In 1878 Dr. Arnold Forster, in his “Kleine Monographie”, erected many new genera in the family Chalcididæ that have been either overlooked by subsequent entomologists, or, at least, not included in any recent tables of the genera of this family, amongst which is a genus he calls Cratœpus placed by him in the Tetrastichoidœ, and which I am pleased to announce also occurs in America.

Hemolymph proteins of the Douglas-fir cone moth, Barbara colfaxiana (Kft.), in the year of pupation (year P) and the next year (year P + 1) were studied by visual examination and analysis of digitized images of isoelectric focussing patterns. Differences in these proteins between light and dark individuals in year P and P + 1 were not related to dormancy duration but reflected the extent of pharate-adult development. Hormone applications were more effective in changing hemolymph proteins of light insects than those of dark ones. Changes in the hemolymph proteins of light insects in year P + 1 were not very obvious by visual examination of gels but were readily detectable by digital image analysis and showed that development occurred in these insects through June-September leading to visible pigmentation differences observable in relation to dormancy commitments of these insects.

Laverna argentimaculella, n. sp.

Imago: Antennœ dark brown, slightly paler on under side. Palpi pale silvery, terminal joint in strong light appearing minutely ringed with dark blue. Head and face smooth, the former dark blue above, face pale golden-metallic, in the ♂ usually darker than in the ♀, in the latter often with bluish tinge. Thorax dark blue with metallic reflections. Fore wings with a generally “shaggy” appearance, beautifully variegated in dark and light blue and rich bronzy brown, with more or less conspicuous, irregular, appressed, silvery spots, that, at the base of the apical third, form an irregularly margined fascia, broader and more brilliant in the ♂ than in the ♀. Upon the cell, especially of the ♂, are two prominent tufts, bluish silvery at base, shading to brown, and near the outer margin two still larger tufts, almost connected, forming a ridge across the wing. Just before the fringes is an indefinitely angular, silvery streak, the apex directed outward. The pattern of coloration is so variable that it is difficult to exactly characterize it. Hind wings and abdomen rich bronzy brown, the former with pale brown fringes. Legs brown, annulate on tibiæ with two broad and on tarsi with three narrow white bands. Alar expanse, 8 mn.; length, 4 mm. A beautiful species and probably rare.

Carbon dioxide increased by 9-fold on the average the number of Tabanus quinquevittatus Wiedemann females collected in canopy traps without affecting parity rates, prevalence of sperm and fructose, and stage of terminal follicle development within nullipars, pars, or both groups together. Results were consistent whether the 2 years were pooled or considered separately.

The discovery by Mr. W. H. Edwards that Colias Hagenii is only a form of C. Eurytheme, as detailed in the Canadian Entomologist for September, while very interesting in itself, serves also to show that this genus is still in a very unsatisfactory state. That a form which so closely resembles Philodice that nine entomologists out of ten would take it for that species, should turn out to be a variety of Eurytheme, emphasizes Dr.Hagen's statement “that reliable differences between these two well known forms are still a want.” Mr. Edwards has also comet to the conclusion that Hagenii is the same as teh form previously named C. Eriphyle by him, as detailed in the November number of the Canadian Entomologist. A glance at the history of this form will be found interesting.

On June 1st, 1901, while on a mosquito hunt with Mr. J. Turner Brakeley, at Lahaway, we investigated the little pools around the head of a swamp spring. The water was very cold, and our object was, mainly, to ascertain wheter Aedes larvæ occured in such localities, where pitcher plants were in the vicinity.

In the course of our dipping I found a very odd little wriggler, altogether different from anything I had ever seen befor, and soon Mr. Brakeley found the same thing. We took only a few of them at that time, and from their minute size I assumed they must be very yound. I afterward sent a specimen to Dr. Howard, and he appeared as much at sea concerning its location as I was. It seemed to be a Culicid larva, without much doubt; but that was as far as we could get. The specimens were about an eight of an inch in length, light reddish in colour, and very hairy in appearance. The head was very broad, and from it the body taped gradually to the short obtuse anal siphon.

The compound tris (1-aziridinyl) phosphine sulphide, known by the trivial name thiotepa, has been tested against few aphids. Considerable reduction in fecundity occurred due to thiotepa treatment of the cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.) (Bonnemaison 1966). In 0.3% thiotepa-treated Aphis fabae Scop. a 90% decrease in reproductive capacity was observed by Steffan and Stüben (1976). Sharma and Thériault (1980) tested 0.5% thiotepa on various nymphal instars of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), and observed up to 83% decrease in fecundity of those treated in first and second instars. The third and fourth instar aphids were much less influenced by thiotepa. The effects of thiotepa on the adult viviparae of the pea aphid are unknown and nothing has been recorded on the transmissibility of thiotepa-caused sterility to progeny. Further to the results of Sharma and Thériault (1980) this paper describes the effects of two contact periods with 0.5% thiotepa on the adult viviparae of A. pisum and delayed effects on subsequent generations.

♀—Length 6.5 mm. Form of cinereus: Head narrower than pronotum. Vertex distinctly angulate, a little longer than half width between eyes or half the length of pronotum; nearly flat, slightly broadly depressed on either side, the edge distinctly compressed. Front a half longer than wide, nearly two and a half times the length of the clypeus, sides rather strongly incurved at antennal sockets. Clypeus gradually enlarged towards the truncate tip, its length once and a half the width at tip, Width of pronotum nearly two and a half times the length, surface neither punctured or wrinkled.

Otiocerus Wolfii, Kirby. A pale specimen of this frail little form was beaten by me from a beech tree September 3, 1888, at Lancaster, N. Y., and Mr. Uhler has kindly sent me a fully colored individual, presumably from Md., taken on the 6th of August. The antennæ in this species are very short, with a single appendage.

Two lists of Canadian Lepidoptera have been published by our Entomological Society; the first one, prepared by Mr. W. Saunders and issued in 1864, contained the names of all the Butterflies, Sphinges, and Bombyces then known to inhabit this country; the next year a second list, prepared by ourselves, was issued, containing the names of species in the remaining families of moths, and some additions to the former list. Since then a number of new species have been captured in this country, whose names may now be added to our lists; great changes have also been made in the generic nomenclature of others, and in some cases the very species has been proved to be erroneous and to require correction.
