In the course of revising the subfamily Cuculliinae of the Noctuidae, it has become obvious that many of the species have been placed in genera where they do not belong, and others have been merely “dumped” into the most convenient genus; it is to rectify the above conditions that the following genera are described.

The following brief account of the formation and growth of the Lyman Entomological Museum, and of some of the main figures associated with it, is not intended to be complete in detail. For those readers who wish further information a list of references is included. These are not referred to in the text.

Entomology began in this country, and indeed in most countries, as a direct result of the efforts and interest of amateur naturalists. The Lyman Entomological Museum began in this way. Henry Herbert Lyman was a pioneer entomologist of Canada, and although his busines commitments were extensive, he still made time to follow his primary interest, studying and collecting Lepidoptera.

The annual abundance of chewing lice (Phthiraptera) was recorded on great horned owls (Bubo virginianus (Gmelin), Aves: Strigidae) from 1994 to 2015 in Manitoba, Canada. Kurodaia magna Emerson (Amblycera: Menoponidae) had a mean annual abundance about half that for Strigiphilus oculatus (Rudow) (Ischnocera: Philopteridae). Mean intensity, rather than prevalence, explained the variation in annual abundance. Temporal variation (measured as population variability) in abundance and mean intensity were high and similar (0.62–0.67), but lower for nymph to female ratio (0.36–0.38). Temporal variation of prevalence and sex ratio were higher for K. magna (0.34–0.35) than for S. oculatus (0.21–0.22), and typical for other louse species. The high temporal variability for abundance and mean intensity suggest lower year-to-year stability than exhibited by other chewing lice, but over 80% of this variability was due to sampling error resulting from small sample sizes in some years and extreme intensities in the aggregated distributions of intensity. The remaining variation, < 20%, revealed no significant differences in annual abundance or mean intensity among years, and therefore stable populations over 22 years. Populations of 12 species of chewing lice show lower temporal variability and therefore greater stability than three other insect taxa.

Otiocerus Wolfii, Kirby. A pale specimen of this frail little form was beaten by me from a beech tree September 3, 1888, at Lancaster, N. Y., and Mr. Uhler has kindly sent me a fully colored individual, presumably from Md., taken on the 6th of August. The antennæ in this species are very short, with a single appendage.

Seventy-one species of Tabanidae from Quebec are listed.

General color light brown. Upper part of pronotum and hind femora with a reddish tinge. Face sometimes mottled. Antennæ light brown infuscated apically. The usual black band behind the eye broad and distinct, and reaching last division of pronotum, bounded below by a narrower white stripe. A broad white stripe from base of elytra connects with a white stripe at insertion of posterior femora, forming a right angle. Outside of hind femora is crossed by two indistinct dusky bands that extend upon upper edge. Lorver sulcation reddish. Knees black. Hind tibiæ blue. Elytra light brown with very small black spots in the disk.

Tetracanthella pacifica sp. n. from Coastal British Columbia is described and illustrated. A key to the Nearctic Tetracanthella species is given.

Ramakrishnaia is a south Indian genus of Pyrgomorphidae related to Colemania. A lectotype for the type species of the latter, C. sphenarioides, is here designated. Two species of Ramakrishnaia have hitherto been described: the type species, R. notabilis (for which a lectotype is here designated), and R. raoi. R. gracilis, a new species from Coorg, is described. R. raoi, on the basis of its phallic structures and external morphology, is removed to a new genus, Nilgiracris.

In January of 1924 (Can. Ent., vol. LVI, No. I, p. 2.), I created the genus Hoppingiana to receive a species of Melyrid that did not fit into any of the previous generic definitions. Of late considerable discussion has arisen over the possibility that Hoppingiana brevilabris Blais. is the true Dasytes hudsonicus of LeConte. My male specimen of hudsonicus Lec. was received from Wickham and was collected in the alpine regions of Colorado.

Three new species of Agromyza (Liriomyza, Dizygomyza and Agromyza of European workers) are presented herewith. Some of the material has been in the writers possession for a long time awaiting description. The Holotypes will eventually be deposited in the U. S. National Museum.

Calliopsis andreniformis is a panurgine bee that inhabits much, if not all, of the eastern area of the United States. It is a small inconspicuous species. The females are about 8 mm. in length, exclusive of antennae, quite robust, general color gray, abdomen fasciate, maculation luteous. The males are more slender, smaller, maculation yellow, face and legs entirely yellow.

The maple leafcutter moth (Paraclemensia acerifoliella (Fitch) (Lepidoptera: Incurvariidae) has been discovered in western Canada, feeding on saskatoon (Amelanchier alnifolia (Nuttall) Nuttall ex Roemer (Rosaceae)), a previously undocumented host. New records are detailed, and historical records are reviewed and assessed. Western populations are compared morphologically, genetically, and ecologically to populations feeding on maple (Acer Linnaeus; Sapindaceae) in eastern Canada. Paraclemensia Busck species host plants are discussed in relation to the hypothesised phylogenetic history of the genus. Although maple feeding is hypothesised to be the ancestral condition in the genus Paraclemensia, Rosaceae feeding (including Amelanchier) is hypothesised to be a derived capability of the P. acerifoliella species group.

On June 1st, 1901, while on a mosquito hunt with Mr. J. Turner Brakeley, at Lahaway, we investigated the little pools around the head of a swamp spring. The water was very cold, and our object was, mainly, to ascertain wheter Aedes larvæ occured in such localities, where pitcher plants were in the vicinity.

In the course of our dipping I found a very odd little wriggler, altogether different from anything I had ever seen befor, and soon Mr. Brakeley found the same thing. We took only a few of them at that time, and from their minute size I assumed they must be very yound. I afterward sent a specimen to Dr. Howard, and he appeared as much at sea concerning its location as I was. It seemed to be a Culicid larva, without much doubt; but that was as far as we could get. The specimens were about an eight of an inch in length, light reddish in colour, and very hairy in appearance. The head was very broad, and from it the body taped gradually to the short obtuse anal siphon.

This paper is the first of a series in which it is proposed, by members of the edirorial staff alternately, to describe some of our more common insects, to illustrate them with suitable cuts, and to make the descriptions of so plain a character that the most unscientific reader may be able readily to comprehend their meaning. Since it is one of our aims in publishing the Entomologist to popularize our favorite science, we shall offer no apology for introducing into our journal these readable papers, in which much material may from time to time appear, which, to the scientific reader, may look stale and uninviting.

The efficacy of seven chemical insecticides, five commercial preparations of Bacillus thuringiensis, and two preparations containing diatom dust were tested against the European skipper, Thymelicus lineola (Ochs.), under field conditions. Satisfactory control was obtained with carbaryl, carbofuran, methomyl, permethrin, trichlorfon, Dipel 45B(=Dipel SC), Dipel WP, Thuricide 26B, Thuricide HPC, and Novabac 3 while dimethoate, chlorpyrifos, and the diatom dusts afforded little or no foliage protection. While larval mortality occurred less rapidly when B. thuringiensis preparations were applied, their use is strongly recommended as they afford the same degree of foliage protection as chemical insecticides and diminish possible undesirable off-target effects.
