On the night of June 4, 1933, we “tied out” seven females of Tropaea luna and by 11 p. m. four of them had found mates.

On June 10 at 1.30 p. m., a male and a female Actias selene emerged from cocoons which we had purchased in New York. The following day two males emerged. Copulation occurred with one of these at 11.55 p. m. The mates separated at 2.30 the next morning and the female began ovipositing at once.

Profenusa lucifex (Ross), a blotch-mining sawfly on oak, Quercus L., is occasionally abundant in Ontario. The adults occur on host trees in June. The larvae, which are described and illustrated, mine the leaves from about mid-June to late July with a small partial second generation in the fall. The insect overwinters in the soil. Three species of chalcid parasites are known to attack eggs and larvae.

Euxoa ustulata n. sp., allied to Euxoa perexcellens (Grote), is described from northern California. Adults and genitalia of both species are illustrated.

On 15 November 1971, during collection of galled balsam fir needles from two experimental plots in Edinburg, Maine, damaged galls were noted. The galls had obviously been torn open (Fig. 1). Since this was not recorded in the literature and damaged galls were numerous, the situation was evaluated.

Hololepta fossularis Say. The habitatio of this insect is usually under locust bark in the first stages of decay, a fact so well known that collectors would look for it in no other place. But last summer I found a number of them under the bark of Ulmus fulva (slippery elm), the odor of which in the same state of decomposition is as rank as that of Robinia. With them were several H. lucida. The individuals of these two species so approximate as in some examples to be scarcely separable; and indeed there is a reasonable doubt whether any of them are instinctively conscious of being specifically different.

In 1885 von Ernst Girschner described a remarkable Carcelia-like fly from the Thuringian district of central Germany which was noteworthy in that it possessed a number of paired plumose hairs on the head. The facial hairs were the more noticeable as they originate not on the facialia or parafacialia as normal bristles, but apparently in the ptilinal groove between the two regions, two pairs being found here and three pairs on the anterior part of the front.

Four new species of the genus Lygocoris Reuter, subgenus Neolygus Knight, are described: knighti and walleyi from Ontario; piceicola, from New Brunswick and Quebec; and atricallus from Ontario and Quebec. Male genitalia are illustrated, host plants are listed, and relationships to other species are discussed.

The streams and lakes of western Montana offer a variety of habitats for species of aquatic insects but heretofore extensive collection and study of these forms has not been undertaken. During the past two years collections of both nymphs and adults have been made on several streams. The Plecoptera in these collections include the undescribed nymphs of Nemoura cinctipes Banks and several species which have not been reported for Montana.

Crinophleba rostrata, a new genus and species of a phorid fly from New Brunswick, Canada, is described.

Patagonicola Packer new genus is described for two species of xeromelissine bee (Hymenoptera: Colletidae) from Patagonian Argentina. One species, P. graveli Packer new species is described; the second species, P. aenigma (Packer) new combination, originally placed in Chilicola Spinola, 1851 subgenus Chilioediscelis Toro and Moldenke, 1979, is designated as the type species. The new genus is superficially most similar to Xenochilicola Toro and Moldenke, 1979 but possesses none of the derived characteristics that were originally used to define that genus. Results of a phylogenetic analysis, based upon 114 morphological characters, are presented and suggest that the new genus is the sister clade to (Geodiscelis Michener and Rozen, 1999 + Xeromelissa Cockerell, 1926). An illustrated key is provided for the genera of Xeromelissinae and for the two species of Patagonicola.

During the summers of 1901–2, while at the Minnesota Seaside Station of Vancouver Island, Professor Raymond C. Osburn collected a number of Diptera, and during the these same seasons and the past summer Professor R. V. Harvey, of The Queen's School at Vancouver, British Columbia, collected in the same order. Since so little has been published on the Diptera of that province, we have thought that even a short paper on the Dipterological fauna would be of interest and probably of some value.

Four new Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) species and two new genera are described from Ecuador: Blabia albosetanew species (Lamiinae: Desmiphorini); Alloblabianew genus, type species, A. praecipuanew species (Lamiinae: Desmiphorini); Alicalnew genus, type species, A. tuberculatusnew species (Lamiinae: Calliini); and Piola schiffinew species (Lamiinae: Phacellini). The new species of Blabia Thomson, 1864 and Piola Marinoni, 1974, and Alical are included in modified published keys.

The Nearctic fauna of the genus Calamoncosis Enderlein is reviewed. Five species are present in eastern North America: C. carncrossi Nartshuk was recently described from New York; the Palearctic species C. aprica (Meigen) and C. glyceriae Nartshuk are newly recorded, and two new species, C. brooksi and C. munda, are described from eastern North America. A sixth species present in the Nearctic Region is represented by one female specimen and is not identifiable. Most Nearctic specimens were collected in peatlands or marshes in Quebec, but there are scattered records from other grass-dominated habitats in Ontario, Manitoba, New York, and Texas. A key to the described species of Calamoncosis in the Nearctic Region is given.

It was necessary to know the specific gravity of the haemolymph, or blood, of grasshoppers for certain investigations on insect immunity, This information is not given in reviews on the physical properties of insect haemolymph (Rapp, 1947; Buck, 1953). Determinations of specific gravity were made by the technique developed by Lowry and Hunter (1945) and used on insects by Baldwin and House (1352). Nine males and 11 females of Melanoplus bivittatus (Say) and 11 males and nine females of Melanoplus mexicanus (Sauss.) were used after they had fed in the laboratory for three days on lettuce and dry dietary components. The mean specific gravity and the standard deviation for M. bivittatus was 1.0271 ± .0043, 1.0262 ± .0046, for the male and 1.0281 ± .0039 for the female; for M. mexicanus, 1.0261 ± .0023, 1.0257 ±.0021, and 1.0264 ± .0025, respectively.

The following new odontiine taxa are described: Clupeosoma cicatricale, Sumatra; C. margarisemale, Java; C. microthyrale, Sabah; Hydrorybina fulvescens, Sumatra; Hemiscopis intermedialis, Soemba; Platynoorda, and its type-species P. atrivittalis, Sabah; Porphyronoorda, and its type-species P. decumbens, S. India; Gononoorda, its type-species G. neervoorti, Java; also G. jacobsoni, Sumatra. Hydrorybina Hampson is removed from the synonymy of Clupeosoma Snellen, and is redefined. In addition to the type-species, H. polusalis (Walker), and the new species H. fulvescens, the genus includes two species, Anemosa pryeri Butler and Clupeosoma violascens Hampson, transferred as new combinations from Clupeosoma. Syllythria bicolor Moore, placed first in Hydrorybina then in Clupeosoma by Hampson, is considered probably odontiine but probably not a member of either of those genera. It is left in Clupeosoma pending further investigation. Eurycreon? rubralis Warren is removed from the synonymy of C. bicolor and is transferred to the subfamily Pyraustinae as Pyrausta rubralis (Warren), n. comb. The relationship of Hydrorybina to Hemiscopis Warren is pointed out, and differential characters are given. Micromania Swinhoe, with type-species M. stigmatalis Swinhoe, is removed from the synonymy of Hemiscopis and is transferred to the subfamily Nymphulinae in the vicinity of Paracymoriza Warren, which is removed from the synonymy of Parthenodes Guenée. Noorda moringae Tams and N. trimaculalis Amsel are transferred to Epinoorda Rebel as new combinations.
