A detailed examination of some new exposures in the Ben Lawers range reveals folds of three deformational episodes. These are described megascopically and microscopically. The foldgeometry is complex but the kinematic axes of each deformation are shown to be closely related. The folds of the first deformation have relationships which confirm the position of these rocks on the inverted limb of the Tay Nappe. Folds with relationships shown by those of the second deformation have not been described from adjacent areas. The folds of the third deformation are associated with the formation of the Ben Lawers Synform

Between Kennedy's Pass, 4 miles south of Girvan, and Currarie Port, 3½ miles south of Ballantrae, the coast is occupied by a varied assemblage of igneous rocks that have a north-easterly strike and extend inland for several miles (Text-fig. 1). The most important members of this assemblage are a series of spilite lavas and two large outcrops of serpentine. In the present paper it is not intended to give a general description of these rocks, but to concentrate upon the age-relationship of the serpentine to the lavas and associated sediments, in which Lapworth and later workers discovered Arenig fossils.

Eight inliers of Carboniferous Limestone are situated between Ashby de la Zouch and Melbourne on the northeastern side of the Leicestershire Coalfield. They may conveniently be divided into a western group consisting of the Ticknall, Calke, and Dimminsdale exposures, all of which occupy comparatively low ground in valleys, and an easterly group, Breedon Hill, Breedon Cloud, Barrow Hill, Osgathorpe, and Grace Dieu. The first three of the latter group form prominent hills rising above the Triassic rocks which surround them. They are also remarkable for the high dips in the rocks composing them. In the other inliers dips of less than 15° are the rule, while dips of about 5° are common.

Facies and stratigraphic analysis of the Port Lazo and Roche Jagu formations, together the lower part of the Plourivo-Plouézec Group, suggests deposition in three distinct depositional systems. The lower part of the Port Lazo Formation comprises red conglomerate, sandstone and shale of alluvial fan to alluvial plain origin. A conformable interval of grey sandstone and shale succeeds the lower Port Lazo red beds and records a period of subtidal sedimentation dominated by river-fed, shallow-water turbidity currents (hyperpycnites). The succeeding Roche Jagu Formation comprises red sandstones and shales of braided fluvial origin. It is intercalated with, and succeeded by, andesites. The andesites succeeding the fluvial strata overlie a prominent erosion surface and are lava flows, whereas those intercalated with the fluvial strata are intrusions. Rb–Sr radiometric dating of the andesites at 472+/−5 Ma is commonly used as evidence for the whole Plourivo-Plouézec Group being Early Ordovician in age. However, the stratigraphic relationships and patterns of sedimentation in the Port Lazo and Roche Jagu formations, together with the localized presence of Arumberia, suggest they are most likely of early Cambrian age and related to a phase of post-Cadomian rifting. The facies deposited show both similarities to and differences from neighbouring strata of equivalent age, and highlight the control exerted by sediment load on alluvial and nearshore processes on early Palaeozoic environments.

Dark patches of charnockitic rocks characterized by orthopyroxene occur within garnetiferous granite gneisses (leptynites) in a granulite-migmatite suite around the Chilka Lake, Orissa, within the Eastern Ghats belt in the Indian Precambrian. Analysis of structures of different scales observed in this terrain establishes the presence of three phases of deformation. S1 is pervasive in the metapelitic granulites (mainlykhondalite), while in the migmatite complex composed of leptynites, charnockites and quartzofeldspathic veins, S1 is present exclusively within the charnockite lenses and bands, and shows different stages of obliteration in the associated leptynites. Thus, the charnockite patches must be earlier than the surrounding migmatitic rocks. The charnockite patches and the surrounding leptynitic gneisses are chemically quite different and the two rock types are not related by any prograde or retrograde transformation. The shapes and disposition of charnockite patches in the mixed exposures are found to be largely controlled by the third phase of folding and locally associated shearing. The kinematics of this late deformation are not favourable for fluid ingress from deeper levels.

Beothukis mistakensis from the Ediacaran System of Newfoundland, Canada demonstrates complex fractal-like morphology through the development of primary-, secondary- and tertiary-order Rangea-like units. The primary-order rangeomorph units observed in B. mistakensis are tightly juxtaposed, show no evidence of being independent of one another and are made up of chamber-like secondary-order – probably mesoglea-filled – units. The growth of these rangeomorph units demonstrates that the frond developed from the tip towards the basal region through ontogeny. The tertiary-order units of Beothukis are considered to represent surface morphology on the secondary-order units. This is in contrast to palaeobiological reconstructions of Beothukis that invoke three-dimensional fractal-like branches with independent units, which has been used to infer an osmotrophic mode of life. It is considered here that the fractal-like morphology of the lower surface of B. mistakensis was an adaptation to increase surface area to volume ratio. The quilted morphology of Beothukis proposed here is consistent with a sessile, reclining, phagocytotic and/or chemosymbiotic mode of life similar to that invoked for the reclining rangeomorph Fractofusus.

Sanidine composition and bulk geochemistry of volcanic ash beds from the East Baltic indicate the subalkaline nature of the volcanism near the margins of the Baltica plate during the Silurian. Several bentonites in the Wenlock include a previously unknown sanidine with 48 to 58 mol % of the Na+Ca component. In contrast to the earlier Telychian volcanism, sodium-rich sanidine occurs in ash beds which originate from relatively moderately evolved dacitic magma. The studied material from two drill cores integrated with previous research enables production of a more complete list of 49 volcanic eruption layers for the lower to middle Wenlock in the East Baltic. This updated list of bentonites characterized by their sanidine compositions forms a good basis for future integrated bio- and chemostratigraphic correlations in northern Europe.

The extent to which a country suffers denudation at the present time is to be measured by the amount of mineral matter removed from its surface and carried into the sea. An attentive examination of this subject is calculated to throw some light on the vexed question of the origin of valleys and also on the value of geological time. Of the mineral substances received by the sea from the land, one portion, and by far the larger, is brought down by streams, the other is washed of by the waves of the sea itself.

The Lettereeneen fault, a newly recognized structure, brings the Mweelrea and Maumtrasna Groups of the Partry Series (Caradocian-Llandeilian age) into contact. The stratigraphy of the Mweelrea Group, of red bed facies, is followed from the presence of welded tuff horizons; no such markers exist in the Maumtrasna Group which lies unconformably upon the former.

Sedimentary structures of shallow water origin occur in each group. Three types of conglomerate recognized in the area are examined. The immature feldspathic sandstones increase in arkosity upwards.

A proluvial or proluvio-marine environment of deposition is suggested, with debris derived from an eastward extension of the metamorphosed Dalradian rocks of the Connemara Cordillera and foothills of sedimentary and volcanic rocks.

The purpose of this communication is to draw attention to the possible effect of vast and synchronous volcanic eruptions and associated earth-movement, not only on local but on world climate. It is divided into two parts, the first dealing with the volcanic aspect and its particular relation to climatic changes in East Africa, and the second discussing the wider significance of the proposition and the possibly greater effect of orogenic movements on world climate when associated with volcanic episodes.

As early as 1915, it was made clear by Bowen that, given continuous separation of crystals from the successive residual liquids of a consolidating magma which was initially basaltic in composition, the inevitable result would be a gabbroic rock in depth, a granitic one above, and “various intermediate types in the intermediate layers”. As a necessary condition to the evolution of a magmatic residuum of granitic composition, this process of progressive crystallization differentiation involves the generation of intermediate rock-types from residual liquids of intermediate composition. Certain investigators, however, led by the authors of the Mull memoir (1924), have entirely overlooked the necessity of this condition. Faced with the association of contrasted acid and basic rocks, which is a conspicuous characteristic of many continental central complexes, they have attempted to account for the facts by introducing a modified conception of crystallization differentiation for which Nockolds has recently proposed the name contrasted differentiation. According to this conception, the residual liquid of consolidating basaltic magma is of granitic composition and can be separated in bulk from a crystalline gabbroic phase.

Among the vertebrate remains discovered by M. Houzeau de Lehaie in the “Craie brune phosphatée” of Ciply, is the crown of a large tritoral tooth, of unusual form and somewhat difficult of determination. A study of the reptilian teeth from the New Jersey Greensand in the Philadelphia Academy of Sciences has, however, suggested to the writer a plausible explanation of the specimen; and a brief notice of its characters may perhaps lead to the discovery of more satisfactory evidence of the animal to which it pertains.

An enigmatic buried structure, located in Mesozoic sedimentary rocks in the Perth Basin, Western Australia, was discovered in 1990 by Ampol Exploration. The basin-like Yallalie structure (centred on 30° 26′ 40.3″ S, 115° 46′ 16.4″ E) is circular in plan view and about 12 km in diameter. High-resolution, seismic-reflection profiles across the structure show a basin-shaped area of chaotic reflections that extend to a depth of approximately 2 km below the surface. The structure has sharp boundaries with surrounding faulted, but otherwise relatively undisturbed, rocks. In the centre of the structure there is an uplifted area approximately 3–4 km across, similar to those described from complex meteorite impact structures. The seismically defined structure coincides with a circular topographic depression, and image processing of digital elevation data has allowed recognition of concentric and radial structures extending as far as 40 km from the centre of the depression. Gravity surveys show the structure to be associated with a positive gravity anomaly of about 30 gu. Aeromagnetic surveys have defined annular anomalies associated with the central uplifted section, and possibly margins, of the structure. A search for siderophile element enrichments (by neutron activation analysis) in the rocks of the structure, which would indicate the presence of a meteorite component, proved negative. Quartz grains in cores that penetrate the structure show the development of prismatic cleavage fractures and irregular, slightly curved planes formed by brittle fracture. An allochthonous breccia of Late Cretaceous rocks occurs a few kilometres west of the western margin of the structure. Quartz grains from a thin veneer of Tertiary sediments that drape the structure are essentially undeformed. However, multiple sets of closely spaced planar deformation features in quartz, characteristic of highly shocked rocks, have yet to be observed in the rocks of the Yallalie structure and the allochthonous breccia. The morphology of the Yallalie structure determined from topographic and geophysical data suggests strongly that it is of impact origin. Geological and geochemical evidence is equivocal, but is not inconsistent with this interpretation.

Bradoriids are small bivalved arthropods that had global distribution for about 20 million years beginning at Cambrian Epoch 2 (c. 521 Ma). The majority of bradoriids are considered to be benthic, favouring oxygenated waters, as suggested by their anatomy, lithofacies distribution, faunal associates and provinciality. Most bradoriids were extinct by the end of the Drumian Age (middle of Cambrian Epoch 3). The post-Drumian is characterized by widespread dysoxic shelf lithofacies in southern Britain and Scandinavia and by the abundance of phosphatocopid arthropods. This interval is also associated with two bradoriid species with wide intercontinental distribution: Anabarochilina primordialis, which had a geographical range from the palaeo-tropics to high southern palaeo-latitude, and Anabarochilina australis, which extended through the palaeo-tropics from Laurentia to Gondwana. The wide environmental and geographical range of these species, coupled with a carapace anatomy that suggests an active lifestyle, is used to infer a zooplanktonic lifestyle. A possible driver of this widespread Cambrian bradoriid zooplankton was sea-level rise coupled to the periodic spread of low oxygen conditions onto continental shelves, acting in tandem with anatomical pre-adaptations for swimming. Parallels exist with the myodocope ostracod colonization of the water column during Silurian time, which may also have been influenced by extrinsic environmental controls acting on anatomical pre-adaptations for swimming. Similar biological and environmental mechanisms may have facilitated arthropod zooplankton colonizations across Phanerozoic time.

Isotopic and stratigraphic ages of the ~ 80 km diameter Puchezh-Katunki (Russia; 220 ± 10 to 167 ± 3 Ma) and the ~ 20 km diameter Obolon (Ukraine; 215 ± 25 to 169 ± 7 Ma) impact structures are associated with significant age uncertainties. As a case study, reconstructions of the palaeogeography at the time of crater formation (Late Triassic to Middle Jurassic) based on recent palaeogeographic maps help further to constrain impact ages. Palaeogeographic studies suggest that Puchezh-Katunki is older than 170 Ma and that Obolon is younger than 185 Ma. This also rules out that Obolon formed during a ~ 214 Ma Late Triassic multiple impact event as recently discussed.

The great majority of Moine lineations are mica structures, and together with a parallel preferred orientation of epidote [010]-axes, are directed mainly into the south-east quadrant. This orientation is retained within the crush zone alongside the Moine Thrust. The regional preferred orientation of muscovite [100]-axes and [001]-axes is consistent with north-east and south-west movements except within the crush zone where fabric reorientation suggests movements normal to this direction. The growth of albite textures and fabric is intimately associated with thrust plane movements, the preferred orientation of albite suggesting a south-east and north-west vertical plane of deformation.

The real nature of marine reptile fossils found in England between the 1700s and the beginning of the 1900s remained enigmatic until Mary Anning's incredible fossil discoveries and their subsequent study by eminent English and French scientists. In 1820, Georges Cuvier acquired several ichthyosaur specimens found by Mary Anning, now kept or displayed in the Palaeontology Gallery of the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle (MNHN) in Paris. Four years later, Cuvier obtained a plesiosaur specimen from Mary Anning, only the second ever discovered. Cuvier was fascinated by these fossils and their study allowed him to apply his comparative anatomical method and to support his catastrophist theory. We have re-examined these important specimens from a historical point of view, and describe them here taxonomically for the first time since Cuvier's works. The Paris specimens belong to two different ichthyosaur genera (Ichthyosaurus and Leptonectes) and one plesiosaur genus (Plesiosaurus).

Three models are evaluated for restoring basement rocks coring tectonic windows (Window-Basement) in the Scandinavian Caledonides; parautochthonous (Model I) and allochthonous (models II/III), with initial imbrication of the Window-Basement post-dating or pre-dating, respectively, that in the external imbricate zone (Lower Allochthon). In Model I, the Window-Basement comes from the eastern margin of the basin now imbricated into the Lower Allochthon, while in models II/III it comes from the western margin. In Model II, the Window-Basement formed a basement-high between Tonian and Cryogenian sediments imbricated into the Middle and Lower allochthons; in Model III deposition of the Lower Allochthon sediments commenced in Ediacaran times. Balanced cross-sections and branch-line restorations of four transects (Finnmark–Troms, Västerbotten–Nordland, Jämtland–Trøndelag, Telemark–Møre og Romsdal) show similar restored lengths for the models in two transects and longer restorations for models II/III in the other transects. Model I can result in c. 280 km wide gaps in the restored Lower Allochthon, evidence for which is not seen in the sedimentology. The presence of <3 km thick alluvial-fan deposits at the base of the Middle Allochthon indicates proximal, rapidly uplifting basement during Tonian–Cryogenian periods, taken as the origin of the Window-Basement during thrusting in models II/III. Model I requires multiple changes in thrusting-direction and predicts major thrusts or back-thrusts, currently unrecognized, separating parts of the Lower Allochthon; neither are required in models II/III. Metamorphic data are consistent with models II/III. Despite considerable along-strike structural variability in the external Scandinavian Caledonides, models II/III are preferred for the restoration of the Window-Basement.

Along the Dinaric–Hellenic orogen, the Late Jurassic – Early Cretaceous ophiolite obduction over the Adria continental margin was sealed by sedimentation of clastic terrestrial deposits rapidly followed by a widespread carbonate platform system since the Early Cretaceous period. These Cretaceous sediments presently crop out over areas of varying extension, from several hundred kilometre wide undeformed continuous covers to small-scale tectonic slivers involved in the tectonic stack following the latest Cretaceous–Palaeogene collision. These deposits are unconformably sedimented above the units formed by the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous nappe stacking above the eastern Adria continental margin. We studied these deposits in a large area between western Serbia and eastern Bosnia. In the studied area, these deposits are divided into three lithostratigraphic groups according to their age, depositional environment and type of underlying basement. The Mokra Gora Group sediments (upper Aptian–Maastrichtian) were deposited on top of previously obducted and weathered ophiolites, the Kosjerić Group (Cenomanian–Campanian) overlies composite tectonic units comprising obducted ophiolites and their underlying continental basement portions, while the Guča Group (Campanian–Maastrichtian) exclusively rests on top of continental basement. The reconstructed sedimentary evolution of these groups, together with the comparison with the syn- and post-obduction deposits at the front of the ophiolitic nappe(s) in a wider area of the internal Dinarides (e.g. Pogari Group and Bosnian flysch), allowed us to clarify the obduction mechanisms, including their tectonic context, the changes in depositional environments and the timing of depositional and tectonic events, and, in a wider view, shed light on the geodynamic evolution of the Dinaric belt.
