Microplastic release in Antarctica is an issue of increasing concern, despite the limited human presence in the region. This study estimates the annual release of microplastics from the wastewaters of scientific facilities through the use of personal care products and laundering. Furthermore, it analyses the most cost-efficient policy interventions to target this pollution. The study has estimated a potential release of 238 kg per year, which is negligible on a continental scale but could have substantial local environmental impacts. A comprehensive cost-efficiency analysis demonstrates that microplastic release can be effectively mitigated through low-cost preventative measures, such as installing washing machine filters and banning hygiene products containing microbeads. Furthermore, the implementation of wastewater treatment systems is suggested as a crucial and long-term cost-effective solution for treating wastewater effluent and removing other pollutants from the Antarctic region. These results provide a framework to inform policy decisions on microplastic release in Antarctica and lay the foundation for improved environmental protection strategies in this sensitive region.

Antarctic glaciers have been considered classically uninhabited. However, they constitute an authentic biome and are populated by microorganisms that not only survive in them but also maintain an active metabolism. The South Shetland archipelago is a good study model to observe the diversity and evolution of the microbial populations that inhabit its glaciers. From a geological point of view, this archipelago is of considerable interest due to the intense and relatively recent volcanic eruptions on Deception Island. Additionally, it has been a place of transit for human and animal populations over time. All of these factors have influenced the composition and diversity of the microbial communities inhabiting the glacial ice. Among these microorganisms, a great diversity of bacteria, archaea, viruses and microeukaryotes such as algae and unicellular fungi have been identified thanks to high-throughput technologies. These cold-adapted microorganisms develop molecular mechanisms of adaptation to the extreme environment they inhabit and contribute to global energy cycles through the processing of organic and inorganic compounds. This review summarizes current knowledge on the biodiversity, ecology and molecular mechanisms of adaptation of cold-adapted microorganisms, and it details the specific characteristics of the microbial populations housed in the Antarctic glaciers in the South Shetland archipelago.

As a result of analysis of the ice cover, geological structure and tectonics of the underlying rocks in the Lake Vostok area of Antarctica, a layered sub-horizontal structure of the ice cover and a distribution of the parameters of the ice composition were established. The physical and mechanical properties of the underlying rocks were determined experimentally. Complex tectonics revealed an increase in geothermal flow in the Vostok Basin region, which plays a role in the evolution of the Earth's crust and in shaping the morphology of its physical properties. A three-dimensional geomechanical model of the unified system ‘glacier-Lake Vostok-bedrock ’ was constructed and investigated. Regularities in the changes to the stress-strain state were revealed. Zones of development of plastic deformation in the ice cover along the perimeter of Lake Vostok and their distribution over the lake were established, which were confirmed by results from field observations. Modelling of geomechanical processes shows that the change in the mechanical state of the Earth's crust, taking into account the creep deformation of the ice sheet, relates more to nonlinear dynamic systems, which are characterized by unstable changes and should be considered as fractal systems.

The Antarctic active volcano Deception Island has been the subject of extensive geological, geophysical and geomorphological research, including studies on its volcanic history. Since the initial geoscientific research, many authors have included lineament traces (in general considered as faults) in the maps, schemes and figures accompanying their publications. In the last 3 decades, several papers have contributed to improving our understanding of the volcano’s structure. In some cases, the fracture network was identified, measured and analysed and general models of the island’s structure were developed. However, the various authors have not always used consistent methodologies for lineament mapping, presenting significant disparities in the obtained results. This paper analyses previously interpreted lineaments and integrates existing geophysical, geological and morphostructural evidence, along with original field data, to establish a morphostructural model through a coherence and uncertainty analysis. The lineaments determined on Deception Island exhibit three preferred directions: NE-SW, ESE-WSW and SSE-NNW. However, the fractures measured in the field generally show a radial distribution, although there are two preferred directions: NNE-SSW and SE-NW. A synthetic map of Deception Island’s lineaments is presented, indicating which are the lineaments that should be considered tectonic-volcanic fractures among the other existing lineaments.

This work provides a comprehensive examination of microplastic air pollution in Antarctica. Due to atmospheric microplastics’ emerging importance, analytical procedures and health effects are discussed. Microplastic pollution poses an increasing threat to the unique and delicate Antarctic ecosystem, potentially triggering harmful consequences not only for the local ecosystem and fauna, but also for human health and well-being, given the severe implications of microplastic pollution for global scenarios such as imminent worldwide warming and the melting of polar ice. Numerous investigations have now exposed the extent of microplastic pollution in the Antarctic and the prevalence of both nano- and microplastics in this region, a significant storehouse of the planet’s freshwater. This work also highlights the challenges of assessing the hazards that microplastics, particularly the nanoscale variants, may pose to human health and life maintenance. The results of this work suggest that global mechanisms of microplastic pollution mitigation are critical to microplastic transportation to the Antarctic reaches. This overview provides a better understanding of microplastic pollution in Antarctica while highlighting the urgency of more comprehensive research in this area to elucidate more precisely the short-, medium- and long-term effects of the arrival of these emerging contaminants in the Antarctic.

Marine microorganisms play a crucial role in biogeochemical cycles, especially in the surface microlayer (SML), which differs from adjacent subsurface waters (SSW). In this study, we sampled the SML and SSW at 20 sites along the western Antarctic Peninsula during the summers of 2015 and 2019, examining microbial, viral and environmental differences. We focused on phototrophic protists, specifically Phaeocystis-like species, known for their high dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP) contents, which can be released through viral lysis. DMSP is a precursor to dimethylsulphide (DMS), a gas influencing Earth’s climate. We hypothesized a significant relationship between Phaeocystis-like abundance and DMSP concentration, with strong interactions with their specific viruses (V4) in the SML. Most biotic variables showed higher mean values in the SML, although these differences often were not statistically significant. DMSP concentrations correlated with Phaeocystis-like species abundance in both layers (R2 = 0.482, P ≤ 0.01; R2 = 0.532, P ≤ 0.01, respectively), whereas V4 abundance significantly correlated with Phaeocystis-like species only in the SML (R2 = 0.572, P ≤ 0.01). These results suggest stronger interactions between viruses and DMSP-rich hosts in the SML, potentially increasing DMS emissions to the atmosphere and impacting climate regulation.

Pigmentation and colouration are important to animal fitness. Colourations convey important information and impact predation risk, thermoregulation and mate selection. There are many cases of hypopigmentation across the animal kingdom, and leucism is a common form. We observed a Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddellii) pup with cream-coloured fur, light skin and white nails multiple times in 2022 in Erebus Bay, Antarctica. The pup was observed 1 year later as a generally healthy yearling. This is the first documentation of a leucistic seal within this well-studied population and the second documentation of such colouration in this species. This seal offers a potential opportunity to observe the effects of hypopigmentation in Antarctic true seals.

Continuous permafrost is present across the McMurdo Dry Valleys of southern Victoria Land, Antarctica. While summer active-layer thaw is common in the low-elevation portions of the Dry Valleys, active layers have not significantly thickened over time. However, in some locations, coastal Antarctic permafrost has begun to warm. Here, based on soil and meteorological measurements from 1993 to 2023, we show that wintertime soil temperatures have increased across multiple sites in the Dry Valleys, at rates exceeding the pace of summer soil warming. Linear warming trends over time are significant (P < 0.05) at six of seven soil monitoring sites. Winter warming is strongly correlated with increased numbers of down-valley wind events (Foehn/katabatics), but it may also be driven by increased incident longwave radiation at some stations (although winter longwave increase is not significant over time). While down-valley wind events increase winter warming, when down-valley wind events are excluded from the record, winter soil warming remains persistent and significant, suggesting that Antarctic soils are experiencing less cold winters over time in response to regional warming. Together, these observations suggest that some Antarctic permafrost may be approaching a transition to discontinuous permafrost in some regions as winter freezing intensity is reduced over time.

Pygoscelis penguins are valuable indicators of the effects of rapid warming in the Antarctic Peninsula. In the western Antarctic Peninsula, Adélie penguins show a declining population trend, whereas gentoo penguins are expanding. The notably low reproductive success of Adélie but not gentoo penguins at Ardley Island during the 2023/2024 breeding season provided an opportunity to explore the potential effects of weather conditions and food availability as possible determinants of reproductive output. We explore associations between reproductive output, air temperature, wind speed, wind chill temperature and accumulated rain and snow. As a proxy for food availability, we used data of penguins’ foraging trips, which reflect krill abundance. A late-winter storm at the end of October 2023 led to a record-low wind chill temperature and sustained snow cover, negatively affecting the number of eggs that hatched successfully and/or the number of chicks that survived the first days after hatching. The effects were similar for both species, yet for gentoo penguins chick survival in the late stage of the chick-rearing phase was remarkably higher, possibly due to high food availability and a longer nestling period. As previously suggested, the greater plasticity of gentoo penguins may allow them to mitigate the negative effects of environmental variability, potentially explaining this divergent breeding success despite unusually harsh meteorological conditions.

Submarine landforms in polar fjords provide essential insights into glacier responses to climate change in the Maritime Antarctic. This work aims to reconstruct the groundline of a palaeo-ice stream throughout the Holocene in Admiralty Bay, King George Island. The landforms were investigated using multi-resolution topobathymetric data based on seismic and multibeam surveys. The inner sector features shallow moraine banks and elongated glacial lineations, in contrast to the deeper moraine banks observed in the middle and outer regions of the fjord. Elongated glacial lineations indicate a north-east to south-west ice flow and a wet-based thermal regime. At ~9000 years bp, the grounding line was at the Admiralty Bay fjord’s mouth. In the middle of the fjord, a prominent morainal bank reveals the palaeoglacier’s grounding line. The grounding line significantly changed position after this stillstand in response to climatic variability (Mid-Holocene, at 4500–2800 years bp) and was conditioned by the deep bathymetry. The continued retreat of the ice in the Holocene possibly led to a division of the palaeo-ice stream into outlets or tidewater glaciers. MB7 and MB9 indicate the position of the grounding line during a major stillstand at the end of the inlets. The bedrock topography and fjord geometry influenced the deglaciation pattern of Dobrowolski Glacier in Martel Inlet, and the moraine banks recorded two final major stillstands. The retreat rates in Martel Inlet have increased due to the loss of anchoring points and rising temperatures after the Neoglacial period. The morainal banks present in the proximal environments at Martel Inlet are smaller, discontinuous and spaced, indicating the retreat behaviour in the last 7 decades.

The use of seismic airguns has an environmental impact that is especially intense in relation to marine mammals. As a result, new techniques are being explored to replace or complement this tool. In this study, we test our ability to obtain seismic information about the shallow seafloor structure using fin whale songs as an alternative seismic source. We analyse data collected by ocean-bottom seismometers deployed around Orca volcano in the Bransfield Strait, Antarctica, in 2019. We detected fin whale calls and designed an algorithm to calculate their locations and origin times. We used a relative approach to reduce location uncertainty based on the similarity of waveforms between consecutive calls. We were able to calculate the trajectory of a fin whale that crossed over Orca volcano. Strikingly, the whale path coincided partially with a multi-channel seismic profile carried out with airgun shots. This coincidence allowed us to investigate the performance of the whale calls as seismic sources, comparing them to the almost co-located airgun profile. We constructed receiver gathers using both whale calls and airgun shots. The main features of the whale call sections are consistent with the results obtained using the airgun source. We conclude that although this method has some drawbacks, such as the unpredictable behaviour of whales and the smaller power and lower resolution capabilities of the whale calls compared to the airgun surveys, it is still a feasible alternative as a complement for active-source seismic studies in the marine environment.

Airborne investigations are a keystone for understanding the Antarctic environment across many scientific disciplines. Over the past decade and more, the use of drones has been proposed as a means to enhance this airborne capability. Small quadcopter/multi-rotor drones, typically flown within visual line of sight, have become a well-established and routinely deployed technology. However, larger fixed-wing uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) capable of beyond-visual-line-of-sight missions similar to traditional crewed aircraft have not been routinely deployed. Here, we report on the first deployment of a large (10 m wingspan) UAV for scientific data collection from Rothera Research Station, Antarctica. The platform, a Windracers Ultra, flew 2978 km over 25 missions, collecting a range of scientific observations including visual and hyperspectral imagery, atmospheric turbulence data and gravity and magnetic data. All science missions were carried out beyond visual line of sight and were up to 2.25 h/260 km long. Missions included coordination with and operation alongside crewed aircraft. Our field season has successfully demonstrated that large UAVs can play a significant role in Antarctic data collection, working alongside crewed aviation to improve our understanding of Antarctica.

The Bransfield Strait stands out as one of the most accessible places to study Antarctic submarine volcanism, hosting seven active principal submarine volcanic edifices (Edifices A, B and C, Three Sisters, Orca, Hook Ridge, G Ridge) and ~100 smaller seamounts. Only two of them have names (Eastern and Western Seamounts), and ~80 are grouped into two named areas: Spanish Rise and Gibbs Rise. During recent decades, numerous studies have assigned different names to the same volcanic edifices, leading to confusion. Only one of them, Orca, is formally registered in the Scientific Committee of Antarctic Research Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica, which is the catalogue collecting all of the official location names in Antarctica. A unified toponymy is essential, particularly to effectively manage regional logistic operations in case of eruption. Therefore, this study compiles the distinct names assigned to these edifices as a toponymy reference for future research. We recommend using the names most commonly cited in previous studies and, when new names are necessary, submitting them to the Scientific Committee of Antarctic Research Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica to avoid further confusion.

This study investigated the temporal and spatial variability of temperature, salinity, pH and suspended particulate matter (SPM) in surface water from Admiralty Bay, Antarctic Peninsula. The study aimed to understand how water parameters were affected during high meltwater runoff in the summer of 2019/2020, to verify the influence of rapid temperature changes from the spring and summer of 2022/2023 and to identify the sources of SPM. In January 2020, the water temperature and salinity in the region were influenced by rapid shifts in environmental conditions, while pH and SPM remained similar to previous years. The same pattern was observed in the summer of 2022/2023, with only water temperature and salinity varying towards the end of the summer. The SPM concentrations were mainly influenced by wind speed. Spatially, there was no sectorization between different inlets, with specific sites influenced by meltwater and higher SPM values. The study suggests that strong winds are the primary factor influencing SPM resuspension in Admiralty Bay, with atmospheric deposition and meltwater also contributing. This dynamic variability in the water column highlights the need to closely monitor the water’s physicochemical parameters and the influence of atmospheric conditions. This study contributes to our understanding of the SPM sources on the Antarctic coast.

The study of the ground surface temperature (GST) regimes from 2007 to 2021 at different stations on Livingston and Deception islands, South Shetland Islands, in the north-western sector of the Antarctic Peninsula (AP), shows that soils undergo similar cooling in early winter before a shallow snow mantle covers the sites. All monitoring sites along the study period go through seasonal phases of cooling, attenuation, insulation, fusion and zero curtain during winter, although thermal equilibrium is only reached at some stations located at lower elevations on Livingston Island. GST evolution at these stations and the duration of snow periods show oscillations, with turning points in the years 2014 and 2015, when temperatures were at their minimum and snow durations were at their maximum, in agreement with the cooling period occurring in the north-western AP in the early twenty-first century. The thermal regime is mainly controlled by snow cover and its onset and offset dates based only on descriptive patterns, not on statistical testing, more than by altitudinal, topographical, geological or geomorphological factors.

Since 1994, the Andalusian Institute of Geophysics of the University of Granada group has been monitoring the seismic activity of Deception Island volcano (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica) during summer surveys. In this review, we analyse long-period and volcanic-tectonic events, including tremor episodes, recorded from 2011–2012 to 2021–2022 surveys with a local network and a seismic array. The seismo-volcanic activity on Deception Island occurs very locally, mainly as a result of tectonic destabilization induced by volcanic activity along with regional stresses, as a consequence of rifting and subduction processes spanning the South Shetland Islands, Bransfield Strait and Antarctica Peninsula. During this period, two changes to the volcanic alert level due to different volcanic parameters can be highlighted. The first of them was caused by the 2014–2015 seismic swarm as a consequence of a great regional perturbation located to the north-east of Deception Island, which spread around to the entire volcano. The second one, in the 2019–2020 survey, was established as a result of a significant increase in deformation parameters as a prelude of the August 2020 massive earthquake swarm that occurred in the Bransfield Strait, near the Orca submarine volcano. Furthermore, in the previous 2018–2019 survey, a peak of seismic activity was also recorded.
