The Plio-Pleistocene site of Kromdraai (Gauteng province, South Africa) is a dolomitic cave situated approximately 2 km east of Sterkfontein, on the southern side of the Bloubank stream. It has long been considered as two distinct localities of relatively limited spatial extent. One locality yielded the type specimen of Paranthropus robustus (TM 1517; the only partial skeleton of this species known thus far; Broom 1938a, 1938b, 1941, 1942, 1943) and is referred to as “Kromdraai B” (KB), or the “hominin site.” The younger “Kromdraai A” (KA) site is situated about 30 m to the west of KB. KA has not yet yielded hominin fossils and is therefore called the “faunal site.” KB yielded an Oldowan stone tool (a polyhedral core). Stone artifacts associated with the early Acheulean or Oldowan were found at KA (Kuman et al., 1997) and therefore also indicate a hominin presence. It is now recognized that KA and KB are part of the same cave complex (Braga and Thackeray, 2016).
