Named after eccentric and controversial French physician Charles-Edouard Brown-Sequard, who first described the syndrome in 1849, Brown-Sequard syndrome (BSS) is a form of incomplete spinal cord injury. Though most often caused by acute trauma in the form of stabbing, gunshot, or severe displacing trauma to the spinal column ultimately resulting in hemi-section of the spinal cord, BSS can also be caused by more chronic progressive conditions such as spinal spondylosis, multiple sclerosis, neoplasm, radiation, or severe vertebral disc herniation. Brown-Sequard syndrome accounts for a low minority of all spinal cord injuries and has no gender predominance.
