A review is given of current methods in theoretical aerodynamics which are useful in the design of aircraft wings for subsonic and transonic speeds. These are of two basic types:

• (A) direct methods for calculating the flow over a givenwing shape. In the design process, these can be used to obtain a rapid estimate of the effect of a specified change in wing shape. The most practical methods of this type make use of the viscous/inviscid interaction technique; some recent methods are described and examples are given of their use, both in two and three dimensions, including comparisons with experiment.

• (B) inverse methods in which the shape is calculated explicitly, as a result of either (a) specifying the surface pressure distribution on the wing, or (b) requiring that some suitable ‘target’ function, usually the drag/lift ratio, shall be a minimum. At present, these methods are restricted to inviscid flow.

Several examples of both ‘pressure’ and ‘optimisation’ methods are discussed, and their advantages and limitations considered.

The analysis of Freeman is extended to the hypersonic flow of an inviscid, vibrationally relaxing gas past a bluff body. Expressions for the shock shape, streamline shapes and stand-off distance are derived; these expressions have been evaluated for a sphere for various values of an appropriate non-equilibrium parameter Λ.

A semi-empirical analysis of unstable crack propagation in thin sheets is given. An effective value of the crack tip strain concentration factor is used as the criterion for instability. Good correlation is achieved with experimental results from unreinforced sheets of aluminium and titanium alloys and high-strength steels. The interdependence of geometry and stressstrain curve properties in determining the unstable crack propagation characteristics of sheet materials is illustrated in an appendix.

The Ninth Lanchester Memorial Lecture was given by Professor W. A. Mair, MA, FRAeS, on “STOL—Some Possibilities and Limitations” in the Society's Lecture Theatre on 12th May 1966. The Chair was taken by the President, Mr. A. D. Baxter, MEng, CEng, FRAeS. Before the lecture he presented the Society's Gold Medal for 1965 to Professor M. J. Lighthill, DSc, FRS, FRAeS, for “his outstanding original work in many fields of Aeronautics”, explaining that Professor Lighthill had been unable to be present at the Wilbur and Orville Wright Memorial Lecture in December 1965 when the Society's main awards for the year were presented.

The President then said that this was the first meeting of the Society since his installation as President and it was a very pleasant way to start his year in office with first, the presentation of the Gold Medal to one distinguished scientist and second, the introduction of another as the Lanchester Memorial Lecturer.

There would be many members of the Society who would remember Dr. Lanchester, his attendance at lectures and his contributions to the discussions. It was true, however, that the real stature of such men was rarely recognised at close quarters and often only in the light of later developments was the importance of their work realised. It was 20 years since Dr. Lanchester's death and their Memorial Lecture was in its ninth year. Each year, each President had added a tribute to this great man. He was a man of many parts—a scientist, musician, poet and engineer and aeronautics owed much to him. It was fitting that the Lecture had established a tradition of surveying some field of research associated with aerodynamics, in which Lanchester was so eminent. He thought that Lanchester would approve of both the subjects discussed and the distinguished men who had honoured his memory by presenting them. Before introducing Professor Mair he wished to welcome Mrs. Lanchester and Mr. George Lanchester and his wife, and Mrs. Mair.

Professor Mair must be well known to most of them. After graduating in Mechanical Sciences at Cambridge in 1939 he had joined the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough, where he scent some six years in the Aerodynamics Department doing research on high subsonic speed, both in the wind tunnels and in full-scale flight. In 1946 he had gone to the University of Manchester as Director of the Fluid Motion Laboratory and since 1952 he had held the Francis Mond Chair of Aeronautical Engineering at Cambridge. His chief interest there had been mainly in low speed aerodynamics and his authority in that field was widely recognised. In 1963 he had been appointed Chairman of the Powered Lift Committee of the Aeronautical Research Council.

Luminescent paints allow non-intrusive measurement of pressure and temperature at high spatial resolution without prior knowledge of the flow-field. Experiments have demonstrated that a ‘standard’ luminescent paint technique, developed by BAE Systems, can simultaneously measure steady pressure and temperature. This is achieved through knowledge of the paint phosphorescence lifetime rather than the absolute intensity, which increases the measurement accuracy. In addition, a new ‘fast’ paint has been calibrated at the University of Bath for the measurement of unsteady pressure using a variable frequency pulsing air jet. Pressure measurements were made with both paints in the wake of various excrescences, sized to produce vortex shedding in the frequency range 500–4,200Hz, in a transonic tunnel. The extent of the wakes was determined from a flow visualisation technique. Time-averaged measurements, using both luminescent paints, and transient measurements of the unsteady pressure field, made with the fast paint, were compared with transducer data. For all cases the luminescent paint data compared well with the conventional measurements and the Strouhal number agreed well with data from the literature. The use of luminescent paint for the simultaneous measurement of pressure and temperature over a NACA 0012 aerofoil, as well as the quantification of convective heat transfer is examined in Part 2.

It is a pleasure and indeed an honour to be invited to contribute this paper to the 70th Birthday Tribute to Professor A. D. Young, in recognition of his longstanding friendship and as a colleague of the author for many years.

It was Professor A. D. Young, at the College of Aeronautics in 1949, who gave the necessary guidance and encouragement to the author in starting research into aerodynamics noise, which was possibly one of the first attempts made in making a quantitative assessment of the noise from a turbulent air jet.

The paper discusses the early experimental work and its conclusions, and how it led to attempts to reduce jet noise through the use of vortex generators and the corrugated nozzle. The comparison between theory and experiment is commented on with reference to the early work on acoustic sources and the questions this comparison raised. A final section is included which attempts to close the gap in our understanding of jet noise generation.

The assessment of damage due to impacts in composite sandwich panels and the component life reductions associated with such damage is becoming increasingly important within the aerospace industry. This study analyses minimum gauge, non-metallic honeycomb wing panels subject to impact damage. In all instances the damage is caused by ‘soft body’ impactors travelling at elevated velocities to simulate bird strike and other soft debris. The damage formed during these impacts is shown to be large in plan area but shallow and primarily causes crushing of the core in a thin layer. Loading of the panels after impact has been performed to determine the reduction in load carrying capacity and associated failure mechanisms. Damage due to soft body impact is shown to be very different to the classical rigid body impact upon which current repair schemes are based. As a result in many applications the use of current repair schemes may be inappropriate. The viability of new repair techniques is discussed with particular attention to the prevention of failure mechanisms due to loading after impact.

The object of this paper is to present an analytical method of investigating the flexure of a non-uniform beam under transverse loading. A method due to Strandhagen for a uniform beam is extended to the case of a non-uniform beam, the deflection appearing in the form of a Fourier series, the coefficients of which are functions of the loading, the end-conditions, and parameters which define the non-uniform flexural rigidity of the beam.

A procedure was discussed in Ref. 1 for dealing with structural discontinuities by making the strain energy of the structure a minimum, subject to the conditions that the members to be cut out are entirely free from load, and the proof was based on the well-known method of Lagrangian Multipliers. Here is another proof.

A simple system is considered in which a two-dimensional aerofoil in an air stream performs a coupled oscillation in pitching and vertical translation. An expression for the energy transferred from stream to aerofoil is derived as a function of the frequency parameter, amplitude ratio and phase difference, and the conditions under which positive energy can be extracted from the stream are investigated. The connection between the case of zero energy transfer, and the critical flutter state is noted.

Attention is confined to the incompressible case and diagrams show the results obtained when the air loads are obtained from (i) vortex sheet theory and (ii) the classical set of constant derivatives.

Vortex sheet theory leads to the conclusion that, provided that the amplitude ratio and phase difference satisfy certain conditions, energy can be extracted from the stream for all values of the frequency parameter. On the other hand, the use of a set of constant derivatives places an upper limit on the values of the frequency parameter for the extraction of energy.

It is unnecessary to enlarge on the importance of the fuels used in aviation in a paper before this Society. Not only is fuel quality the most important individual factor to be considered in the economics of civil aviation, but engine development, aircraft design and performance depend upon it.

An apology is offered, in view of the title of the paper, that as it is barely possible in the confines of a single paper to deal adequately with the volatile fuels (known as petrols and gasolines) used in the normal carburettor or homogeneous charge engines, other types of fuels have necessarily been omitted.

Control activity is a recognised gauge of pilot workload and recent research has employed wavelet decomposition to classify discrete control actions into categories such as guidance and stabilisation. The aim of the present work is to extend the wavelet approach so that workload may be quantified through sets of rules based on appropriate control activity metrics. The rules are derived from data collected in piloted simulation trials of a variety of flying tasks involving a number of pilots and different helicopter configurations. Statistical tests are then applied which test the efficacy of the derived rules. The immediate aim of the research is to establish whether workload can be successfully predicted from control responses. The underlying goal however, is to be able to predict workload ratings from desktop simulations in order to provide indicative workload information at the design stage. The contribution of the current study to this objective is discussed.

It is shown that by combining the dependence of boundary layer heating on local flow conditions with the lifting characteristics of hypersonic wings a simple relationship between wing loading and surface temperature can be derived. This replaces the common concept of an altitude/Mach number flight corridor through which hypersonic flight appears possible without exceeding an acceptable surface temperature, and indicates that flight beyond Mach 6 will in fact require considerable material or cooling developments.

The principle of wall similarity expressed by a universal logarithmic inner law relationship is well established for turbulent flow in circular pipes. The validity of Preston's original hypothesis for the measurement of turbulent skin friction depends upon the existence of wall similarity. Although Preston's hypothesis appears to be correct in general it has been found that his calibration for the wall pitot tube was incorrect. Extensive observations by Head and Rechenberg showed some discrepancy. Later work by Patel on the measurement of skin friction in three circular pipes covering a much larger experimental range has led to a modified calibration.

The aim of this work is to investigate and quantify the latency on a Stewart Platform caused exclusively by a Classic washout filter. This washout filter is intended to recreate the sensations of motion caused by changes of translational and rotational acceleration that an aircraft can provide, due to changes in attitudes caused by external factors, and those caused by the pilot’s command. The input signal was generated by a FlightGear Simulator in order to obtain the specific forces and angular velocities of a Boeing 747 during a take-off procedure. These signals are then filtered by a washout filter and sent to the inverse kinematics of the movable platform, which will transform the aircraft motion sensations in platforms actuator position, thereby causing a certain signal delay. Experiments were performed in a Stewart Platform to obtain the latency caused by the mathematical modelling of the entire washout filter system. This latency are then compared to the latency caused by the control and dynamics of the platform’s actuators. Results indicate that the washout filter is the most responsible for the latency of the specific force signals to be reproduced by the platform in this experiment, and that the natural frequency and damping coefficient values must be properly estimated in order to optimise the total latency.

In France, the very first ideas on flow control were developed by Philippe Poisson-Quinton from the Office National d'Etudes et Recherches Aérospatiales (ONERA) in the 1950s. There was some renewal of this research topic in the early 1990s, first in the United States with scientists like Wygnanski and Gad-El Hak, and also in France at the initiative of Pierre Perrier from Dassault Aviation, who triggered a lot of research activities in this field both at ONERA and in the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) laboratories. The motivation was driven by the applications on Dassault Aviation military aircraft and Falcon business jets in order to contribute to the design, while facilitating performance optimisation and multi-disciplinary compromise. A few examples of flow control technologies, such as forebody vortex control, circulation control, flow separation control or boundary layer transition control using hybrid laminar flow control (HLFC), are presented to illustrate the applications and to explain the methodology used for the design of the flow control devices. The author also emphasises the current reaction of industry with respect to the integration of flow control technologies on an aircraft programme. The conclusion is related to the present status of the French research on this topic and to the next challenges to be addressed.

A method is proposed by which a direct numerical simulation of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations may be embedded within a more general aeronautical CFD code. The method may be applied to any code which solves the Euler equations or the Favre-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. A formal decomposition of the flowfield is used to derive modified equations for use with direct numerical simulation solvers. Some preliminary applications for model flows with transitional separation bubbles are given.

Hutapea et al showed that an actuation system based on shape memory alloy coils could be employed for a wing flap of an aircraft. A continued research and development of these previously demonstrated smart flight control mechanisms was performed with the goal to develop a proof-of-concept shape memory alloy (SMA) actuation system, which utilises SMA springs to control the six degrees of freedom of an aircraft. For this actuation system, the springs are heated via an electric current, causing the spring to contract as the metal’s phase changes from martensite to austenite. The contraction allows the springs to function as linear actuators for the aircraft’s control surfaces, specifically the flaps and ailerons on the wings and horizontal stabilisers and a rudder on the tail. As a significant advancement to the overall actuation system, an air burst-cooling system increases the cooling rate of the coils by means of forced convection. Computer-based finite element model analysis and experimental testing were used to define and optimise SMA spring specifications for each individual control surface design. A onesixth scale proof-of-concept model of a Piper PA-28 Cherokee 160 aircraft was constructed to demonstrate and to verify the final actuation system design.

An investigation of the effect of a root gap is extended to the oscillatory pitching motion of a slender wing. Potential theory is used and the unsteady forces are shown to be reduced by the gap as drastically as the steady. These results cast doubt on measurements made by the technique of half-model testing. Viscous flow in the gap is discussed with reference to the possible types of model mount. The effect of viscosity may be to reduce the gap loss, but the extent of the improvement is uncertain.
