Summary

The Globe constructed on the Bankside in 1599 was not, strictly speaking, a new theatre. In fact, it was built, timber for timber, out of the remains of the old Theatre, which was erected in Shoreditch by theatre impresario James Burbage in 1576. The Theatre was used by many of the leading companies of the 1580s, including the one that would go on to be reassembled as the Lord Chamberlain’s Men.
