Eric Hilt has finished his term as co-editor. Carolyn Moehling of Rutgers University is the new editor for submissions on the Americas, Africa, and Oceania. Bishnupriya Gupta is now in her third year as co-editor for Eurasian submissions. John Parman finished his term as book review editor. Matthew Jaremski is the new book review editor for the Americas. Juan Flores Zendejas is the book review editor for the rest of the world. The Journal is fortunate have Lily Welch continue as the Journal’s Assistant Editor and Sally Sztrecska as its Production Editor.
The Journal has benefited greatly from the expert guidance and advice of our Editorial Board and 347 referees who contributed their time and expertise to maintaining and enhancing the Journal’s quality. The Editorial Board of the Journal consists of 18 members. The members typically serve three-year terms. Those departing from the Board this year are Matthew Jaremski, Allison Shertzer, and Jacob Weisdorf. We thank them for their contribution. We have three new board members who are replacing them: Gary Richardson, Zhiwu Chen, and Eric Monnet. The editorial office is grateful to all who have worked on behalf of the Journal over this past year. We also recognize and appreciate the contributions of many scholars to the Journal’s book reviews.
Over the past five years, Journal’s impact factor, which measures of the frequency with which its articles are cited, has been rising. In 2018, the five-year impact factor was 1.9. In 2020, it rose to 3.4, but it fell to 2.8 in 2022. In 2023, the number stands at 3.1. Table 1 displays the data. This is a reflection of the quality of the articles published in the Journal, and may also reflect growing scholarly interest in the field of economic history.
Table 1 JOURNAL IMPACT FACTOR

The impact factor is calculated as the number of citations to the Journal within a given year of papers published in the previous five years divided by the number of “citable items” from the previous five years.
The number of new submissions to the Journal in recent years is shown in Table 2. From 2013–14 to 2017–18, the average number of submissions per year was approximately 160, but there was a noticeable jump in the number of submissions to 195, 209, and 206 in 2018–19, 2019–20, and 2020–21. The number of submissions then fell in 2021–22 and 2022–23, but rebounded this past year to 201.There has been a rise in the number of submissions on Asia. The Journal published 30 articles in total in 2023–24, not counting the presidential address by Jane Humphries.
Table 2 SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION RATES

The “published” count includes refereed articles and notes. It does not include the presidential address, which is published in June, nor “reviews and reflections” articles.
The publication ratio displayed in Table 2 is the number of refereed papers and notes published in the current year divided by the number of new manuscripts submitted in the previous year. In 2023–24, the publication ratio is 0.15 (30/201), well within the range seen since 2015–16.
Table 3 reports the response-time statistics for the corresponding submissions. To place the numbers into context, our goal is to have a decision back to the author within 90 days. Response times for all submissions, as well as for new submissions, are lower this year in comparison to the last few years. In 2023–24, the median response time for all submissions (including revised manuscripts) was 53 days, and for new submissions, the median response time was 64 days. We make every effort to handle submissions efficiently, taking into consideration that we are primarily focused on the quality of editorial decisions, rather than their speed.
Table 3 RESPONSE TIME STATISTICS

The distributions of submissions are documented in subsequent tables. We show the data for eras in Table 4 and for topics in Table 5. The data on regions is shown in Table 6. These tables present data for 2018–2019 to 2023–2024.
Table 4 DISTRIBUTION OF SUBMISSIONS BY ERA, MULTIPLE SELECTIONS PER SUBMISSION POSSIBLE

Table 5 DISTRIBUTION OF SUBMISSIONS BY TOPIC, MULTIPLE SELECTIONS PER SUBMISSION POSSIBLE

Table 6 DISTRIBUTION OF GEOGRAPHICAL AREA

The Journal’s coverage remains broad. Table 4 shows that the distribution of submissions over eras has been fairly steady in recent years, with the nineteenth and twentieth centuries accounting for the bulk of submissions. Table 5 shows that submissions in political economy, labor, and demography have been particularly strong. Growth, finance, and agriculture have also been important topics. Table 6 shows that this year, manuscripts on Asia have been as numerous as those on Western Europe and the United States. Manuscripts from all of Europe, including Eastern and Western Europe and Great Britain, have the largest share in all submissions.
Book reviews are an important component of the Journal, and we sincerely thank the many reviewers. We also remind our membership to have their press send a copy of any new books to the relevant book review editor. In recent years, the Journal has also sought occasional “reviews and reflections” based articles, extended book reviews, and roundtable book reviews when appropriate. In 2023–24, the Journal did not publish a “reviews and reflections” article.
In 2023, Claudia Goldin, a former editor of the Journal, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics. The editorial team celebrated this momentous occasion for our community by publishing a virtual special issue consisting of the nine papers in the JEH she had authored or co-authored. We thank Kerry Boyles and the staff of Cambridge University Press for their support in making this happen. The virtual issue is available on the Journal website.
Readers will recall that at the 2013 meetings, the EHA board of trustees approved a policy to make publication conditional on archiving the data sufficient to replicate the results in accepted articles. The authors of all new submissions from 1 January 2016 onward that were accepted for publication have been required to post data and replication files to maintain and advance the Journal’s efforts to ensure transparency and scholarly integrity. A branded page can be found with openICPSR, and depositors can submit files into openICPSR per the instructions available at http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/files/openICPSR/JEH-deposit-instructions.pdf. The editorial office and ICPSR continue to work to enhance the interface.
