Contemporary European History commissions both review articles and Spotlight historiography essays.
Review articles review at least two related books and are approximately 4,000-6,000 words in length. Spotlight historiography essays deal with broader questions, including (but not limited to) national historiographical controversies, methodological interventions, and reassessments of existing scholarship. Such essays can be between 2,000-8,000 words in length.
If you are interested in writing a review article or Spotlight essay, please contact the review editors in the first instance. Note that we only commission review articles and Spotlight essays from scholars at postdoctoral level or above. However, we welcome research article submissions from doctoral students, as well as short blog posts that deal with ongoing doctoral research.
