Information on sea ice type is an important factor for deriving sea ice parameters from satellite remote sensing data, such as sea ice concentration, extent and thickness. In this study, sea ice in the Weddell Sea was classified by the histogram threshold (HT) method, the Spreen model (SM) method from satellite scatterometer data and the strong contrast (SC) method from radiometer data, and this information was compared with Antarctic Sea Ice Processes and Climate (ASPeCt) sea ice-type ship-based observations. The results show that all three methods can distinguish the multi-year (MY) ice and first-year (FY) ice using Ku-band scatterometer data and radiometer data during the ice growth season, while C-band scatterometer data are not suitable for MY ice and FY ice discrimination using HT and SM methods. The SM model has a smaller MY ice classification extent than the HT method from scatterometer data. The classification accuracy of the SM method is the higher compared to ship-based observations. It can be concluded that the SM method is a promising method for discriminating MY ice from FY ice. These results provide a reference for further retrieval of long-term sea ice-type information for the whole of Antarctica.

Subglacial melt has important implications for ice-sheet dynamics. Locating and identifying subglacial lakes are expensive and time-consuming, requiring radar surveys or satellite methods. We explore three methods to identify source regions for lakes using seven continent-wide environmental characteristics that are sensitive to or influenced by ice-sheet temperature. A simple comparison of environmental properties at lake locations with their continent-wide distributions suggests a statistical relationship (high Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic) between stable lake locations and ice thickness and surface temperatures, indicating melting under passive conditions. Active lakes, in contrast, show little correlation with direct thermally influenced parameters, instead exhibiting large statistical differences with horizontal velocity and bedrock elevation. More sophisticated techniques, including principal component analysis (PCA) and machine learning (ML) classification, provide better spatial identification of lake types. Positive PCA scores derived from the environmental characteristics correlate with stable lakes, whereas negative values correspond to active lakes. ML methods can also identify regions where subglacial lake melt sources are probable. While ML provides the most accurate classification maps, the combination of approaches adds deeper knowledge of the primary controls on lake formation and the environmental settings in which they are likely to be found.

Foraging strategies in gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) have been well studied (e.g. Croxall et al. 1988, Robinson & Hindell 1996, Lescroël et al. 2004, Takahashi et al. 2008, Xavier et al. 2017). The general consensus is this largest member of the three pygoscelid penguins displays both nearshore benthic and pelagic foraging tactics to consume combinations of crustaceans and fish. In a recent study, Carpenter-Kling et al. (2017) reported that gentoos at sub-Antarctic Marion Island displayed a novel foraging strategy that consisted of alternating typical lengthy foraging trips with much shorter nearshore afternoon trips. They suggest the latter foraging behaviour may be a response to suboptimal feeding conditions caused by local environmental change. This novel discovery reinforces the fact that, despite considerable study, not all foraging tactics in penguins have been documented. In this paper, we describe what we believe to be, yet another undocumented foraging tactic employed by gentoos.

Fungi are probably the most diverse group of eukaryotic organisms in the Antarctic continent and nearby archipelagos, and they dominate communities in either mild or harsh habitats. However, our knowledge of their global distribution ranges and the temporal origins of their Antarctic populations is rather limited or almost absent, especially for species that do not lichenize. We focused for the first time on elucidating the taxonomic identity and phylogenetic relationships of several Antarctic collections of the deadly fungal Basidiomycota genus Galerina. By using molecular sequence data from the universal fungal barcode and a dataset encompassing 178 specimens, the inferred phylogeny showed that the Antarctic specimens corresponded with the sub-cosmopolitan species Galerina marginata, Galerina badipes and Galerina fallax, and their most closely related intraspecific genetic lineages were from northern Europe and North America. We found that these species probably host Antarctic-endemic intraspecific lineages. Furthermore, our dating analyses indicated that their Antarctic populations originated in the Pleistocene, a temporal frame that agrees with that proposed for the Antarctic colonization of plants such as the grass Deschampsia antarctica, mosses and some amphitropical lichens. Altogether, these findings converge on the same temporal scenario for the assembly of the most conspicuous terrestrial Antarctic plant and fungal communities.

Sub-Antarctic Marion Island's glacial history has acted as a control on abiotic terrestrial processes and the colonization and distribution of biotic species found on the island today. Recent chronological studies have shown an early deglaciation of the island and identified new geomorphological features associated with past ice dynamics. These permit a reassessment of ice extent during and after the island's last local glacial maximum. In this paper, we provide a revised reconstruction of the island's palaeo-ice extent by using a geomorphology-based approach to delineate palaeo-ice margins and demarcate possible glacial basins. The model presented here provides the needed spatial context for future studies on the variations in the distribution of species (e.g. microorganisms and plant species) and abiotic processes and forms (e.g. soil development and periglacial landforms). In addition, it highlights areas that require improved geophysical assessment in order to produce a more complete island-scale reconstruction of former ice extents (e.g. the west coast).

“Antarctica shall be used for peaceful purposes only …… Freedom of scientific investigation and co-operation toward that end …… shall continue, subject to the provisions of the present Treaty.”

These are the fundamental objectives of the Antarctic Treaty as expressed in Articles I and II. Whatfollows in the Treaty, and in most of the many “Recommendations” to the Governments of AntarcticTreaty Consultative Parties (ATCPs), is aimed at securing these objectives by the creation of aframework of law. Unusually for a system of laws, most of this legal framework is hortatory ratherthan mandatory in character - it cajoles rather than orders. Perhaps not surprisingly this has given riseto damaging suggestions about its ability to provide adequate protection for the Antarctic environment.The response of the ATCPs to this criticism has been to embark on a review of existing Antarctic law,to make it more consistent, reduce overlaps and more especially, make much of it mandatory. Thisprocess began at the XIth Special Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting in Chile last November.Since it aims to provide greater clarity, accessibility and certainty in the law, it must be welcomed.But within these admirable objectives a prospect of loggerheads begins to loom.

Looking backwards should always be instructive. The lessons that history can teach us are, of course, fundamental to progress in science but what about its management?

The theory of propagation in a direction almost parallel to the Earth’s magnetic field is reviewed, calculating the group refractive index of the ordinary ray in the presence of electron-neutral collisions. An electron density profile is estimated from the ordinary trace and is used to compute the z-ray trace. It is shown that this reconstruction can help to identify the rare cases of z-rays from among the numerous cases of duplicate ordinary traces, due to reflection from two different directions.

Several studies have been carried out during the last fifteen years on reproduction, population dynamics and diet of the Antarctic shag, Phalacrocorax bransfieldensis Murphy, at different localities in the South Shetland Islands (reviewed in Casaux & Barrera-Oro 2006). In both the colonies studied and in other colonies counted we observed that the number of breeding pairs was steadily decreasing (Casaux & Barrera-Oro 2006). Casaux & Baroni (2002) had earlier suggested that such a decreasing trend might be related, at least partially, to a marked decrease in the inshore populations of two fish prey species, the marbled notothen Notothenia rossii Richardson and the humphead notothen Gobionotothen gibberifrons Lönnberg (Barrera-Oro et al. 2000), which had been studied over a period of 19 years in coastal waters of the South Shetland Islands. Exactly how a reduction in prey availability affects the shag populations (e.g. migration of breeders to other colonies in the area or to new breeding areas, a decrease in the rate of recruitment, an increase in adult mortality, variation in the age at first breeding, etc) is not clear. To investigate this, we started a banding programme at Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands. We postulated that the processes might operate with different intensities on individuals of different sexes, so all individuals in each population studied needed to be sexed. This posed problems for chicks which have monomorphic plumage and no differences in vocalisations (Casaux & Baroni 2000), so that the normal methods for sexing in the field would not work. As most of the external morphological characters in the chicks of Antarctic shags have stabilized by 45–50 days old (Casaux 1998), Casaux & Baroni (2000) had suggested that the use of discriminant functions originally developed for adults could be an appropriate method to sex chicks more than 50 days old.

The occurrence of species in both polar regions (bipolarity) is a common phenomenon in the Antarctic flora. Considering the high morphological variation in polar regions due to extreme conditions, the use of molecular tools is indispensable for testing whether Arctic and Antarctic populations indeed belong to the same species. However, few phylogeographic studies of bipolar bryophytes have been conducted so far, especially when comparing molecular and morphological variation. Here, we assess the bipolarity and intraspecific variation of Roaldia revoluta, a strictly bipolar species of pleurocarpous mosses. Phylogenetic analyses based on ITS sequences clearly resolve R. revoluta as monophyletic and confirm its bipolar distribution pattern. Low intraspecific molecular variation in the markers ITS/26S and rpl16 was observed, and most specimens from both polar regions belong to a single haplotype, making it difficult to infer the origin and dispersal routes between both polar regions of R. revoluta. Morphometric analysis furthermore suggests that there are no significant morphological differences among populations from both polar regions and that morphological variation is mainly influenced by local environmental conditions. Our data do not unequivocally support the recent separation of the former intraspecific taxon Hypnum revolutum var. dolomiticum at the species level as Roaldia dolomitica.
