In its August and September 1822 issues, the Imperial Magazine devoted a long, scathing memoir to Byron’s life and works under the column titled “Memoirs of the Living Poets of Great Britain.” The anonymous “W” concluded by drawing a telling comparison between the poet and Voltaire:
