Having occasion in a work now in the press to refer to certain fossil Reptiles and Amphibians of which the commonly accepted nomenclature requires revision, I think it advisable to make the necessary amendments in a Journal specially devoted to Geology and Palæontology. I also take the opportunity of giving two new scientific names to Reptiles from the Wealden.

A total of 111 major element analyses have been made of impure calcareous rocks from the Late Precambrian Moinian sequence in NW Scotland. Samples were collected along a 36 km traverse from three stratigraphic horizons which are repeated by folding and vary in metamorphic grade from lower to upper amphibolite facies. Anorthite content of the plagioclase, which increases progressively from albite to anorthite, was assessed by X-ray diffraction measurement of 2θ (131–11); this value is used as a ‘metamorphic index’ for rocks with a CaO/Al2O3 (wt. %) ration of 0.3–0.7 and Na2O/Al2O3, < 0.35. Na2O/Al2O3 and K2O/Al2O3 ratios plotted against this index, together with the spatial relationship between metamorphic/chemical isograds and stratigraphic boundaries show that both Na (0.24–4.82% Na2O) and K (0.01–3.28% K2O) are lost from the calc-silicate rocks during prograde metamorphism. These chemical changes result in a variation of the stable mineralogy with increasing metamorphic grade and take place through the medium of the intergranular fluid.

Quartz veins and vein-breccias in a greywacke-shale sequence of ?Carboniferous-Triassic age were previously regarded as mesothermal silicified fault breccias, and related to an adjacent Eocene granodiorite pluton. New mapping of vein assemblages and textures, and their structural and cross-cutting relationships, demonstrates that the steeply dipping, sheeted, epithermal-textured vein array was hydraulic in origin and possibly Cretaceous in age. The main vein and breccia swarm trends for 14 km NNE along-strike and 2 km across-strike, cutting large irregular areas of silicified and brecciated sandstone, and patchy areas of pyritic, propylitic and K-feldspar alteration. Angular vein fabrics and hydraulic disruption textures indicate wedging by hydrothermal solutions, hydraulic rupture, brecciation and fragment transport, followed by open-space precipitation, in veins generally < 15 cm thick and breccias up to a few metres thick. Hydrothermal quartz, chlorite, calcite and chalcedony predominate, with variable amounts of chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite and pyrite. Epidote, arsenopyrite, K-feldspar and andradite garnet are conspicuous in places. Breccias were pre-and syn-mineralization, whereas mineral precipitation was pre-, syn- and post-breccia formation. Hydrothermal activity was simultaneous with extensional faulting, striking NNE, and accompanied by intrusion of dacitic dykes. There followed conjugate shearing on east- and ESE-striking faults, intrusion of high-level tonalite stocks, and several phases of basaltic andesite dyke intrusion. These hypabyssal rocks were probably coeval with the Antarctic Peninsula Volcanic Group dominating Livingston Island, dated between 130 and 75 Ma. Minor copper and iron sulphide-bearing veins occur in adjacent volcanic and hypabyssal intrusive rocks. The Hurd Peninsula veins may, therefore, form part of a volcanic-epithermal hydrothermal system (adularia-sericite-quartz type), of Cretaceous age, rather than a porphyry-related system of Eocene age.

Most of the specimens described herein have been in my collection for a long time, but lack of opportunity has prevented their being dealt with until now. Several species still require to be worked out and it is hoped to describe them later. Recently my friend, Mr. Stanley Westhead, of Clitheroe, allowed me the privilege of seeing certain specimens he had collected at Coplow Knoll, and one of these, a new Platycrinus, is described here. Some of the species, especially the Poteriocrinids, are assigned to genera whose validity at present is a matter of doubt. In recent years, American workers have made many changes in the nomenclature of the older Carboniferous genera, restricting some and giving new names to others and under the present disturbed conditions it has not been possible to see all these works some of which have a special bearing on the subject. Lack of reference to the majority of these must therefore be expected. In this connection I wish here to thank Mr. Harrell L. Strimple, of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, for much information and for copies of his papers up to date, as well as for other kindnesses. I have also to thank Dr. A. C. The internal variations in the discordance of an inhomogenous zircon population from a bedded quartzite within a c. 2700 Ma old gneiss have been studied. Varying degrees of response to events in a common multi-episodic, post-depositional history are reflected in the uranium and lead isotopic systems of size and magnetic fractions.

A minimum 207Pb/206Pb age for non-magnetic zircons is 2840 Ma with 206Pb/238U and 207Pb/235U data for the three size fractions raising the possibility of an age of at least 3250 Ma. This is interpreted as a minimum age for crustal material that was in existence in the region before the formation of the Lewisian complex. Some of the slightly magnetic zircons also have a pre-2700 Ma radiogenic lead component.

From a study of 24 outcrops in Neogene and Quaternary deposits of the central Ebro Basin, a number of diapiric deformations have been recognized, two principal types being differentiated: domal or pillow structures, and piercement or intrusive structures. The former are incipient diapirs of gypsum. Piercing structures have reverse faulted contacts not caused by halokinesis; here Neogene marls are the active plastic material, contrasting with the competent behaviour of gypsum. These intrusive structures are viscous diapirs which easily pierce the non-consolidated, low strength Quaternary gravel overburden and submit it to a horizontal compressive stress. As a consequence, reverse faults and flexures develop in it. Generally normal faults and tension cracks do not appear. Underlying gypsum beds are frequently pulled up into diapirs and they constitute the structural core.

Density contrast and conditions for plastic flow exist at the marl–gravel boundary. It seems to have been specially common at the time of Quaternary fluvial sedimentation, so that much deformation is synsedimentary. Diapiric phenomena have been very active during early to middle Pleistocene time, becoming weaker afterwards.

Radiodonts are a diverse clade of Lower Palaeozoic stem-group euarthropods that played a key role in the emergence of complex marine trophic webs. The latest addition to the group, Cambroraster falcatus, was recently described from the Wuliuan Burgess Shale, and is characterized by a unique horseshoe-shaped central carapace element. Here we report the discovery of Cambroraster sp. nov. A, a new species from the Cambrian Stage 3 Chengjiang Lagerstätte of South China. The new occurrence of Cambroraster demonstrates that some of the earliest known radiodonts had already evolved a highly derived carapace morphology adapted to an essentially eudemersal life as sediment foragers.

A mafic amphibole-bearing granulite with porphyroblastic garnet was investigated to evaluate: (1) the rare earth element (REE) partition among garnet, zircon, orthopyroxene and amphibole during the metamorphic evolution; (2) the significance of the REE distribution along lobes and bights of reabsorbed garnet rim; and (3) REE distribution coefficient values (DREE) suggestive of chemical equilibrium, assuming garnet as a reference. The results have been compared with those deriving from an intermediate granulite containing porphyroblastic garnet, without amphibole. Porphyroblastic garnet from both samples is rimmed by a continuous corona formed during post-peak decompression characterized by REE-enriched lobes and REE-poor bights. The amphiboles from corona have various REE abundances, reflecting a different dissolution rate of original garnet rim. The initial slow rate of garnet dissolution caused high REE concentration in the new garnet rim due to intra-crystalline diffusion, leading to the formation of REE-poorer amphiboles in corona. Subsequently, under an increasing geothermal gradient and fluid-present conditions, the faster dissolution of garnet determined the formation of bights and the transfer of REEs towards the corona. The timing of garnet growth and its dissolution were checked by U–Pb zircon ages. The zircons dated from 339 Ma to 303 Ma in two rock types combined with the garnet domains (core, outer core, rim) show similar distribution of patterns relative to heavy rare earth elements for zircon and garnet (DHREEzrn/grt), suggesting chemical equilibrium. Zircons dated at c. 300 Ma do not appear in equilibrium with REE-rich garnet lobes, and younger zircons (278 Ma) show a new equilibrium with REE-poor garnet bights. On this basis, the DHREEamph/grt values obtained in specific textural sites might be interpreted as suggestive of equilibrium under granulite conditions.

The north-eastern area of Dartmoor is traversed by a series of straight valleys which follow fault lines. One fault-system, which crosses the granite from near Lustleigh north-westwards to Stickle-path, is described in detail, and its relationships to structures in a wider area are briefly discussed.

Segregation vesicles have been recognized in two plagiophyric dolerite dykes in northwestern Ireland. The vesicles are each outlined by a rim of tangentially arranged plagioclase, and filled to a variable extent by a fine-grained, crescent-shaped lining of fractionated residual melt. They closely resemble segregation vesicles reported from Atlantic ocean-floor basalts.

It is suggested (1) that the vesicles began as CO2-rich bubbles released during decompression; (2) that these bubbles grew very little during crystallization, while H2O became concentrated in the residual melt; and (3) that exsolution and expansion of H2O-rich vapour forced interstitial residual melt through the rigid but permeable framework of crystals and into the existing CO2-rich bubble cavities.

New information on acritarchs from the Duolbagáisá Formation, Digermulen Peninsula, Arctic Norway, enable recognition of the three Cambrian Series 2 acritarch-based zones: the Skiagia ornata–Fimbriaglomerella membranacea, Heliosphaeridium dissimilare–Skiagia ciliosa and Volkovia dentifera–Liepaina plana Assemblage zones. Acritarchs of the Skiagia ornata–Fimbriaglomerella membranacea Zone (Cambrian Stage 3) appear near the base of the unit, close to an undetermined trilobite. In the Upper Member of the Duolbagáisá Formation, in levels with Kjerulfia n. sp. and Elliptocephala n. sp., appears an assemblage with abundant Skiagia ciliosa, indicative of the Heliosphaeridium dissimilare–Skiagia ciliosa Zone. A few metres higher appear Liepaina plana, Heliosphaeridium notatum and Retisphaeridium dichamerum, which indicate the Volkovia dentifera–Liepaina plana Zone (Cambrian Stage 4). The transition between the Duolbagáisá Formation and the overlying Kistedalen Formation is marked by the appearance of Comasphaeridium longispinosum, Multiplicisphaeridium llynense and Eliasum llaniscum, diagnostic of the Miaolingian Series. This coincides with the disappearance of Skiagia; occurrences of Skiagia in Miaolingian strata consist of reworked material related to the Hawke Bay regression at the Cambrian Stage 4–Wuliuan transition. The absence of Skiagia in higher levels of the Duolbagáisá Formation and Kistedalen Formation suggests that no unconformity formed during the Hawke Bay regression in this area. The chronostratigraphical significance of the Skiagia ornata–Fimbriaglomerella membranacea, Heliosphaeridium dissimilare–Skiagia ciliosa and Volkovia dentifera–Liepaina plana zones is critically analysed. Correlation of the Duolbagáisá Formation with peri-Gondwanan terrains of Avalonia and Iberia is established. The Digermulen Peninsula has great potential as a reference section for establishing a Cambrian chronostratigraphy based on acritarchs.

The Doba gabbro was collected from an exploration well through the Cretaceous Doba basin of southern Chad. The gabbro is composed mostly of plagioclase, clinopyroxene and Fe–Ti oxide minerals and displays cumulus mineral textures. Whole-rock 40Ar–39Ar step-heating geochronology yielded a Late Permian plateau age of 257 ± 1 Ma. The major and trace elemental geochemistry shows that the gabbro is tholeiitic in composition and has trace element ratios (i.e. La/YbN > 7; Sm/YbPM > 3.4; Nb/Y > 1; Zr/Y > 5) indicative of a basaltic melt derived from a garnet-bearing mantle source. The moderately enriched Sr–Nd isotopes (i.e. ISr = 0.70495 to 0.70839; ɛNd(T) = −1.0 to −1.3) fall within the mantle array (i.e. OIB-like) and are similar to other Late Permian plutonic rocks of North-Central Africa (i.e. ISr = 0.7040 to 0.7070). The enriched isotopic composition of the Doba gabbro contrasts with the more depleted compositions of the spatially associated Neoproterozoic post-Pan-African within-plate granites. The contrasting Nd isotope composition between the older within-plate granites and the younger Doba gabbro indicates that different mantle sources produced the rocks and thus may mark the southern boundary of the Saharan Metacraton.

Lawsonite eclogites are rare rocks and have been described from only a few localities in the world. Lawsonite-bearing assemblages are highly unstable and physico-chemical processes linked to exhumation may destroy them; only aggregates interpreted as pseudomorphs after lawsonite could be often recognized. In this paper, we present a detailed structural and petrological study of an area in the northwestern sector of the metaophiolitic high-pressure Voltri Massif (Ligurian Western Alps, Italy). The study area is characterized by a lawsonite-bearing eclogitic metagabbro associated with carbonated serpentinites and glaucophanic metasediments. The metagabbro body reached eclogitic metamorphic peak conditions at T = 465–477°C and P = 20.9–24.4 kbar, with H2O continuously supplied to the system. H2O under-saturated conditions, with the occurrence of both lawsonite and epidote, characterized the exhumation path. Both the low temperature recorded by the body and the occurrence of variously carbonated serpentinites led us to interpret this area as a portion of the top of the subducted slab, coupled with a ‘cool’ mantle wedge, where both aqueous fluids and carbonate-rich fluids were present. The occurrence of rocks belonging to different paleogeographic domains (e.g. continent versus ocean) and the multiple deformations recorded by the metagabbro suggest that this area was nearby the slab–mantle interface. This sector was thus affected by a shear regime that acted in a low-viscosity serpentinite channel, bringing these high-pressure rocks back to the surface.

A blueschist-facies mylonite crops out between two high-pressure tectono-metamorphic oceanic units of the Ligurian Western Alps (NW Italy). This mylonitic metabasite is made up of alternating layers with different grain size and proportions of blueschist-facies minerals.

The mylonitic foliation formed at metamorphic conditions of T = 220–310 °C and P = 6.5–10 kbar. The mylonite shows various superposed structures: (i) intrafoliar and similar folds; (ii) chocolate-tablet foliation boudinage; (iii) veins; (iv) breccia.

The occurrence of comparable mineral assemblages along the foliation, in boudin necks, in veins and in breccia cement suggests that the transition from ductile deformation (folds) to brittle deformation (veining and breccia), passing through a brittle–ductile regime (foliation boudinage), occurred gradually, without a substantial change in mineral assemblage and therefore in the overall P–T metamorphic conditions (blueschist-facies).

A strong fluid–rock interaction was associated with all the deformative events affecting the rock: the mylonite shows an enrichment in incompatible elements (i.e. As and Sb), suggesting an input of fluids, released by adjacent high-pressure metasedimentary rocks, during ductile deformation. The following fracturing was probably enhanced by brittle instabilities arising from strain and pore-fluid pressure partitioning between adjacent domains, without further external fluid input.

Fluids were therefore fixed inside the rock during mylonitization and later released into a dense fracture mesh that allowed them to migrate through the mylonitic horizon close to the plate interface.

We finally propose that the fracture mesh might represent the field evidence of past episodic tremors or ‘slow earthquakes’ triggered by high pore-fluid pressure.

Fractures that form when fluid pressure ruptures the rock are referred to as fluid-driven fractures or hydrofractures. These include most dykes, inclined sheets and sills, but also many mineral veins and joints, as well as human-made hydraulic fractures. While considerable field and theoretical work has focused on the geometry and arrest of hydrofractures, how they select their propagation paths, particularly in layered and faulted rocks, has received less attention. Here I propose that of all the possible paths that a given hydrofracture may follow, it selects the path of least (minimum) action as determined by Hamilton’s principle. This means that the selected path is that along which the energy transformed (released) multiplied by the time taken for the propagation is a minimum. Hydrofractures advance their tips/fronts in steps, with a time lag between the fracture front and the fluid front. In the present framework, each step is then controlled by Hamilton’s principle. The results suggest that when the hosting rock body is regarded as homogeneous, isotropic and non-fractured, hydrofracture paths are everywhere perpendicular to the trajectories of the minimum compressive (maximum tensile) principal stress σ3 and follow the trajectories of the maximum principal compressive stress σ1. When applied to layered and faulted rock body, the results indicate that hydrofracture paths may follow existing faults for a while, depending primarily on (1) the dip of the fault (steep faults are the most likely to be used by vertically propagating hydrofractures), and (2) the tensile strength across the fault compared with the tensile strength of the host rock along a path following the direction of σ 1. The results suggest that hydrofractures may use faults as parts of their paths primarily if the fault is steeply dipping and with close to zero tensile strength.

Phlogopite-spinel-bronzite rocks, in which aggregates of bronzite and sapphirine appear to be pseudomorphs of aluminous anthophyllite, occur in a restricted low-granulite terrain in the Strangways Range, central Australia. The form of the postulated reaction is gedrite + ΔH = enstatite + sapphirine + silica + escaping “ water ”.

The information gained by us during the first three Swedish expeditions to Spitzbergen having, either directly through our own experience, or indirectly through conversation with most of the intelligent and bold whalers and walrus-hunters of Northern Norway, fully confirmed the observations of Scoresby, Phipps, Tschitschagoff, Parry, Buchan, Franklin, Clavering and others, respecting the impossibility of penetrating by ship during the summer through the crowded ice-masses to the north of Spitzbergen, far beyond the 80th degree of latitude, an Arctic Expedition was sent out from Sweden in 1868, having for its object, among other things, to renew during the autumn months the attempt to sail towards the pole from the northern coast of Spitzbergen. I have, in a report of the expedition of 1868, given a brief accountable result of that undertaking, which showed that even at that period of the year, when the water is most free from drift-ice, the polar basin, at least to the north of Europe, and doubtless also to the north of America and Asia, is so full of drift-ice that all possibility of passing through it in a ship is out of the question.

The various views put forth prior to 1893 to account for the origin of Indian laterites have been clearly and sufficiently discussed in Oldham's edition of Medlicott & Blanford's Manual of the Geology of India (pp. 369 et seq.). Since that year the only contribution of importance to the literature of lateritic genesis in India is a paper by Mr. Thos. H. Holland, F.R.S., the present Director of the Indian Geological Survey, having for its text the conclusions of Bauer. In it the author suggested that laterite might owe its origin to “some lowly organism,” but no sufficient data were advanced in support of the suggestion. Bauer's specimens indicated a certain amount of dehydration in laterites, and this fact, together with the absence of hydration products from certain peridotites in Southern India, was deemed to indicate a general dehydration for the bauxitic laterites of the Deccan. The gibbsite (Al2 O3, 3 H2O) of laterite was supposed to be dehydrated to diaspore (A2 O3, H2O), and it was assumed that “this irregular loss of water is probably the cause of variation in bauxite.”

In this study, relationships between fracture patterns, lithology, thickness, diagenetic processes and grain size are evaluated within Cretaceous sediments in two sections of Dizlu and Kolah Ghazi of Isfahan. This study area was selected based on its outcrops of different rock units and its well-developed tectonic fractures. The fracture patterns within stratigraphic units of these sections are studied using geometrical and statistical analyses. This study finds that variable fracture spacing and fracture spacing ratios can be affected by lithology, thickness, grain size of sediments and diagenetic processes. A study of fracture stratigraphy based on fracture pattern evaluation within different cropped-out sedimentary rocks can be used to improve understanding of the same types of sedimentary rock units below the surface or throughout other sedimentary basins. Consequently, this could improve information regarding storage and fluid flow pattern throughout sedimentary rocks in different regions, even for subsurface purposes.
