The positioning of the Siluro-Devonian boundary is reviewed in the light of recent studies in both shelly and graptolitic facies in Europe and elsewhere. A case can be made for retaining the present position at the base of the Ludlow Bone Bed; but international opinion may demand a new standard section in the graptolitic facies, for example in Central Europe. In this event, it is suggested that a position at the base of the Monograptus uniformis Zone might prove the most widely satisfactory solution.

Volcanic and hypabyssal intrusive rocks of the Lower Palaeozoic English Lake District and Cross Fell inliers are elements of the Ordovician destructive plate margin system of microcontinental Avalonia. Two igneous sheets within the marine sedimentary Skiddaw Group of these inliers, previously described as lavas, are reinterpreted as sills. Sedimentary rocks enclosing these sills are of late Tremadoc-early Arenig (c. 493 Ma) and early Llanvirn (> 476 Ma) age, and breccias along the upper contacts of both were produced by steam explosivity and fluidization ahead of theadvancing tips of the intrusions. Previous interpretation of the breccias on the older sheet, as sediment deposited on the eroded top of a lava flow, implied an early Ordovician onset of arc magmatism. Such early magmatism would have been virtually coincident with the latest Tremadoc initiation of arc magmatism in Wales, but evidence for such a near synchronous response tothe putative onset of subduction is lacking. Respective onsets of magmatismwere probably separated by at least 17 m.y., and possibly by as much as 29 m.y. The apparent contemporaneity of mid and late Ordovician volcanic episodes in England and Wales, and similarities in extensional tectonic style, suggest that the two areas then were part of the same subduction system responding similarly to plate-scale magma-generating and tectonic processes. The early Ordovician situation is uncertain, but the absence of arc volcanic rocks of this age in the English Lake District suggests that this area and Wales are not tectonically juxtaposed elements of a former simple linear arc.

A set of sub-vertical curving fissures in a Pennine-derived lodgement till of Wolstonian age is described from Church Wilne near Derby. The fissures are at least 5 m long and curved (radius of curvature c. 3 m) in both vertical and horizontal planes, the concavity facing SE in the direction of regional ice movement. The origin of the structures is considered in the light of a review of modes of formation of structural discontinuities in till. Origins due to stress relief following excavation, desiccation, frost action, direct ice push, ice-core meltout, compaction of the substrate and shear failure are rejected. It is proposed that the fissures were produced by point loading of a frozen till surface by englacial (basal) boulders which provided periodically high compressive stresses and induced tensional failure. Analogous fissures occur in a Devensian lodgement till in the Wirral peninsula in Cheshire. It is concluded that curved fissure sets are localized features of lodgement tills but that they may be quite widely distributed.

A sequence of 11 tetracoral and conodont faunas, ranging from early Gedinnian to late Givetian, is recognized in the Lower and Middle Devonian limestones of New South Wales and Victoria. These faunas are not only important stratigraphically in eastern Australia, but also provide a basis for the correlation of the Australian Devonian with overseas stages. A table of correlation is given for the principal Devonian limestone sequences of New South Wales and Victoria.

Boreholes penetrating the inverted limb of a major fold in an allochthonous thrust sheet at Chillaton, West Devon, revealed highly fossiliferous strata spanning the Devonian–Carboniferous boundary in continuous succession. Details of the fauna, which includes conodonts, trilobites and ostracods, are given. Abundant siphonodellid conodonts allow the boundary to be determined according to the recommendations of the working group on the Devonian–Carboniferous boundary of the IUGS Commission on Stratigraphy. The nature of the imbricate zone beneath the Main Thrust, in which the succession is situated, is described. In addition, the fabrics associated with thrusts which cut the olistostromic succession lower in the tectonic unit are discussed.

The nature and arrangement of the “gills” of Eurypterids is not known in detail. A specimen of Slimonia in the Sedgwick Museum (No. A16237a), figured by Laurie (1893, pl. 1, figs. 5, 6, p. 514), seems to show their structure and segmental arrangement better than any described elsewhere. Owing to the rather poor quality of Laurie's figure and to the important conclusions which follow a study of this specimen, it has been thought fit to re-describe it here.

The Harsin–Sahneh serpentinized peridotites are widely exposed along the Zagros suture zone in the western region of Iran and are considered to represent remnants of Neo-Tethys oceanic lithosphere at the junction of the Arabian and Iran Plates. These rocks are characterized by low contents of SiO2 (38.8–43.5 wt%), Al2O3 (0.1–3.8 wt%), CaO (0.2–8.2 wt%) and TiO2 (< 1 wt%) and high MgO contents (31.1–46.0 wt%). Their enrichments of large ion lithophile elements and light rare earth elements, with high 87Sr/86Sr(i) values (0.7036–0.7109) and relatively high variations in their εNd(t) (–7.5 to +7.8) values, indicate that the Harsin–Sahneh peridotites were metasomatized by flux released from the oceanic subducting slab in an active margin. The chemical compositions and isotopic ratios of these rocks suggest that they were formed as residue of mid-oceanic ridge basalt in the lithosphere that was then subsequently re-melted and metasomatized in a supra-subduction zone system. The occurrence of both mid-oceanic ridge and supra-subduction zone-type peridotites suggests that the heterogeneity of the upper mantle may have occurred due to the different ratios of partial melting and melt–rock reaction processes in different tectonic settings within the Neo-Tethys realm. The Harsin–Sahneh peridotites provide a good explanation of multistage melt extraction as well as melt–rock and metasomatic reactions in the mantle sequence of the Zagros ophiolite complex.

The Almazán Basin (northern Spain) is a Tertiary basin, 90×45 km wide, located in the western part of the Iberian Chain. It is filled with folded Palaeogene (2500–3000 m thick) and horizontal Neogene (500 m) beds. From the study of a satellite image, more than 2300 lineaments have been identified in the Neogene horizontal rocks. Their absolute orientation maximum is 060–070, and relative maxima are 100–110 and 120–140. Some spatial variations in the regional trends can be observed: (1) Throughout the central part of the basin, the east–northeast trending lines are the most representative. (2) Near the eastern border of the Basin the northwest–southeast set (parallel to the trend of thrust and folds in the older rocks) is dominant. (3) In the northwestern part of the basin the northwest–southeast and WNW–ESE sets coexist with the main east–northeast set. The maximum density of lineaments is found along a WNW–ESE line that corresponds with the axis of maximum thickness for the Tertiary units. A detailed field study of fracturing at the outcrop scale (more than 2300 fractures measured) was carried out. The orientation distribution of lineaments coincides with the orientation of left-lateral faults at the outcrop scale, and differences are greater when considering all kinds of fractures in different sectors. The origin of fracturing at different scales in the Almazán Basin can be related to the Neogene stress field and the influence of previous structures: (1) The northwest–southeast set of fractures formed as a result of reactivation of older faults, inherited from the late Variscan fracturing. (2) The main ENE–WSW set of fractures corresponds to neoformed left-lateral joints and faults under the northeast–southwest Neogene compression, the dextral conjugate set of joints within this system (NNE–SSW) being much less developed.

The Glen Tilt Complex, one of the larger masses of the Newer Granites of the Central Highlands, is included in sheet 64 of the Geological Survey of Scotland. The greater part of this complex is a granite which is bounded on the south-west and southeast by an earlier series of intermediate and basic rocks. The granites described in this contribution are restricted to a small area at the south-eastern margin of the large granitic intrusion generally known as the Beinn Dearc granite. The smaller and independent intrusion of the Sron a ‘Chro’ granite and a number of smaller masses of granite associated with the marginal strip of diorites on the north-western side of Glen Tilt have also been examined. These small isolated areas appear to be contemporaneous with the intrusion of the main Beinn Dearc mass and have been intruded between the earlier diorites and the margin of the intrusion, a feature not uncommon in many of the other Scottish Newer Granites. A small independent mass of muscovite-biotite-granite intruded into quartz-mica-diorite occurs on Conlach Mhor. Although these rocks are completely isolated from both the biotite- and muscovite-biotite-granites of the main Beinn Dearc intrusion their essential similarity with the latter leaves no reasonable doubt of their common origin.

Studies that reveal detailed information about trilobite growth, particularly early developmental stages, are crucial for improving our understanding of the phylogenetic relationships within this iconic group of fossil arthropods. Here we document an essentially complete ontogeny of the trilobite Redlichia cf. versabunda from the Cambrian Series 2 (late Stage 4) Ramsay Limestone of Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, including some of the best-preserved protaspides (the earliest biomineralized trilobite larval stage) known for any Cambrian trilobite. These protaspid stages exhibit similar morphological characteristics to many other taxa within the Suborder Redlichiina, especially to closely related species such as Metaredlichia cylindrica from the early Cambrian period of China. Morphological patterns observed across early developmental stages of different groups within the Order Redlichiida are discussed. Although redlichiine protaspides exhibit similar overall morphologies, certain ontogenetic characters within this suborder have potential phylogenetic signal, with different superfamilies characterized by unique trait combinations in these early growth stages.

Shirley and Horsfield (1940) in describing the Carboniferous Limestone of the Castleton-Bradwell area in North Derbyshire submitted evidence that the richly fossiliferous rocks of B2 age, the “Castleton reef knoll limestones lie with strong unconformity on the D1-D2 limestones, being piled against steep slopes or cliffs of Mid-Carboniferous age of at least 550 feet. The Nun Low limestones of P age follow with a similar relationship to the Castleton Limestones”.

The Croghan Kinshelagh alkali granite intrudes a cleaved volcano-sedimentary sequenceon the border of counties Wicklow and Wexford in southeast Ireland. U-Pb dating of zircons fromthe granite indicate a mid-Caradoc emplacement age of 454 ± 1 Ma. The Duncannon Group hostrocks form the southwestern end of the Avoca Volcanic Belt, a Mid-Ordovician (Caradoc) sequenceof acid and intermediate lavas and volcaniclastics. Dolerite dykes intrude the granite; elsewhere in theregion dolerites are generally associated with volcanic rocks. The main, Dl deformation within theDuncannon Group rocks is manifest as a steep Dl cleavage generally regarded as a product of LateCaledonian regional deformation in southeast Ireland. The Croghan Kinshelagh granite showsstrong geochemical coherence with subalkaline varieties of the Caradoc volcanic rocks; relativelyhigh Th, Y, Nb and REE contents set it apart from any other known granite type in southeastIreland. Together with the geochemical evidence, the age determination of 454 Ma indicates that theCroghan Kinshelagh granite was generated and emplaced during Ordovician volcanism in southeastIreland. Volcanism was closely followed by penetrative deformation and emplacement of the granite.The intra-Ordovician deformation may have been a consequence of closure of the Iapetus Ocean ormore localized events such as accretion on the hanging wall of the subduction zone. The age of theCroghan Kinshelagh granite provides an important datum for Ordovician volcanism and subductionin southeast Ireland.

In the present communication I call attention to a Reptilian vertebra which does not appear to have received the notice it deserves, and also give a preliminary diagnosis of certain forms which I hope to describe more fully later on.

The results of a gravity survey of Islay indicate that, with respect to a local Bouguer anomaly datum of 260 g.u., a positive anomaly of 100 g.u. occurs over the Lewisian gneiss of the Rhinns of Islay, and, immediately to the E, a negative anomaly of —120 g.u. occurs S of Bowmore. Both anomalies trend N—E to S—W. The negative anomaly is interpreted as due to the presence of a structural basin occupied by a maximum 4600 m of Bowmore Sandstones and Dalradian meta-sediments. The boundary between the Lewisian gneiss and this basin is the Loch Indaal fault. At the head of Loch Indaal this fault bifurcates, one branch continuing north-eastwards as the Bonahaven fault, the other trending northwards as the Loch Gruinart fault, All the faults are considered to possess transcurrent components. The stratigraphic position of the Bowmore Sandstones is similar to that of the supposed Torridonian sediments of western Islay.

Numerous Variscan syntectonic calcite veins cross-cut Palaeozoic rocks in the Moravian Karst. A structural, petrographic and stable isotopic analysis of the calcite veins and a microthermometric study of fluid inclusions in these vein cements have been carried out to determine the origin of the Variscan fluids and their migration during burial and deformation. The isotopic parameters of white (older, more deformed) and rose (younger) calcites are: 87Sr/86Sr is between 0.7078 and 0.7082 (white) and 0.7086 (rose), δ18O is between +17.7 and +26.1 (white) and between +14.8 and +20.7 ‰ SMOW (rose), δ13C ranges from +0.1 to +2.5 (white) and from −0.3 to +1.6 ‰ V-PDB (rose). The isotopic signatures point to precipitation in an older fluid system buffered by the host rock (white calcites) and to an open, younger fluid-dominated system (rose calcites). Parent fluids (H2O–NaCl system) had salinities between 0.35 and 17.25 eq. wt % NaCl. The pressure-corrected and confined homogenization temperatures suggest formation of the calcite veins from a fluid with a temperature between 120 and 170 °C, a pressure of 300–880 bar at a depth between 2.1 and 3.2 km. The fluids were most likely confined to a particular sedimentary bed as a bed-scale fluid migration (white older calcite veins) or, later, to a pile of Palaeozoic sediments as a stratigraphically restricted fluid flow (rose younger calcite veins). The low temperatures and pressures during precipitation of calcites, which took place close to a peak of burial/deformation, confirm the distal position of the Moravian Karst region within the Variscan orogen.

Some years ago I published, with the late Professor T. Rupert Jones, F.R.S., a description of two small Limuloids referred to the genus Bellinurus, sent me by ray friend Dr. H. M. Ami (then of the Canadian Geological Survey), who obtained them from the Lower Carboniferous Marine Series on the Intercolonial Railway of Canada, in Colchester County, Nova Scotia (Geol. Mag., 1899,pp. 387–95, PI. XV, Figs. 2 and 3), under the specific name of B. B. grandævus. Fig. 2 was collected from the sixth cutting east of Riversdale Station and Fig. 3 from the third cutting east of Colnary River.

Oolitic ironstones are described from the early Cretaceous non-marine Wealden sediments of southeast England. The recognition of non-marine oolitic ironstones in the geological record is rare and, therefore, warrants further study. The oolitic ironstones described take two forms, named here type-I and type-2 ironstones.

Type-1 ironstones contain pisoids and ooids of berthierine together with sandstone fragments and detrital quartz grains. The pisoids (up to 0.5 cm in size) vary from subspherical to highly irregular. The smaller ooids (up to 1 mm in size) are generally ellipsoidal but strongly asymmetrical forms are also present. The form of these pisoids and ooids suggest that mechanical accretion was not the dominant mechanism controlling their formation. It is proposed that this ironstone type formed from the reworking and redeposition of local soil material.

Type-2 ironstones, of which only one unequivocal example has been studied, is composed of iron oxide ooids set in a detrital matrix. The ooids are most commonly regularly ellipsoidal and exhibit a decrease in iron at their centres. It is proposed here that the ooids suffered post-depositional iron depletion at their centres, in a similar fashion to that proposed for the recent Lake Chad oolites. There is no unequivocal evidence as to the origin of the ooids.

This study is important in that it shows that different ironstones can be formed by different processes essentially within the same environment. Comparison of non-marine oolitic ironstones with the better-developed marine examples should prove a valuable exercise.

1. Inselberge, which form striking features in the landscape of most of tropical Africa, have attracted the attention of many writers, and various theories have been advanced to explain their formation. Passarge (I) considered that desert conditions are the most favourable for their maintenance, as wind scour was believed to be a potent factor in the deepening of the hollows between them. Bornhardt (2) and Falconer (3) suggest that they may result from repeated cycles of pluvial erosion, due to normal crustal oscillations, and with this view Theile and Wilson agree (4). From a study of the inselberge in Nigeria, the writer will endeavour to show that the climate of the Sudan, with its alternate wet and dry seasons, is favourable to the production of inselberg landscape.

Theory based on the sphere as the ideal particle, fails to account satisfactorily for the concentration of solids observed in unconsolidated natural sands, which at the same time display a substantial degree of dimensional ordering of the particles. However, when the prolate spheroid of moderate axial ratio is substituted for the sphere, a theory which is satisfied by observation becomes possible, for the reason that equal spheroids can be regularly packed in both close and open ways. A spheroid assemblage of mixed open and close packings can retain a high degree of dimensional ordering of the constituent solids, yet have a relatively low particle concentration. Observations made on sandstones carefully selected for evidence of rapid cementation seem to bear out the theory as applied to natural sands. Clusters of grains resembling the open packings of equal spheroids are found in these sandstones to be uncommon but not rare, in accordance with the theory as thus far developed.

In 1881 Mr. J. W. Davis proposed the genus Anodontacanthus for certain straight spines resembling Pleuracanthus, but differing in the absence of the two rows of denticles. Three species are included:–A. acutus and oltusus, from the Coal-measures of Yorkshire, and A. fastigiatus, from the Blackband Ironstone of Carboniferous Limestone age at Loanhead, near Edinburgh.
