The incorporation of various bulk agents by substitution of an equivalent amount of the basal mixture was studied in terms of protein digestibility, growth performance and body composition in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) juveniles. During the growth trial, triplicate groups of 40 seabass (mean initial weight: 7.0 g) were grown in seawater (salinity: 35; temperature: 18 °C) over 60 days. Fish were hand-fed, three times a day, one of seven experimental diets. Bulk agents tested at 10 or 20 % level of incorporation were silica, cellulose and a natural zeolite (chabamin). Feeding rates were adjusted in proportion to the percent dilution of the control diet without bulk incorporation. The incorporation of the bulk agents, at a 10 and 20 % level, did not affect protein digestibility or growth performance. Dietary bulk incorporation reduced feed efficiency values, particularly at the 20 % incorporation level. However, this reduction was mostly caused by the dietary nutrient dilution of the bulk-incorporated diets, rather than by a negative effect of the bulk agents as dietary ingredients. In comparison to the control treatment, bulk incorporation at 10 and 20 % level did not affect protein retention values. When compared with the control diet, 20 % bulk agent incorporation changed the evacuation profile of faeces and increased faecal egestion time.

The aim of the present study is to test the extent to which different intensities of continuous additional light affect somatic growth and sexual maturation in Atlantic salmon postsmolts in sea cages. Postsmolts (9 200 individuals) were randomly distributed among four commercial sized sea cages and exposed to either natural light or natural light + continuous additional light of low, medium or high intensity from January to June. In May the high light intensity group had a signiticantly higher mean live body weight than the other groups, and at the end of the experiment in June, all groups differed in mean gutted weight. There was apositive logarithmic regression between level of light intensity exposure during night and mean gutted weight. A small proportion of fish matured sexually (after 1.5 years in seawater) in the natural light group, whereas no maturation was detected in the light groups. These results suggests that to affect growth and proportion or maturation in Atlantic salmon by additional light, there might be different threshold values of light intensity.

We analysed Baltic Sea pelagic fish (herring and sprat) spatial and temporal distribution, size distribution at different depths and time of the day and diel feeding pattern. In 1995 the study area was investigated by acoustic survey for 3 d, 3, 4 and 11 October, to investigate spatial and temporal distribution of pelagic fish. The area was divided in four different transects forming a survey quadrate of 15 nautical miles of side. The survey quadrate was ensonified each day four times in the 24 h. In 1997 the acoustic survey was conducted in the same area and in the same week of the year to analyse the diel feeding cycle of herring and sprat and their size distribution by depth and time of the day using pelagic trawls. Fish abundance, from 1995 survey, was statistically different among days and survey quadrates. However, from our data it is not clear whether the variation stems from random dispersion or directed movements occurring at the temporal small-scale. Pelagic fish were dispersed during the night at the surface and aggregated during the day at the bottom. They aggregated at dawn and dispersed at dusk at the surface. For herring this distribution pattern coincided with peaks of stomach fullness analysed in the 1997 survey, while sprat seemed to continue feeding during the whole day time. Larger herring were deeper in the water column than smaller individuals. Diel vertical migrations (DVM) of pelagic fish likely mirrored zooplankton diel vertical movements and it was reasonably in response to optimal predation conditions in the sea and possibly intertwined with predation avoidance and bioenergetic optimisation.

Seagrass beds play an important role in coastal ecosystems as primary producers and providers of habitat and environmental structure. Therefore, mapping seagrass beds is indispensable in the management and conservation of sound littoral ecosystems, and in the development of sustainable fisheries in coastal waters. Multi-beam sonar is often used to map bottom topography. We developed a mapping method to quantify the volume of seagrass using a multi-beam sonar. Seagrass beds were scanned with the multi-beam sonar and quadrat sampled to verify the distribution of seagrasses. We used software to discriminate seagrass signals from echoes to obtain a topographic profile of the bottom without seagrass; this was then subtracted from the topography including the seagrass. We then mapped seagrass distribution, calculated seagrass volume, and estimated biomass using volume and quadrat samples. We applied these methods to map a seagrass bed of Zostera caulescens in Otsuchi Bay, on the Sanriku Coast of Japan, during the growing season of 2001. A transducer was attached to a boat (one gross ton) equipped with a differential-GPS, a motion sensor, and a gyrocompass. The vessel completed a grid survey scanning whole seagrass bed with an area of 115 m × 156 m at bottom depths between 2 and 8 m within about 40 min when traveling at a speed of 1.5 m s–1 (3 knots). The multi-beam sonar was able to visualize three-dimensional seagrass distribution without interpolation and easily to estimate area and volume occupied by the seagrass using hydrography software. The results indicated that Z. caulescens was distributed at bottom depths of 6–7 m with a surface area of 3 628 m2 and a volume of 1 368 m3. The mean biomass of above- and below-ground parts of seagrass were estimated to be 28.6 gDW m–2 (range 26.6–30.9) and 15.9 gDW m–2 (range 14.1–17.7). Our study demonstrated that multi-beam sonar is effective for mapping and quantifying the spatial distribution of seagrass beds, and for visualizing the landscape of the seagrass canopy.

The present paper aims at identifying and assessing indicators of the effects of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in coral reef regions, based on a bibliography review in ecology, economics and social sciences. First the various effects studied within each of these domains and the variables used to measure them were censused. Potential ecological indicators were assessed through their link with the question used (here termed “relevance”) and their “effectiveness” which encompasses the issues of precision, accuracy and statistical power. Relevance and effectiveness were respectively measured by the frequency of use of each indicator and the proportion of significant results in the reviewed articles. For social and economic effects, the approach was not possible due to the low number of references; we thus discussed the issue of finding appropriate indicators for those fields. Results indicate: 1- the unbalance in literature between disciplines; 2- the need for protocols and methodologies which include controls in order to assess MPA effects; 3- an important proportion of ecological indicators with low effectiveness; 4- the large number of ecological effects still not studied or not demonstrated at present.

The gametogenic cycle and the reproductive effort of the blacklip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, cultivated in Takapoto lagoon were studied for a 1-year period (March 1997–April 1998) by bimonthly observations of gonadal sections, dry tissue weights and gonadal index in a population of pearl oyster composed of three age-groups. Pearl oysters attained sexual maturity in the end of their first year (height ≈ 40 mm), implying that P. margaritifera is a late-maturing species in comparison with other Pteriidae. This species was also confirmed to be a marked protandrous successive hermaphrodite in culture, with 100 % of males at first maturity and 75 % in older pearl oyster (height > 120 mm). The general pattern of gametogenic activity, fairly synchronous in both sexes, was comparable with that of other tropical bivalves: reproduction occurs continuously throughout the year with a maximal activity during the warm season (November–May). No resting period was observed. Quantitative growth data showed that P. margaritifera exhibits an annual synchronised polymodal spawning pattern, with two spawning peaks in age-group I (height ≈ 70 mm) and five in age-groups II (height ≈ 100 mm) and III (height ≈ 120 mm). Spawning was sometimes incomplete, nevertheless a clear relationship between gamete production (PR, g) and size (height H, mm) was obtained: PR = 5.26 × 10–7 H2.91 (R[sup2 ] = 0.99, P < 0.05). Estimation of PR was used to calculate the annual reproductive effort in P. margaritifera. Reproductive effort (%) was similar to those calculated for temperate species and showed a progressive increase with the age of pearl oyster, from 7 % in age-group I to 38 % in age-group III. This study showed that, in a fairly stable tropical environment such as the Takapoto lagoon, P. margaritifera is a multiple spawner, which uses an opportunistic reproductive strategy, allowing investment, all year around, of any surplus energy into gamete production. Surplus energy is ensured by the high pumping rates developed by this non-symbiotic bivalve to succeed in low seston conditions.

Traditional telemetry methods have been used to quantify the horizontal and vertical displacement of marine species, but are unable to identify specific physical activities such as swimming or gliding, resting, foraging, or spawning. We tested the utility of an acceleration data logger to quantify activity patterns of three captive whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus) in an enclosed lagoon using internal and external attachment methods. Data obtained using both attachment methods allowed swimming and resting behavior to be differentiated. All sharks showed constant swimming for 5–14 hours post-tagging before adopting a pattern of daytime rest and nocturnal activity throughout the 6–16 day deployments. Sharks showed a diel activity pattern, spending 10–24% of their time swimming during the day, and 42–67% swimming at night. Overall, sharks spent an average of 35 ± 11% (mean ± SD) of their time swimming. Mean tailbeat frequency was found to be 0.89 ± 0.03 beats s−1 in one shark for which it was measured. Respirometry experiments that measured the metabolic rate of two neonate whitetips showed significantly higher metabolic rates at night compared to the day. When taken in conjunction with the acceleration data, these results suggest that whitetips are nocturnally active and show diel circadian rhythms shortly after birth. Our study demonstrates that acceleration data loggers can be used to quantify activity patterns and offer promise for quantifying energy budgets of various reef sharks both in captivity and in the field.

Domesticated/captive stocks and wild/feral populations of common carp from Europe, Central Asia and East/South-East Asia were examined for allozyme (23 populations), microsatellite (11 populations) and mitochondrial DNA (21 populations) variation. Allozyme variability (1.06–1.81 alleles per locus, expected heterozygosity 0.006–0.136 at 16 loci) was much lower than microsatellite variability (2.5–14.0 alleles per locus, expected heterozygosity 0.426–0.887 at four loci). Differences in variability between domesticated/captive stocks and wild-caught ones were more pronounced at microsatellite loci than at allozyme loci, suggesting that microsatellites are better suited to detect population bottlenecks and loss of variation due to inbreeding. All but one European population were fixed for a single composite mtDNA haplotype, which also dominated in Central Asia but was completely missing in East/South-East Asia, indicating a single origin of European carp in Central Asia. All three classes of genetic markers clustered populations into two highly divergent groups: Europe/Central Asia and East/South-East Asia. Hierarchical partition of genetic diversity showed that for microsatellite loci most of variation was due to the within-population component while the highest proportion of mtDNA variation and substantial proportion of allozyme variation was accounted for by differences between geographical regions. Genetic data support the subspecies status of C. c. carpio assigned to the European carp and C. c. haematopterus assigned to the East/South-East Asian carp but do not justify a separate subspecies status (C. c. aralensis) for the Central Asian carp. As demonstrated for a wild/feral carp population from R. Danube, Germany, the genetic markers used in our study may be effectively applied to detect mixing and introgression of intra-species units in the presence of sufficient genetic differentiation.

Models of simulated schools have been used to determine the intrinsic variability in echotraces due to beam pattern effect. This work concerns only morphometric and energetic parameters that can be extracted from echotraces. It appears that dST, the difference between school density and processing threshold is a key parameter, which directly influences the concerned detection angles. Relations, taking into account dST but also, Nbi, the relative school length image compared to the beam width, have been settled for the calculation of length and density corrections. In most cases, corrected values are obtained with errors less than respectively 5% for length and 0.5 dB for density (reverberation index), provided that the Nbi value is 1.5 or more. When Nbi is less than 1, it seems impossible to bring some pertinent corrections. The school energy does not need any correction. It is recommended to use threshold values not too low, to avoid detection through the side lobes. However this setting must be determined in order to obtain dST values greater than 10 dB. Thresholds between –60 and –65 dB seem adequate, at least for schools volume backscattering strength (VBS, Sv) values commonly encountered in the Bay of Biscay.

The reaction of fish induced by a trawling vessel was measured using the Bergen Acoustic Buoy. It is a free-floating buoy with a split beam echo sounder system. Individual fish trajectories were obtained by target tracking methods, and average swimming velocities as a function of depth and time before and after passage of the vessel was calculated. A measure for the change in behaviour was applied, showing a significant response during and after propeller passage. The change in horizontal displacement speed is significant at all depths, while the change in vertical displacement velocity is significant at all but one layer of depth. The horizontal reaction seems to occur a bit later than the diving reaction. After the main response, a slightly higher mean horizontal displacement speed was observed for the deepest layers. This indicates a change in the fish state after being exposed to the vessel/gear.

The power of modern research vessels using diesel engines means significant levels of noise may be radiated underwater. At low frequencies a surveying vessel must not cause fish avoidance behaviour when it is using trawl or acoustic assessment methods. All the main mechanisms that form the essential propulsion system are described and discussed in terms of underwater radiated noise. Diesel engines, generators and propulsion motors contribute significantly to the low frequency spectrum and an illustration is given of underwater noise when an unsuitable propulsion system is used. Avoidance behaviour by a herring school is shown due to a noisy vessel, by contrast there is an example of no reaction of herring to a noise-reduced vessel. Propellers are major sources of both low and high frequency noise. The latter should not reduce echo sounder detection range, nor contaminate echo integrator recordings. Underwater noise levels from four vessels with different machinery and propulsion characteristics are seen in relation to ambient noise levels at 18 kHz. Fish detection is examined in relation to sea background noise and vessel self-noise. Calculated detection ranges for fish target strength classes from –30 to –60 dB at 38 kHz are shown for six vessels travelling at 11 knots, based on self-noise measurements. Echo sounder noise levels from several vessels at 120 and 200 kHz are tabulated. Beyond 100 kHz the effect of vessel-radiated noise is usually insignificant; levels up to that frequency are proposed in the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) Cooperative Research Report No. 209 of 1995.

A trial was carried out to compare the growth performance, body composition and apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) of diets by seabass, with an initial weight of 13.5 g, fed diets including fish meal (68.6 % of the dietary protein) or soybean meal (65.6 % of the dietary protein) as the main protein sources. Microbial phytase was added to the soybean meal based diet (1 000 and 2 000 IU·kg−1) and to the fish meal based diet (2 000 IU·kg−1) in order to study its effect on phosphorus utilisation. Results of this trial showed that growth rate, feed conversion and nitrogen retention were significantly better in fish fed the fish meal based diet. Energy retention was similar in both groups. ADC of protein were similar among groups. ADC of phosphorus was significantly higher in the fish meal based diet (63 %) than in the soybean meal based diet (25 %). Supplementation of the fish meal based diet with microbial phytase did not improve the ADC of phosphorus, while in the soybean meal based diet the inclusion of 1 000 and 2 000 IU·kg−1 of microbial phytase significantly increased the ADC of phosphorus to 71.5 % and 79.8 %, respectively. It is concluded that for practical purposes supplementation of diets with microbial phytase may prove valuable in diets including high levels of plant feedstuffs.

There are currently at least six commercial fisheries harvesting six different species of euphausiid, or krill: Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), fished in the Antarctic; North Pacific krill (Euphausia pacifica), fished off Japan and off western Canada; Euphausia nana, fished off the coast of Japan; Thysanoessa inermis, fished off the coast of Japan and off eastern Canada; and Thysanoessa raschii and Meganyctiphanes norvegica which have been experimentally harvested off eastern Canada. The current world catch of all species of krill is over 150 000 tonnes per annum but few fisheries are being exploited to their maximum theoretical potential. The size of the world krill harvest is currently limited by lack of demand, although some fisheries are being deliberately managed at low levels because of ecological concerns. We have outlined the history of these krill fisheries to determine where there are common trends and issues which will affect their future development. Krill products are currently mostly used for the aquaculture and sport fishing market but considerable effort has also been put into developing products for human consumption, partiularly from Antarctic krill. The future development of krill fisheries is examined in the light of information on trends in krill products which include pharmaceutical and industrial uses in addition to nutritional products. Because of the central ecological role of krill in many marine ecosystems, the subject of krill harvesting is a sensitive issue and krill fisheries require careful management. This requirement has spawned an innovative international management regime in the Antarctic - the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) - which has developed procedures for managing the harvest of Antarctic krill that may be applicable to other fisheries. The common problems of managing krill fisheries are outlined particularly those relating to the role of krill in many coastal ecosystems, and as prey for many other species which are commercially fished.

The incorporation of an attractant mixture by substitution of an equivalent amount of basal dietary mixture was studied in terms of feed intake and growth performance in European seabass juveniles (mean initial weight : 17 g) fed plant-protein rich diets during 21 days. Three diets had as main protein sources; fish meal, or one of two soy protein concentrates (S and E). To the basal mixture of these last two diets, as well as to a corn-gluten based diet, an attractant amino acid mixture was added at a 2.5% level. Daily feed intake was measured throughout the experimental period. Feed intake and weight gain were highest in seabass fed the fish meal based diet. In those fed the soy protein concentrate diets, the addition of the attractant mixture improved growth significantly; voluntary feed intake and feed efficiency were also ameliorated in thesegroups. In terms of growth, feed intake and protein utilisation, lowest values were found in fish fed with the corn-gluten rich diet, supplemented with the amino acid mixture.

Benthic foraminifera are used as potential bio-indicators of pollution due to the “Erika” oil spill. The foraminiferal assemblages from a site situated on the tidal mudflat of the southern Bay of Bourgneuf (Vendée, France) have been sampled 19 times on a monthly/bimonthly scale. The field study reveals uncommon low densities and poor faunas in the first 21 months of the survey. In order to understand the effect of the “Erika” fuel, foraminiferal cultures with 0 to 72.0 mg per 100 ml of “Erika” oil were maintained in controlled conditions in the laboratory. In the laboratory, an experiment with 5.5 mg per 100 ml of oil shows morphological abnormalities, cellular modifications and a low rate of reproduction. These first results confirm the potential toxicity of the fuel No. 2 from “Erika” and the sensitivity of foraminifera to this pollutant.

A sperm cryopreservation protocol adapted from turbot, was tested on sea bass using either 250-μL straws or 1.5-mL cryovials. A dilution to 1/3 in Mounib's extender and a cooling rate of −65 °C·min−1 allowed frozen sperm to recover an initial motility similar to that of fresh sperm at thawing; however, significant differences in motility (P < 0.001, n = 10 fish semen) were observed at further post-activation times, the motility decrease being faster in thawed sperm. At the experimental scale, triplicate inseminations of 2-mL aliquots (approximately 2 000 eggs) showed a significant fertility decay of thawed sperm compared to that of fresh sperm (P < 0.01, n = 12 fish semen) when a discriminating 35·103 spermatozoa to egg ratio was applied. When 70·103 and 200·103 spermatozoa per egg were provided in the same experimental conditions, no significant difference appeared between the fertilisation rates of fresh and thawed sperm. In order to validate the procedure for production or cryobank purpose, a scaled-up protocol was established. Two and 50 mL batches of eggs (approximately 2·103 and 50·103 eggs, respectively) were inseminated in triplicate using either fresh or thawed individual sperms of 5 males with 200·103 spermatozoa per egg. The mean fertility decreased by 23.5 % due to cryopreservation. This decline was explained by the loss of fertility of only one sperm, and only in large-volume conditions, probably due to the delay of use after thawing.

An estuary is an ecotone. It plays various vital roles in the functioning of the different fish species encountered. Each estuary has its own geographical, hydraulic, sedimentological and biological characteristics. These specific features influence the makeup and structure of the fish assemblages and the dynamics of the fish populations. The Gironde estuary is the biggest estuary in France and one of the largest in Europe. It is considered to be relatively unspoilt. The aim of this study is to provide an initial reference document on the specific composition of its fish assemblage. This study establishes a list of the fish species sampled by two different and complementary methods which have been regularly undertaken since 1979. A typology is recognized according to a series of ecological criteria. The relative proportion of fish species that spend all their life cycle in the Gironde estuary is very small. Moreover, the Gironde would appear to be the European estuary with the largest migratory amphihaline fish assemblage. Considering the study made by Elliott and Dewailly (1995), the Gironde estuarine fish population can be compared to those of 17 other European estuaries. The classification we obtained, raised a number of questions on the particularities of estuarine environment, with regard to ecological diagnostics and comparisons. Important points include the need for an inter-calibration of sampling practices, the relevance of taking into account the physical dimension of the environment (tidal range, upstream limit of saline intrusion, etc.), the degree of anthropogenic influence and its evolution.

The aim of the work presented in this paper was to assess the relative efficiency of the GOC 73 sampling trawl used for the Mediterranean international trawl survey programme (MEDITS) compared with that of a typical Italian commercial trawl. The latter was chosen because it is commonly used by fishermen in the central Adriatic, where the experiment was conducted, and therefore appeared as the best possible sampler of the commercial species present in those areas. Moreover, this trawl is similar to the various trawls used for the Italian national survey programme (GRUND). Four fishing trips were conducted between 1996 and 1997 in different areas and seasons to sample different species. Each trip was conducted in the same fishing area. A codend cover mounted on the commercial trawl ensured that the codends of the two nets had the same mesh opening. The two trawls were alternated daily. Net geometry (horizontal and vertical net opening) was measured during all tows. Catch data were converted into abundance per swept area before comparing the trawls. Efficiency comparisons were performed on ten fish species, one crustacean and four molluscs belonging to the MEDITS list of main reference species. The MEDITS trawl was significantly less efficient in terms of both weight and numbers of individuals fished for hake (Merluccius merluccius), common sole (Solea vulgaris) and Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus). A highly significant difference in favour of the commercial trawl was found in the weight, but not the numbers, of common pandora (Pagellus erythrinus). Efficiency differences were negligible for red mullet (Mullus barbatus), while the MEDITS trawl was significantly more efficient for the numbers of Atlantic horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus). For all the other main reference species differences were not significant. The commercial trawl was more efficient for large individuals of some species. The relative efficiency of the MEDITS trawl was especially low for small-size classes of N. norvegicus. The results confirm the lower efficiency of the MEDITS compared with the commercial Italian trawl for benthic species, and its greater efficiency for some others released from the bottom as well as for the pelagic ones. These data allow the results of the MEDITS surveys to be compared with those of the GRUND programme and with commercial-fleet catches in areas where the commercial trawls used are similar to the one studied here.

The common dentex (Dentex dentex) is a sparid fish which is considered a suitable candidate for Mediterranean aquaculture. A seven-weeks feeding trial was conducted over the summer period with common dentex, sea bream (Sparus aurata) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). All three species were fed to visual satiety with two practical diets with varying crude protein and crude fat levels (55 % protein, 9 % lipids; 46 % protein, 17 % lipids). The initial body weights were 8.2, 11.6 and 17.3 g for common dentex, sea bass and sea bream, respectively. In all cases, specific growth rates were not significantly affected by dietary treatment, but they varied among species (sea bass 1.7-1.8 %; sea bream 2.1-2.3 %; common dentex 3.1-3.2 %). When comparisons between fish species were made, we observed that the increase in growth rates was linked to a decrease of the whole body fat content, as a consequence of a greater utilisation of dietary lipids as energy substrates. Furthermore, in common dentex, the 17 % lipid diet was able to improve protein retention, but this diet effect was less significant in sea bream and sea bass. In contrast to sea bream, the 17 % lipid diet did not up-regulate plasma GH levels in common dentex, which provides additional evidence for a more efficient utilisation of dietary lipids.

The proportion of vibrio E, dominant in healthy turbot larvae, was artificially increased in the rotifer enrichment medium. The main effect of this vibrio enrichment was to improve the resistance of larval turbot challenged with a pathogenic strain of Vibrio splendidus, vibrio P. The improvement of the survival rates was significant with 1.5 × 106 CFU of vibrio E added per ml of enrichment medium, and it was still maximum at the highest dose tested (5 × 107 CFU.ml−1; 80 ± 2% of survivors after 48 h of challenge, versus 50 ± 2% for the control group).

Further in vitro characterisation showed that vibrio E was able to grow in the presence of the chelating agents EDDHA and EDTA, while producing siderophore, as revealed by chrome azurol S dyeing. The pathogenic vibrio P did not grow on iron-depleted medium, and it did not seem to produce siderophore. Consequently, a second experiment attempted to appraise the role of iron availability in the interaction between the pathogenic and probiotic vibrios. To this end, turbot larvae were fed with rotifers treated by the bacterial siderophore deferoxamine. This treatment significantly increased the resistance of larvae chal-lenged with vibrio P in comparison with the control group, but to a lesser extent than the group enriched with vibrio E. There was also an increase of the growth rate due to either the siderophore treatment or thevibrio enrichment, as well. No further improvement was observed when the rotifers were simultaneously both treated and enriched. It was concluded that the probiotic effect of vibrio E may be at least partly due to competition for iron with the pathogen.
