The semilocal convergence of a third-order Newton-like method for solving nonlinear equations is considered. Under a weak condition (the so-called γ-condition) on the derivative of the nonlinear operator, we establish a new semilocal convergence theorem for the Newton-like method and also provide an error estimate. Some numerical examples show the applicability and efficiency of our result, in comparison to other semilocal convergence theorems.
Multi-step modified Newton-HSS (MMN-HSS) methods, which are variants of inexact Newton methods, have been shown to be competitive for solving large sparse systems of nonlinear equations with positive definite Jacobian matrices. Previously, we established these MMN-HSS methods under Lipschitz conditions, and we now present a semilocal convergence theorem assuming the nonlinear operator satisfies milder Hölder continuity conditions. Some numerical examples demonstrate our theoretical analysis.
There has been a lot of study on the SOR-like methods for solving the augmented system of linear equations since the outstanding work of Golub, Wu and Yuan (BIT 41(2001)71-85) was presented fifteen years ago. Based on the SOR-like methods, we establish a class of accelerated SOR-like methods for large sparse augmented linear systems by making use of optimization technique, which will find the optimal relaxation parameter ω by optimization models. We demonstrate the convergence theory of the new methods under suitable restrictions. The numerical examples show these methods are effective.
Based on the relaxed factorization techniques studied recently and the idea of the simple-like preconditioner, a modified relaxed positive-semidefinite and skew-Hermitian splitting (MRPSS) preconditioner is proposed for generalized saddle point problems. Some properties, including the eigenvalue distribution, the eigenvector distribution and the minimal polynomial of the preconditioned matrix are studied. Numerical examples arising from the mixed finite element discretization of the Oseen equation are illustrated to show the efficiency of the new preconditioner.
In this paper, we present a preconditioned positive-definite and skew-Hermitian splitting (PPSS) iteration method for continuous Sylvester equations AX + XB = C with positive definite/semi-definite matrices. The analysis shows that the PPSS iteration method will converge under certain assumptions. An inexact variant of the PPSS iteration method (IPPSS) has been presented and the analysis of its convergence property in detail has been discussed. Numerical results show that this new method is more efficient and robust than the existing ones.
For symmetric eigenvalue problems, we constructed a three-term recurrence polynomial filter by means of Chebyshev polynomials. The new filtering technique does not need to solve linear systems and only needs matrix-vector products. It is a memory conserving filtering technique for its three-term recurrence relation. As an application, we use this filtering strategy to the Davidson method and propose the filtered-Davidson method. Through choosing suitable shifts, this method can gain cubic convergence rate locally. Theory and numerical experiments show the efficiency of the new filtering technique.
In this paper, we analyse the convergence rates of several different predictor-corrector iterations for computing the minimal positive solution of the nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equation arising in transport theory. We have shown theoretically that the new predictor-corrector iteration given in [Numer. Linear Algebra Appl., 21 (2014), pp. 761–780] will converge no faster than the simple predictor-corrector iteration and the nonlinear block Jacobi predictor-corrector iteration. Moreover the last two have the same asymptotic convergence rate with the nonlinear block Gauss-Seidel iteration given in [SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 30 (2008), pp. 804–818]. Preliminary numerical experiments have been reported for the validation of the developed comparison theory.
In this paper, we first construct a preconditioned two-parameter generalized Hermitian and skew-Hermitian splitting (PTGHSS) iteration method based on the two-parameter generalized Hermitian and skew-Hermitian splitting (TGHSS) iteration method for non-Hermitian positive definite linear systems. Then a class of PTGHSS-based iteration methods are proposed for solving weakly nonlinear systems based on separable property of the linear and nonlinear terms. The conditions for guaranteeing the local convergence are studied and the quasi-optimal iterative parameters are derived. Numerical experiments are implemented to show that the new methods are feasible and effective for large scale systems of weakly nonlinear systems.
A generalized preconditioned modified Hermitian and skew-Hermitian splitting (GPMHSS) real-valued iteration method is proposed for a class of complex symmetric indefinite linear systems. Convergence theory is established and the spectral properties of an associated preconditioned matrix are analyzed. We also give several variants of the GPMHSS preconditioner and consider the spectral properties of the preconditioned matrices. Numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.
A novel generalised successive overrelaxation (GSOR) method for solving generalised saddle point problems is proposed, based on splitting the coefficient matrix. The proposed method is shown to converge under suitable restrictions on the iteration parameters, and we present some illustrative numerical results.
In this paper we consider PDE-constrained optimization problems which incorporate an H1 regularization control term. We focus on a time-dependent PDE, and consider both distributed and boundary control. The problems we consider include bound constraints on the state, and we use a Moreau-Yosida penalty function to handle this. We propose Krylov solvers and Schur complement preconditioning strategies for the different problems and illustrate their performance with numerical examples.
The hyperbolic quadratic eigenvalue problem (HQEP) was shown to admit Courant–Fischer type min–max principles in 1955 by Duffin and Cauchy type interlacing inequalities in 2010 by Veselić. It can be regarded as the closest analog (among all kinds of quadratic eigenvalue problem) to the standard Hermitian eigenvalue problem (among all kinds of standard eigenvalue problem). In this paper, we conduct a systematic study on the HQEP both theoretically and numerically. On the theoretical front, we generalize Wielandt–Lidskii type min–max principles and, as a special case, Fan type trace min/max principles and establish Weyl type and Wielandt–Lidskii–Mirsky type perturbation results when an HQEP is perturbed to another HQEP. On the numerical front, we justify the natural generalization of the Rayleigh–Ritz procedure with existing principles and our new optimization principles, and, as consequences of these principles, we extend various current optimization approaches—steepest descent/ascent and nonlinear conjugate gradient type methods for the Hermitian eigenvalue problem—to calculate a few extreme eigenvalues (of both positive and negative type). A detailed convergence analysis is given for the steepest descent/ascent methods. The analysis reveals the intrinsic quantities that control convergence rates and consequently yields ways of constructing effective preconditioners. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the proposed theory and algorithms.
About thirty years ago, Achi Brandt wrote a seminal paper providing a convergence theory for algebraic multigrid methods [Appl. Math. Comput., 19 (1986), pp. 23–56]. Since then, this theory has been improved and extended in a number of ways, and these results have been used in many works to analyze algebraic multigrid methods and guide their developments. This paper makes a concise exposition of the state of the art. Results for symmetric and nonsymmetric matrices are presented in a unified way, highlighting the influence of the smoothing scheme on the convergence estimates. Attention is also paid to sharp eigenvalue bounds for the case where one uses a single smoothing step, allowing straightforward application to deflation-based preconditioners and two-level domain decomposition methods. Some new results are introduced whenever needed to complete the picture, and the material is self-contained thanks to a collection of new proofs, often shorter than the original ones.
In this paper, we propose a multigrid algorithm based on the full approximate scheme for solving the membrane constrained obstacle problems and the minimal surface obstacle problems in the formulations of HJB equations. A Newton-Gauss-Seidel (NGS) method is used as smoother. A Galerkin coarse grid operator is proposed for the membrane constrained obstacle problem. Comparing with standard FAS with the direct discretization coarse grid operator, the FAS with the proposed operator converges faster. A special prolongation operator is used to interpolate functions accurately from the coarse grid to the fine grid at the boundary between the active and inactive sets. We will demonstrate the fast convergence of the proposed multigrid method for solving two model obstacle problems and compare the results with other multigrid methods.
Algebraic Multigrid (AMG) methods were developed originally for numerically solving Partial Differential Equations (PDE), not necessarily on structured grids. In the last two decades solvers inspired by the AMG approach, were developed for non PDE problems, including data and image analysis problems, such as clustering, segmentation, quantization and others. These solvers share a common principle in that there is a crosstalk between fine and coarse representations of the problems, with flow of information in both directions, fine-to-coarse and coarse-to-fine. This paper surveys some of these problems and the AMG-inspired algorithms for their solution.
Numerical aspects of a pore scale model are investigated for the simulation of catalyst layers of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. Coupled heat, mass and charged species transport together with reaction kinetics are taken into account using parallelized finite volume simulations for a range of nanostructured, computationally reconstructed catalyst layer samples. The effectiveness of implementing deflation as a second stage preconditioner generally improves convergence and results in better convergence behavior than more sophisticated first stage pre-conditioners. This behavior is attributed to the fact that the two stage preconditioner updates the preconditioning matrix at every GMRES restart, reducing the stalling effects that are commonly observed in restarted GMRES when a single stage preconditioner is used. In addition, the effectiveness of the deflation preconditioner is independent of the number of processors, whereas the localized block ILU preconditioner deteriorates in quality as the number of processors is increased. The total number of GMRES search directions required for convergence varies considerably depending on the preconditioner, but also depends on the catalyst layer microstructure, with low porosity microstructures requiring a smaller number of iterations. The improved model and numerical solution strategy should allow simulations for larger computational domains and improve the reliability of the predicted transport parameters. The preconditioning strategies presented in the paper are scalable and should prove effective for massively parallel simulations of other problems involving nonlinear equations.
In this work the one-band effective Hamiltonian governing the electronic states of a quantum dot/ring in a homogenous magnetic field is used to derive a pair/quadruple of nonlinear eigenvalue problems corresponding to different spin orientations and in case of rotational symmetry additionally to quantum number -L•i. We show, that each of those pair/quadruple of nonlinear problems allows for the min-max characterization of its eigenvalues under certain conditions, which are satisfied for our examples and the common InAs/GaAs heterojunction. Exploiting the minmax property we devise efficient iterative projection methods simultaneously handling the pair/quadruple of nonlinear problems and thereby saving up to 40% of the computational time as compared to the nonlinear Arnoldi method applied to each of the problems separately.
