A spread-out lattice animal is a finite connected set of edges in \{\{x,y\}\subset \mathbb{Z}^d\;:\;0\lt \|x-y\|\le L\}$\{\{x,y\}\subset \mathbb{Z}^d\;:\;0\lt \|x-y\|\le L\}$. A lattice tree is a lattice animal with no loops. The best estimate on the critical point p_{\textrm{c}}$p_{\textrm{c}}$ so far was achieved by Penrose (J. Stat. Phys. 77, 3–15, 1994) : p_{\textrm{c}}=1/e+O(L^{-2d/7}\log L)$p_{\textrm{c}}=1/e+O(L^{-2d/7}\log L)$ for both models for all d\ge 1$d\ge 1$. We examine the effects of pure additive noise on spatially extended systems with quadratic nonlinearities. We develop a general multi-scale theory for such systems and apply it to the Kuramoto–Sivashinsky equation as a case study. We first focus on a regime close to the instability onset (primary bifurcation), where the system can be described by a single dominant mode. We show analytically that the resulting noise in the equation describing the amplitude of the dominant mode largely depends on the nature of the stochastic forcing. For a highly degenerate noise, in the sense that it is acting on the first stable mode only, the amplitude equation is dominated by a pure multiplicative noise, which in turn induces the dominant mode to undergo several critical state transitions and complex phenomena, including intermittency and stabilisation, as the noise strength is increased. The intermittent behaviour is characterised by a power-law probability density and the corresponding critical exponent is calculated rigorously by making use of the first-passage properties of the amplitude equation. On the other hand, when the noise is acting on the whole subspace of stable modes, the multiplicative noise is corrected by an additive-like term, with the eventual loss of any stabilised state. We also show that the stochastic forcing has no effect on the dominant mode dynamics when it is acting on the second stable mode. Finally, in a regime which is relatively far from the instability onset so that there are two unstable modes, we observe numerically that when the noise is acting on the first stable mode, both dominant modes show noise-induced complex phenomena similar to the single-mode case.

Née avec les premiers vols habités, la recherche dans le domaine des sciences de la matière en micropesanteur est pratiquée aujourd'hui par une communauté nationale et internationale qui a appris à utiliser avec pertinence un outil qu'elle n'avait pas demandé et pour la mise en place duquel elle avait peu été consultée. L'étude à des fins scientifiques ou technologiques des phénomènes physiques en micropesanteur est devenue un élément de la recherche spatiale. Après avoir rappelé comment se manifeste l'ambiance de micropesanteur, nous montrons comment au cours des dernières années et pour se limiter à la communauté scientifique française, celle-ci a obtenu des résultats remarqués qu'il aurait été impossible d'obtenir au sol notamment dans le domaine de la solidification d'alliages métalliques et de la physique des fluides au voisinage du point critique. Nous présentons le bilan et les perspectives dans les cinq domaines principaux dans lesquels ont été classés les actions de recherche en micropesanteur pour lesquels nous présentons les éléments les plus significatifs: la solidification et la croissance cristalline, la combustion, les interfaces fluides, les objets lévités et les fluides critiques et supercritiques. Nous rappelons les liens importants qui existent entre ces travaux et la gestion des fluides en orbite. Nous présentons enfin un projet d'expérimentation dans la Station Spatiale Internationale qui est le plus représentatif de ceux qui sont à la fois pertinents et porteurs de résultats de premier plan, la formation des structures lors de la croissance d'alliages eutectiques modèles transparents.

This paper discusses the asymptotic behaviour, and in particular the critical singularities, of the generating functions for Pólya walks with a given fraction of visits to a hyperplane when the walk is or is not constrained to be on one side of that hyperplane. The three-dimensional case has applications in physics and chemistry.
