The lower Williamson Shale at Tryon Park, Rochester, New York State is unique in the co-occurrence of Stimulograptus clintonensis (Hall), previously recorded only from the middle Telychian, and Pterospathodus amorphognathoides amorphognathoides Walliser, previously recorded only from the upper Telychian (Cyrtograptus lapworthi Biozone and higher). These two co-occurring fossils are clearly providing contradictory ages for the lower Williamson Shale. The incorporation of chitinozoan data from both the Williamson and Willowvale shales does not support unequivocally either the graptolite- or conodont-derived biostratigraphy and thus the age of the lower Williamson Shale remains problematical.

CAPPING many of the hill-tops of the Buchan district of Aberdeenshire there are extensive spreads of gravel containing pebbles of white quartzite and of flint. Their north-western limit is on the Delgaty estate, near Turrifi, where, at an elevation of 350–400 feet, there is a small patch of quartzite gravel a mile and a half to the north-east of the town. Nearly eight miles to the south, on Windyhills, two miles north-east of Fyvie, a more extensive outlier occurs. These two patches are shown in Fig. 1. The Windyhills spread is nearly a square mile in area, and it occupies the summit of a low flat-topped ridgo at an elevation of 370–400 feet. Like the Delgaty gravels, it is evidently the remains of a deposit formerly much more extensive and reduced greatly in area by denudation. It consists mainly of white quartzite pebbles, flint pebbles, and white clayey sand, and its resemblance to the Delgaty gravels is so close that no doubt has been entertained that they belong to the same period and formation.

Trepostome bryozoan Dianulites borealis Astrova, 1965, the earliest known member of this genus, has been identified from the Early Ordovician of Severnaya Zemlya, Arctic Russia. This species developed hemispherical colonies which indicate that it lived on a relatively soft substrate with moderately low rates of sedimentation and erosion. The new record from Severnaya Zemlya expands the palaeogeographical distribution of Dianulites, known before from the Early Ordovician of Novaya Zemlya, Arctic Russia.

The well-exposed marine Eocene units from southwestern Patagonia, Argentina, contain useful information for reconstructing regional climate and oceanographic patterns in an area adjacent to the Drake Passage. The aim of this paper is to integrate dinoflagellate cyst data from three sections of the southwestern Austral Basin (Río Turbio Formation) to propose a zonation scheme, which can be applied to other southwestern Atlantic Ocean sites. Assemblages of organic walled dinoflagellate cysts have been analysed in different cropping-out sections and cores, showing the high potential of this fossil group as biostratigraphic markers. Comparison of dinoflagellate cyst events of the upper member of the Río Turbio Formation with calibrated biostratigraphic ranges in the Palaeogene South Pacific Ocean allowed us to date and correlate these sedimentary sections. The resulting zonation consists of four dinoflagellate cyst zones labelled RTF 1 to RTF 4, between the middle Lutetian and late Priabonian. As a final point, we applied dinoflagellate cyst species with importance as palaeoenvironmental markers to assess long-term climatic and oceanographic evolution for the area. This study shows that the endemic–Antarctic dinoflagellate cyst assemblage is dominant during the middle to late Eocene (RTF 1 to RTF 3), while a significant replacement of these taxa by cosmopolitan species characterizes the upper part of the upper member of the Río Turbio Formation (RTF 4). This turnover seems to be a consequence of changes in the ocean circulation patterns forced by deepening of the southern Atlantic gateways (the Drake Passage and the Tasman Gateway).

Cretaceous granites are widespread in the North Dabie orogen, Central China, but their emplacement sequence and mechanism are poorly known. The Tiantangzhai Complex in the North Dabie Complex is the largest Cretaceous granitic suite consisting of six individual intrusions. In this study, zircon U–Pb ages are used to constrain the crystallization and protolith ages of these intrusions. The Shigujian granite is a syn-tectonic intrusion with an age of 141 Ma. This granite was emplaced under a compressional regime. Oscillatory rims of zircons have yielded two peaks at 137±1 Ma and 125±1 Ma. The 137±1 Ma peak represents the beginning of orogenic extension and tectonic collapse, whereas the 125±1 Ma peak represents widespread granitic magmatism. Zircon cores have yielded concordant ages between 812 and 804 Ma, which indicate a crystallization age for the protolith. The Tiantangzhai granites show relatively high Sr contents and high La/Yb and Sr/Y ratios. The Shigujian granite has positive Eu anomalies resulting from partial melting of a plagioclase-rich source in an over-thickened crust. Correspondingly, in situ Lu–Hf analyses from zircons yield high negative εHf(t) values from −24.8 to −26.6, with two-stage Hf model ages from 2748±34 to 2864±40 Ma, suggesting that the magmas were dominantly derived from partial melting of middle to lower crustal rocks. The Dabie orogen underwent pervasive NW–SE extension at the beginning of the early Cretaceous associated with subduction of the Palaeo-Pacific plate beneath eastern China.

Sand grains enclosed in gypsum crystals which grew in otherwise uncemented sand commonly, either float in the gypsum, or, are arrayed in sand-bearing and sand-free zones in a manner which indicates that they were displaced during growth of the gypsum. Corroborative evidence of displacement of included sand grains is found in some sandy gypsum crystals from coastal sabkhas in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. In these crystals, dust particles which formerly coated the sand grains are strung out as festoons behind the grains and thus record the directions and extent of the displacement. The direction of displacement was outwards, normal to the traces of what had been former crystal faces. The displacement also involved some pivoting of elongate grains which now lie with their long axes in the direction of movement.

Conventional K—Ar age determinations are frequently discrepant. A major factor is the failure of rocks to conform to the basic simplifying assumptions made in the total fusion method. Many rocks incorporate initial argon with an isotopic composition different from the present atmosphere and others have not remained closed systems.By careful sampling and the application of isochron geochronometry more reliable and geologically acceptable K-Ar ages can be obtained. K-Ar step heating isochrons from Kenyan Miocene volcanic sanidines are used to illustrate the accumulating evidence for the presence in ancient rocks of initial argon with an isotope ratio unlike that of the modern atmosphere. Single whole rock total fusion K-Ar isochrons from the Olduvai basalt, Tanzania and the Upper basalts of Antrim are presented to illustrate a new version of the K-Ar isochron technique. Special circumstance multiple rock K-Ar isochrons from the Belfast section of the Antrim basalts and from an ignimbrite-ash flow unit in Bed I, Olduvai Gorge, are used in a further discussion of the general applicability and usefulness of K-Ar isochrons.

This preliminary note records two discoveries in the Ross of Mull. Kyanite is considerably more widespread in the Moine rocks than previous investigations have indicated. Where the kyanite-gneiss enters the thermal aureole of the granite, large andalusite paramorphs are formed from kyanite.

The occurrence of Barroisiceras within the top bed of the Zone of Holaster planus near Dover in Kent provides the first ammonite evidence for the position of the base of the Coniacian in the Chalk of England. Inoceramus cf. rotundatus occurs ½ m above the ‘Top Rock’.

A description of the Ingletonian Series is given, with special reference to the sedimentary structures which occur and their use in determining the nature of the folding of the beds; this is shown to be isoclinal. The age of the series is discussed, and it is considered to be in all probability Pre-Cambrian.

On several occasions during the War, officers on active service in the Near East have found time to collect a few fossils, some of which have been sent to the British Museum. In three cases these were remains of mammals, and these discoveries are of importance as indicating the existence of bone-bearing deposits in localities where they were previously unknown, and where, not improbably, they may prove to be as rich as the well-known bone-beds of Samos and Pikermi.

In contrast to the numerous excellently preserved arthropods, vertebrates and plants from the Mesozoic lacustrine fossil lagerstätten of northeastern China, which have calcium phosphate or organic skeletons, the preservation of taxa with a calcareous skeleton is fairly poor. Here we investigate, using a scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, the preservational modes of bivalves from the Jurassic Daohugou Fossil Beds of Inner Mongolia and the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation of eastern Liaoning. The Jurassic bivalve Ferganoconcha sibirica is preserved as strongly compressed composite moulds which contain remains of the organic periostracum. In the Yixian Formation, the bivalves Sphaerium anderssoni and Arguniella ventricosa occur as compacted internal, external or composite moulds or are preserved with a silicified shell, and rarely with a shell consisting of iron hydroxides, which had replaced pyrite during late diagenesis/weathering. Silicification produced partly fabric-replacive microcrystalline quartz and partly void-filling megaquartz crystals after the carbonate shell had been dissolved. Films of authigenic aluminosilicate minerals, partly secondarily silicified, cover the exterior and interior shell surfaces. Occasionally, early diagenetic pyrite crystals, now oxidized to iron hydroxides, filled shell cavities forming internal moulds and rarely replaced the bivalve shell. The poor preservation of the bivalves reflects the environment and water chemistry of these lakes, which were heavily influenced by volcanic processes. Frequent ash deposition and decomposition of volcanic glass particles created acidic and alkaline lake and interstitial waters, which led to early diagenetic formation of authigenic aluminosilicate minerals, ferruginous internal moulds, dissolution of shell carbonate and silicification of shells.

The Slieve League Peninsula of northwest Ireland lies on the western limb of a major orogenic strike-swing in which regional foliation trends have deviated from the northeast–southwest trends typical of much of Scotland, to west–east orientations. Across-strike coastal exposures on the western tip of the peninsula through Neoproterozoic Dalradian metasediments enable a detailed examination and analysis of the structural evolution of a Caledonian orogenic root zone which has been previously correlated with the Loch Awe Syncline of southwest Scotland. Minor structural development may be evaluated in terms of regional strain profiles and overprinting relationships. Over much of the area, a composite, steep northeast–southwest-trending S2–S3 foliation containing a gently southwest-plunging quartz mineral elongation lineation is the dominant fabric at outcrop, and is associated with MP2 almandine–amphibolite facies metamorphism. F2 folds are isoclinal with curvilinear hinges and similar geometry. They typically plunge steeply towards the southwest and display variable (dextral) or north-directed vergence, whilst minor F3 fold hinges plunge moderately towards the southwest and typically verge (sinistrally) towards the south. Major, composite D1–D3 tectonic slides are developed in the Argyll Group. Structural and stratigraphic relationships indicate that D1 induced large-scale reversals in younging across tectonic slides, resulting in reversals in subsequent F2 and F3 facing patterns. Tectonic sliding is associated with an intensification of strain demonstrated by increasingly intrafolial and curvilinear folding, together with extensional crenulations, sheared quartz pods and metre-scale asymmetric boudinage of metadolerites, all of which indicate dextral (D2) and sinistral (D3) shear. After unfolding subsequent folds (F4), this corresponds to top-to-the-north (D2) and top-to-the-south (D3) translations. D4 results in regionally northwest-verging structures, with minor crenulations and the S4 cleavage transecting fold hinges in an anticlockwise sense, suggesting a dextral component of deformation. The detailed kinematic data indicate that the overall geometry of this western, deep-level arm of the root zone is not a product of the classic mushrooming fountain of nappes model, but rather major interference between consistent northerly directed D2 thrusting and a later phase of southeast-directed (D3) retrocharriage (‘back-folding’) which intensifies towards the south.

Unusual single kink-band sets in calcareous slates are described and their mechanism of formation discussed. Regional inferences are drawn concerning Armorican strike-slip movements.

The Chalk from Cop-point, near Folkestone, to Walmer in Kent, has been so well described by Mr. W. Phillips, that I need do little more than allude to his paper, in reference to the divisions of the Chalk in East Kent; but in a notice of the Isle of Thanet by the Rev. W. D. Conybeare, this gentleman, from the absence of flints in the Chalk near Margate, was led erroneously to suppose it to belong to the lower division, and it was not till 1865 that this error was exposed in a paper on the Chalk of the Isle of Thanet by Mr. W. Whitaker, F.G.S., of the Geological Survey, the latter gentleman pointed out the true position of the Margate Chalk, as that of the highest Chalk, and superior to that with numerous flints seen at Ramsgate; and he there remarked, “Very likely the Broadstairs Chalk will turn out to be the upper part of the ‘Chalk with many Flints’ (Phillips) of the cliffs from Walmer Castle to Dover Castle, and which is there the highest division; so that the Isle of Thanet section would be the upward continuation of that given by Mr. Phillips.”

Two boreholes in the Vale of Glamorgan have provided new data on the nature of the early Dinantian (Courceyan) transgression in South Wales. This transgression is manifested by the transition from the largely fluviatile, late Devonian, Upper Old Red Sandstone (Quartz Conglomerate Group) to the predominantly marine, early Dinantian, Lower Limestone Shale Group. The marine sequence comprises five shoaling upwards cycles, constructed from a suite of sedimentary lithofacies which record deposition in environments ranging from coastal plain, peritidal, lagoon, barrier and embayment to subtidal, open marine shelf. Each cycle represents a pulse of the transgression, and each successive pulse appears to have been larger than the preceding one, introducing progressively less restricted and more distal marine environments.

Thirty-seven samples were processed for palynological analysis. Miospore biozonation supports the cycle correlations between the two boreholes, suggested by the sedimentary event stratigraphy. Detrital kerogens from the samples comprise both terrestrially derived and marine types in varying proportions. Each kerogen type is described as well as the size, sorting and preservation of each assemblage. A palynofacies profile is presented for eachof the depositional environments recognized.

Based on outcrop studies and borehole data, six bedded lithofacies and two reef types are recognized within the Much Wenlock Limestone Formation of the English Midlands and Welsh Borderland. The lithofacies are interpreted to represent a series of carbonate shelf environments extending from below storm wave-base to well above fair weather wave-base. In common with many other shallow marine carbonate depositional systems, the principal controls on lithofacies development were hydrodynamic energy, the supply of fine clastic sediment, and patterns of colonization of the sea floor by organisms. Reef distribution was probably controlled by the nature of the substrate, water circulation, and rate of siliciclastic sedimentation. A depositional model is proposed which incorporates biostratigraphical evidence suggesting that the formation youngs to the west on the northern part of the shelf. Deposition of the Much Wenlock Limestone Formation there began in the West Midlands, where 12 m of microbial limestone were lain down in a mid-shelf setting during a local regression. The remainder of the shelf was dominated by low energy siliciclastic deposition at that time. The West Midlands then returned to somewhat deeper water, lower energy deposition, the resulting impure calcareous muds becoming diagenetically changed into the nodular limestone lithofacies. That lithofacies is commonly overlain successively by the interbedded limestone and silty mudstone lithofacies, and then the crinoidal grainstone lithofacies. This vertical lithofacies sequence is uniform over the entire northern part of the shelf, reflecting a gradual decrease in water depth. The crinoidal grainstone lithofacies was deposited as a wave-influenced carbonate sandbody which prograded from east to west. Lithofacies sequences on the southern shelf are laterally impersistent, probably due to greater tectonic instability and topographical variablity.

Quantitative Miocene climate and vegetation data from the Siwalik succession of western Nepal indicate that the development of the Indian summer monsoon has had an impact, though in part, on vegetation changes. The climate and vegetation of the Lower (middle Miocene) and Middle (late Miocene–Pliocene) Siwalik successions of Darjeeling, eastern Himalaya, have been quantified. Reconstructed climate data, using the Coexistence Approach, suggest a decrease in winter temperatures and precipitation during the wettest months (MPwet) from the Lower to Middle Siwalik. The floristic assemblage suggests that Lower Siwalik forests were dominated by wet evergreen taxa, whereas deciduous ones became more dominant during the Middle Siwalik. The vegetation shift in the eastern Himalayan Siwalik was most likely due to a decrease in MPwet. The quantified climate–vegetation data from the eastern and western Himalayan Siwalik indicate that changes in the Indian summer monsoon had a profound impact on vegetation development during the period of deposition. We suggest that the decrease in winter temperature and summer monsoon rainfall during the Middle Siwalik might be linked with the Northern Hemisphere glaciation/cooling or a number of other things that were also going on at the time, including the continued rise of the Himalaya, and drying across the Tibetan region, which may have affected atmospheric circulation regionally.

A pair of samples, from host lava and an included segregation vein from the Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland, allows the assessment of a complete fractional crystallization of an olivine tholeiite at low pressure. The final product consists of silicic glasses with bimodal composition: trondhjemitic and more rarely granitic. Compilation of data on major element compositions of Icelandic silicic rocks reveals a clear difference from those of the segregation glasses. Fractional crystallization of basalts at low pressure is therefore not the most likely mechanism for the origin of silicic magmas in Iceland. Similar conclusions have been reached in studies on O- and Th-isotope compositions. On the other hand, the trondhjemitic compositions of the glasses in the segregation vein from Reykjanes Peninsula suggest that fractional crystallization of olivine tholeiites could have played a significant role during the formation of the very early continental crust.
