1 The Hallé Orchestra has been a subject of a good deal of research, including C.B. Rees, One Hundred Years of the Hallé (London: MacGibbin & Kee, 1957); Michael Kennedy’s The Hallé Tradition: A Century of Music (Manchester: Manchester University Press, 1960), and his The Hallé, 1858–1983: A History of the Orchestra (Manchester: Manchester University Press, 1982).
2 Hallé was such an important figure that Michael Kennedy edited his autobiography in the first generation of British Music Studies: The Autobiography of Charles Hallé, With Correspondence and Diaries (London: Elek, 1972). More recently, Robert Beale’s biography has added a great deal to the conversation (Beale, Charles Hallé: A Musical Life (Aldershot: Ashgate, 2007).
