Thomas Kerchever Arnold's Practical Introduction to Latin Prose Composition first appeared in 1839 and was reprinted in several editions due to popular demand, being adopted as a textbook in leading public schools. Ordained as a priest in 1827 after graduating from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1821, Arnold had studied both theology and classics, and wrote prolifically on both subjects. His first school textbook was published in 1836 and others followed steadily until his death in 1853. One of the chief merits of Arnold's classical publications was his use of contemporary works of German scholarship, to which he readily acknowledged his debt. He produced, alongside Latin and Greek textbooks, grammars of English, French, German, Italian, and Hebrew, and editions of many Greek and Latin authors. This introduction was designed to provide students with the basic tools with which to construct sentences and includes exercises on syntax and a vocabulary index.
William W. Goodwin (1831–1912) was Eliot Professor of Greek at Harvard from 1860 to 1901, and was the first director of the American School in Athens. This, his most important book, was written for nineteenth-century American students to make available to them the latest European developments in the understanding of Greek syntax, as well as his own original material. It went through several editions between 1860 and 1890, and remains an invaluable resource for scholars of the Greek language. This is a reissue of the 1867 edition, published in Cambridge Massachusetts by Sever and Francis. It presents a detailed and well organized discussion of moods, tenses, infinitive, participles and verbal adjectives. Goodwin includes a large collection of examples taken from a wide range of major Greek writers to illustrate every variety of each construction. An index of these examples is also provided for easy reference.
The lectures gathered in this 1886 publication were delivered by August Boeckh in the years 1809–1865. The German classicist introduces his understanding of philology as a discipline that is not solely the study of language but also a subject incorporating historical and philosophical elements. The work is divided into two parts: the first provides the formal theory behind Boeckh's philological inquiries into the areas of hermeneutics and critique. The second and more substantial part of the book is a wide-ranging study of the history of Antiquity as well as an account of the methodology that Boeckh employs. He examines Greek and Roman public and private life, and considers different aspects of religion. Boeckh also gives an overview of different expressions of art such as architecture and painting, music and drama; and lastly he engages with the history of language and explains what lies behind etymology and syntax.
W. M. Lindsay, an outstanding figure of his time and one of the greatest of British Latinists, recognised a need for a 'new treatment' of Latin philology in this enduring work of 1894. Demonstrating his considerable familiarity with the voluminous texts of earlier Latin grammarians, Lindsay draws upon previous significant studies to illustrate how our knowledge of the Latin language has advanced over time. The book addresses all the key aspects of the Latin language in turn, including its alphabet, pronunciation, accentuation, the formation of noun and adjective stems, declensions, conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions. It is clearly organised to enable the reader easily to locate the topic required. Held in extremely high regard by classical scholars today, Lindsay's work condenses a vast store of learning on this large and complex topic into a single volume, and represents a major contribution to the analysis of Latin grammar.
Henry Nettleship (1839–1893), Professor of Latin at Oxford, published his work on Latin lexicography in 1889. The volume had originally been planned as a complete Latin lexicon; however, after almost twelve years (during which Lewis and Short's Latin Dictionary was published in 1879) of labour on the letter A, the size of the endeavour became apparent and the shape of the work was revised, becoming a detailed lexicon of the letter A, which amounted to two-thirds of the work, with shorter lexicographical notes on the other letters up to U. For the words he covered, many of Nettleship's entries are more detailed and specialised than Lewis and Short's, and there is a far greater emphasis placed on early Roman literature and Latin glossaries in the notes on etymology and usage. The critical thoroughness of the work has ensured its continued use by Latin scholars and lexicographers.

Charles Wordsworth's Graecae Grammaticae Rudimenta in Usum Scholarum was, for decades, the foundational Greek grammar in England. Wordsworth, a nephew of the poet, a master at Winchester College and later bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld, and Dublane, used his expertise in teaching the classical languages to produce a clear, practical introduction to Greek, beginning with the alphabet and progressing through the declension of nouns and adjectives, the conjugations of verbs, and the fundamentals of syntax. In striving not to replace the standard Eton Grammar but rather to refine and revise it, Wordsworth succeeded in composing a book that one fellow master called 'most distinct, easy of conception for the boys, and lucidly arranged'. This ninth edition (1853) includes the author's full emendations to the text.

Who invented the Greek alphabet and why? The purpose of this challenging book is to inquire systematically into the historical causes that underlay the radical shift from earlier and less efficient writing systems to the use of alphabetic writing. The author reaches the conclusion that a single man, perhaps from the island of Euboea, invented the Greek alphabet specifically in order to record the Iliad and the Odyssey of Homer.
Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker (1784–1868) was one of the most engaging and creative of German philologists during the formative period of modern classical scholarship; 'one of the heroes', Wilamowitz called him. Art, poetry and religion were to him all the same object of study, and a key to the world of Greek imagination and feeling. His attempt to grasp the meaning of all Greek mythology gave impetus to a still vigorous tradition. This work (in two volumes, first published 1835 and 1849) is his effort to recover the lost epics of the archaic period, and the conditions of their performance and transmission. If his adventurous reconstructions, here and in his companion work on Greek tragedy, do not always command assent, they offer many brilliant observations and insights. His influence has been as diffuse as it is unacknowledged; again and again one finds on reading him that Welcker said it first.
What is colloquial Latin? What can we learn about it from Roman literature, and how does an understanding of colloquial Latin enhance our appreciation of literature? Henry John Roby (1830–1915) was a Cambridge-educated classicist whose influential career included periods as a schoolmaster, professor of Roman law, businessman, educational reformer and Member of Parliament. His two-volume Grammar of the Latin Language reveals his innovative, descriptive approach to grammar, which situates thorough analysis of the Latin language within the historical context of the writings themselves, or, as Roby puts it, setting 'example above precept' in order to put grammar 'in the proper light, as an account of what men do say, not a theory of what they should say'. Drawing examples from the corpus of classical writings dating from circa 200 BCE. to 120 CE; this second volume (1875) is devoted to syntax, including a complete analysis of cases, tense, and mood. A work of remarkable breadth and depth, Roby's book remains an essential resource for both historical linguistics and the study of Latin grammar.
Moritz Wilhelm Constantin Schmidt (1823–1888) published this work in 1854. It is a collection of the fragmentary Greek texts of Didymus Chalcenterus (63 BCE–10 CE), a grammarian and compiler who lived and taught in Alexandria and Rome. Didymus was perhaps the most prolific writer of antiquity: it is suggested by other ancient sources that he wrote between 3,500 and 4,000 books. Because he borrowed heavily from other authors, he is an important source for the lost work of writers such as Aristophanes and Aristarchus. Most of Didymus' own work has perished, but what remains is collected here by Schmidt. The fragments cover topics including lexicography; grammar and orthography; the style and language of authors such as Homer, Pindar, and Demosthenes; and ancient historical writing. The final group of fragments includes a number of texts of which the attribution to Didymus is uncertain.
