We consider the repairman problem which corresponds to the finite population M/M/1 queue. Asymptotic approximations for the transient probability distribution of the number of broken machines constructed when the number M of machines is large and the service (repair) rate is also large, specifically, O(M). The approximations are constructed by using singular perturbation techniques such as the ray method, boundary layer theory, and the method of matched asymptotic expansions. Extensive numerical comparisons show the quality of our approximations.

A theorem that gives the optimal control of Gaussian processes using the mathematical expectation of a function of the time and the place where the uncontrolled processes hit the boundary of the stopping region for the first time is proved. The result obtained in this note is an extension of a theorem due to Whittle.

We extend a result due to Zazanis (1992) on the analyticity of the expectation of suitable functionals of homogeneous Poisson processes with respect to the intensity of the process. As our main result, we provide Monte Carlo estimators for the derivatives. We apply our results to stochastic models which are of interest in stochastic geometry and insurance.

We consider a multitype branching random walk with independent Poisson random fields of each type of particle initially. The existence of limiting random fields as the generation number, is studied, when the intensity of the initial field is renormalized in such a way that the mean measures converge. Spatial laws of large numbers and central limit theorems are given for the limiting random field, when it is non-trivial.

We generalize a two-type mutation process in which particles reproduce by binary fission, inheriting the parental type, but which can mutate with small probability during their lifetimes to the opposite type. The generalization allows an arbitrary offspring distribution. The branching process structure of this scheme is exploited to obtain a variety of limit theorems, some of which extend known results for the binary case. In particular, practically usable asymptotic normality results are obtained when the initial population size is large.

We present a simple proof of Zolotarev’s representation for the Laplace transform of the normalized limit of a Markov branching process and relate it to the Harris representation.

Existence and finiteness of the sample-mean limit of sojourn times of jobs in a queueing system are investigated. The queueing system operates under rather general multiprocessor disciplines allowing job classes and priorities. The input stream of jobs consisting of job classes and interarrival and processing times is stationary and ergodic and may contain batch arrivals. Existence of the sample-mean limit is proved by means of the superadditive ergodic theorem, and its finiteness is controlled by uniform mixing of the input stream.

In this paper we prove that the limiting distribution of the general bulk queue exists and is independent of the initial conditions if and only if the traffic intensity is less than one. We further generalize the following heavy traffic results of the GI/G/1 model to the general bulk queue model. When ρ > 1 or ρ = 1 the waiting time is distributed approximately as a Gaussian variable and the absolute value of a Gaussian variable, respectively. The exponential approximation is derived from the Wiener–Hopf matrix equations established in a previous paper while the unstable case ρ ≧ 1 is treated by means of functional central limit theorems for mixing processes.

Consider the Boolean model in ℝ2, where the germs form a homogeneous Poisson point process with intensity λ and the grains are convex compact random sets. It is known (see, e.g., Cressie (1993, Section 9.5.3)) that Laslett's rule transforms the exposed tangent points of the Boolean model into a homogeneous Poisson process with the same intensity. In the present paper, we give a simple proof of this result, which is based on a martingale argument. We also consider the cumulative process of uncovered area in a vertical strip and show that a (linear) Poisson process with intensity λ can be embedded in it.

In this paper, we present the distribution of the coalescence time of two DNA sequences (or genes) subject to symmetric migration between two islands, and conditional on the observed number of segregating sites in the sequences. The distribution for the segregating-site pattern is also obtained. Some surprising results emerge when both genes are initially on the same island. First, the post-data mean coalescence time is shown to be dependent on the migration parameter, as opposed to the pre-data mean. Second, both the post-data density and expectation for the coalescence time are shown to converge, in the weak-migration limit, to the corresponding panmictic results, as opposed to the pre-data situation where there is convergence in the density but not in the expectation. Finally, it is shown that there is convergence in the weak-migration limit in the distribution of the number of segregating sites but not in the expectation and variance. Numerical and graphical results for samples of size greater than two are also presented.

Given a spectrally negative Lévy process, we predict, in an $L_1$ sense, the last passage time of the process below zero before an independent exponential time. This optimal prediction problem generalises [2], where the infinite-horizon problem is solved. Using a similar argument as that in [24], we show that this optimal prediction problem is equivalent to solving an optimal prediction problem in a finite-horizon setting. Surprisingly (unlike the infinite-horizon problem), an optimal stopping time is based on a curve that is killed at the moment the mean of the exponential time is reached. That is, an optimal stopping time is the first time the process crosses above a non-negative, continuous, and non-increasing curve depending on time. This curve and the value function are characterised as a solution of a system of nonlinear integral equations which can be understood as a generalisation of the free boundary equations (see e.g. [21, Chapter IV.14.1]) in the presence of jumps. As an example, we numerically calculate this curve in the Brownian motion case and for a compound Poisson process with exponential-sized jumps perturbed by a Brownian motion.

When a stochastic process (a random measure, set, field, etc. on a group) is stationary, ergodic, or reversible, then certain functions of this process inherit these properties. We present sufficient conditions for this inheritance.

Consider a processor-sharing queue placed in a quasi-reversible network in equilibrium. This note explains why the expected sojourn time of a customer in such a queue is proportional to his service time.
