1 Names
This index contains the names of the medieval people and a select group of modern-day scholars mentioned in this book. Patron saints of churches have been excluded, as these can be found in Index 2. Most names have been provided with brief descriptions of their status, office, family relationship or other characteristics that define them in the source material, to make it easier to identify the right person. On rare occasions, descriptions have not been abbreviated because they occur only once. When different people share the same name, and the descriptors are not distinctive, the names have been provided with an additional number (i.e. Name1, descriptor) to be able to differentiate them. People that are somehow related or connected to priests have the name of the cleric in question behind their own, in parentheses. Page numbers in italics indicate that the indexed reference is found in the footnotes and not in the main body of the text.
