Cambridge University Press is inviting applications for the position of Editor of Scottish Journal of Theology

Scottish Journal of Theology is an international journal of systematic, historical and biblical theology. Since its foundation in 1948, it has become established as one of the world's leading theological journals, seeking to promote critical engagement across the full range of the Christian tradition. Scottish Journal of Theology provides an ecumenical forum for debate, and engages in extensive reviewing of theological and biblical literature.

From 2026, Scottish Journal of Theology will move to a Research Open model, meaning that research articles published in the journal will be Gold Open Access. This exciting transition to open access reflects Cambridge University Press's commitment to open research.

Professor Ian McFarland, who has edited the journal for the past 10 years, is stepping down at the end of 2025, and we are inviting applications from those interested in taking on the editorship of the journal for an initial term of five years. It is envisaged that the new Editor will 'shadow' Prof. McFarland from September until the end of 2025, although there is some flexibility to extend or truncate the handover period if necessary.

Current editorial duties include:

• Handling manuscripts from submission through to publication on our OPRS, ScholarOne
• Managing the peer review process, ensuring that the journal adheres to our publishing ethics and research integrity policies
• Appointing editorial board members, ensuring that the editorial board remains a valuable resource in terms of soliciting papers, reviewing papers in their particular area of expertise and guiding the editorial direction of the journal
• Managing book reviews, finding appropriate reviewers for books that are published in the field, to ensure that Scottish Journal of Theology remains a valuable resource for both researchers and readers.

We are open to applications from individuals based anywhere in the world. The successful candidate will have a clear and exciting vision for the journal's future development and the energy, as well as the commitment and standing to realise that vision.

Covering letters should outline how the applicant(s) would approach the editorship, including:

• thoughts on the future content and strategic direction of Scottish Journal of Theology, considering both its rich history and exciting open access future
• the day to day running of the journal editorial office
• financial and administrative support required from the Press*
• an indication of the support available (if any) from the applicant’s home institution, including administrative support and time allowed for journal work
• details of any prior journals experience

The total document should comprise no more than five pages.

*Financial support in the form of an annual editorial stipend and, if necessary, administrative support to manage the Scholar One peer review system are provided by Cambridge University Press.
