale structural analysis and investigate the evolution of the deformation mechanisms with increasing burial depth. At shallow depth, the thrust developed in poorly lithified sediments which deformed by particulate flow. With increasing depth and lithification of sediments, deformation was accommodated in a meter scale, heterogeneous fault zone, including multiple strands of crack-and-seal shear veins, associated with minor distributed shearing in clay-rich domains and pressure solution. In the last stage, slip localized along a sharp, 20 cm thick shear vein, deactivating the fault zone towards the footwall. The widespread formation of crack-and-seal shear veins since the first stages of lithification indicates that failure along the thrust occurred at high fluid pressure and low differential stress already at shallow depth. Progressive shear localization occurs in the last phases of deformation, at temperatures typical of the transition to the seismogenic zone in active megathrusts.

Summary. The large number of species assigned to Triarthrus Green are here allocated to three genera - ten species to a revised Triarthrus Green (late Caradoc-Ashgill), thirteen species to a revised Porterfieldia Cooper (Arenig-Llandeilo), and five species to Bienvillia Clark (Tremadoc-Arenig). Triarthrus lacks an anterior border furrow on the cranidium; this furrow is confined to the yoked cheeks. Both Porterfieldia and Bienvillia have an anterior border furrow on the cranidium; these genera are distinguished primarily on the length of the preglabellar field.

Comments are given on a number of papers dealing with principles and procedure in stratigraphic classification which have appeared in British journals during 1963–65. It is emphasized that a clear distinction should be made between biostratigraphic units—bodies of rock strata characterized by certain palaeontological features and bounded by the limits of known occurrence of such features—and chronostratigraphic units—bodies of rock strata characterized by representing the rocks formed during certain time-spans of earth history and bounded above and below by isochronous surfaces. Biostratigraphic zones and the chronostratigraphic terms chronozone and stage are discussed.

The specimen is identified as the partial cranium of a nodosaurid ankylosaur (Ornithischia: Thyreophora) on the basis of the presence of bone which is fused to the dorsal surface of the skull and has secondarily closed the upper temporal fenestrae. The only unequivocally nodosaurid material recovered from the Isle of Wight to date comes from Wealden facies, and has been referred to the genus Polacanthus; it is considered highly probable that this new skull is referable to the same genus. Despite having undergone abrasion, through post-emergence water-rolling, the skull and cranial walls have proved to be relatively informative of the general anatomy of the braincase and the neural and vascular anatomy of this part of the head. The anatomy of the braincase of most ankylosaurs (with the notable exception of the juvenile specimens of the ankylosaurid Pinacosaurus) is surprisingly poorly known, despite the relative abundance of cranial material in North American and Asian collections.

The cranial neural and vascular anatomy is well shown in this specimen and enables the first detailed description of nodosaurid endocranial structures. The general form of the brain can be outlined from the structure of the endocast and the principal lobes can be identified; the majority of the cranial nerves have been identified, and a significant component of the associated vascular system is also visible. In most respects the endocast shows a neural anatomy which is common to that known in most dinosaurs. When compared to their nearest relatives, the ankylosaurid ankylosaurs (Euoplocephalus), the nodosaurid endocranial cast shows a more pronounced cerebral flexure, a forebrain which is broader and more expanded dorsally, and a more prominent cerebellum (although there is no evidence for a floccular lobe); there are minor differences in the arrangement of the cranial nerves, and the dorsal portions of the vascular system are better shown.

Because of erosion, the olfactory lobes of this specimen of cf. Polacanthus are not preserved, and cannot be compared to those of ankylosaurid ankylosaurs; the latter are unusual in the strong separation of the lobes (reflected in the divergent olfactory stalks); this feature may be associated with the very complex passages within the nasal region of the skull, which are lacking in the nodosaurids described to date.

Devonian Antiarchi in China are chiefly distributed in the S and W of the country. They are represented by 17 genera and more than 26 species, of which three genera are cosmopolitan, namely Asterolepis, Bothriolepis and Remigolepis. The early Devonian Antiarchi fauna, Yunnanolepis, Phymolepis, Zhanjilepis, is an East Asiatic fauna. The middle and late Devonian faunas are essentially endemic and associated with few cosmopolitan elements, their geological ages, however, are different from those of the cosmopolitan antiarch taxa elsewhere. As considered in the present study, six main antiarch assemblages occur: (1) Yunnanolepis-Qujinolepis assemblage (Lower Devonian), (2) Xichonolepis-Wudinolepis assemblage (Eifelian), (3) Hunanolepis tieni-Bothriolepis sinensis assemblage (Givetian), (4) Bothriolepis kwangtungensis-Bothriolepis lochangensis assemblage (Givetian), (5) Remigolepis spp. assemblages (Frasnian-Famennian), (6) Sinolepis-Asterolepis sinensis assemblage (Famennian).

The following paper is an attempt to contribute to the solution of the problem of mountain building. It is here suggested that the folding of mountain ranges may be produced by the frictional drag of moving portions of the asthenosphere, and that these movements may be convective and result from its unequal heating by radio-active elements.

A structural analysis of the cliffs and one pit section in Pleistocene deposits at Weybourne has shown one major phase of ice movement only. Ice moving from approximately 210 degrees caused the disturbance of the upper part of the Chalk (together with the overlying Weybourne Crag) and the deformation and deposition of a chalky-boulder-clay, thought to be equivalent to the Lowestoft till.

We report on the newly discovered almandine garnet phenocrysts in rhyolitic ignimbrites (Sukhda Tuff) in the Precambrian Churtela Shale Formation of the Chhattisgarh Supergroup in central India. SHRIMP ages of igneous zircon from the ignimbrites range from 990 Ma to 1020 Ma. These ignimbrites exhibit characteristic eutaxitic texture with compacted curvilinear glass shards with triple junctions. Quartz (commonly embayed; bluish cathodoluminescence) and albite (altered but retaining ghosts of twinning) are common phenocrysts; others are apatite, ilmenite, rutile, magnetite, zircon, monazite and garnet. There are no metamorphic or granitic xenoliths in the ignimbrites. Garnet grains occur as isolated broken isotropic crystals with sharp or corroded boundaries in a very fine-grained groundmass of volcanic ash that consists principally of albite, quartz, magnetite and glass. They do not have any systematically distributed inclusions. A few have penetratively intergrown phenocrysts of apatite, ilmenite, rutile and zircon, which we interpret as subophitic texture. Extensive SEM-BSE imaging of more than 100 grains and electron microprobe traverses across about 30 grains showed no zoning or systematic compositional variability. Common (metamorphic) garnets are usually zoned with respect to Fe–Mg–Mn and typically have mineral inclusions. We infer, therefore, that these observed garnets are not metamorphic xenocrysts. The average major oxide composition of analysed garnets from five different horizons within the Sukhda Tuff, spanning approximately 300 m of the stratigraphic section, have very small standard deviation for each element, which is suggestive of a single magmatic source. Phenocrysts of quartz, including those in contact with coexisting garnets, show blue scanning electron CL, indicating rapid cooling from high temperature; this suggests that adjacent coexisting garnets are not slowly cooled restites. We conclude, on the basis of texture, mineral chemistry and absence of any indicative xenoliths or xenocrysts, that these almandine garnets (Al78.7Py12.3Gr7.4Sp1.6) are phenocrysts within the Sukhda Tuff. Almandine of such composition is stable under high pressure. We infer that almandine crystallized at lower crustal depths in a magma that ascended very rapidly and may have erupted explosively.

The absence of a sedimentary record on large cratonic areas often prevents the reconstruction of the history of their vertical movements. The Reguibat Rise, belonging to the West African Craton, is typically a large basement high, whose Meso-Cenozoic history is poorly known because of the extreme reduction of this sedimentary record. In this paper we present the first thermochronological data from the centre of the Reguibat Rise, and combine them with the geometry of the sedimentary formations in the adjoining Tindouf and Taoudeni basins situated north and south, respectively. Fission track analysis on apatite yields ages from 256±21 Ma to 139±8 Ma, and 120±10 Ma by (U–Th)/He dating. Two competing scenarios are tested based on these data with thermal history modelling. We favour the scenario that includes a Late Jurassic/Early Cretaceous cooling of the samples, based on stratigraphical constraints and the thermochronological results. We then propose a new model for the evolution of this region and reveal the occurrence of a previously unknown major exhumation event at the Jurassic/Cretaceous transition accounting for the main present-day structures.

The Vendian–Silurian succession from a series of boreholes in northeast Germany has been petrographically and geochemically investigated. Evidence suggests that the more northerly Vendian and Cambrian succession was deposited on a craton which became increasingly unstable in Ordovician times. Similarly, the Ordovician-age succession deposited in the Rügen area indicates a strongly active continental margin tectonic setting for the same period. By Silurian times the region was once more relatively tectonically quiescent. Although complete closure of the Tornquist Sea was not complete until latest Silurian times, the major changes in tectonic regime in the Eastern Avalonia/Baltica area recorded from the Ordovician suggest that a significant degree of closure occurred during this time.

The Bengbu area in the southeastern North China Craton (NCC) consists predominantly of Archean–Palaeoproterozoic (gneissic) granitoids with minor supracrustal rocks (the Fengyang and Wuhe groups). This study presents new zircon laser ablation – inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry U–Pb and Lu–Hf isotopic data and trace-element contents for these granitoids, which improve understanding the Archean–Palaeoproterozoic crustal evolution of the NCC. Magmatic zircon U–Pb data reveal that zircons in the (gneissic) granitoids were generated by multi-stage events at 2.93, 2.73, 2.53–2.52 and 2.18–2.13 Ga. Metamorphic zircon U–Pb data obtained from these rocks show two distinct metamorphic ages of 2.49–2.52 and 1.84 Ga, suggesting that the Bengbu area experienced a regional metamorphic event at the end of the Neoarchean Era and encountered reworking by a tectonothermal event associated with the formation of the Palaeoproterozoic Jiao-Liao-Ji Belt. Trace-element compositions of magmatic zircons reveal the highest Ti concentrations (8.08±3.38 ppm) and growth temperatures (718±44 °C) for the zircons aged 2.13–2.17 Ga and an increase in zircon U/Yb ratios from 2.93 Ga (0.34±0.12) through 2.73 Ga (0.96±0.42) to 2.53 Ga (1.05±0.46), but an evident decrease at 2.17–2.13 Ga (0.61±0.40 ppm). Similar Palaeoarchean xenocrystic and detrital zircons with negative ɛHf(t) values, late Mesoarchean magmatic zircons with juvenile Hf isotopic features, early Neoarchean magmatic zircons with model ages of 2.9–3.0 Ga, and two regional metamorphic events at 2.52–2.48 and 1.88–1.80 Ga in the Bengbu and Jiaobei areas indicate a Palaeoarchean–Mesoarchean micro-continent entrained in the Jiao-Liao-Ji Belt at the southeastern NCC.

It has been suggested that the Southern Uplands fault of Scotland does not continue across central and western Ireland. Published geophysical evidence, however, strongly suggests that the fault does continue, under the Carboniferous cover, at least as far as the neighbourhood of Galway.

The Ashgillian as the name for the uppermost series of the Ordovician system was proposed by Marr in his address to the Geological Society in 1905, and subsequently further justified by him in a paper in the Geological Magazine in 1907.

Ophthalmosauridae is a clade of derived thunniform ichthyosaurs that are best known from Callovian (late Middle Jurassic) to Cenomanian-aged (Late Cretaceous) deposits in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Ophthalmosaurids arose prior to the Early–Middle Jurassic boundary, however, very little is known about their diversity and distribution in the earliest phase of their evolutionary history during the Aalenian–Bathonian (Middle Jurassic) interval. Here we describe new diagnostic ophthalmosaurid material from the Early Bajocian (Middle Jurassic) of Alaska. The specimen, UAMES 3411, is a partial disarticulated skull that was discovered in the Middle Jurassic Tuxedni Formation, which was deposited in shallow marine settings outboard of the then-accreting Wrangellia composite terrane. The new material is significant in that it is the first Jurassic ichthyosaur described from Alaska, one of the oldest ophthalmosaurids known and the only Middle Jurassic ophthalmosaurid described from the Northern Hemisphere. The new material adds to a rapidly growing data set on ophthalmosaurid diversity and suggests that the clade was geographically widespread by the Early Bajocian, very early in its evolutionary history.

In the Cadomian orogenic belt a package of glacigenic sedimentary deposits have been recently described in the Armorican Massif (Normandy, France). The Granville Tillite Member, the middle part of the upper Granville Formation, is late Ediacaran in age. Maximum depositional ages of the pre- and syn-glacial sedimentary deposits obtained by LA-ICP-MS U–Pb detrital zircon dating indicate a maximum age of 561 ± 3 Ma. Combined with geochronological data on the previously described glacial deposits in Cadomia, West Africa, Arabia and Iran, the Granville Tillite Member appears to represent an Upper Ediacaran Glacial Period in northern peri-Gondwana, clearly younger than the c. 580 Ma old Gaskiers glaciation. Detailed mapping and analysis of the depositional regime of two sections near the city of Granville are indicative of two independent glaciomarine lower and upper tillite deposits separated by a distinct conglomeratic marker horizon, evidently a massive gravel beach horizon deposited during an interglacial stage. Age spectra of detrital zircon U–Pb ages constrain the palaeogeographical position of the upper Granville Formation to the periphery of the West African Craton. Post-Gaskiers aged glaciations in Cadomia and in West Africa should be grouped into an Upper Ediacaran Glacial Period dated at c. 565 Ma. This glacial period seems not to be related to the negative δ13C Shuram–Wonoka anomaly. Sedimentary deposits formed during the Upper Ediacaran Glacial Period show a scattered distribution along the marginal orogens of the Gondwana supercontinent independent of palaeolatitude and are coupled most likely to contemporaneous orogenic processes and uplift.

Sediments from 6 localities showing negligible deformation are described from a generally strongly deformed formation of metasediments. The tidal flat facies include decimetre-thick tabular sands, interpreted as the flood tide storm deposits of subtidal to intertidal channels, as well as centimetre to millimetre thick, rippled and laminated sands and silts with gypsum pseudomorphs. The gypsum crystals grew at interfaces where more permeable, overlaid less permeable, sediment and then underwent partial solution before being replaced by ferroan calcite and quartz. The shallow marine facies are centimetre-thick rippled sands interbedded with muds, interpreted as storm sediments.

The palaeoecologic significance of post-Palaeozoic green calcareous algae is evaluated with what is known of the environments of comparable living algae. Here requirements and tolerances of temperature, bottomsediment, salinity and water-energy may be observed; depth is apparently significant only as it influences these. In the extinct algae, only a minority show clear taxonomic relationship to living algae, in palaeo-environmentsdeduced from independent evidence. Codiaceae and Dasycladales seem to have had environmental preferences like their living descendants, with preferredmicroenvironments in some genera.

The early Cambrian Period was a key interval in Earth history with regard to changes in both ocean chemistry and animal evolution. Although increasing ocean ventilation has been widely assumed to have played a key role in the rapid appearance, diversification and spatial colonization of early animals, this relationship is in fact not firmly established. Here, we report a high-resolution Fe-C-S-Al-Ti geochemical study of the lower Cambrian Wangjiaping section from an outer-shelf setting of the Yangtze Sea of South China. Iron speciation data document a redox transition from dominantly euxinic to ferruginous conditions during Cambrian Age 3 (c. 521–514 Ma). Interpretation of coexisting pyrite sulphur isotope (δ34Spy) records from Wangjiaping reveals relatively high marine sulphate availability at Wangjiaping. Furthermore, Wangjiaping section shows lower δ34Spy (‒2.1±5.3‰) and lower TOC (2.4±1.1%) values but higher positive correlation (R2 = 0.66, p < 0.01) between TOC and Fepy/FeHR relative to deeper sections reported previously, suggesting that euxinia developed at Wangjiaping in response to increasing marine productivity and organic matter-sinking fluxes. Our reconstructed redox conditions and fossils at Wangjiaping in comparison with previously well-studied strata in the inner-shelf Xiaotan and Shatan sections suggest that planktonic and benthic planktonic trilobites with bioturbation appeared in the oxic water columns, whereas only planktonic trilobites without bioturbation occurred within the anoxic (even euxinic) water columns during Cambrian Age 3. This finding indicates that spatial heterogeneity of redox conditions in the shelves had an important effect on early animal distribution in the Yangtze Block.
