Sepsis caused by infection is an amalgamation of biochemical, physiological and pathological abnormalities. In February 2016, the SEPSIS-3 group defined sepsis as organ dysfunction caused by dysregulated host response to infection. This is based on the quick sequential organ failure assessment score (quick SOFA score). It includes three criteria in which each is given a score of 1. See Table 38.1.
