Also called psychogenic seizures, nonepileptic seizures or pseudoseizures, functional seizures, psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) are characterized by episodes of seizure-like activity without true epileptiform activity detected on EEG. The pathophysiology of these episodes is poorly understood, though an active area of research. There is a higher prevalence of PNES in women as well as in those with a history of psychological, physical, or sexual trauma or abuse.
