Fatigue in aircraft structures is a problem for which quantitative and generally accepted solutions are not available as yet. Even in recent years significant fatigue failures in aircraft structures have occurred. Some of these failures can be attributed to either poor design or underestimating of the fatigue environment. Unfortunately such statements are of little help since there are a confusingly large number of aspects involved. For a designer considering fatigue problems, experience, qualitative understanding and a good intuition are therefore essential.

Vortex Structures in Turbulent Boundary Layers

The structure of turbulent boundary layers has recently been studied in detail. Using the hydrogen, bubble technique, Kline et al have detected intermittent formation of low-speed streaks very close to the surface, which lift away, thereby forming local inflexions in the velocity profile. These amplify disturbances, producing eddies which are ejected into the outer part of the layer. Black has proposed a turbulence model consisting of periodic horseshoe vortices within the layer, in which the longitudinal legs are stretched as they move through the comparatively quiescent layer.

During the past decade we have seen many notable achievements in aviation by Russian scientists, engineers and technicians. The first man in space, the first supersonic air liner, and the rapid growth of Aeroflot are but three of their more prominent successes.
In a rather less spectacular manner, the Russians have developed a very powerful helicopter industry and it is probably correct to say that no other country in the world has utilised the helicopter so extensively on such a wide variety of uses as have the Russians.
In this lecture, I will endeavour to briefly trace out the historical development of the helicopter in Russia and to review some of the current types in service.
